Applications Seized stud removal and thread recovery The removal of seized studs, from assemblies such as valve and pump bodies, is a common requirement. Rolls-Royce has produced a range of portable machines to ensure this task can be carried out in a controlled manner, without risk to the component. In cases where galling or environmentally assisted cracking has led to thread damage within the flange, a thread insert may be required. The same machine that was used to remove the seized stud can be used to recover the original thread form. Powerful, hydraulically operated machines have been produced for carrying out such work on stud sizes up to M130. Milling and single-point cutting Whether the requirement is for dressing a pump bowl, milling a keyway in a pressure vessel closure head, or trepanning out a diaphragm, Rolls-Royce’s experience in producing portable milling and single-point cutting machines ensures that the most effective solution is developed for the purpose. In many instances the machines have been developed to operate on specific components. These items are often located in demanding situations, where environmental conditions and operating space envelopes place additional constraints on the equipment design. Supporting capabilities

Various single-point and multi-point portable cutting machines have been designed and built to suit different applications. In particular, cutting and dressing machines have been designed for:

• Remoteor‘hands-on’operation

• In-airorunderwateruse

• Cuttingcarbonsteel,stainlesssteelornonmetalliccomponents.

Applications

Seized stud removal and thread recovery

Theremovalofseizedstuds, fromassembliessuchasvalveandpumpbodies, is a common requirement. Rolls-Royce has produced a range of portable machines to ensure this task can be carried out in a controlled manner, without risk to the component.

Weld severing and prepping

An extensive range of trepanning and orbital portable milling machines has been developed. Particular attention has been paid to ensuring operations can be carried out in a controlled manner, with minimum risk to high integrity plant. The trepanning machines were designed to cut out the welded diaphragm seals that act as manways or handholes on pressure vessels. Singlepoint and orbital milling machines have been produced to sever canopy and toroid seal welds used on high pressure systems. The same machines allow the cut surface to be dressed to the original weld prep geometry.

Nuclear decommissioning and component size reduction

Rolls-Royce has been involved in several decommissioning projects, from feasibility study through to implementation. Examples of equipment produced, forcomponentsizereduction, includeaspecialpurposebandsaw and an underwater reciprocating saw. The bandsaw was used for the underwater sectioning of the internal components of a small nuclear reactor. The underwater reciprocating saw allowed the controlled cutting of components, by means of a system of automatically activated interlocks, on a stainless steel machine bed.

Experience/References

With an unbroken history of support to the UK naval nuclear power programme that spans 40 years, techniques and equipment have been developed to support repair, refit and maintenance activities. Whether meeting requirements planned well in advance, or providing a rapid response to emergent problems, the same level of quality and attention to detail is applied.

Having developed a deep understanding of the particular problems associated with working on naval and civil nuclear power plant, the team have for many years supplied their expertise to customers on a wide range of non nuclear related projects.
