Meditation: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit

We celebrate Today the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Today we receive an invitation to reflect upon the mystery of a Triune God who reveals Himself to humanity in three persons, but is only one God. The Catholic Church teaches that “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the "hierarchy of the truths of faith". The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men "and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin” (CCC, 234).

Our Christian faith is Trinitarian and this is based on the Bible and Church teachings. The book of Genesis speaks about the creation of man. God said: “Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness” (Gen 1:26). God speaks in plural, two words show this “let us” and “our”. This indicates a plurality of persons in God himself, that is to say, more than one person takes part in the creation of human beings. This Passage from Genesis and many others help us see a vision about the mystery of the Trinity in the Bible. The word “Trinity” is not found in the Bible, but we do find in it the essential content of the Triune God that acts as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In short, we see God acting as Creator (Father) in the Old Testament, acting as Savior (Jesus) and Sanctifying (Holy Spirit). Thanks to Jesus we know the presence of God made manifest in a relationship of three persons but one solo Dios. In his gospel, John (14:15-31) talks about this Trinitarian unity. I invite you to read this passage and meditate on this teaching of Jesus to his disciples, this teaching is now for you.

The revelation of the Triune God begins with the mystery of the Incarnation; He wanted to become man so we could know his divine nature and his closeness to man in a new way. “No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him” (Mt 11, 27). Jesus, the Master reveals to us who the Father is because He knows Him and He comes from Him. “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (Jn 14,9). You and I have been called to get to know the Triune God who reveals himself in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but in only one God. There are times in our journey of faith and spiritual life when we identify with the three persons, or with just one, depending of our faith experience and our prayer life. There are times when we identify more with God the Father because we long for His tenderness, his fatherly love. Other times, we identify more with Jesus because we long for salvation and forgiveness.

However, there are other times when we identify ourselves more with God-Holy Spirit because we want to become holy through his direction, light and wisdom. Of course, prayer made to one of the persons is heard by all three, because God is one. God is not divided. “The divine persons do not share the one divinity among themselves but each of them is God whole and entire: "The Father is that which the Son is, the Son that which the Father is, the Father and the Son that which the Holy Spirit is, i.e. by nature one God. Each of the persons is that supreme reality, viz., the divine substance, essence or nature” (CCC 253).

Our relationship with the Triune God begins with the Sacrament of Baptism. We are baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. This is why we say that our Christian faith is Trinitarian and we show this every time we begin a prayer making the sign of the cross. We do the same thing when we begin the Eucharist and the priest greets us saying, “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” St Paul used these words and we find them in today’s second reading and we use them in the Opening Rites of the mass. The celebration of the Eucharist is trinitarian; the prayers are directed at God the Father through Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen, that is, let it be so. The creed we pray every Sunday during mass is a summary of all the truths of the Catholic Faith. We say: “I believe in one God…, I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ… I believe in the Holy Spirit,… catholic church”. They show us that we have a treasure in our Christian and trinitarian faith, and that we’ll never be able to understand it in its totality; nevertheless, it is the nourishment for our faith life, our prayer and our relationship with the triune God.

This Sunday’s readings describe the nature of the triune God. God is love and He loves the world because it is His creation and he wishes for everyone to be saved from sin, from darkness, and he wants us to live in the light of Truth. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that anyone who believes in Him might not perish, but might have eternal life.” We can joyfully say “how wonderful is our God!” his only concern is for the well-being of all of us, his sons and daughters because he loves us and desires that we each love Him with all our being, all our mind and all our heart. He wants us lo be like Him. He proclaims to Moses I am “The LORD, the LORD, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love and fidelity.” Practicing our Christian Trinitarian faith should lead us to discover that we hold all of these attributes inside of us, they have been given to us so we can live our life in God’s image and likeness. How awesome!

Finish this meditation receiving the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and may he remain your heart forever. Amen.

D e l e s c r i t o r i o d e l P .

A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness

Signs of a Vocation to Priesthood

and Characteristics of a Good Candidate

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more

your priests, And those consecrated in the religious life. We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart.

Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!

For information on becoming a Religious Priest Missionary of the Holy Spirit or a Diocesan Priest contact one of the following people: Serra Club: Arthur Adams

Priests: Fr. Jose Ugalde, M.Sp.S. Fr. Jesus Sanchez, M.Sp.S.

14. A good candidate for diocesan priesthood has self-possession and self-mastery. Part I

Most priests in parish ministry would recognize familiar elements in this story.

I had finished a wedding Mass in the afternoon and stopped by the parish hall to make a brief appearance at the reception. Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. I happened to engage a man in conversation who had been celebrating with more than a few drinks. He had become quite talkative, and slurred his words a bit when he told me, “Father, I used to be Catholic, but thirty-five years ago, when my mother was dying of cancer, I called a priest to come give her the Last Rites. That priest yelled at me because I called him at home after nine o’clock. I have never been back to Mass in these thirty-five years and neither has my family.

Now, I do not know the specifics of this situation. I have no idea who that priest was or what was going on in his life thirty-five years ago. I do not know what else had happened between this priest and this particular family. Perhaps the man standing before me was unreasonable. I don’t know any of these things. But I do know that this man’s faith was obviously very weak at the time, hanging by a thread, and that the priest’s unkindness and lack of self-mastery damaged the Church.

Because a priest is an alter Christus, people expect more from him. They expect him to be like Christ, and they have a right to that expectation. That is why Jesus calls and equips us to become priests in the first place. As a retreat master said in one of our annual seminary retreats, “The three most important qualities in the life of a priest are: Be kind. Be kind. Be kind.” People are always going to be in very different places spiritually. Some have a very strong faith, and a curt, unkind word from their pastor after Mass will be easily shrugged off and forgiven: “Father must be having a bad day. Jesus please be with him today.” But the same word to people of weaker faith will send them off angry and bitter. They will tell at least ten others the story of the priest’s rudeness, and you can bet they won’t be at Mass the next Sunday.

Self-mastery means that a priest has good impulse control and he is able to control his anger and all of his emotions. He is in control of what he says and how he says it, conscious that people are very sensitive. He understands the proverb, “A word is a bird. Once it flies away, it cannot be recaptured.”

As we all know, the “social distancing” practices and suspension of gathering for Mass have created unique challenges to the way we practice our faith.

Nothing is more important than all of us taking the necessary steps to protect and ensure the health and well-being of our families, friends, neighbors, as well as our parish.

Although we are physically separated from the Eucharist---our church is alive and still on mission.

This year our parish share of the Appeal is $151,672. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back to us and we will put that towards recovery of lost offertory donations.

In addition, this year 10% of all the funds collected through the ACA (excluding our rebate) will be placed into a special Parish Solidarity Fund at the Archdiocese.

In this way, your donations will help us, but will also help other parishes recover.

The reality is that many of your fellow parishioners may not be able to participate this year, so your support is more important than ever.

Be assured of my gratitude for your gift –whatever the amount— and of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones!

Fr. Jose Ugalde MSpS

The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway, and we are

seeking everyone’s participation this year so that we reach

our goal of $151,672.

All contributions received in excess of this Archdiocesan

goal will come directly back to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as a

rebate.

Our 2020 ACA rebate goal will be used for lost offertory

donations.

If you gave to the Appeal last year, I ask you to consider

increasing your gift by 5% this year. If you are not sure

what to give, would you consider a gift of $365 ($1 per

day) ?

Because of the current situation, we have three simple

ways to for you to donate:
