President Report
I survived my first meeting which we held on July Fourth but without noticing it too much as we are having a NOT the 4th July Fellowship night, on Thursday 18th July, at Fat Bob's Bar and Grill.
We started our meeting with a brief introduction to our extend-ed use of Google Calendar by David Lea. We are using it to administer the club program and it is available in read only form to all members on our web site or on your PC, smart phone or Tablet. All you need to do is to install a free gmail account on your device, if you do not already have one. David Lea has offered to help any member in gaining access. Your President and Vice President can also help. By referring to the [email protected] Calendar you will be sure to have all the up to date information about upcoming events and when you are on duty. The calendar will also be on the introductory screen at every VGC meeting. The great strength of the Cal-endar is that any changes made instantly appear on every-one's version.
We had a great talk from Faina Levin, a young Sustainability officer from the Bayside Council, on our new Rubbish Retrieval System. She wisely gave a short presentation then opened it up to questions from the floor. With an impressive grasp of the

facts Faina handled the multitude of questions with hu-mour and good will. Most of us are obviously all worried and confused about what is rubbish, what is recyclable and what to do with E waste.
I am delighted to inform you that we have sent $8000 to help pay for this Year's Melbourne Indigenous Transition School's camp in September and received $2000 from District and $1000 from the Beaumaris Footy Tipping Competition winners who donated generously to this cause.
I have received emails from Paul Barcham (MITS Devel-opment) and Ed Tudor (Ex. Director) saying how much the 22 students look forward to this camp and how they will share this experience with us after September in words and pictures.
This week is NAIDOC Week when celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peo-ples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous com-munities, but by Australians from all walks of life. NAI-DOC Week is supported by the Federal Government. This year’s theme is: Voice. Treaty. Truth – Let’s work togeth-er for a shared future
We have asked Gary Hunter, an elder of the Wurundjeri people, to be our Guest speaker, at this week's meeting, to explain NAIDOC week to us more fully, as I am sure many of you ,like me, know little about it. You will find a link to the NAIDOC Week web site on our web site.
Indigenous Support Update
NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since be-come the name of the week itself.
This year the week runs from 7 to 14 July. To find out more go to this link. The link has been added to our Indigenous Support webpage.

Speaker - Faina Levin, Bayside City Council Topic: New Waste Collection Faina is Council’s Food and Green Waste Engage-ment Officer responsible for communicating the new Food and Green Waste service and process change to our community. The service will commence from Monday, 15 July 2019. She has been in sustainability and transport as well as communications and engagement - so now is almost like a combination of both. She is also cur-rently doing a Bachelor of Marketing with plans to commence a Master of Environmental Sustainabil-ity.
She has also trained up as ‘Climate Reality Leader’ which involved three days of training surrounding the climate science and developing some strong communication, advocacy and stakeholder engage-ment skills.

Overview of Message
We're expanding our existing green, garden waste service
to include food waste.
The new combined food and green waste service will transform Bayside's food scraps, leftovers and green waste into compost - saving it from landfill.
Our garbage bins are half full of food that’s been “thrown away”. By putting it into the food and green waste bin instead we can help to reduce landfill and greenhouse gases, while providing a valuable resource for Victorian farmers.
Our bins are going green(er)
From 15 July, we’ll visit to swap the red lid on your green waste bin with a new green one.
We'll also provide a handy caddy (mini bin) for your kitchen, compostable bags and an information pack to help you get started.
Food and green waste will be collected fortnightly and compost-ed for use by Victorian farmers.
What will go in your bins
Once you have your new green lid, you can start putting
food scraps into your food and green waste bin.
What can go in your bins from 15 July
Meat and bones
Fruit, citrus and vegetable scraps
Seafood including shells
Dairy leftovers including cheese
Bread, pasta, cereal and rice
Egg shells
Coffee grounds and loose leaf tea
Paper towels, newspaper and tissues
Cooking oil
Grass clippings
Flowers
Small branches
Weeds
Garden prunings
You must use the compost bags and not biodegradable or plas-tic bags to ensure your food and green waste is composted successfully.
Want a food and green waste bin?
If you don't already have a green waste bin then you can regis-ter for the service via the link below.
Pre-order your bin today
Your new bin will be delivered to you once the service begins mid-July for a one off charge of $100.20. This is the same charge paid by current users.

Ash Cloud
A huge plume of ash rises from Raikoke Vol-cano on the Kuril Is-lands, as viewed from the International Space Station on June 22, 2019. Astronauts shot this photograph of the eruption as the column of ash spread out in a part of the plume known as the umbrella region—the area where the den-sity of the plume and the surrounding air equalize and the plume stops rising. The ring of clouds at the base of the col-umn appears to be wa-ter vapor.
