T he 18th Annual TRIAD Trial Ride will beheld Sunday, April 28, at the Neal John-ston Farm, Minor Hill, TN. Gates will

open at 11 am., and the ride begins at 2 pm.The ride is an annual event with proceeds usedto aid senior citizens of our community.

TRIAD is a program that was developed to re-duce crime victimization of our senior citizens.Three national organizations agreed that thecrime-related needs of older individuals couldbest be met by their cooperative effort so in1988, the AARP, International Association ofChiefs of Police and the National Sheriffs’ As-sociation, signed a cooperative agreement. This TRIAD of organizations has now evolvedinto all affiliated disciplines such as caregiversand first responders, who not only addresscrime prevention, but also post-victimizationaspects such as victim and witness assistance.

Law enforcement officers and older citizensmay not often have the opportunity to interactand get to know each other. The elderly mayonly have contact with officers when there is aproblem — not always a time for the officer orthe senior to appreciate each other’s finepoints, and a possible time for impatience, mis-understanding and miscommunication.

When the Limestone County TRIAD wasformed, active senior citizens were invited toserve in a capacity to bridge any gaps betweenlaw enforcement and seniors throughout thecounty. Surveys were conducted to identify sen-iors in need, promote crime prevention pro-grams, and not only reduce crime, but also theperception of crime. The TRIAD soon formedtheir own S.A.L.T. Council, an acronym for Sen-iors And Lawmen Together. Each year S.A.L.T.actively participates in charitable functions andmoney raised during this trail ride will be usedfor just that purpose.

You do not have to ride to have fun. Many spec-tators will attend just to enjoy the fellowship, the scenery, and the meal afterwards. This yearthe organizers will be serving chicken stew anddesserts furnished by S.A.L.T. members. Ad-mission includes a meal after the ride: adults$15; children 12 and under, $5; non-riders $5.

More information and directions are availableon the Sheriff’s Office website www.lime-stonesheriff.com, or by calling Sheriff MikeBlakely at 256-232-0111.

Iran into an old friend at theAthens Sportsplex while call-ing baseball the other day. It

was Granville “Pig Iron” Martin, ahigh school class-mate many yearsback who alsoplayed highschool footballwith me at Elk-mont High School.

Pig Iron, back then, was just likehis nickname - a rough and toughindividual who was fast as light-ning and a bull of a ball carrier tobring down. Pig Iron was all thisdespite having a bad leg as theresult of an accidental shooting.

He said he was at the ball fieldwatching his grandson play ball.He told me he just recently hadsurgery on his leg to removesome of the pellets that was leftin the leg from that shooting. Ican’t imagine how good of a foot-

ball player he could have been ifnot for that bad leg. No doubt inmy mind he could have playedcollege football in that day andtime.

I remember Pig Iron best whiletrying to tackle him one day in a“head-on” drill on the field. Notonly did I not bring him down, buthe ran me over, and left medazed. It was like hitting a freighttrain. But, not only was he stout,he was fast. He could out run usall in track- bad leg and all. Hewas one of the top runners in thecounty in the 100 and 220-yarddashes.

Pig Iron lived just down the roadfrom me off Highway 127 back inthose high school days. We lovedto hunt together. I remember wewent rabbit hunting one day nearhis home, and I used my little4:10 shotgun to kill my first rab-bit. I hit that rabbit on the run. Irecalled Pig Iron telling me thatwas one of the best shots he hadever seen. It was a good shot, Ithought, but it was a mighty luckyone.

It was good to see him again. Helives in the Athens area, and de-spite it being 48-50 years agosince we played ball, he’schanged very little. He told me heenjoyed my article on anotherschool buddy, Bobby Hanserd, who died recently. We talkedabout old times and then de-parted ways.

I had no trouble recognizing him.Pig Iron will always be Pig Iron.

It all started in 1956 when BobbyDavis and Fred Ferguson openeda barbershop in downtown Athens.

Now, the barbershop known as "Bob'sPlace" has three generations of bar-bers.

When Shauna Landers joined the haircutting Davis clan two months ago, notonly did it add another family memberto the business, it resulted in a mother, son and granddaughter working atBob's because you see Shauna's unclesJoe and Mitch and grandmother John-nie Davis already work and cut hairthere.

