The Year 13 Geography Class at Bay of Islands College is planning a trip to Peru! Why Peru? The purpose of our trip is to observe aspects of a developing country, interact with a culture other than our own, build greenhouses for a village of indigenous people high up in the Andes Mountains, and learn about and explore ancient Inca ruins. We look forward to experiencing the contrast of our own cul- ture with the culture of the Peruvian People. We know this trip will provide a wider perspective on the options available to us in our future careers. How You Can Help We are so grateful to the community for the amazing on-going support of our fundraising efforts. The Year 13 Geography Class at Bay of Islands College is planning a trip to Peru! Why Peru?

The purpose of our trip is to observe aspects of a developing country, interact with a culture other than

our own, build greenhouses for a village of indigenous people high up in the Andes Mountains, and

learn about and explore ancient Inca ruins. We look forward to experiencing the contrast of our own cul-

ture with the culture of the Peruvian People. We know this trip will provide a wider perspective on the

options available to us in our future careers.

How You Can Help

We are so grateful to the community for the amazing on-going support of our fundraising efforts. Future

fundraising efforts coming up include raffles, hangi, market days, and casino and quiz nights.

You or your organisation can contribute to our fundraising efforts by making a donation to our Peru Trip

Account at Bay of Islands College, or donating to our “Give-a-Little” page at :

http://givealittle.co.nz/org/boicperutrip2015 And finally, our class members are available to do neighborhood work projects as another way of

earning money. If you have a project that could use a little Year 13 help, please contact the College and

we can arrange to help you!

Again, many thanks for all of the good wishes and support!

Gateway 2015 is well under way with Gateway Applications from 66 students to date, who are real keen

to explore opportunities in the community with employers to gain valuable insight into the working life

as well as employment skills in industry.

The Gateway programme is designed to strengthen vocational pathways from school to the workplace.

Learning in the workplace compliments the learning in the classroom. The skills and knowledge gained

in the workplace will be assessed and credited when students have achieved the requirements needed.

RED SHIRTS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

We have enlisted Toni O'Donoghue of Service IQ who have partnered with The Warehouse, Waipapa

offering students a taste of what it is like working in retail. This programme runs nationwide and consists

of 10 days work based training covering the principles of customer service identified by the industry as

essential for the retail workplace, including; communication skills, personal presentation, product

knowledge and team work. If deemed competent on completion of the placement the students gain the

Service IQ Customer Service Award Certificate with 27 Level 2 Credits towards their NCEA.

Three Year 12 students; Liam Goile, Mikayla Gorrie & Darlene Turner are well into the Red Shirts in

Schools Programme.

Rugby 7’s: The Open Boys 7’s team competed in

the Northland Championships where they finished 3rd

equal. The Open Girls 7’s team will compete in the

Northland competition at Hikurangi this week. With

little competition in Northland for the U15 Girls squad,

Bay College has qualified straight through to the

National Championships in Mt Maunganui next week.

The team would like to express its gratitude to the Lions

Club of Kawakawa for their donation to support the

teams’ fundraising and also to the Northland Rugby

Union, Moerewa Rugby Club and Ohaeawai Rugby Club

for their financial assistance as well. It will be a brilliant

experience for our girls and an opportunity to be

“noticed” for regional or national representative teams.

The U15 Boys 7’s team won the North Zone competition

and were hoping to knock off Whangarei Boys for the

Northland title but never got there. The team was upset

early on and advanced through to the Bowl final which

they won handily.

Athletics: After an immensely successful College Athletics Day, Totara House easily prevailed to defend their

inter-house trophy. Once again Kauri finished runner’s up with Rata House 3rd and Miro 4th. From this event the College qualified 29

students to take part in the Northland Secondary School Athletics Championships at Kensington. Congratulations to Wairua Simon-

Hau who won the Northland Snr Girls High Jump title and to Year 9 student Whitiora Haunui Tipene who won gold in the Northland Jnr

Boys Javelin. A number of other students placed in the top three as well.

