A first major milestone of earning a College Associates Degree of Science is being attained by ten senior students from Falfurrias High School Senior Class 2020. According to Dr. María Rodríguez-Casas, Brooks County I. S. D. Superintendent, “This is a historical and recognizable achievement of the first ever senior class students attaining an associate’s degree before receiving a high school diploma. These senior students of Class 2020 are being recognized at Graduation for the attainment of their Associates Degree of Science. The majority of these students participated in a Summer Bridge Program at Coastal Bend College attaining dual credit college courses in the summer of 2016 as incoming freshman students. Although, Falfurrias High School is not an official Early College High School designation campus, BCISD offers incoming freshman students with an opportunity to enroll at Coastal Bend College and Texas A&M University- Kingsville for dual credit courses earning college and high school credit through their participation of the Summer Bridge Program. These recognized senior students attended Summer Session at Coastal Bend College with an opportunity to start earning a high school diploma and 60 college credit hours by providing dual credit at no cost to students; offering rigorous instruction and accelerated courses; providing academic and social support services to help students succeed; increasing college May 27-June 2–Brooks Co. Ceremonies began at 10:30 a.m. with the raising of the flag, readings, the gun salute and the recognition of three Purple Heart recipients at the Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Falfurrias. At 11 a.m., the attendees moved to the Brooks County Courthouse lawn for the unveiling of the Purple Heart marker designating the county as a Dr. Crissy Zárate Hinojosa Dr. María Rodríguez- Casas, Superintendent of Schools and Falfurrias High School Associate Principal Connie Herrera have announced the Class of 2020 graduation commencement speaker. Dr. Crissy Zárate Hinojosa was born and raised in Falfurrias and is a graduate of Texas A&M University- Kingsville with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Master’s in Business Administration. She has a Ph.D. in Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University’s College of Engineering and Computing.