"I've been cutting hair forseven years now, but justjoined my family businesstwo months ago," Lan-ders said. "I cut hair forboth men and womenalong with doing perms,"she said. "I really enjoy ithere."

Shauna is the daughter of Joe andMitch's sister, Patsy.

Bobby Davis bought out Fred Fergusonin 1961 and started Bob's Place. His

son Joe joined him on Dec. 15, 1971,and wife Johnnie and son Mitchstarted cutting hair at the shop onDec. 1, 1976.

Bobby, who some believe belongs inthe hair cutting Hall of Fame, died of a

heart attack in 1993. The family car-ried on with the business after hisdeath.

Johnnie doesn't cut hair anymore, butshe is there helping run the businessevery day the shop opens. She said

she is better known today as the "go-pher."

Another regular at the barbershop isJoe's dog "Dixie" who is there everydayher master is. She's been doing thatfor the past five years. Dixie can't talkEnglish naturally, but she loves togreet you with that rubber ball in hermouth.

Now that Shauna is on board, it makesfor an even more family atmosphere atBob's. Believe me, it's a great place toget a haircut.

Iwas introduced to Butch Jar-rell through a mutual friend,Wayne White, of Athens.

Butch and his wife, Lesi, are plan-ning on returning to Brazil soon tocontinue their missionary work

with the localcommunitiesfound along theAmazon River andits tributaries. There are 33,000settlements foundalong the banksof the huge water-

way. There are currently 70 activeministries working with the peo-ple of the area. The missionariesprovide medical and spiritual sup-port to the folks of the Amazon.Thousands of children are born inthe basin each year, and withoutthe efforts of people such asButch, would never have the op-portunity to hear the word of God.

The team travels the river inboats to reach the communitiesthat line the banks of the giantriver. The boat also serves ashome to the missionaries as theyminister to the needs of occu-pants of the villages. Fish makeup a big part of the diet of thelocal people, and members of themissionary teams catch fish andgive the catches to the occupantsof the villages. The rivers arehome to the peacock bass and pi-ranhas, which are good fish foreating. Modern fishing tech-niques are introduced to the lo-cals like rod and reels andartificial bait . Butch said, “Thereis no such thing as losing a luresnagged on the bottom. Thelocal guides will jump into thewater and swim down and freeyour fishing bait.” I asked aboutthe dangers of fishing the Ama-zon River and Jarrell said morepeople are killed each year bygiant catfish than any other watercreature. The big fish can rangefrom 300 to 500 pounds andswallow a grown man.

It was a pleasure to meet the Jar-rell family and experience thelove they have for the Word ofGod and their desire to share itwith people they have never seenbefore. Also, this work places theteam in possible hostile placesand danger does exist. The greatcommission tells us believers togo into all the world and spreadthe Good News about JesusChrist to every creature. This isjust what Butch Jarrell and his

family members are planning ondoing. Remember this family inyour daily prayers.

The Jarrells work through Word of

Life Missionaries located out ofSchroon Lake, NY. To find moreabout the mission work visit theirweb site at: missions.wol.org

For years, teachers havebeen trying to introducetechnology into the class-

room. We’ve come a long wayfrom teachingwith the overheadprojector. The LCDprojector con-nected to thecomputer allowsteachers to ex-pand and sharelessons with each

other and present them to thestudents on a large screen. Ad-vances have been made with theinstallation of Promethiumboards in almost every class-room, which also allows for tech-nology and interactive use in theclassroom. Some schools haveportable laptop carts that teach-ers can check out and use intheir classroom, as well as com-puter labs in the schools. Re-cently, it was in the news thatHuntsville schools were going topurchase laptops, ornotebooks for eachstudent instead oftextbooks.

The Athens CitySchool Systemstarted an iPad PilotProject 2 years ago.It was so successful, that all the elemen-tary schools andAthens IntermediateSchool have some

iPads in the schoolsfor use in the class-rooms. Today’s stu-dents have grown upin a world immersedin technology andtend to gravitate to-ward it. Chris Hamil-ton, Coordinator ofTechnology Re-sources at AthensCity Schools, stated that the useof mobile digital devices inschools to supplement instruc-tion is growing rapidly in K-12 ed-ucation and is an integral part ofstudents’ lives. Also, it has beennoted that schools that use mo-

bile devices with students reportincreases in attendance, reduceddiscipline problems, and greaterinteraction for those studentswho might not otherwise partici-pate in classroom projects.

