Friends of NOF Newsletter Issue # 10 - Winter 2017 Equipment Donation Program NOF’s equipment donation program doesn’t get enough press, considering the impact it has on the communities it serves. NOF accepts old, new, or refurbished medical/surgical equipments, instruments, and supplies to be donated to under resourced facilities around the world. Whether it is an organization needing to let go of some of their inventory, or a hospital needing to dispose of old to make room for new equipment, or retiring surgeons who would like to see that their instruments have a longer life, NOF can be their answer. This year with the help of Dr. Gordon Deen and Ms. Delia Ortega, NOF’s equipment donation program has been busy collecting and sorting. In addition, Dr. Philipp Aldana is working on acquiring an image guidance system. Stay tuned to see which communities these supplies will serve.

NOF in South Africa

Dr. Philipp Aldana represented NOF at the CURE Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida meeting in Capetown, South Africa on October 30, 2017. At that meeting he met with other neurosurgeons that were treating hydrocephalus internationally using techniques developed by Dr. Ben Warf in Uganda. Dr. Aldana presented a report on the the Southeast Asian region and the hydrocephalus partner treatment locations in Manila and Cebu. It is interesting to know that 3 neurosurgeons attending the conference used to be recipient’s of the NOF Benigno Aldana Jr. scholarships to the AAACPN - Drs. Ronnie Baticulon (Philippines), S. Mukherjee (Bangladesh) and My Le Quang (Vietnam), with their educational path to learning coming full circle.

All neurosurgeons are from Jacksonville, however, each will bring their individual experts to the ESM. Non-medical volunteers will also be part of the ESM team. ESM 2018 will see NOF partnering with Mission:Brain, which is holding a mission trip in Manila. The two groups will share lecturers and expertise during the missions to maximize impact to help the community, educate the providers and raise awareness of neurosurgical disease.

NOF & Social Media

You may have seen us on Facebook and probably even liked a photo or so. But if you haven’t heard yet, NOF is on Instagram, too! In conjunction with the summer Chipotle fundraiser event and Dr. Sara Ganaha’s talk at Kernan Baptist Church regarding her road to neurosurgery, NOF’s Instagram (NOF_JAX) was launched last summer. With this social media tool, our goal is to reach people who have been impacted by NOF’s programs — patients, families, organizations, and residents of neurosurgery — to learn more of their personal stories. Simultaneously, we hope to gain new friends locally and internationally and embark on our journey to service, educate, and support underserved communities. Go ahead find us on Instagram and start following!
