    AUTHOR S PREFACEIN the following pages we submit to our readersa few thoughts about Jesus.On returning from a voyage to the country of

    the Gospels, our heart filled to overflowing withmemories of His earthly life, we cannot resistthe impulse which was born of our admiration,our reverence, and our love, and in this spirit wehave written this little book. At the present daymen speak much about Christ men who knowHim little and men who secretly hate Him. Indeed, we may truly say it is not always in a rightor honourable spirit that they refer to this sacredsubject. Some there are who, not being convincedas to the Divinity of Jesus, extol, if we may sospeak, to excess the splendours of His humanity.God knows we do not wish to question the sincerity of these men, but, on the other hand, thereare some who glorify His humanity only in orderto stifle and smother His Divinity beneath the

We, however, must notignore the beauty of the humanity of Jesus, justbecause other men write falsely about it. InJesus all is admirable and sweet, beautiful andinstructive, reflecting the transcendent glory ofthe Soul from which it emanates.One thing we must ever remember : that theMan was made only to give us the God, that the

    exterior beauty of His human life was only thereflection of His Divine existence ; so that, in aword, He was in His human nature and in Hishuman acts as the nave of the temple whichleads us to the altar of His Godhead.

    THE work which is here presented to the publicis intended to promote the science of the saints astaught by the words and example of our DivineSaviour during His life upon earth. It is a translation of a French work written by the Abbe quot; A. D.Sertillanges after a visit to the Holy Land, andentitled Jesus.The title has been changed in order to signify

    more definitely the nature and character of thebook, and it has been the endeavour of the translator to give the exact teaching of the author, andhis descriptions of localities and of customs, in astyle suitable to the taste of English readers.The subject treated is the most sacred and important which can interest and benefit the piousreader namely, Christ among Men, or charac-eristics of Jesus as seen in the Gospel.In reading the Old Testament we find the

    x PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITIONmajesty and greatness of God presented before us,and our souls are impressed with reverence andthe fear of His Name and of His judgments.Therein we are forcibly reminded of the followingtruths : The Lord is terrible and exceeding great,and His power is admirable (Eccles. xliv. 32) ;* He hath made a decree, and it shall not passaway (Ps. cxlviii. 6) ; Great is the Lord, andgreat is His power : and of His wisdom there isno number (Ps. cxlvi. 5) ; O Lord, our Lord,how admirable is Thy Name in the whole earth,for Thy magnificence is elevated above theheavens (Ps. viii. 2).The New Testament reveals to us the charity

    and tenderness of God, in order that our souls maybe moved to correspond to His grace and toreturn love for love. It is from the Gospel welearn how much God has loved, and how He hasproved that love by becoming man, by living ourlife, and by giving His precious Blood for ourredemption. In the Gospel we are told of thepoverty of Christ, of His work, of His teaching,and of His death upon the Cross, and we aretaught that all this is the effect of Divine love.For God so loved the world as to give His only

    upon it, the better shall we learn the lesson of thelove of God, as that is revealed in its every page,by the words and actions of our Saviour. It contains the history of the Son of God upon earth,and tells us what our souls desire to know : Whatdoes the Son of God wish ? What does He seekupon earth ? Why did He come into this worldin poverty and lowliness ? Why did He pray andpreach ? Why did He work and perform miracles ?Why did He suffer and die for us ? It was because, as the Psalmist says, He hath set Histabernacle in the sun, and He came as a bridegroom (Ps. xviii. 6). His love astonished earthand heaven. He became man through love, andin wonder we can think of God poor through love,despised and neglected for the sake of love ; reduced through love to the extremities of derelictionand cold indifference, signified by His own words :* The foxes have holes, and the birds of the airnests ; but the Son of Man hath not where to layHis head (S. Matt. viii. 20). He came anddwelt among us to give an example of virtue andsanctity, to teach us how to live as the children

