Pentecost by the Book When the time for my confirmation was about to be ful-filled, my junior high classmates and I were all in our par-ish hall together, awaiting not the Holy Spirit so much as the bishop. There were no Parthians, Medes, or Elamites in our ranks—though like that ragtag bunch who gathered in Jerusalem fifty days after the resurrection, we were probably a little confused. So we had that Pentecost char-acteristic going for us. The bishop would come bearing questions, we were told, and would call on us at random. Any of the questions at the back of our confirmation book could be on the oral exam. Any one of us could be called on to answer. So study up. I did. And I didn’t get called on. Alas, all that knowledge, all those answers to questions I was not asked: “Can you give me the full name of the bishop who consecrated the sacred oils with which you will be anointed (confirmed)?” Funny question in that I probably didn’t realize the short answer was, “Ummm . . . You?” I’d have gone by the book: “His Ex-cellency, the Most Reverend George H. Speltz.” Kidding aside, I was relieved to get through that session and not be held back for remedial studies. I was ready. Bring on the driving winds and tongues as of fire. Or something a little less dramatic, as it turned out. “Mary, receive the seal of the Holy Spirit, the Gift of the Father,” Bishop Speltz said as he anointed me with sacred chrism (that he had consecrated!). I was totally expecting to feel some-thing at that moment. But there was nothing. Nothing oth-er than the question I asked myself as I made my way back to my pew: “What’s the Holy Spirit?” All the angels and saints must have roared with laughter. Or wept. Or thought it was a most profound Pentecost question. I went searching for the answer later that night. In my confirma-tion book, where else? But those answers failed to satisfy, and I forgot about the question. But God didn’t. God al-ways remembers our questions, and sees to the unfolding answers . . . “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who came to the apostles at Pentecost.” That’s straight from the book, and I do believe it. I also believe this same Holy Spirit, the bond of love between the Father and the Son, comes to all the baptized. I believe the Holy Spirit is big and not small. That the Holy Spirit is Wisdom, is “mobile beyond motion . . . passing into holy souls from age to age” and making them “friends of God and proph-ets” (Wis 7:24, 27). And we can most easily recognize these friends and prophets by the fruits of the Holy Spirit they bear: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosi-ty, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5:22-23). Pentecostés por el libro Cuando el momento de mi confir-mación estaba a punto de cumplirse, mis compañeros de se-cundaria y yo estábamos todos juntos en nuestro salón pa-rroquial, esperando tanto al Espíritu Santo como al obispo. No había partos, medos o elamitas en nues-tras filas-a pesar de que ese grupo de ragtag que se reunieron en Jerusalén cincuenta días después de la resurrección, pro-bablemente estábamos un poco confundidos. Así que teníamos esa característica de Pentecostés a nuestro favor. El obispo vendría con preguntas, nos dijeron, y nos llama-ría al azar. Cualquiera de las preguntas al final de nuestro libro de confirmación podría estar en el examen oral. Cualquiera de nosotros podría ser llamado a res-ponder. Así que estudia. Yo si. Y no me llamaron. Desgra-ciadamente, todo ese conocimiento, todas las respuestas a las preguntas no se me hicieron: Canime darme el nombre completo del obispo que consagró los aceites sagrados con los que será ungido (confirmado)? Es una pregunta graciosa que probablemente No se dio cuenta de que la respuesta cor-ta era Ummm. . . ¿Usted?: ha seguido el libro: Excelencia, el Reverendísimo George H. Speltz. Dejando de lado a mi lado, me sentí aliviado de haber terminado esa sesión y no ser retenido para los estudios de recuperación. Estaba listo. Llevar los vientos y las lenguas de conducción como de fue-go. O algo un poco menos dramático, como resultó. Dios mío, reciba el sello del Espíritu Santo, el don del Padre, dijo el obispo Speltz, mientras me ungía con un crisma sagrado (¡que había consagrado!). Estaba esperando totalmente sen-tir algo en ese momento. Pero no había nada. Nada más que la pregunta que me hice mientras volvía a mi banco: ¿Qué es el Espíritu Santo? Todos los ángeles y santos deben haber rugido de risa. O lloró. O pensó que era la pregunta más profunda de Pentecostés. Fui buscando la respuesta más tarde esa noche. En mi libro de confirmación, ¿dónde más? Pero esas respuestas no pudieron satisfacer, y me olvidé de la pregunta. Pero Dios no lo hizo. Dios siempre recuerda nuestras preguntas, y ve las respuestas en desarrollo. . . creo en el Espíritu Santo, el Señor, el dador de la vida, que vino a los apóstoles en Pentecostés. Eso es directamente del libro, y lo creo. También creo que este mismo Espíritu Santo, el vínculo de amor entre el Padre y el Hijo, llega a todos los bautizados.
