SGG STADIP SILENCE®

SGG STADIP SILENCE ®, acoustic laminated glassThis is the ideal solution for enhanced insulation against both

airborne and impact noise. It provides exceptional levels of sound

insulation whilst maintaining the safety and security properties of

laminated glass.

SGG CLIMALIT® SILENCE and SGG CLIMAPLUS® SILENCEare double glazing products designed to effectively improve interior

comfort, by providing a high level of performance in acoustic

insulation, thermal insulation and security. SGG CLIMAPLUS SILENCE

provides enhanced thermal insulation through the combination

of the Silence interlayer with a low-emissivity glass such as

SGG PLANITHERM FUTUR N. The low-e coating has the effect of

reflecting radiated heat back into the room and saves on energy

wastage. By replacing the air in the unit’s cavity with an inert gas

such as argon, this heat insulating effect can be further improved.

A real danger to healthIn today’s world, more and more people are suffering from noise overload. Solving this problem is oneof the biggest challenges for thoseresponsible for our living and workingenvironments.• Noise generates stress: «From anoise level of 60 dB(A) and above, symptoms of stress can begin toappear: sleep loss, decline in psycho-motor and intellectual performance.»(Prof. Lehman, Max Planck Institute).• ... and cardiac problems. The BerlinInstitute for Water, Soil and AirHygiene reveals that individualsexposed to average noise levels above65 dB(A) during the day - one-sixth ofthe German population - have a 20%higher risk of heart attack.• Sustained exposure to noise anddisturbing sounds also means thatthe body produces a steady stream ofadrenaline, a state that can lead tohypertension, psychological problemsand sexual dysfunction (Time, July 98).

Noise and childrenA study conducted in Munich showsthat children attending a school nearthe airport had a reduced cognitiveability in the area of memory andlanguage comprehension(Psychological Science 1995, 1998).

A problem of pollutionParadoxically, although there is aworld-wide battle to combat certainspecific forms of pollution, the deterioration in the quality of life due to noise pollution is steadilyincreasing.• 65% of the European population isregularly exposed to noise intensitiesabove 55 dB(A) and 16% to more than 65 dB (European EnvironmentAgency).• Noise abatement measures for carsare offset by the growth in traffic andthe development of leisure activities(European Commission: Future noisepolicy, 4/11/1996).

We can act!It is difficult to act solely againstthe sources of noise, but it is possibleto strongly reduce the penetration of noise within our homes. Studies conducted in various countries provethat Europeans are ready to investto protect themselves against noise.

4 out of 10 French peopleare willing to invest ininsulation for their home:

Windows are the weak link in acousticinsulationThe critical frequency causesan unwanted acoustic peakThe law of mass states that the thicker the glass, the weaker thenoise transmitted. A second law states that transmitted noise decreases as we pass from low to higher frequencies. This is true up to a certain level, calledthe critical frequency. At this pointeverything is reversed. It is as if theglass suddenly develops a holethrough which noise can pass freely.

The acoustic weakness of glass around the critical frequency is particularlytroublesome because itis situated in the frequencyband encountered mostoften

Conventional products are no solutionWith single glazing, increasing theglass thickness doesn’t help. Theacoustic peak just moves to lower fre-quencies. Laminated glazing with anordinary PVB interlayer is also unableto significantly reduce this peak effect. With symmetric double glazing theeffect is even worse! With two panesof the same thickness the acousticpeaks are superimposed and serve tostrengthen each other. In addition amass-spring-mass resonance pointappears at low frequencies.

The best acoustic performanceSGG STADIP SILENCE is a laminated glassdeveloped by SAINT-GOBAIN GLASSwith a special acoustic PVB interlayer,PVB Silence®. PVB Silence acts like a dampening core between the twopanes of glass. It prevents vibration, eliminating the problem of the criticalfrequency and thus the acoustic peaksat high frequencies. SGG STADIP SILENCEis a patented and unique product thatoffers exceptional levels of acousticcomfort.

and assembled like SGG STADIP.• SGG STADIP SILENCE filters morethan 99% of UV between 320 and 380 nanometres and thus reduces the fading of colours in textiles andother items.

And an extra benefit!SGG STADIP SILENCE is a laminatedglass. Like SGG STADIP it therefore helps to enhance security in the eventof breakage, attempted break-ins orvandalism, in return for a very modestadditional cost. This ‘extra’ means thattraditional acoustic products simplycannot compete.

