Akron, OhiCo
July 23, 1940.
7>)
Probate Judge of Warren
County,
s /
Lebanon, ^
Oh io
Dear S i r ;
For
our family history we
are seeking information
of Settlemires.
Sometime about the
latter 1890*
s
there
was an estate probated
in
tha^t
two sisters recall
receiving
their
shares of
an
estate from Warren County
and
they
think
i t
was
probably
final
settlement
of
the estate
of their
great-grandfather
Settlemire.
These ladies
are
Ida Carter
Blundon,
of
Lima,
Ohio who
has lived most of her 75 years within 2a miles of Lima;
and Margaret
Florence Carter Patton, then
of Paulding County, Ohio and
now of Marion, Ohio.
They
were
daughters
of Margaret Thon^json Carter,
a daughter of Nancy
Settlemire
Thoii5)son whose\
father
lived
in Warren
... j. till i« m
County. This
Mr.
Settlemire
(whose
name might have been William) bought
land from the government when i t was first offered for sale around I835
in
what is
now
Allen
and
Putnam
Counties
but con tinued to live on the
old Settlemire farm 4 miles west of lebanon
As
his
children
grew
and
lef t
home
he gave
or sold
them
this
n^w
land,
160
acres
to
each
of
three
sons and 80 acres to each of two
daughters,
who moved onto the
land.
Whether any other children
may
have remained
with
him
we do not
know, but
possibly
i t
was
the estate
of one of
these that they participated
as the
original Mr.
Settlemire probably died
long before
I895,
in
fact
we think
he
might
have
been
a soldier
in
the
War
of 1812. The name has been spelled
-meyer,meir .
Subt le-
and'may even
have
begun
with
a
Z.
But
we
would
like to see how close we
are
to the
pioneers of Warren Count
Could you have someone
inter ted in this sort
of
thing
get
in
touch
with me
and
give
me an
idea
as
to how
much
expense i t
would
involve to
trace this
through your
court
records^ Thank you.
Yours
very
t r u ly

of
our aunt , v/hioh might be a

but v/hich may be improved by
compa r i s on wi th the a c t u a l r e co rd s .
The paragraph about the bequest to
the
children of iny. daughter
Nancy Jane Thompson, Dec'd agrees with our Aunt Ida^s narrative
except;-
1 .
She only re co le cte d th e Nancy, instead of Nancy
Jane;
2. She
thought
these

When V^illiam Settlemeyer

Nancy JcUie was
dead
and before
the

Margaret
Thompson
(Mrs.^Milton Carter) was dead. She
had

(now Mrs* L. J. Blundon of Lima, Ohio) and Margaret Florence Carter (nov/
Mrs. S . P.

of Marion. Ohio),
who
is Mrs. Davis*
mother.
Marga
ret^Plorence Carter
was
born Oct. 5,
1868 and when
she
was
three
months old
her
mother
died.
Her
father left her for sDtime with
a family
of Settlemeyer* living near Lima,
v/ho
ei ther could
not

not

properly
so a neighbor, not re la ted, asked for
her and
rea-i?ed her but soon moved
to

in
1885
she married

Patton.
So she had

Their recollection of

with your account. Mother got hers after she was married;

Nancy Jane was
said
to have been about 30 when she
died;
her hus
band,
Samuel
Thompson l ived
to be
about
50• He
remarried and
his
widow
remarried
and
served
as
guardian for the
two orphaned
6arter girls who
knew her as
Q-randma
S ims .
The
greatest
point of difference
centers
a round the
Settlemeyers
that
lived
in
Allen end Putnam counties. She knew
Mason
Settlemeyer who
lived a mile or so north of Columbus G-rove. e
had
married a Thompson a
s is ter
of
ScUnuel
Thompson.
This
Mason, she
claims,
was a
brother of
Nancy
Jane, and that Mason s daughters, Nettie and Sarah Settlemeyer
were
double-cousins
of
Margaret
Thompson.
Mason
had two brothers,(Teorge and Pra nk
Settlemeyer
who
lived
near Lima
i t was
at
the home
of one of them
that
Mother Pat ton
was
oared fo r temporari ly
as
an infant) . She claims these three to be
brothers of Nancy Jane and
so
sons of William Settlemeyer, but no such
names appear inthe wil l unless th^M
in two
places as middle i n i t i a l
represent them.
Possible
these men were grandsons
of
William s.?
However, the Allen County history records that a William Suttlemiire
in
1333 boiaght government land in Sections 23 and 26 in what is now the
western edge of Lima and
pret ty
well coincides with the location
of
the
homes of Ceorge and Milton Settlemeyer. I am in
error
above as i t was
Mas on
^O e orge and
Milton
who
were brothers while Frank was Q-eorge s son.
We
are glad
to
get
the
name
of Ann
Wilkerson as
i t gives
us
another
clue. Also
the
name of Zentmlp,^ opens up possibi l i t ies . CouM i t have
been the
original
fsunily liAme and William, unable to write permitted i t
to be changed to Settlemeyer?
At any event he
surely
at some time held
quite
a bit of
land,
and
i t was badly
sca t tered
a t t ha t .
I shall try to get in
touch
with Mr. John
Settlemeyer
as you
suggest
after
I have
returned
from my
vacation as
I may
learn
more
about
these
matters
while I am
away.
Thanking you for the in formation you sent and trusting tO hear

