THE DEAN’S LETTER TO MEMBERS As we stand poised for the fall season, excited about the opportunities and challenges that await us, let us cast our eyes back and bask for a moment in our magnificent accomplishments of the past year under Cheryl van Ornam’s leadership. In addition to a fine program year, we put on an outstanding regional convention. I can still hear Chris Martin at the November 11, 2013 meeting of the executive committee asking in his quiet, thoughtful way if we might want to consider hosting a regional convention in the summer of 2017. And as they say, the rest is history. Chris wrote the proposal, Kenna Payne took on the position of chairman, and with regional counselor Glenn Rog-ers at our back, we were on our way. Chapter members took on jobs large and small as performers, presenters, committee chairs and members, and volunteers. Thank you. In addition, we had warm cooperation from local churches, their musicians, and the press. Many of Richmond’s best organs were presented to attendees and free to the public.

We must have some great karma because everything went beautifully, including the weather and the technology. Recitals were thrilling, work-shops were exciting, the program and program book were great, buses ran on time, the food was excellent, and we made a profit! A particular debt is owed to those chapter members and friends who stretched their wallets in order to sponsor all aspects of this endeavor. Thank you. As the convention slides into memory, may we be especially grateful that our chapter has so many fine organists. Those who performed in the convention shined a bright collective light on our chapter. 2017 MID-ATLANTIC CONVENTION UPDATE I’m sure you thought you’d heard the last from me about the convention, but I have one more piece of infor-mation to share with you –

$31,000 net profit

If you had spoken with anybody on the Steering Committee about 8 months ago, we were starting to worry about the financial success of the convention. But all our hard work and planning paid off, and we not only

exceeded all of our revenue budgets, we also were successful in watching the money we spent. All of these factors resulted in this final net amount, earned on a revenue base of $143,000. This is a phenomenal return on the revenue level. This amount does not include a $5,000 contribution from the chapter to the convention, which would increase the overall profit to $36,000. This chapter contribution is excluded from this report to you, since it is a transaction / contribution from one pocket of the chapter to the other. However, it will be included in the reports to the national AGO. As I am writing this (in mid-August), there are still a few more very minor loose ends to tie up, and a report to finalize and file with the AGO national office. I will have more details available at the September Chapter meeting – be sure to be there, so we can celebrate this success together.

What does the Federal Trade Commission’s Final Order and Consent Agreement mean to the Richmond Chapter, AGO?

On pages 6 – 11 of the August 2017 issue of The American Organist, there are several documents pertaining to the agreement between the FTC and the national AGO. They include “FTC Approves Final Order and Consent Agreement” (May 26, 2017), and the AGO documents Code of Ethics, Code of Professional Standards, and Discipline (January 27, 2017). During the Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention in Richmond in June 2017, Dean Cheryl Van Ornam signed the chapter compliance document and submitted it to James E. Thomashower, Executive Director and Compliance Officer of the national AGO. Any chapter not signing the agreement will be dropped from the national AGO. The bottom line is that the Guild must refrain from having rules that restrain competition and harm consumers. Under the order, the Richmond Chapter has agreed to accept the following two important precepts: 1. The AGO must stop restraining its members from soliciting work as musicians. (The old Code of Ethics specifically stated that members must not seek employment in a job currently held by another organist.) 2. The AGO may not issue compensation schedules, guidance, or model contract provisions for members to use to determine their compen-sation. However, the Guild is preparing new documents acceptable to the FTC to take the place of those it has withdrawn.* Chapter members are encouraged to read the documents in full in TAO. * The Richmond Chapter has been in compliance with precept 2 for many years, as pointed out by Betty Girardeau in her letter to the editor in the February 2017 TAO, which was referenced by Mr. Thomashower in the June TAO. MEET OUR NEW CHAPLAIN The Reverend M. Sue Reid is a retired Episcopal priest living in Williamsburg with her husband, Jon Strandberg, a border collie/labrador mix, and two cats, mother and son. Sue and Jon moved from Seattle in June of 2015, fulfilling Jon's wish to retire near Colonial Williamsburg. Sue most willingly came along and occasionally fills in at Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Southern Virginia. She also serves as the chaplain for the Deacons' School of the three Episcopal dioceses in Virginia. Growing up in the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Louisville, KY, Sue early on sang in the children's choir and developed a desire to learn to play the or-gan. When a new organist came to the church (by then a United Church of Christ) in the early 1960's, she found a willing teacher. DePauw University in Greencastle, IN was her next stop, where she studied with Arthur Carkeek, became a student member of AGO, and eventually was confirmed in the Episcopal Church. Art was an early promoter of Fisk organs and had spent a sabbatical working in the Beck-erath factory in Germany. Both Art and his wife, Maureen, had studied at Union

