We at SETU bow humbly to the Lotus Feet of Parama Pujya Guruji, Gokarna Mandaladheeshwara, Srimad

Jagadguru Shankaracharya Shree Shree Raghaveshwara Bharati Mahaswamiji and seek blessings from Guruji.

Just a few days back, we celebrated Mahashivratri dedicated to Lord Shiva who is called the destroyer. His duty is to destroy all the worlds at the end of creation and dissolve them into Ekanda, nothingness! Please note; Lord Shiva's destruction is not negative but nourishing and constructive. His destruction builds and transforms life and energy for the welfare of the world. He destroys in order to renew and regenerate. Through destruction he facilitates the smooth transitions of things and events from one stage to another. He destroys our imperfections in order to ensure our spiritual progress. He destroys our illusions, desires and ignorance, our evil and negative nature and many things that stand between us and God.

Thus, Shivaratri is not a night to be slept through but one to remain awake in, to meditate, to seek spiritual progress. This is the right way of observing Shivaratri. Let us destroy the negativities in ourselves, make way for goodness and positivity in our lives and make a difference to all those around us. God does not want us to do extraordinary things. He wants us to do ordinary things extraordinary well. Small deeds done with good intention can make a big difference! Here is an interesting story:

An old man walking along a beach at dawn noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Catching up with the youth he asked what he was doing.

"The starfish will die if they are still on the beach when the sun roasts them with its mid-morning heat," came the answer.

“But the beach goes on for miles, and there are millions of starfish," countered the old man. "How can your effort make any difference?”

The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and threw it safely in the waves.

"It makes a difference to this one," he said.

One such difference was brought about by some tourists in Gokarna during Mahashivratri. Let us read about their achievement in this issue of SETU. We shall also catch glimpses of Guruji's visit to Rishikesh and the Mahashivratri at Gokarna. Let us also follow up the Vishwa Mangal Gou Gram Yatra, know about the Upanishad Ganga and explore ways to light up our lives and homes; all during our journey of our SOUL SEARCH with our very own Parama Poojya Guruji! Read on! Harerama. – Rajalakshmi Kameshwar Joshi

VISHWA MANGAL GOUGRAM YATRA: SOME FOLLOW-UP

An experiment in cow as the pivot of rural economy

India had a total of 134 breed of cows available 70 years ago. Now we are left with 38 to 42 varieties. On the

other hand, countries like Australia, Brazil, some parts of Africa are making best use of Indian Breed Cows by

increasing the numbers of various breeds in their countries. Sri Guruji has taken up the mammoth task of

saving Indian Breed Cows which are at the verge of extinction. First, Vishwa Gou Sammelan was organized

with a view to bring consciousness in the public about this fact. Sri Guruji's slogan was “To save cows, make

cow as an Industry”. This can be done only if we can make best use of Cow Urine and Dung for various items

like medicine, cosmetics and rituals.

About two years have passed since the Vishwa Mangal Gou Gram Yatra concluded in New Delhi with

presenting a memorandum containing over 8.40 crore signatures to the President Smt Pratibha Patil on

January 31, 2010. After the Yatra, the people associated with it took many concrete initiatives to establish

economic usefulness of the cow and also for village development. According to Shri Shankarlal, former

secretary of the Yatra Samiti, thousands of farmers adopted organic farming and the manufacturing as well as

marketing of panchgavya products began in professional manner across the country. Over 400 new goushalas

were set up and the existed goushalas were strengthened. Over 5,000 workers were imparted training to start

cow-based industries in villages.

Apart from starting new goushalas special projects for improving the breeds of Sahiwal, Nagri, Rathi,

Tharparkar and Gir cows have begun at many places. Efforts are made at these centres to prevent cross-

breeding of these cows to preserve and promote their original breed, added Shri Shankarlal, the Akhil

Bharatiya Gou Sewa Pramukh of RSS. Dr HR Nagendra, working president of the Yatra Samiti, said: “We

brought out two complete souvenirs in Hindi and English. We also documented about 800 videos that we

received from across the country. A 14 episode serial on the Yatra was telecast by the Shankara Channel.

With the blessings of Sri RamchandrapuraMath, Karnataka, 'Maa Gou Products Pvt. Ltd. (MGPPL)' was

formed to produce and market the panchgavya products in professional manner. The factory has been

established under the directorship of Sri R.S.Agarwal, Sri R.S.Goenka, Sri Anand Rathi, Sri M.K.Janardan and

Sri M.P.Sonika. The total income from the sales of products will be utilized to improve the available breeds of

Indian Cows. An investment of Rs two crore was made and the company is running successfully. Sri

Ramachandrapura Math also donated over 1000 indigenous breed cows to various farmers.