Be ye therefore perfect, asyour Heavenly Father is perfect (S. Matt. v. 48).Take up My yoke upon you, and learn of Me,

    because I am meek and humble of heart ; and youshall find rest to your souls (S. Matt. xi. 29).He knew that men could not imitate God asHe is in the throne of His glory, and as revealedin His incommunicable attributes, and thereforeHe would teach us how to imitate Him in humilityand patience, in poverty and suffering, in prayerand communion with Him, in our intercoursewith our fellow-beings, and in our estimate ofnature and of grace of the natural and the supernatural order of things that in our being, bothhere and hereafter, the words and predictions ofS. John may be verified : Dearly beloved, weare now the sons of God: and it hath not yetappeared what we shall be. We know that whenHe shall appear, we shall be like to Him, becausewe shall see Him as He is (i S. John iii. 2).These are some of the reflections and ideas

    as to secure the purposes for which it was written.The first chapter treats of the Person of Jesus, forthe reason which the author assigns : The Personof Jesus explains His works, and His works appearin their true light only when considered in theradiance of His Person ; so that, for all who readthe Gospels this spirit is indispensable to thinkof who He is while contemplating what He does.The subsequent chapters deal with certain partsof Christ s life, and show their characteristics in amanner which can be imitated by His followers inthe corresponding stages of their own lives.We are told how our Lord conducted Himself ateach stage namely, in childhood, in His hiddenlife at Nazareth, in His life of prayer and preaching, in His intercourse with men, both friends andenemies, and in His relation to the whole universe.Each chapter has been written with a view ofplacing before us our Lord s behaviour as recordedin the Gospels under the peculiar circumstancesand surroundings of His life, so that it may appeareasy for Christians of every age, and under their

    THE PERSONALITY OF JESUSTHE Person of Jesus explains His works, and Hisworks appear in their true light only when considered in the radiance of His Person, so that forall who read the Gospels this spirit is indispensable :to think of Who He is, while contemplating whatHe does.*How can we study the true character of Jesus ?By reflecting on His divine and human origin.And from what fountains can we gain a knowledge

    of His origin ? In the first place, from history, ashanded down to us in the Gospels ; then, again,from tradition, and that authority which emanatesfrom Jesus Christ Himself namely, the Church ;

    * Personality is to be understood here and in the Frenchoriginal not as signifying the strictly theological idea ofperson or hypostasis, but as signifying, in a wider and nottheological sense, the sum-total of Christ s human characteristics, and even the whole Christ, true God and true man.

    2 CHRIST AMONG MENand lastly, from the conclusions which, withoutpretending to be infallible, we may draw from thespecial conditions of His birth, and from what ourown faith teaches us about Him.From these three fountains what do we learn ?Jesus is born of a woman. But that Woman

    bears such a title as will not allow her to be confounded with any other woman. She is the IdealWoman, clothed in all beauty, crowned with allgrace. Her privileges are so great, it would seemthat an eternity had spent itself in clothing herwith loveliness.Mary is a virgin, and she must ever remain a

    virgin. In order to accomplish His designs, God,the principle of all paternity even that whichcreatures exercise in His name took upon Himselfto be the direct and only principle of this generation. The earth must bring forth its fruit, andthe Fruit being superior to the power necessaryto its existence, God reserved to Himself the workof begetting it, and He begot it, by His ownpower, in the womb of Mary.And to what purpose this unheard-of cooperation of God Almighty with one of Hiscreatures ? In order to form a body and a soulcomposing together a human nature, which humannature was to be borne by a Divine Person.

    This, in a few words, is the origin of Jesus.Let us now see what follows from this statement.The body of Christ, we say, proceeds from God

    THE PERSONALITY OF JESUS 3and from man from God directly; from manthrough Mary, a virgin, a child of David, a creaturespecially disposed for this honour by God Himself.