The use of iPads vary from

teacher to teacher. Some usethem for research, review of skillsusing installed apps, creatingvideos, trailors for books, etc.Teachers have said that the iPadusage in the classroom has beenquite useful, and they use themdaily. There are many apps thatthey use for math and reading.

Although Athens Middle Schooland Athens High School do havesome mobile devices that are al-ready being used with students, plans are currently being consid-ered for how and what devices tomore broadly utilize with studentsat these grade levels.

Today’s markers are:Athens Sacked and Plun-dered: On May 2, 1862,Union troops of the 19th and24th Illinois and the 37th In-dian Regiments commandedby Col. John Basil Turchinwent on a rampage thoughtthe town. They looted andplundered stores andhomes, stealing clothing, jewelry and anything ofvalue, destroying what theydidn’t want. For months af-terward, the soldiers stabledtheir horses in some of thetown’s churches, burned thepews for firewood and de-stroyed the interiors. men left for distant locales todefend their homes. Athenswas seized by the UnionArmy in May 1862. The re-sultant destruction of homeand businesses by theseforces is known as the “Sackof Athens.” The town was oc-cupied by the Union Army formost of the war. Athens washome to Gov. George S.Houston, the state’s firstpost- Reconstruction Demo-cratic governor from 1874-1878. The town was alsohome to Trinity School, founded after the Civil Warby the American MissionarySociety to educate formerslaves. Notable student andformer slave Patti Malone be-came a celebrated mezzo so-prano with the Fisk JubileeSingers. In 1934, Athens wasthe first town to receive elec-tricity from T.V.A. AlthoughAthens has grown, its citi-zens continue to celebrateits small-town atmosphere.

We have all heard thesayings about howhard habits can be to

break. Unfortunately, most of usknow from experi-ence how truethese sayings canbe. We all havebusy schedulesand it can be soeasy to allow ourchildren to de-

velop some unhealthy eatinghabits. Maybe we give in to re-quests for a second serving ofdessert and don’t really noticehow fast that package of cookiesin the pantry disappeared. Be-fore we know it, we have an un-healthy pattern of eating and facesome resistance to getting on anew path. If this is true for yourfamily, here are some ideas thatmay help!

Teach your child about food la-bels and how to compare differ-ent food choices. If eating toomany sweets is an issue, try tofirst offer a “better” choice. Forexample, recently in our SavvyKids Fitness program we com-pared food labels for chocolatechip cookies and chocolate gra-

ham crackers. The kids really gotin to making the comparisons incalories, fat, sugar and interest-ingly, serving size. They saw they

could eat many more chocolategraham crackers than chocolatechip cookies and still consumeless calories, fat and sugar. It

made them feel good and “savvy”about eating the chocolate gra-ham crackers and the chocolatechip cookies didn’t look so goodonce they learned the facts!

Once your child gets accustomedto making “better” choices, youare then ready to lead them on tothe “best” choices. Instead ofhaving sweet desserts after din-ner each night, move towardstocking the kitchen with fruitsand enjoy a nice fruit salad orother sweet fruit at the end of themeal. Make sugary sweetdesserts a “special” occasion, enjoyed maybe once or twice aweek. Once kids are in a patternor “habit” of healthy food choicesthat is what they grow to expect. It takes time and like most things, patience. But, it is so worth it tosee your child eating well and de-veloping a healthy lifestyle! Ahealthy lifestyle they will take withthem into their own homes some-day!

If you are interested in a classwhere your child can learn aboutnutrition and fitness, right here inAthens, check out…www.savvykidsfitness.com.

