THY KINGDOM COME

Join the Global wave of prayer - May 30th - June 9th

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are calling all Christians world-wide to pray between Ascension and Pentecost, for many to hear the good news of the gospel, and to make a commitment to Jesus.

This ' Thy Kingdom Come' movement was started in 2016. As in previous years, we are encouraged to pray for five people, friends, neighbours or family, to come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour.

In the Bible, we read these words of St Paul: I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew and then the gentile. (Romans 1 v16)

To give people a taste of what the Church family does when they meet together, we can invite people to special events in York churches and venues, and to our own Church on Sunday, or midweek, to a house group, to youth groups, to Messy Church and Squeals on Wheels.

We also have some family friendly Adventure prayer maps to give out all our church families, to encourage the whole

family to pray together. The Lord is good , a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust him (Nahum ch1 v7 ) If any one asks you what they have to do to become a Christian, just read Acts 16 v30 . It is a ready made response "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus , and you will be saved, you and your household. Rachel Parker.

THE ANNUAL MEETINGS FOR THE PARISH OF ACOMB

(St. Stephen with St. Aidan)

The Meeting of Parishioners and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting was held on Sunday 28th April 2019 after the morning service 39 Parishioners attended the meeting The Meeting of Parishioners dealt with the appointment of the churchwardens for the coming year. Lyndon Parker stood down as churchwarden after 6 years of service; he was thanked by the meeting and received a thank you gift for all his hard work. Rachel Parker stood again for a second year and was approved by the meeting. Unfortunately no one else had volunteered to take on the role of the second church warden. In light of this 2 parishioners, Anne Barker and Beth Savage volunteered to act as deputy church wardens to assist Rachel. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting dealt with appointments to the Parochial Church Council and Deanery Synod and others as were shown on the agenda; and reports on the proceedings of the PCC and activities generally.

Only 1 out of the 5 vacancies on the PCC was filled. There were no volunteers for either of the 2 vacancies for the Deanery Synod. Vicar Pete asked the meeting to pray and asked people to think about taking up these vacancies.

As a result of the lack of the second churchwarden Vicar Pete explained that the sidespersons/welcomers would have to take on some small extra duties at the end of the services.

Verbal reports were given by the Electoral Roll Officer and the Treasurer and all the other reports were included in the pack that came with the agenda.

As part of the vicar’s report, Pete showed a montage of slides showing the many activities that the Parish has been involved with over the previous year.

The meeting ended with questions/ about a disabled toilet at St Stephen’s; the changes that happened during Lent; and the Thursday Holy Communion Service.

Making God’s love visible in the

Middle East

Say the words “Middle East and North Africa” and very often the associations that spring to mind are negative ones: “wars”, “religious extremists”,“refugees fleeing violence”, “repression”. But there are other faces to the region. It is, of course, the birthplace of Christianity. Countries such as Iraq, Syria and Egypt have historic Christian communities that trace their roots back to the Early Church. Egypt’s Christians compose about ten per cent of the country’s population – almost ten million people. Evangelical churches have also established themselves in a number of Middle East countries from the C19th onwards.

TV gives a voice to the Church SAT-7 is a Christian satellite TV network that was founded in 1996 to serve these Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) believers. Its strapline is “Making God’s love visible”. Its vision is to see a growing Church in the region, confident in faith and witness, serving the community and contributing to the good of society and culture. Through SAT-7 MENA Christians have a unique opportunity to witness to Jesus Christ. SAT-7 broadcasts a wide range of programmes in Arabic, Persian/Farsi and Turkish. And they attract over 25 million viewers (IPSOS research, 2018). These viewers watch in countries stretching from Afghanistan to Morocco. Programmes that change lives Christians who live as a minority in their cultures share how the programmes strengthen their faith, and non-Christians tell us how SAT-7 corrects and deepens their understanding of Christianity. Dareb wrote to SAT-7 recently from Afghanistan: “I was with an extremist group and then separated myself from them. I want to experience Christianity. I want to get away from hate and immoral things. After watching your programmes, I felt so good and got in touch with two of your Afghan programmes.”

This is just one of the hundreds of messages SAT-7 receives every day from viewers whose hearts and lives are being touched by Christ. You can read more by visiting www.sat7uk.org. Andrew Bailey, SAT-7’s ‘ambassador’ for Acomb parish, has more information, which will also be available at ‘Images of Israel; Pictures of Palestine’ (see elsewhere in this magazine)

Images of Israel: Pictures of Palestine This is the title of a presentation I shall make, based on the six weeks I recently spent in Jerusalem. It will take place at St Aidan’s on Monday June 3rd at 10 am, repeated on Tuesday June 11 th at 7.30 p.m. Free admission and Middle Eastern refreshments. Donations divided between ‘Embrace the Middle East’ (formerly Bible Lands Society), SAT-7 and ‘Musalaha’ which works for reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis. The presentation will focus on the places Jesus walked; the people of the land today; the politics which divide; the peace which still eludes. There will be information about the three societies and a stall selling Palestinian Fair Trade food and crafts. Further information 01904 914516

WATSAN (water and sanitation) is a small Christian charity with big ambitions of raising £25,000 by its fifth ‘walk for water’, to be held in the Quantock Hills in Somerset this month. WATSAN works with two Anglican dioceses in south-west Uganda to provide safe drinking water and hygienic latrines to schools and rural communities.

Andrew Bailey is hoping to walk 15 miles (with an ascent of about 2,000 feet!), and welcomes any sponsors!

PARISH GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Rachel and John Parker would like to thank the many people who continue to work maintaining St Aidan's, St Stephen's, and the curate’s house and garden.

Extensive work was carried out last year involving chain saws and trowels and Good Work gym. This year on Monday, June 10th from 6.30 pm for 30 mins. Good Work gym (about 25 young people) are helping us at St Aidan's. If you are available to help supervise and /or lend labelled spades and forks, it would be much appreciated.

A list will be put in both churches for you to consider and tick as appropriate. Thank you so much.
