Reflec on by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Here on this eve of World Youth Day in Poland, and exactly five months from Christmas Eve, I was thinking of Ralphie, the fic onal hero of the popular film “A Christmas Story.” One of his traits exemplifies the no on today’s Gospel upholds for us. Back to Ralph for a moment. If you don’t recognize him, just ask any fan of the movie. He personifies the late storyteller Jean Shepherd, who is also the off-screen narrator. Ralph lives in the Midwest of the 1940’s who loves Christmas and who definitely wants a Red Ryder bb gun rifle under the tree. Working on his parents with persistent effort to get his wish is how I make him an example of today’s Scripture lesson. We need to be persistent in our prayer to have it be effec ve.

We have to admire the persistence of Abraham, who is the Holy Spirit’s chosen example for us in the story from Genesis. Here we see the patriarch engage in a near exhaus ng bargaining session with Yahweh, pushing the Lord to the limit. How many peo-ple will the Lord accept as an apology for Sodom’s misbehavior? Abraham is fully conscious that he is walking on the edge of dis-respect: “See how I presume to speak to my Lord though I am but dust and ashes?” he admits. No overtones of en tlement in his voice. None should be in ours when we pray. But note how Abraham’s persistence wins the day. Abraham, in turn, greatly appreciates Yahweh’s tolerance and jus ce.

In the Gospel Luke first presents us with Jesus’ teaching on the “Our Father.” Certainly there is at least a semester’s worth of con-tent to be “unpacked” in this perfect prayer. Praise of God comes first, then our pe ons.

Then the gospel moves on to Jesus’ lengthy treatment of the need for persistence in prayer. God is not one to be rushed. Nor or-dered to fit our schedule. Our modern American tendency to impa ence is bad enough when we casually disregard the speed limit in our driving, so we dare not do so in our praying. How o en I have heard people complain about God’s metable in re-sponding to their prayer, as if their urgency is to be His also.

Our belief holds that God knows best. Some mes His answer is “No.” But that reply never springs from malice on His part. He is the Supreme One, a er all, who alone knows the grand plan for the world. His love includes our ny part in that plan, set there by His choice to love us. So we are the ones who have to make the a tudinal adjustment because we are so ignorant at mes as to think we are the only persons who ma er.

Many worthwhile things take me. A er all, even Santa at first didn’t like Ralph’s choice of a rifle, when he worried that Ralph “might shoot his eyes out.” But there the rifle was under the tree that Christmas morning, along with the pink pajamas and the rabbit feet slippers.

Once upon a me a woman le her diamond brooch in a hotel. When she got home she remembered her brooch and called the hotel. She told the manager what happened and he went to look for it. He found it, put it in the safe, and returned to the phone to tell her the good news, but she had hung up. So many are like this. We aren’t willing to wait on the Lord.

First Reading: Genesis 18:20-32 Abraham boldly bargains with God down to just ten righteous people found in place to avert the destruc on of Sodom. His persis-tence in prayer brings God’s jus ce to the fore.

Second Reading: Colossians 2:12-14 Against the exis ng errors among the people, Paul stresses the tradi on of Christ, and not those that have led them astray. His stress is on a Chris an’s par cipa on in Christ’s passion, death and resurrec on through bap sm.

Gospel: Luke 11:1-13 We receive a catechesis on prayer in this Luke’s gospel that includes both the Lord’s Prayer and a strong instruc on from Our Lord on the necessity for persistence in our prayer.
