Through the Miriam and Emmett McCoy Foundation, the McCoys have helped too many to count in Hays County, across Texas, and beyond.

Seton Medical Center Hays, Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center, Texas State University, San Marcos Animal Shelter, Kyle Log Cabin, Blanco Chapel and Spring Lake Natural Area are but a few beneficiaries of the McCoy’s generosity.

“Mom and Dad created the Foundation about 20 years ago,” explains Brian McCoy, Miriam and Emmett’s son. “They didn’t have a chance to give back early on, but as business grew, they were able to do so.”

Business did indeed grow – significantly. Emmett founded the McCoy Supply Company in the 1950s in Galveston, which later became the present-day McCoy’s Building Supply. In 1972, the family moved to San Marcos and saw the business expand to eight locations. By 1997, when Emmett retired, the business had grown to more than 90 locations with sales exceeding $400 million.

“After his retirement, Dad had more time to devote to charitable endeavors,” explains daughter Brenda McCoy Remme.

Sadly, Emmett passed away in January 2012, at the age of 88. But the family legacy of philanthropy lives on today. Last summer, Seton Medical Center Hays became the latest grateful recipient of the McCoy’s generosity, receiving a $1 million gift.

“It was Mom’s decision to give the gift,” explains Brian. “But, I know that Dad would be mighty pleased with that decision.”

“Following a stroke, Dad spent more than six years in and out of the hospital including a good deal of time at Seton Medical Center Austin. When Seton Hays opened, it was great to have a facility close by,” explains son Michael McCoy. “He had to stay in the ICU for six weeks and received an exceptional level of care.”

In recognition of the McCoy’s generosity, the ICU at Seton Hays now bears a plaque in honor of the family. A dedication ceremony was held in February.

At 90 years old, Miriam McCoy remains very active and still serves on the family’s Foundation Board, along with her three children.

“It’s fun for the family to work together,” says Brian. “But, ultimately, mom gets the final vote!”

Meet the Doctor

After training and working in Beverly Hills at that famous hospital of the stars, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Vamsi Krishna wanted to practice at a hospital where everyone is treated like a VIP. He believes he’s found that at Seton Medical Center Hays.

“We treat everyone like family,” he said. “This place keeps me smiling.”

A bright and talented interventional cardiologist, Dr. Krishna joined the Seton Heart Institute team based at Seton Hays last October. He earned his medical degree at UTMB Galveston and completed his interventional cardiology fellowship at UCLA.

He and his wife Dr. Sonia Krishna, a child and adolescent psychiatrist with the Seton Mind Institute, immediately felt comfortable and warmly welcomed by the community.“Hays County was extremely appealing because the population is growing rapidly,” said Dr. Vamsi Krishna.

“There are many people here whom I feel I can help because of their risk factors for heart disease—high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and tobacco use.”

Dr. Krishna is also helping to expand cardiac services to Caldwell County, providing care at his outpatient clinic at Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital once a week.

Dr. Krishna exudes passion for encouraging others down the path to better health. He speaks at local farmers’ markets on topics like “super foods,” and shares his research on the benefits of wine to your heart health. A popular topic! He and his wife are planning to launch a Saturday fitness group, Walk with a Doc, to promote community wellness.

When he’s not caring for patients, he’s enjoying time with his baby boy and two dogs, playing city-league basketball, or following his favorite team, the Houston Rockets.

Dr. Krishna’s office is located in Hays Medical Office Building 1, adjacent to Seton Medical Center Hays in Kyle, phone (512) 504-0860.

As residents of Luling, Lembo and Kelly Allen want their local hospital to be able to offer the highest level of medical care.

That desire led to a very generous $25,500 donation to Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital for the purchase of a state-of-the-art Philips ST80i Stress Testing System.

“Seton physicians are working hard to protect the people of Caldwell County and to expand our cardiac services to better prevent, screen for, and treat heart disease,” explains Vasmi Krishna, MD, interventional cardiologist. “Through the generosity of the Allen family, we will now be able to identify patients at high risk for future cardiac events and can intervene earlier to save lives.”

“We knew there were some things the hospital really needed,” explain Lembo and Kelly Allen. “But, a top priority was the stress test machine because we are aware of local residents who have been required to travel to out of town facilities for access to this critical piece of equipment.”

Stress tests have proven an important diagnostic tool that provide up-to-date, accurate information on the heart’s performance and allow a physician to more rapidly diagnose patients at risk of heart attacks. Because the

ST80i patient module is compact and wireless, patients are more comfortable and experience more freedom of motion during stress tests.

“This piece of equipment will enable local residents to receive the same cutting-edge technology that is available at other facilities,” says Arjun Mohandas, MD, vice chief of staff, SEBD.

“We hope this donation will serve as an example to others who may be able to support SEBD in the future,” add the Allens. “We are fortunate to be able to help out financially, and as residents of Luling, we feel a responsibility to help where we can because SEBD is such a valuable resource for our community.”