    In that it proceeds from God, the Body ofChrist represents perfectly the Creator s idea ofhuman nature. When God works directly andindependently without the co-operation of anycreated cause (which must always be more or lessimperfect, because of its nature, subject to accidentand change) His works are perfect.Why should He seek for imperfection ? It wereunfitting for Him to leave trace of aught thatwould not glorify His wisdom and His power.This is one of the reasons why certainphilosophers declare that all human souls, comingdirectly from God, are all originally equal. Thesoul of a genius and that of the most destituteman, so they say, have not, at the moment oftheir creation, the slightest difference betweenthem. They are both human souls that is all ;similar in kind, they are equal in value and incapabilities. That which makes a differencebetween them, later on, is the organism to whichthey are joined, which organism is subject toaccidents of birth and to hereditary influences;in fact, each possesses the power to form ordeform itself, according to its own acts. This isman s part in the work ; on God s side the work isperfect, without either accident or blemish.But in the case of Christ it is God Himself who

    4 CHRIST AMONG MENacts, not truly entirely by Himself, but principally,and, regarded as coming from Him, the Fruitmust be worthy of such an origin.

    Jesus proceeds, in the second place, from Mary,and, through Mary, from a magnificent line ofancestors.

    If it is true that a family is like a person whois born, grows, develops, and one day attainsthrough one of its members, placed in favourableconditions the position proportionate to itsenergies, what must not Jesus have been in theflesh, through the collaboration of Mary? Thefamily of Mary is that of Abraham, of Isaac, ofJacob the family of David a family royal, yetwild and free, rooted in the bosom of the earth,whence all human energies have their source, andflourishing generation after generation under theblessings of Heaven.We have said that Mary herself was the idealcreature. She was most lovely; we are told so

    by tradition. All who prefigured her in theBible were strong and beautiful women Rebecca,Rachel, Judith, and Esther. In herself she wasthe symbol of all the charms and splendours ofvirginity. The beauty of her soul shone out uponher features, while her frail body was supportedby her supernatural strength. And what was shelike at the time of the Incarnation ?Mary lived in the Temple, which was, as it

    were, the family hearth of her people unhappy

    THE PERSONALITY OF JESUS 5race, who under the weight of calamity, awaitedtheir Messias. The Scriptures tell us that all thedaughters of Juda sighed and longed to be themother of the Messias. Was it not for this reasonthat barrenness was such a sorrow for a Jewishwoman ? Was this not why virginity was sodespised, for it placed a woman outside the possibility of being the Mother of the Promised One ?

    Undoubtedly Mary had great and exalted reasonsfor remaining a virgin. She did not, on thisaccount, love her people less ; more than anyother did she grieve over the sorrows of hernation ; more than any other did she wait andlong for the day of salvation. She called Goddown from Heaven by her ardent desires; shesacrificed herself that He might come ; and surely,when the Divine hour arrived, when the mysterywas accomplished, when an Angel came toannounce to her that she would bring forth theExpected of Nations surely then her inmostbeing was stirred, and the past and the future,the spirit of the Jews and that of the entireuniverse, with their accumulation of hope anddesire, caused her soul to exult, and her heart tothrob in sovereign preparation for her sublimematernity.We represent to ourselves the Body of Christas endowed with all strength and every charma nature robust, yet sensitive, with no shadow ofeffeminacy ; the ideal quintessence of all human

    6 CHRIST AMONG MENperfections, transfigured by their alliance with theGodhead. This is what our piety delights topicture ; it is what our reason dares to declare ;and is it not comforting to find confirmation ofthese thoughts in what we learn from Christiantraditions ? For such is the idea of Jesus thathistory has handed down to us.There was a time when certain men, withoutauthority, dared to speak of the unsightlinessof Christ, as though the two ideas could be compatible. Unsightliness and Jesus Christ Theirstatements were founded if such can be calledreal foundation on those words of Holy Scripture : I am a worm, and no man. They couldnot see that these words merely signified thewilling degradation of Jesus in His bitter Passion.But the true Christian spirit will always rebeland protest against these assertions. We loveto call Him the most beautiful of the childrenof men ; the man par excellence ; the Son of Man,as He called Himself; and grave Doctors andFathers of the Church have not hesitated todescribe Him to us as we may depict Him byjudging of the various traits handed down to usby tradition. We have all read these descriptions, and we must not attach too great importance to their details : it would be foolish to doso ; but many of them are probably correct, andlovingly do we linger over anything that tells ofthe glorification of the Body of our Divine Master.