In the spring each year naturehas a way of telling the winteris giving away to spring and

good fishing. Humpy was alwaysthe first to say each year, “ Thedogwood trees are blooming, and

a full moon will behere in a coupleof days.” That wasthe signal to theboys it was timeto plan a fishingtrip to the best

crappie waters in the county, Beu-lah Bay, located just south ofJones Crossroad. TVA hadbacked up Wheeler Lake, and inthe spring the button willowbushes in 2 to 3 feet of waterwould be a perfect spot to findspawning slab crappies. Daltonhad worked at Pryor Field air stripduring the war with a man thatwent by the name of Parker. Dal-ton often would tell us of fishingtales told by Mr. Parker of the 2and 3 pound crappie he caughtwading the shallows of BeulahBay. Dalton had got his tele-phone number while working withhim a few years back. Daltonsaid, “ I think I will get in touchwith Mr. Parker and get us a fish-ing trip planned.” Dalton caught aride to Salem with Mr. Wise andgot the fishing trip planned fornext Saturday. All we needed tobring was our lunch ,fishing poles, and some creek Chubb min-nows. A minnow trap placed inthe Gaston Branch always sup-plied us with plenty of lively min-nows.

Humpy put out 2 minnow trapsand placed some corn bread inthem for bait. By Friday we hadseveral dozen minnows for ourfishing trip to Beulah Bay. Wecaught a ride to Tanner andwalked the rest of the way to Mr.Parker’s house. Mr. Parker hadaged a little since Dalton last

worked with him, but they were

glad to be re-acquainted. Mr.Parker said, “ Boys, we can rent awood boat for a dollar and paddleit around until we get to the goatpasture where we will fish. I wasthinking, “How can you fish in aplace where there are goats?” Ifound out before the water wasbacked up by TVA his fishing spotwas covered by goats. That’swhere it got its name.

Mr. Parker drove us to the lake inhis ‘49 Chevrolet truck . We allpiled in the back and couldn’twait until we got to the water. After renting the boat, the oldgentleman said, “ Them fish havereally been biting good. I wouldlike a mess if you boys have goodluck.” He went on to say, “Watchout for them cottonmouthsnakes. They are on the movewith this warm weather. Humpy’seyes got big as he said, “Ya’lldidn’t say any thing aboutsnakes.” Mr. Parker said, “Youdon’t mess with them and theywon’t mess with you.” With 4grown men in the old woodenboat, only a few inches of theboat was above water. I thought,“A snake can swim over the sides

of this boat easy.”

Mr. Parker said, “Boys, we are inthe goat pasture. Let’s catch aboat load of crappies.” Therewere clusters of these low to thewater bushes with green tops. Iremember they were thick, and itwas hard to drop a line besidethem without getting hung up. Mr.Parker had about 3 to 4 feet ofline on his cane fishing pole. Theshort line allowed him to placethe minnow in the middle of thebush. In a couple of attempts, Mr.Parker yelled, “ There he is boys!”and a 2.5 pound crappie brokethe surface. We found out ourfishing lines were too long, andafter a little modification we werein business catching fish. The fishwe were catching were going on afish stringer chain. After we had15 to 20 crappies on the stringer,Humpy pulled it up to add an-other fish and found a big watersnake had swallow one of thefish. Humpy commenced to beatthe reptile with the boat paddleuntil it dropped off the fish. Thisunnerved us for a little while, butwe went back to fishing and hada great day in the goat pasture. The fishing party brought 45 slab

crappies to the bank. Mr. MacLinwho rented us the boat got agood mess before we said goodby for the day.

Uncle Grady was waiting for us atthe Parker house and drove usand the pile of fish back to theGaston Holler. We cleaned fish till10 oclock that night. The fishwere fried for Sunday’s lunch andhushpuppies, fried taters ,cathead onions and ice tea toppedoff the meal.

Does your horse load on yourhorse trailer confidently?Do you get on the trailer

first and ask your horse to followyou? I would HIGHLY recommendnot getting on your trailer and ask-ing your horse to follow you. I haveheard of more concussions than Icare to remember by people doingthis and getting in a tug of war withtheir horse. Don’t do that. I wantyou to enjoy your horses and yourhorses feel safe with you.

I have heard many horror stories ofhow people load their horses. It isterrible how these horses areforced onto a cave on wheels. Peo-ple using butt ropes; they hooktheir hands behind the horse; theyhave put the rope around thehorses’ chest and through its frontlegs and forced it on the trailer;people have used winches to pullthe horse on; some have tried tobribe their horses onto the trailer. Ihave heard so many stories aboutwhat some people do to get ahorse on a trailer. If it weren’t sotraumatic for the horse, it would becomical.   I hope none of these car-toons fits you.