Mr. Lee L.

My Dear Mir. Dodds:-
Your letter
of Aug. 20
came
during my absence and
i t was
quite
pleasing
on
returning
home to
have
i t
here
since i t
contained
so
much
that was
interesting.
I wish
to
thank
you
for this
good
report
and to
say
that
a l l
the
conclusions you drew seem very Just if iable.
I
shall
be glad when I
have
more con^lete information
to
accept
your invitation to fi le with you a record of the Seettlemeyer lineage
but will f i rs t try to f i l l
in
some of
the gaps.
I am, however, send-
, ing a tracing of
the
vicinity of Qregonia as i t appears on government
topographical
maps and would
appreciate
i t i f
you
could
indicate the
location of
the
Settlemeyer homestead as you suggested. I
could
then
advise our
aunt
in Uma
jus t
how to get there and i f she is ever able
again to make the
trip
to vis i t
her
daughter in
Kentucky
near
Ov/ensboro
they
might go
that
way
instead
of
the
shorter
one
through Indiana.
She
has expressed such
a
wish;
but now is in such poor health that we did
not venture to vis i t
her
last
week. I t is the
joy that
some of these
older
folks
get out of
having the
early family rememberances recordithat
repays
me for
my
time and ef for t in making the record; and beside, I
l i k e
to d o t
run
into
some odd
or
unusual
things; or
maybe
i t is just ouV*
way of bunching fac t s
t oge the r .
F or in sta nce s there was born in or
near
Henry County early this
year
a
l i t t le gi r l
name^ Thompson
I
have
not yet learned her given name . 3he
is
the daugh te r and first-born
child
of Lorene
RamBb^m
Thompson,
who was
the
daughter
and f i rst
born child of
Morma
(Blundon) Ramsbotton, ,
now
of Owensboro, Ky. She
was
the daughte r
and
first-born
child
of
Ida
Garter
Blundon,
of
Lima,
Ohio,
the
aunt of whom I wrote above;
these four generat ions are now
l V
ing .
Ida Carter Blundon was the daughter and f i rs t born child of
Hargaret Thompson Carter
who
died
1363
in
Putnam
County. Hargaret
was
the
eldest
daughter (and possibly the first-born child of Nancy
Jane (Settlemeyer)
Thompson who was
the daughter (ani possibly the
first-born child) of Ann Wilkerson Settlemeyer.
Of
the two possibil
i t ies we would say that since Margaret Thon^on Ga^er was said to have
been
28 when
she died she
would
have to have been born
in
1840;
and
since Ann
V/ilkerson v/as born
in
1807 she would have been a grandmother
at
33.
So
i t is
quite
possible that both
Nancy
Jane
a,nd Margaret
were
first-borns.
At any
event
this
l i t t l e
Thon )son
gi r l
is
the
fourth generation of first-born daughters, and po^bly the sixth.
I
am curious as to whether there is siny
connection of
Samuel
Thompson
in Warren County; he probably married
Nancy
Jane
Settlemeyer
there, around
I839
. Our
aunt seems to reca l l
Slater
and
Matthe ws as
re la t ives
in Warren
County.
Last week I attended a reunion of the
Patton
family
at
Marion,
Ohio and showed a
chart
I had
prepared.a,list
over a
t housard blood -
descendants of their ancestor, Robert Patton of Hocking County, who
came into Ohio in 181? and
later
started a tov/n
a t Pat tonv il le
(now
Haydenville) ;
he was
a great-great-gi^ndfat^er
of my
children.