    graceful, of grave demeanour, His face calm andstrong, His look full of mystery, His soul shiningthrough His eyes. We think of Him with amouth delicate and firm, of an exquisite sensitiveness, but without a touch of weakness all Hisappearance, in a word, worthy of His Divine andhuman origin, worthy of His position amongst us,and capable of teaching our eyes, even as Hiswords teach our hearts, of His power and love.

    Theologians refuse to believe that He eversuffered from human maladies or physical defects.They say that such would take away from Hisdignity, be repugnant to the perfection of HisBody and the wisdom of His designs. Incapableof rashness or of timidity, His perfect organismwas able to resist all the difficulties that surroundand sometimes overcome our weak nature. Hecame on earth to suffer ; but His sufferings werenoble and voluntarily chosen by Him.

    It is probable that His features were of theJewish type. Why should He not inherit thelikeness that by nature He would bear to Hisrace? He was the Universal Man. True; butHe was human, and this universality need notcause Him to renounce His nation that nationwhich He had always loved with a special predilection ; on the contrary, this nature of the East,which impresses its seal so powerfully on everything relating to it, was raised and glorified in

    Let us now enter into the sanctuary of theSoul of Jesus. Many a time have we ponderedover this great and beautiful subject ; but can weever tire of contemplating what was, indeed, theglory of the Sacred Humanity and the source ofthe Salvation of the world ?The Soul of Jesus was created directly by God,

    without the concurrence of any creature. Butthis was no prerogative special to Him ; it is thesame with the soul of every man. Indeed, it is adoctrine little known, perhaps, but neverthelesstrue and sublime that the direct intervention ofGod is absolutely indispensable to the infusion ofevery human soul. Human generation, being thework of the flesh, can reach only to the flesh ;and the soul being spiritual, it is necessary thatGod be there to infuse life and spirit, as a torchis lighted by the touch of a torch.What, then, is there peculiar about the Soul of

    Jesus ? Here the origin is the same as ours. Isthe difference in the substance ? Not exactly.Philosophers tell us that substantially all soulsare equal they have no

    * differentiation thereis nothing to distinguish one from another, apartfrom the special matter or body which theyanimate. Then, as Jesus Christ received fromHis Father a human soul perfectly, truly humanHe was, in this respect, entirely like unto us.

    is only the foundation on which are grafted theblossoms of existence. It is, as it were, thecanvas on which God, man, and Nature work.What was the result of this work in Jesus ? Whatwas His intelligence, His will ? We leave onone side the imagination, the memory, the senses

    all powers which relate equally to the soul andthe body, but which are in proportionate value tothe organism to which they are joined, which,therefore, in Christ must have been perfect.

    But what was His intelligence or intellect like ?God alone knows ; we cannot tell. We hesitateand stammer when we speak of it. And what canwe learn about it from the Scriptures and fromtheology ? They say that, as in Jesus Christthere are two natures, so there must be two intelligences. As God, He had the intelligence ofGod, the knowledge of God ; and here we arereduced to silence. The knowledge of God Itwere folly to try and write about it. All that wecan say is that God is, that He alone exists ofHimself, and in such a manner that all that existsexists by Him, in Him belongs to Him morethan to itself. Consequently, God knows all thingsbecause He knows Himself, as He knows Himself;so that universal knowledge is only, as it were, thelook which He casts eternally upon Himself, asupon the common Source of all being and allactivity.