Seminary in New York City and that was Sue's next stop, arriving there in the fall of 1970. In between her Union years she spent summers on the staff of the All State Girls division at the National Music Camp at Interlochen. Sue's starting point had been a Master of Sacred Music degree, studying organ with Vernon de Tar. Events in the Episcopal Church led her to shift her emphasis to theology. She completed her SMM in 1972 and stayed on for another year to begin the Master of Divinity pro-gram. After completing her studies at Virginia Seminary in Alexandria, Sue was ordained a deacon in 1976 and priested in 1977, first serving as a curate in Owensboro, KY and then as an interim in Louisville. She then served in Columbus, Ohio for 8 years, 4 as associate at St. Ste-phen's on the campus of Ohio State and 4 as rector of St. Edward's. After that, she spent 16 years in Indianapolis, where she served on the staff of the Bishop of Indianapolis and later as rector of St. Alban's. Her last full-time ministry position was on the staff of St. Mark's Cathe-dral, Seattle, for 3 years. Over the years, Sue has been part of the leadership of the Association of Diocesan and Liturgy Commissions of the Episcopal Church, Chair of the Music Commission of the Diocese of Southern Ohio, a member of the Association of Anglican Musicians, and of both the Standing Commission on Church Music and the coordinating committee for the Leadership Program for Musicians in Small Churches. For a year or two in the early 1990’s, she served as the National Chaplain for the American Guild of Organists. It's a joy for Sue to return to the American Guild of Organists after some time away.

JOHN DEMAJO—AN APPRECIATION

As our new season begins, the chapter would like to acknowledge and thank our retiring newsletter editor and publicity chairman, John DeMa-jo, for his years of service. A refugee from the Hurricane Katrina disaster in Louisiana, John settled in Richmond in 2008, and joined the Rich-mond Chapter after serving as secretary and treasurer of the New Orleans AGO chapter for many years. In his association with our chapter, he was active not only as newsletter editor and publicity chairman, but also as a member-at-large on our executive committee, and most recently as publicity chairman on the steering committee for the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention. John has performed in Guild recitals, often demonstrating his interest and love for the theatre organ. His musical training began at the age of twelve when he studied piano with his grandmother, recitalist Marcellita Nicolini Bogan. At age fourteen, he went on to study with veteran theatre organist and orchestral arranger Gloria Smuck. Throughout his college years, he moonlighted as a jazz pianist and organist in lounges on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street, while also holding church organist positions at First English Lutheran Church and St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Louisiana. As an organist, he has performed “silent movie with organ” programs at numerous venues around the country, and was elected to the national board of directors of the American Theatre Organ Society in 2007. He presently serves as presi-dent of the Virginia Chapter of ATOS, as well as president of the Richmond Railroad Museum, and organist at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Richmond. John's experience and talents extend outside of the music world. After completing his formal education, he served for over a decade as Direc-tor of Engineering for the City of New Orleans. In 1980, he founded his own successful engineering and construction company, which he managed for over twenty-five years. After the 2005 loss of his home and business, John and his wife Mary, a thirty-year career librarian, decided to move to Richmond to be near his sister and niece, who were already living in Glen Allen. Following a recent debilitating bout with the treat-ment of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, John has been forced to cut back on his activities somewhat, which brought about his decision to step down from his official duties with the chapter. He plans to remain active as a chapter member, enjoy more time with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law, and pursue his hobbies of ham radio, railroad history, organ building, and collecting communications-related antiques. Please join the executive committee in wishing John the best and extending our thanks for his service to the chapter.

BEAUTIFUL CONTINUO ORGAN FOR RENT The Bennet & Giutarri organ is an excellent instrument for accompanying your vocal or instrumental ensemble. The voic-ing and speech is exceptionally fine and regular from note to note. The tone is gentle and supportive. There is no strident, piercing sound. All the pipes are wood and stable in pitch. Tuning is normally performed with equal temperament however some unequal temperaments may be set. The transposing keyboard allows for several different pitches. The organ can be delivered to your performance venue two days prior to use. It is tuned the day prior to use and then picked up not later than the day after use. Renter is responsible for the safe keeping of the organ while in possession and arranging ready and easy access for delivery, tuning and pick up. We’re on the Web and on Facebook! http://www.richmondago.org

DID YOU KNOW?

Hello! I’m Ryan Tibbetts, and I am the new Stoplist Editor, with David Starzer assisting with technical support and formatting. I am a relatively new arrival to Richmond, having moved here in 2015 when my wife accepted a position on the chemistry faculty at VCU. For the past year I served as the inter-im organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and this September I will begin serv-ing as Director of Music at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. I am also beginning my third season as the Artistic Director of both the Central Virginia Masterworks Chorale and the Richmond Concert Chorale.

I’m going to try to come up with something interesting to do with this space, but for now, I would like to thank Nancy Reed for inviting me to serve in this capacity, and to especially thank John DeMajo for his invaluable assistance in getting me start-ed in this post—any bumps or errors (and there may be a few—please bear with me) are wholly my responsibility! One editorial note: The bios for our student scholarship recipients will appear in the October issue this year. I enjoyed meeting many chapter members at the convention this summer (my first AGO convention!), and I look forward to getting to know many more of you over the coming year. -Ryan [email protected]