Shri Rammohan, who was the Delhi office secretary of the Yatra Samiti, informed that a Cow Breed Protection

Authority was formed at Kasargod district in Kerala by the state's left front government for the promotion of

cows. Not only this, the state government has declared Kerala an Organic State. A three-day camp was

organised at Alleppey district in December last year for the promotion of cows and organic farming. The Animal

Husbandry Department of Kerala also organised an exhibition at Thalikalam block of Trichur. It is the result of

these activities that the demand of indigenous cow breed increased and the price of some cows crossed over

Rs 35,000 each cow.

RSS Akhil Bharatiya Gram Vikas Pramukh Dr Dinesh pointed out that the work to start a goushala at Somanth

temple of Gujarat has begun. Similarly, a Cow Sanctuary is being set up in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh on

a piece of 9000 acre land. Shri Bhanwarlal Kothari, who was treasurer of the Yatra Samiti, informed that around

12000 acre gochar land is being revived in Bikaner, Rajasthan. A helpline has also been started in Pune for the

cow protection. Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad started the marketing of panchgavya products under

the banner of Gou Brand. It buys products directly from the goushalas and sells them in the market

professionally. - Reported by Sri Pramod Kumar, Organiser

INDIAN COW, BUFFALO BREEDS GIVE HEALTHIER MILK: RESEARCH

Indian cow and buffalo breeds possess a rich A2 allele gene that provides a better and healthier quality of milk than foreign breeds, according to a new study.

“The A2 allele gene in Indian milk breeds of cows and buffalos are 100 per cent, while in foreign breeds, it is around 60 per cent,” scientists of the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) have said in a report. Furthermore the frequency of this allele in Indian milk breeds is 1.0 (100 per cent), while in exotic breeds, it has been reported to be nearly 0.6 (60 per cent) or less, they added. Set up in 1984, NBAGR is an arm of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and is based in Karnal, Haryana.

The finding was arrived at after screening the status of the A2 allele of the beta casein gene in indigenous cows like Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Rathi and Gir etc, NBAGR Director B K Joshi said. “The counter allele to A2 is A1, which is considered to be associated with diabetic, obesity, cardiovascular diseases etc,” added Joshi. “Although the foreign breeds of cows produce more milk than Indian varieties, but due to more concentration of A1 gene in those breeds, the milk is of low quality,” the report said, adding that the long-term use of such milk may cause several health disorders.

The scientists scanned 22 breeds of Indian cows and found that in five milk yielding Indian cows — Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, Rathi and Gir — the status of the A2 allele was 100 per cent, while in other Indian breeds used for farming, its status was around 94 per cent, Joshi added. The scientists also scanned the status of this allele in the two most popular foreign breeds in India, Holstein Friesian and Jersey, in which the status of the A2 allele was 60 per cent only. GREATNESS OF JAGADGURU SHANKARACHARYA

Kumarila Bhatta was a staunch upholder of the ritualistic interpretation of the Vedas. He had established the superiority of the Vedas by jumping down from a mountain claiming that the Vedas would protect him. Thanks to him, the Vedic cult of sacrificial offerings to the Devas was re-established. Shankaracharya wanted an interpretative treatise (Vartikam) on his commentary written by Kumarila Bhatta and for this, he went to Prayaga, the confluence of the Yamuna and the mighty Ganga. Here, He praised the Triveni Sangam, had his ablutions in the holy waters, prayed for his mother and sat down to rest awhile. News that Kumarila Bhatta, the master of the Vedas and a scholar in all branches of learning, was going to enter a fire made of paddy husk to expiate for his sin of betraying his teacher.

Shankaracharya rushed to that place only to see Kumarila already burning in the slow fire. Kumarila was a follower of Purvamimamsa doctrine of Jaimini, a dualist, but still Shankaracharya wanted to show him His commenatary. He knew that acceptance of His commentaries by Kumarila would only prove its worth. Kumarila recognized Shankara and directed his disciples to give Him a cordial reception. Pleased with the hospitality, Shankara showed his commentary to Kumarila. Kumarila was higly pleased with the work but regretted the fact that because of his vow, he would not be able to produce a Vartikam. He further explained the cause for such a vow of self-expiation. Throughout his life, Kumarila only believed in the Vedic philosophy of ritualism and rejected the idea of God. Now he realized the existence of Ishwara as the entity who redeemed the world's sorrows and was love itself. Secondly, when he had set about his life's goal of establishing the superiority of the Vedas, he had to confront the Buddhists. But since he had no knowledge of their philosophy and their system of dialectics, he was not able to refute all their arguments. He joined a Buddhist monastery as a student, incognito, and learned their philosophy. Once when the monks there were criticizing the Vedas, he started shedding tears. The monks realized that he must be a Brahmana who had come to learn about them and then defeat them through public debates and challenges. They threw him off a cliff but he escaped when he declared that the truth of Vedas being revealed knowledge would protect him. But he had committed the sinful act of learning Buddhism by deception and used this knowledge to defeat their tribe. He had disrespected and deceived the teacher who deserved otherwise. Because of this he deserved a slow painful death.

