D a n t eWe began this busy summer season hosting a collaborative hot glass demonstration by Dante Marioni and Preston Singletary at Gilmor Glass in Millerton, NY. Dante and Preston have been longtime friends and over the past decades, they have worked together assisting each other as part of a team to make one or the others very distinctive art. They have collaborated with other artists; Preston with Tammy Garcia and Louis Gardiner and Dante most recently with Benjamin Moore in Seattle. Though their collaboration is in its early stages, we feel that it is an honor to witness the creative expansion and exploration of these two extremely talented artists. We are currently featuring both artists with their individual works. If you can’t make it to the gallery, you can view the catalogs on our website, or request a hard copy.

It is a privilege to be a part of the rich cultural resources offered here in the western corner of Massachusetts, known as the Berkshires. Tanglewood which is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Berkshire Theatre Festival, one of the oldest summer stock theatres in the country and The Norman Rockwell Museum are all located in our town of Stockbridge. With the major exhibition of Dale Chihuly’s work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston this summer, “Through the Looking Glass”, we are meeting many

new clients who have added our gallery as a cultural destination. As a result we are bringing more awareness to the contemporary glass art movement.

With 2012 approaching we look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first workshops led by Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino at the Toledo Museum of Art, marking the beginning of the American Studio Glass Movement. It is an honor to be exhibiting so many great artists who have helped to move glass forward as an art medium. We look forward to continuing our quest to bring the very best in contemporary glass to new and seasoned audiences as well as foster our relationships with new and established artists.

eric hilton studied at the edinburgh college of art and has taught at universities in scotland, england, the United states, and canada. he continues to produce designs for steuben, using copper wheel engraving. copper wheel engraving is linked to the great heritage of glass making. it seems to be a technique that is somewhat neglected in the modern glass movement. at a recent conference in edinburgh, hilton realized how popular it seemed to be over there.

“Art for me is a vehicle that synthesizes order into the awe of existence. It is the vehicle for dance, music, poetry, literature and the visual arts. It represents the soul of human consciousness.”

Eric’s true passion is in the creative process in the molding, etching, cutting, sandblasting and the polishing of each work. His process is similar to painting, as he gradually builds each piece over the whole surface. You can find the elements of life - earth, air, fire, and water in his work. “I am influenced by nature from which infinite information can be gleaned”

new artists in the Gallery

it was a big decision to expand our family of artists. We want to be able to care for the people we already represent. however, we do realize that it is important for visitors to experience a wide range of possibilities in glass when they visit the gallery.

Peter Bremers, from the netherlands works with cast, kiln formed glass. bremers work can be very large in scale, but for our gallery we chose seven smaller pieces from his melting ice series, which we felt would be a great way to introduce the work to our clients this summer.

this body of work is a record of his impressions of the glaciers and of the waves glistening in the dawn sunlight, during a journey to antarctica.

“The inspiration for these pieces is the process of ice changing shape in the water due to waves, wind and most of all melting through sun light. I have made the models from big lumps of wax. By heating them with torches and hot air blowers, I imitated the natural melting process of ice. I didn`t actually touch the glass apart from minimal corrections. They are the only ones I made this way and I love them for their abstraction qualities.”

in the netherlands, bremers’s work is featured in the public collections of boymans van beuningen museum in rotterdam, Gemeentemuseum in the hague, and national Glassmuseum in Leerdam.

making art happensecondary market. auctions. every few months these subjects come up here at the gallery and for the time being we have come to terms with how we will respond to them. While there are many other businesses that are set up to take care of de-acquisitioning work for collectors, we have made the decision restrain from exhibiting secondary market art.

as contemporary art gallerists*, we feel very strongly that it is in the interest of the creative process to put all our energy into exhibiting art for our artists who are currently trying to make a living. in the past, when we have been faced with the quandary of showing a secondary market piece or showing a new work by an artist, i have to say that i always show the work that the artist has entrusted us with. at this time we do have a few secondary market works in the gallery by previous arrangement with our clients and we will continue having information or photos of special pieces of secondary market works; however we have removed the secondary market page from our website in order to focus better on current works by artists.