Your gifts provide care to children in need

Help Seton Southwest Build a CafeteriaYour community hospital, Seton Southwest, is here for you whether you have an emergency, are in need of surgery or physical therapy, or are a proud expectant mother. The hospital offers high-quality holistic care, close to home.

Seton Southwest has grown significantly since it opened its doors in 2000. In order to meet the needs of the rapidly increasing number of patients, their families and loves ones as well as the dedicated hospital staff that serves them, Seton Southwest needs a full-service cafeteria.

“A cafeteria is one service that I know will make a tremendous difference for our patients and all who work or visit here,” says Mary Faria, vice president and COO, Seton Southwest.

Seton Southwest hopes to raise just over $1 million over three years to fund an advanced kitchen. With your help, we can get the campaign started!

Patients, visitors and staff can “dine-in” with your support!

Care-A-Van Embraces Vulnerable ChildrenYour support of the Care-A-Van is lifting up and healing endangered children. Stop and think about that. It’s a precious gift to give. No example could be more telling than the Care-A-Van’s work with Legacy Ranch. Legacy Ranch, located on Highway 183 between Luling and Gonzalez, provides shelter and loving support for children who have been removed from unsafe homes. “We would get emergency calls night and day to find homes for children who are in danger, and there simply weren’t enough homes,” said Stacy Palm, who works for Legacy Ranch and its founding organization, Family Link Treatment Services. “We opened Legacy Ranch to welcome large sibling groups, saving them the heartbreak of separation.” Children who come to Legacy Ranch frequently have experienced recent trauma, abuse, or neglect. Many have never received proper healthcare or have only been treated in emergency rooms. The Care-A-Van was an ideal solution. “We examine the kids soon after their placement at Legacy Ranch and become their primary care home during their stay there,” explained Julie Carter, who is the operations manager for the Care-A-Van. “We bring some stability into their lives. It’s a perfect match.” The new partnership began in November and already, the Care-A-Van has treated more than 30 children to date.

The number of lives that will be positively touched will grow, but donor support is crucial. “Over half of the Care-A-Van’s operational funds come from philanthropy,” added Julie Carter. “Taking care of these children is what our mission is all about—your gifts ensure we can do that.” To support the Care-A-Van, please contact Carrie Cavanagh at [email protected] or (830) 875-7060. In the past 11 years, the Care-A-Van has had approximately 18,200 patient visits.

Since 2006, Family Link and Legacy Ranch have provided loving foster and adoptive homes to 3,500 children. For more information, visit www.legacyranchkids.com.

Pink Heals Last November, a pink fire truck made a heart-healing stop at Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital as part of the Pink Heals-Hays County outreach program—a volunteer-based program to bring love, hugs, and financial support to women fighting cancer and disease. “It’s all about giving a hug to someone who needs it,” said Chris Chomel, who works for the Seton-operated Caldwell County EMS and volunteers for Pink Heals locally and nationally. He explains that Pink Heals raises local dollars and keeps them local, making funds almost immediately available to the community. More than 60 women and their families arrived at Seton Edgar B. Davis for the opportunity to sign the Sutphen Engine fire truck in honor of their fight against cancer and disease, or in memory of those who lost that fight. “It was such an honor for Seton Edgar B. Davis to serve as a gathering place for this program that touches so many people in Caldwell County,” said Carrie Cavanagh, a Seton Hays Foundation associate who helped orchestrate the event.

Please join us in welcoming Linda Lotz, CFRM, who has been promoted as the new executive director of Seton Hays Foundation. She replaces Gerald Hill, who retired at the end of 2014. The Seton Foundations family is extremely grateful for Gerald’s accomplishments in furthering Seton’s mission through community support.

Linda brings great passion and focus to fundraising efforts for Seton Medical Center Hays, Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital, Seton Southwest Hospital, and Seton Smithville Regional Hospital. Since 2010, she has served with The Seton Fund as the senior development officer for Seton Medical Center Austin. Her many achievements include

raising more than $9 million in support of Seton Austin projects, most notably the successful completion of the campaign to build and equip the new Seton Breast Care Center. Among her prior roles, Linda served as the director of development for Hyde Park Schools in Austin. She established a nonprofit foundation benefiting the schools, secured key endowments, and led a capital campaign to build a new high school and athletic facilities.

“Hays County’s phenomenal growth presents exciting opportunities for our fundraising efforts in this key region,” Linda said. “Seton Southwest is the closest hospital to my house, so working south feels like coming home. I count it a blessing to join the incredible team already in place at the Seton Hays Foundation, thanks to Gerald Hill’s great work.”

Linda looks forward to meeting all of the wonderful board members, volunteers, and donors whose leadership and support have made Seton Hays Foundation’s efforts so successful. If you are interested in becoming more involved, now is a great time!