The Acharya, after listening to all this, told Kumarila that He recognized him as Guha who was reincarnated to eradicate the Buddhists. He further offered to douse the flames with water from His Kamandalu and requested him to write the explanatory thesis on His commentary. Kumarila, who was a firm adherent of right conduct, refused to this suggestion as it would set a bad example to people. But he requested Shankaracharya to initiate him into Brahma-vidya. He also suggested that the Acharya should defeat Mandana Mishra, a famous scholar, in a debate, as he was a famous champion of rituals and a staunch opponent of the path of renunciation. After defeating him, Shankara could make him His disciple and then entrust him with the task of writing annotations on His work.

Shankaracharya imparted the knowledge of Brahman to this scholar and graced him with His blessings to make Kumarila realize his oneness with the All-pervading Being. Then He proceeded to Mandana Mishra's place, traversing the sky.

LIVING WITH GOD : Dharma – The Life Companion

This story occurs in the final chapter of the Mahabharatha. After Shree Krishna gave up His mortal coil, the Pandavas did not desire to live any longer and undertook Mahaprasthana or the final journey. They tread the strenuous path of yoga and dhyana and sought mukthi.

The Pandavas began to walk towards the Himalayas. Dharmaraja was followed by Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, and Draupadi. A dog also followed them. As they were walking, first Draupadi fell down due to exhaustion. Bheema was disturbed. He asked Dharmaraja why Draupadi fell down and could not reach the heaven. Dharmaraja answered: “It was Draupadi's duty to love all her husbands equally; but she loved Arjuna more than others; so she failed to reach her goal.”

Later on, one by one, Sahadeva, Nakula and Arjuna fell down. Dharmaraja explained the reasons for their fall: “Sahadeva was proud of his scholarship; Nakula was proud of his handsome looks; Arjuna, the achiever, was arrogant; so they all failed to reach the heaven.”

As he was speaking, Bheema too fell down. Dharmaraja explained Bheema's failure to reach the goal: “Bheema, you ate too much. It is a sin to eat more than necessary and deprive another living being of its food. You were also proud of your strength.”

Leaving behind his fallen brothers and wife,

Jagadguru Shankaracharya MahasamsthanamShri Samsthana Gokarna Shriramachandrapuramath

Dharmaraja continued his journey towards the heaven. Now, only the dog followed him. Indra, the king of Gods was waiting with the Pushpaka Vimana to take Dharmaraja to heaven. Dharmaraja asked Indra: “Can I bring this dog along with me? He has followed me faithfully till the end of this difficult journey.”

Indra replied, “Sorry, there is no place for dogs in the land of Gods.” Dharmaraja responded: “If I have to leave this dog behind, I wish to stay on earth itself. I do not want to gain mukthi by betraying this animal, which has accompanied me till the end.”

Both Indra and Yama, who was in the guise of the dog, were pleased with Dharmaraja's sense of righteousness and blessed him.

Bheema was world renowned for his strength, Arjuna was known for his valour, Draupadi and Nakula were endowed with exquisite beauty, Sahadeva was a scholar of repute. Dharmaraja did not possess any of these qualities. Only dharma was his constant companion.

While knowledge, valour and beauty made his brothers and wife remain on this earth, dharma secured a place in heaven for Dharmaraja. Shall we too make dharma our life companion?

SHIVRATRI IN GOKARNA

BEAUTIFUL THOUGHTS ..... contributed By Shri Suresh Oberoi

How good it is that God above has never gone on strike,Because he was not treated fair in things he didn't like,If only once he had given up and said, "That's it, I'm through!""I've had enough of those on earth, so This is what I'll do.”

“I'll give my orders to the sun--cut off the heat supply!""And to the moon give no more light, and run the oceans dry.""Then just to make things really tough, and put the pressure on,""Turn off the vital oxygen 'til every breath is gone!”

You know he would be justified, if fairness was the game,For no one has been more abused, met with more disdain than God,And yet he carries on, supplying you and me.With all the favors of His grace, and everything for free.

Men say they want a better deal, and so on strike they go.But what a deal we've given God to whom all things we owe.We don't care whom we hurt, to gain the things we like,But what a mess we'd all be in, if God should go on strike.