i have to imagine the mixture of pride and excitement an artist must feel to witness his or her creation go up in value at an auction or on the resale market. that means he or she can consider an increase in the retail price of current works. certain venues can also hurt the value of anything by not being held in the right place, time and with the best audience in attendance.

for more than 35 years, Jim has been part of the art world as both an artist and gallerist. schantz Galleries will happily make new appraisals for works by artists we represent and have a firm knowledge of the present valuation. however, we will not hesitate to suggest that collectors wishing to sell their own collection get valuations from other seasoned experts like William Warmus. We are also happy to recommend galleries that deal with the secondary marketing of art. Schantz Galleries is not an auction house or a resale gallery… and you can imagine how happy that makes our artists! the reason i am sharing this insight with you now is so you can appreciate even more what goes into Making Art Happen.

*gallerist – sounds like an elitist word for art dealer, but it supposedly infers that we are directly involved with the care of artists and have good relationships with our clients, rather than with the quick turnover of art objects.

Artists in the newsa new work titled smoochers by Dan Dailey from his circus vase series was placed in the entrance hall of the newly built Dana-farber cancer institute’s Yawkey center in boston ma. the piece was made specifically for the new contemporary art collection which graces the patient care areas as a means to offer patients, family members, and staff moments of inspiration and reflection.

the art collection at the Dana-farber institute is comprised of both local artists and international figures such as Dale chihuly, alex Katz and andy Warhol. the art at Dana-farber benefits all who visit and the staff of this new center.

···the Knoxville museum of art has commissioned sculptor richard Jolley to create a permanent 100 x 40 foot installation in glass and metal for the walls of the museum’s Great hall which is used for community events and

educational programs. Jolley’s work is expected to cover most of the upper walls of this monumental space.

according to Kma executive Director David butler, “...the project imposes tremendous technical and aesthetic challenges, and will result in the one of the largest and most significant sculptural glass works anywhere.” the project is expected to take three to four years to complete. Design and fabrication is in progress and the projected date for installation is 2014.

···this summer, the ohio state U n i v e r s i t y will confer an honorary D e g r e e , Doctor of fine arts, to lino tagliapietra,

in recognition of his remarkable career as a world-renowned glass artist and teacher, as well as his extraordinary contributions to the field of contemporary art glass.

···Dorothy hafner has been commissioned to create a fused glass installation for the chapel of children’s mercy hospital, Kansas city, mo.

this fall, Dorothy will be offering a limited number of collectors the opportunity to experience the art of glass fusing first hand in her idyllic Westport, ct studio and home. the 2-day sessions, limited to 4 participants, will offer the opportunity to work with hafner as they learn to compose, cut and fuse glass. each participant will take away 2 works of their own

Watch the HOT SHOP LIVE! where visiting artists and the hot shop team work in real time, while the emcee describes the technical aspects of the work. You can even e-mail questions for the artists to be answered. over the past few months, these sG artists each spent a week working in the hot shop: ethan stern, lino tagliapietra, richard royal and martin Blank working with albert Paley. this July, steven weinberg was the featured artist at the inaugural exhibition of the opening of the Shanghai Museum of Glass in china.

he will return to shanghai in the fall to work on a casting studio and a cutting /grinding shop on the museum’s grounds for his use as well as a select group of visiting artists. it looks like steve will be spending a lot of time there, as he has been offered a teaching position at tsinghua University in beijing where he will be giving a 2 week intense workshop in september before heading back to shanghai.

this past may, sG presented our first painting exhibit. artists gregory gillespie and scott Prior were featured, and the turnout for the exhibit was great! We feel that the paintings and the glass work well together and are very c o m p l i m e n t a r y,

over in Prague, V l a d e n a Klumpar is working on a new project: a monograph which will summarize 30 years of working with glass, to be published by a czech publisher. additionally, she is working on the new series of work which she hopes to i n c o r p o r a t e neon or LeD light.

We’re excited to welcome Kristen Johnson as the gallery’s administrator. Kristen will be working at the gallery as assistant to the Director, and helping us with the many administrative duties we are faced with as well as working with artists and clients. she comes to us with a strong background in arts management having worked at Lacoste Gallery, the society for arts and

crafts, and the boston international fine art show.