    TO CHRIST AMONG MENWe may say that this disconcerts us ; but that

    this must necessarily be so is what is declared,not only by theologians and mystics, but by allphilosophers who believe in God. Indeed, themost profound phrase which has, perhaps, everbeen pronounced concerning the knowledge orscience of God was pronounced not by a mystic,nor even by a Christian, but by a man who livedfour centuries before Jesus Christ Aristotlethe phrase of a pagan, which, therefore, maycarry more weight for some than all the terribledeclarations of Saint and Doctor. In God, hesays, substance and intelligence the act of theintellect and the object of the intellect are allone and the same thing. If we could ever understand this, we should have an idea of the Divineknowledge or intelligence of Christ.

    His human knowledge It is infinitely belowHis Divine knowledge ; but it is even morebeyond our power of analysis, if we may dare sayso. Theologians tell us that He received fromHeaven all that was befitting the personal perfection of His human state. He is the PerfectMan; consequently, He has all the intellectualperfection peculiar and suitable to man both as tohis present and his future state.

    Therefore, knowledge properly human, whichis acquired slowly, piece by piece, through companionship with other beings, and through thelabour of the mind, was a treasure which sufficed

    THE PERSONALITY OF JESUS nto render Jesus infinitely superior to the humanrace, on account of the transcendence of His mind,endowed beyond any other. In the second place,He possessed infused knowledge ; that is, theknowledge ordinarily bestowed on souls disengagedfrom matter, and on pure spirits, not on thisearth, through the impression of the senses, butin Heaven, directly from the source of wisdom.To deprive Jesus of this higher knowledge whichwill one day be ours, and which has always belonged to the Angels would be, so say the Doctorsof the Church, to render Him inferior to Hisheavenly subjects. By this infused knowledge,Jesus Christ knows all that it has ever pleasedGod to make known to His creatures, and this ina more sublime degree, that thus the super-eminence of Christ might be established.

    In fine, He possessed that knowledge whichtheologians call the knowledge of the blessed,because it is that knowledge from which proceedthose ecstasies of the spirit which are promised tothe blessed that knowledge which draws soulsinto the vision of God, and which, by an incomprehensible act, makes them contemplate face toface, as it were, with the eyes of God, the InfiniteBeing. This knowledge was the crown of theintellectual edifice of our Divine Master.To contemplate in its source all that was and

    all that *s, all that will be and all that can be ; toplunge the gaze ever forward into the power of

    12 CHRIST AMONG MENGod, and there discover all the riches of existence,all forms of the true, all shades of the beautiful,all degrees of harmony, of life, and existenceunder all its various shapes, in an intoxication ofpirit ever increasing as it penetrates deeper into

    the infinite such was the work of the intelligenceof Jesus.

    * As a cloud pierced by the rays of the sunbecomes all luminous and bright, says Bossuet,so is the soul in the sight of God. And in proportion as the light shines on it so does it becomemore bright, and so becomes, as it were, Divinewhen illuminated by the Divinity.Theologians tell us that this complete human

    knowledge was indispensable to the perfection ofChrist ; and even were it not necessary to Hisperfection, it would be necessary to the fulfilmentof His task as the Saviour of men. Jesus Christis not only the Perfect Man ; He is also theUniversal Man. It was He who undertook thesalvation of the world. It was therefore necessarythat His knowledge should extend over all thekingdoms where His power should be exercised,and that He should be competent in all the detailswhich He must regulate. And here weare confronted by a thought which rises irresistiblyin our minds at the idea of this all-knowledge aconsoling thought indeed, and yet an awe-inspiringone. Jesus Christ knows all all that we are,all our possibilities of misery and malice ; thevalue and worthlessness of this earth, which oncewas trodden by His sacred feet. And knowingall these things, how could Jesus accomplish allHe came on earth to do ? Is there not a depthof mystery in this thought ? Ah some there arewho say, Christ was a wonderful man, an ideal.man, but He was only a man. They will tellyou : * He tried to raise the human race, becauseHe was disappointed at seeing its degradation.He believed in man, and He hoped to raise himout of the mire; but He died, and His deathproved to Him that He was mistaken. He saw the Christianwho would serve Him, but He also saw the unbeliever who would outrage Him, and yet Hisheart was not turned away from man. He sawus all, and He said, quot; Peace be with you. quot; Whoever gazes on this mystery will be overwhelmedby it, and will recover from his amazement todelight more intensely in that ocean of mercy,that folly of pardon, that pity vast and serene asthe realms of space, that bounty that could join