AFL: The Northland Secondary School competition was

staged at Kensington in February with Bay College competing

against Whangarei Boys and Kerikeri. With only one reserve on

the bench and most of the boys playing a League game the

previous night, it was going to be a challenge defending the title

won last year. In the end, a close loss to Boys High followed by a

thumping from Kerikeri sealed Bay’s fate. Of note: Te Kopa

Tipene Thomas was selected to play for the NZ Senior Hawks

against an Australian side and will play in Wellington at Westpac

Stadium in the April school holidays. Southen Smith, Max Stuart

and Ben Armstrong were invited to trial for the NZ U16 team and

from there Ben was one of only two Northland boys selected to the

New Zealand team. He will be competing in Sydney very soon

against select Australian teams.

Ki o rahi: The Ki-o-rahi team qualified

for the National Championships last year and

will be travelling to Gisborne to compete in the

first week of the school holidays. The

fundraising is well under way and the team is

looking for an improved placing from last year.

Swimming: Jeremy Elliott led the Bay College

contingent of swimmers winning

gold in three of his events and

silver in the other. Of note, Jeremy

won gold in U18 races and yet he’s

only in Year 9! Jeremy is nationally

ranked in his age group and we look forward to following

his progress through his secondary school years.

Surfing: Another large contingent of Bay College

students attended the Surfaris 2 day Surf

School to gain qualifications and

expertise on the surf boards. It has

become so popular that another trip to

the Surf School will take place in Term 3

for Year 9 students.

Futsal: Also known as Indoor Soccer, Bay College sent

three Futsal teams to the Northland Champs com-

peting in the U19 Boys, U16 Boys and Open Girls.

Although the placing weren’t great, the students

enjoyed the smaller ball format.

Touch: The Senior Boys and Girls

teams were once again well

prepared for the Northland

Secondary School Champs at

Lindvart Park in Kaikohe. The Girls

team went through section play

undefeated but came up against a

determined Whangarei Girls team in

the final, who prevailed this time

with Bay finishing runners up. The

Boys team managed to again make

the semi-finals but couldn’t advance

any further, finishing 3rd equal. The

Girls team are travelling to Massey

in Auckland to compete in the Zone 1

R e g i o n a l T o u r n a m e n t .

Congratulations to Bayleigh Bentley-

Hape who gained selection in the

U15 Tai Tokerau Touch Team that

c o m p e t e d a t t h e N a t i o n a l

Championships at the beginning of

the year.

Outdoor Bowls:

Two Northland junior

players, Brandyn Sigley

and Lukas George will be

competing at the Northland

Secondary School Tournament this week in

Whangarei.

Coaches needed urgently: Coaches are being sort for some of the winter codes – Yr 10 Netball, Boys &

Girls Soccer, 1st XV Rugby, U15 Rugby and Boys & Girls Hockey. Please contact Lynda Scott on 4041055 Ext: 851

or on 021 040 3643 if you are able to help out either as a Coach or a Manager. Thank you.

League: Rugby League continues to

be one of the most popular codes at Bay

College and we had 23 senior students

registered to play this year. The boys

have had two very difficult opening

matches against Whangarei Boys and

Kamo, both of whom qualified last year to

attend the League Nationals. The Whan-

garei schools were too good for Bay

College but a reprieve came with a solid

win against Tikipunga, backed up with a

difficult and controversial loss to

Dargaville. The boys now enter the

playoffs as the season comes to a close

and will play Northland College in

Kaikohe next Wednesday, kicking off at

4.30pm.

Volleyball: Senior Girls had a very

good year after qualifying through the

Northland Preliminary Tournament. In

the Finals Tournament Bay College made

it to the semi-finals before going down to

Kerikeri in a very tight 3rd set. The

overall finish of 4th is the best the girls

have had since 2008. The Senior Boys

got off to a slow start in the Preliminary

Tournament which meant they had to

knock off one of the better teams to

advance to the Finals Tournament. The

talent is there but they couldn’t quite put

it together. With most of the players

returning next year, the boys will

certainly look to make a finals

appearance.