SGG STADIP SILENCE®:THE perfect solution to airborne noiseAll the advantages ofSGG STADIP ®, standard PVBlaminated glass• The industrial production of SGG STADIP SILENCE ensures reliable, consistent and controlled quality.• SGG STADIP SILENCE has passed alldurability tests.• SGG STADIP SILENCE can be combinedeasily in double glazing with all typesof glass, including coated glass (solarcontrol, thermal insulation etc).• SGG STADIP SILENCE provides optimum optical quality.• SGG STADIP SILENCE is easy to use:available in large sizes (max. 3.21m by 6 m), it can be handled, cut, shaped

Moderate the noise from rainwith the help of SGG STADIPSILENCE®

The use of glass in overhead applica-tions is becoming more and more common. This creates, however, spaceswhich are sensitive to impact noisefrom rain and hail. Trials carried out bya university laboratory(*) in which diffe-rent types of glazing were submitted toartificial rain have produced very posi-tive results for SGG STADIP SILENCE, bothin single and in double glazed form.

Double glazing containing a pane ofSGG STADIP SILENCE performs better by 6 dB than one with an ordinary PVBinterlayer. For optimum effectivenesstwo panes of SGG STADIP SILENCEshould be used with 0.76 mm interlayers to provide an additionalgain of 7 dB!It is worth noting that acoustic resinlaminated glasses are not suitable foroverhead applications due to safetyrequirements.(*) Study by Prof. Vermeir, Louvain University, Belgium

SGG STADIP SILENCE®: THE clear acousticsolution for interiors

I n t e r i o r s

The use of glass in partitions is becoming significantly more appa-rent. This is due to both the extensive decorative possibilities that glassbrings to interior design as well as flexibility and ease of use. Here too SGG STADIP SILENCE proves to be the optimum glazingsolution, combining all the benefits of glass with safety and superioracoustic performance.

A fully flexible solutionDouble-glazing is now standard inmost sectors of the construction market. With its SGG CLIMALIT and SGG CLIMAPLUS ranges, SAINT-GOBAINGLASS offers a group of products thatcan be tailored to combine bothacoustic and thermal insulation.Other functions such as enhancedsecurity and solar control can also be added, enabling you to meet the most demanding of performance specifications.

The ideal composition fornoise preventionThe best acoustic performance isachieved with asymmetric double glazing, incorporating at least one leaf of SGG STADIP SILENCE. The choiceof composition will depend on thesource of noise confronting you.The diagram below shows the sourcesof noise which we find most annoying,in descending order. The two graphs opposite show howeffective SGG STADIP SILENCE is in comparison to standard PVB for eachof the two main noise sources - roadtraffic and air traffic.

SGG CLIMAPLUS SILENCE 6 mm/16 argon/44.1 or 44.2 (8.4 or 8.8 mm) (Rw 42 dB (-2; -6))reduces the level of road noisecompared with a 4 mm/12argon/4 mm double glazed unit by:• 12 dB in Rw• 10 dB in Rw + C (fast traffic, speech, children)• 9 dB in Rw + Ctr(street traffic, night clubs, distantaircraft, many low-pitch sounds)• 14 dB in the area of the criticalfrequency

If higher levels of acoustic insulation against airborne noise are required we wouldrecommend using either a 55.2 (10.8 mm)/16 argon/44.2 (8.8 mm) SGG CLIMAPLUS SILENCE (Rw 46 dB (-2;-6)) or a 55.2(10.8 mm)/20 argon/44.2 (8.8 mm) SGG CLIMALIT SILENCE (Rw 47 dB (-2;-7)):• 16 to 17 dB better in Rw• 14 to 15 dB better in Rw + C• 13 dB better in Rw + Ctr• More than 30 dB better in thearea of the critical frequency, when compared with a standard4/12/4 double-glazed unit!

In order to achieve exceptionally high levels of acoustic insulation, withoutsignificantly increasing the weight and thickness of the unit,SAINT-GOBAIN GLASS has developed and tested different compositions of SGG CLIMAPLUS SILENCE.

INSTALLATIONSGG STADIP SILENCE must be installed in accordance with current national regulations and our special guidelines in particular concerning the following areas:• Overhead applications• Air and water tightness• Thermal stressFor details see section 3 in the Glass Guide 2000.

Placing a direct heat source in close proximity of the glassshould be avoided (spotlight, radiator etc) as they may create localised overheating.Similarly, avoid covering the inside face of external glazingwith excessive notices/labelling, lettering, etc. Please ensure thatSGG STADIP SILENCE is notexposed to temperatures exceeding 60°C, for prolonged periods.