    in the face of poor, weak humanity infiniteknowledge and boundless love.It now remains for us to analyse the TwofoldWill of Christ. We need not dwell long on thissubject, because the will follows the intellect. Thewill is the weight of being drawn towards an objectwhich the intellect finds desirable, and which itemploys all its forces to conquer. Christ was alsoendowed with those admirable secondary faculties which He used in the service of His intellect

    viz., imagination, memory, and the senses ; alsoHe possessed, subject to His will, those energies,powerful, but necessary, called passions.And let not this word passion affright us. Ifhuman misery, alas often gives it a sound ofweakness, passion has, none the less, a noblesense. It means simply the sensible reactionwhich is excited in us by some object of pleasure,or the contrary. In this sense, Jesus Christ hadpassions.-. It must everbe a mystery, so why delay longer here ?God is God, and we are nothingness. Godknows all, and we are ignorant and blind. Godcan do all things, even those things which arebeyond our childish science. And is it not, therefore, fitting that Christ, Who represents to us thehighest step on the ladder of being, should alsorepresent to us a mystery ? The inferior existence

    the mineral is a mystery; and to this firstmystery of matter succeeds the greater mystery oflife as it is found in the vegetable. To this the bruteanimal adds the mystery of sensation ; and man,again, adds the mystery of intelligence. Mysteryupon mystery, even in the purely natural order.In Christ it is the mystery of the Infinite whichfinishes and crowns all the others. So amazingis this mystery of mysteries that we are conqueredby it, and can only prostrate ourselves andmurmur : O God, Thou knowest all things ;Thou canst do all things We have come to the close of our short study.It has no other pretension than to bring beforethe eyes of the reader that which we must knowof Jesus before glancing at His works.     OF all the circumstances in the earthly life ofJesus, the most charming, the tenderest, and thesweetest to the Christian mind are those whichwe recall, with a crowd of happy memories, at thesound of the magic name of Bethlehem.

    All the Master s life can be epitomized in thesefew words : Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Lake, Jerusalem. Nazareth signifies mystery and silence.The Lake signifies work. Jerusalem signifiesconflict and suffering. Thus was His life as onelong day, with its work and its burdens, its silenceand its pain. In the day of Jesus, Bethlehem isthe morning the fragrant freshness of dawn,the first smile of Heaven, the gentle breeze thatexhales new life and gives forth perfumes rich andrare, such as we dream of when contemplatingthe first fair Paradise where man was made.

    Bethlehem What glad rejoicing rings in thatname It awakens echoes of Angels songs, andthe soft fluttering of their wings. When our

    2O CHRIST AMONG MENhearts pronounce that happy word, we hear oncemore in fancy the peals of Christmas bells, andgladly recall our childhood s joys. But, at thesame time, our reason tells us we may here discover many lessons.God s time had come for fulfilling the hopes ofHis people; but He looked not on the great ormighty ones, not on the religious or politicalchiefs of the earth. He chose from a poor,despised village a humble child called Miriam,or Mary.Mary was like those young girls who may be

    seen nowadays at Nazareth, on the road to thefountain, grave and modest of mien, and clothedin the traditional costume of the women of herrace, which consisted of a many-coloured tunic,a white veil, and a girdle round her waist, withone hand holding her pitcher, filled at the well,while with her other hand she drew her veilaround her.