To teach a horse to trailer loadsafely you must first teach yourhorse to move forward when youask it to. Take some time to teachyour horse this for after he knowsthis, trailer loading will becomeeasy to teach.

There are several ways to teachyour horse to load. As I said earlier, one is NOT getting on the trailer infront of your horse. You will alsowant to teach your horse to backout instead of turning and comingout forward.

When teaching a horse to trailerload I generally use a long leadrope, at least 22’. This way I cangive the horse some drift and it isalso safer for me with a horse thatis very troubled.

As I said, the horse needs to beable to move forward off your cue.In teaching your horse to move for-

ward (keep in mind, all horses aredifferent and what I am about totell you, you may have to change foryour horse. We can adjust to fit thesituation and the horse) in additionto the 22’ rope I do use a 4’ com-munication stick and a 6’ string. This tool is as I stated, a communi-cation tool, not a make tool.

I will begin to teach the horse tomove in a forward direction by ask-ing with the lead rope first, then Iwill raise the 4’stick beside thehorse as to push his personalspace bubble, if he hasn’t moved Iwill twirl the stick and string onlythree revolutions and if no move-ment I will swing the string on thefourth revolution to tag the horsebehind the point of the shoulder, notin a make manner but in a bother-some manner. If no movement I willrepeat until there is a forward move-ment. I am ready to stop more thankeep asking. I am expecting thehorse to understand more than notunderstand. The instance the horsemoves I quit asking.

Once the horse understands theforward cue you can begin towardthe trailer. Not to the trailer but to-ward the trailer. (The doors are stillclosed for now). Send your horseforward between you and the trailerboth directions until your horse isnot bothered and moves confi-dently.

Now you may open the trailerdoors. Send your horse forward to-ward the opening, don’t force. When he tries to move toward the

trailer take away the pressure andallow him to stand and rest. Thenmove him away from the trailer. Youwill bring him back to the traileragain; this is the advance and re-treat. Each time you repeat this, your horse should become moreconfident. Allow him to take thetime he needs to get there. Do Notbe impatient. It may take a while.

First his nose goes in, then theneck, then the front feet and so on.He will probably back out many, many times before getting all theway in. That’s OK. It’s about himfeeling confident about getting in

and about you.

Once he’s in, DON’T SHUT THEDOORS. Allow him to come out asmany times as he wants. Once hegets comfortable getting in you willget to a point your horse will loadwhile you sit in the cab of yourtruck. I know, because I have doneit. Way cool. Please don’t force your horse intothe trailer, that’s not fair to yourhorse.

Old Flame…she used to be mine

April 25, 2013 the valley star Page 21

Think back and see if you can re-member that special girl that youhad a crush on……you chasedher, dreamed of her, then one dayyou finally worked up the courageto take her out and the relation-ship began. Then a strange

transformationtook place, yourwhole world re-volved around her,she is all youthought about andyou spent all yourhard earned

money on her. Everything wasworking out great and you lovedher so much, but as time went onyour relationship grew fartherapart and you didn’t seem tospend as much money on herand you began to see a few flaws

in her and you even seemed tolose your desire to spend asmuch time with her. Even if itlasted a long time, the relation-ship lost its spark and you some-times found yourself lookingaround at other girls (note toself…this can lead to big trouble).

Okay, have you figured out thatI’m not talking about a girl? I’mtalking about an old flame…yourold car you used to have, she wasyour baby, but now somebodyelse is driving her?? You sold her, traded her, etc…it doesn’t matterthe reason, the fact is, she’s notyours anymore! It’s a sad dayafter she is gone and you realizeyou wish you had her back. I’msure many of you can relate tothis.

The O-Jays in 1978 had a song ti-tled ‘Used to be my girl’ that hada few lyrics that should remindyou of that old car you wish youhad back! “I respect her, whenshe was mine, I used to neglecther, she wanted more than Icould give…And if I had thechance, I’d take her back, as amatter a fact, right away, liketoday…She used to be my girl”.
