Server Bundle updates using Dell SDP Catalog and SCCM

5

Executive summary Efficient management of software and hardware updates for servers has become a critical activity. In an enterprise environment with thousands of servers it has become very complex and time consuming as the Administrators have to select the updates, plan the whole update process and deploy the updates to the right set of servers with minimum downtime.

Dell is constantly developing ways to improve server manageability with simple solutions. Dell SDP Catalog, along with Microsoft’s SCCM, SCUP & WSUS, provides a solution in updating Dell systems to latest BIOS, raid controller firmware, NIC firmware, drivers and other available Dell applications. This solution helps Administrators to manage software updates seamlessly using WSUS and SCCM.

Introduction This technical whitepaper describes End to End flow for Bundle updates on Dell servers using Dell SDP Catalog and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007. It provides an insight of Bundle updates, Component updates using Dell SDP (Software distribution package) Catalog, Microsoft System center Update publisher (SCUP) and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). Sections in the whitepaper include:

1. Importing Dell SDP Catalog into Windows server update services (WSUS) using the SCUP tool.

2. Publishing Bundle Updates from SCUP to SCCM. 3. Configuring System Center Configuration Manager and discovery of client systems 4. Deploying the updates to the Dell target systems using SCCM.

In addition, this whitepaper also includes troubleshooting tips for proper Dell Bundle updates.

About Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007

System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007 is used by more enterprises than any other client management solution. It comprehensively assesses, deploys, and updates servers, client computers, and devices across physical, virtual, and mobile devices.

About Microsoft System Center Update Publisher (SCUP)

Microsoft System Center Update Publisher (SCUP) is a stand-alone tool that enables independent software vendors such as Dell or line-of-business application developers to import software update catalogs, create and modify software update definitions, export update definitions to catalogs, and publish software update information to a configured Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server. By using Updates Publisher to define software updates and publish them to the WSUS server, Configuration Manager 2007 is able to synchronize the custom updates from the WSUS server database to the site server database, enable client computers to scan for custom update compliance, and provide administrators with the ability to deploy custom updates to client computers.

About Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)

It is increasingly important for administrators to keep their networks safe and secure. Instead of each workstation or server manually connecting to Microsoft Update, testing updates and then deploying updates using traditional methods, server administrators can use WSUS to download updates centrally

to an internal server. Once updates are authorized in WSUS, they’re also deployed internally and reporting tools keep administrators informed of patch progress through an administrative console.

Integrating Dell SDP Catalog with SCCM 2007 Dell SDP Catalog is used to push server updates using Microsoft management consoles like SCCM. The update information is part of the catalog which is then imported to SCUP. Later updates are published from SCUP to WSUS and then to SCCM. Dell Business Clients (Servers) receive updates from SCCM when the SCCM admin publishes updates to the clients. There are four categories which SDP Catalogs are divided into

BIOS

– Metadata of BIOS update for all generation of servers

Bundles

– Bundles are a logical grouping of one or more updates. Bundles themselves do not have a payload (binary update) but instead reference other updates that have payloads (or other software updates/components). Basically, Bundles have pointers to all the components applicable to that server.

Drivers and Application

– OS-specific drivers for hardware components and software applications

Firmware

– Firmware for all internal and external peripherals and systems.

Troubleshooting tips for proper Bundle updates 1. Updates fails to publish from SCUP to WSUS

> Verify in SCCM Server under C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc hosts file add an entry for ftp.dell.com as “143.166.170.10 ftp.dell.com” has been entered.

> Properly set the proxy authentication value Use proxy server when synchronizing. Give the port no and proxy server ip address under Site database >Site Management > Site Settings >Site systems. Select the distribution point and double-click on ConfigMgr Software Update point.

> Details about the failure can be located in UpdatePublisher.log. To open the log type %temp%\UpdatePublisher.log

> If in the Updatepublisher.log is mentioned as publish updates failed due to a verification of file signature failed error then ensure that the WSUS Publishers Self signed certificate was copied to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities and Trusted Publishers as mentioned in the “Configuring site server” section in this document.

2. Adsysdis.log shows Client systems are unable to discover through Active directory system discovery.

> This situation could occur if client systems are primarily in another domain. To resolve this in the SCCM Server open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc hosts add an entry for the hostname of the client systems along with its IP Address.

> If clients are still not getting discovered then add domain admin user to Local Users and Groups > Groups >Administrators and Users section. Reboot the server and add the default gateway in the NIC properties for the client systems. Add DNS Server IP address as the SCCM Server ip.

> In SCUP navigate to Dell and the component that has to be expired, right click and select Set Expired status >Expired. After setting the flag publish this update to WSUS. Run synchronization and refresh Dell Updates.

> Note that expiring updates will not instantly remove them. A cleanup scan will run 14 days after making the updates expired and remove them from SCCM. Updates cannot be removed from SCCM if the updates are included in a deployment package. You must first delete the deployment package and then expire the updates.

6. How to perform a cleanup on the client to add and discover it into a new SCCM server domain.

> Uninstall Dell Open manage server inventory Agent from Add/Remove programs.

> Uninstall CCM, open a windows command prompt and change the location to C:\Windows\system32\ccmsetup in which ccmsetup.exe is located. Type ccmsetup.exe /uninstall and then press Enter.

> To verify that client uninstallation has succeeded, examine the log file CCMSetup.log in the folder %windir%\system32\ccmsetup folder on the client computer.

> Remove the client systems from the domain and add it to workgroup.

> After rebooting the server into workgroup, remove domain admin username from Local Groups and Users > Groups >Administrator and users group.

> Reattach the username again into the domain and reboot the server.

> Login to the new domain and add the domain admin user in Local Groups and Users > Groups >Administrator and users group.