    This was the instrument God chose for theaccomplishment of His designs.And while this child of scarcely fifteen prayedin her humble dwelling beneath the rock, Godsent an ambassador to her from His throne inHeaven, one of those great beings who, in spiteof their superior nature, do not disdain to associate with the human race, for the glory of theirFather and ours. The Angel made known hisrequest, and, Mary s consent being given, the

    After some months the edict of Tiberius cameforth. A census must be taken ; all must set outto their native place to be enrolled. Joseph, thepure spouse of Mary, was of the family of David ;Bethlehem, the city of David, was therefore theplace to which he must go to enrol himself.The hour seemed ill-chosen, for the time wasclose at hand when Mary would give birth to herChild; but the proud Emperor paid no heed tothe inconvenience and pain he caused.Mary and Joseph set out on their journey a

    journey of four or five days. Probably they wereequipped just like the travellers one meets at thepresent day in Palestine. The Virgin was seatedon a donkey ; at her side walked Joseph, with hisstaff and cloak, and carrying a few provisions forthe journey.The way they took was the same as theytravelled over three times a year for the Feaststhe plain of Esdraelon, Naplouse, and Jerusalem.Each evening they halted at the inns, whichwere always open to travellers on entering a villageor town. This was an old-established custom;men and beasts rested there, generally beside astream, and the next morning, having no one tothank for the hospitality but God, they continued

    22 CHRIST AMONG MENtheir journey. Often the pilgrims who crowdedthis route at the times of the festivals sangpsalms and canticles in praise of the Sion towhich they were journeying.

    Perhaps Mary and Joseph felt their hearts weretoo full to imitate them; but if their lips weresilent, they chanted within their souls their gladMagnificat of happiness and love.They arrived at Jerusalem, and walked along

    the walls on the west side, near the fortress ; then,crossing the plain and the hills, which echo to-daywith the cries of Rachel s sorrow, in a few hoursthey reached the little city of David. Let uspause for a moment and describe this countrywhere Bethlehem rises in the midst of baremountains, like a flower springing out of the rocks.

    Outside Jerusalem that city of whitenessbesieged by the desert on the east, and boundedby the Cedron and the terrible GehennaBethlehem stands on a hill. It is like an amphitheatre, surmounting a deep valley which is trulya land of plenty. Thus was it called Ephrata,the fruitful, cultivated by the industrious inhabitants in the form of long terraces coveredwith fig-trees and clinging vines, which tracedbeautiful designs on the white soil.

    Bethlehem was the much-loved dwelling ofSolomon. He it was who first made the gardenswhich spread out at the foot of the town, in thelittle valley of Ortas. Above, near the road to

    Tin-: CRADLE OF JESUS 23Hebron, he built vast reservoirs, which still exist.They were filled from a hidden spring in a subterranean grotto, which was called the SealedFountain, and the valley below was known as theClosed Garden, signifying the names given bySolomon to his spouse in the Canticle. These

    reservoirs, just mentioned, supplied water, bymeans of pipes, to the dwellings in the HolyCity, so that the life of Jerusalem may be said tohave sprung from thence, even as the Life of theWorld came forth from Bethlehem.And Bethlehem of to-day has its charms. When ,

    having climbed the little hill, one stands in thepicturesque public place which is the centre oflife in Bethlehem, facing one is the sacred grotto,over which now stands the most ancient basilicain the world. Then, glancing over the whitetombs of the cemetery, which serves as a borderon the crest of the hills, one sees below the fertile,terraced gardens leading down into the Valley ofthe Caroubiers.A little beyond, resting on the mountain, risesthe village of Beit-Sahour, whence came the shepherds, and the country of Booz, in whose fieldsRuth the Moabite was wont to glean. To theright of the horizon lies the Dead Sea ; to the leftrises Jerusalem, the city of blood. Memoriessweet and sad are roused within us as we see inthe market-place, among the rows of camelsbending under their loads, young maidens with

    24 CHRIST AMONG MENlong white veils sisters of the Virgin and graceful children in many-coloured dresses, towardswhom our hearts go out with a feeling of tenderness, whilst thinking of their brothers the HolyInnocents and of their other Brother, Jesus.Thus is the soul filled with many conflictingthoughts of joy and sorrow. Strange feelingsoverwhelm us, and many pictures pass throughour minds, some sad and others happy ; and stillin the centre of all lies the crib, the cradle ofJesus, which prefigures so much pain, and out ofwhich must rise the Cross.

    But let us rest here till the shades of eveningfall, and our impressions will be still morewonderful. For to us Bethlehem is night ; itgained its value to us at midnight ; it is thesilence of the world ; it is Nature quiet and atrest ; it is the beautiful hill rising under themagic starlight, to draw from Heaven its well-beloved. And when face to face with the realitywith which we delight to outline our dreamssitting among those tombs, so white that theyrecall to us the tears that Jesus shed there, andthus their very sadness is charmed away we seethe shadows fall, then rise by degrees and hoverabove us, till noiselessly each star shines through,while beneath us the bleating of the flocks risesin the soft warm air, and seems like a cry fromthe plain, a sigh of the night. We feel our heartsthrob with gladness, and, turning to the little cave,

The present exists for us nolonger, and in our happy dreams we hear sweetvoices of the past, which, while uttering nothing,tell us so much. Pausing here, we will watchthe Holy Group arrive, weary and footsore aftertheir tedious journey, but calm and happy withal.

    It is towards evening that Mary and Josephreach their journey s end. They have been preceded by several of their compatriots, travellersfrom all parts of Judea ; and, consequently, asBethlehem is a small town, there is no room leftfor them in the inn. We know how beautifullythe Fathers of the Church apply this fact to us.They tell us the crowded inn is like the humanheart. There is room for many things, manypeople, many interests. Like the Oriental shelters,always open to the passers-by, we ever welcomewhat comes with an attractive and pleasingappearance. The crowd rush in ; they overwhelm,they absorb us. A crowd of thoughts, of desires,of earthly plans, of business, of passions all findroom. And when Jesus comes, He comes too late.Sometimes we fear to entertain such a Guest.He is exacting and troublesome, is Jesus Christ When He comes He wants His abode to be clean,honourable, undisputed. How can He lodgebeside some of the guests we have admitted ?And so we say to Him, Go hence Oh no

    26 CHRIST AMONG MENwe do not say so with our lips, it is true ; but ourhearts are more eloquent than our tongues, andour hearts say plainly to Him, * Go hence Thereis no room for you. Leave us in peace. BegoneAnd Jesus goes away, and we remain with ourmiseries, like the inn at Bethlehem, that mighthave sheltered the Infinite, but would not.

    Behold Mary and Joseph without lodging,wandering through the streets of Bethlehem,harassed by the dangers of the night, and overshadowed by the dread hour that was approaching We may guess the anxiety of Joseph, his eagerness, and his trouble. This is all so hard, sounexpected. As for Mary, when we recall thetouching preparations that mothers make for thebirth of their first-born, we may imagine hersorrow. And yet her great tranquillity was notdisturbed by the faintest shadow of doubt oruneasiness. She bore within her the Director ofall things, He Who knows all, Who can do all.To be uneasy with regard to Him would befoolish. As to herself, what could anythingmatter? Had she not all things in having herTreasure? When she thought of the supremehonour that had been conferred on her, could sheenvy rich and luxurious mothers ? To suffer withJesus within her was a double joy. It was tobegin the work of expiation, the work of theSaviour. It was to carry the Cross in carryingHim who was to be nailed to it. The Mother of

    THE CRADLE OF JESUS 27Sorrows began there her heavy duty, and we canimagine with what an immensity of tendernessshe did so, when we recall to what an extentMary was associated in this great work, and consequently how fully she partook in the universaljoy it brought to men.

    Mary went on and on through the narrowstreets of Bethlehem, without fear, withoutanxiety. She was awaiting the will of God, andGod poured into her soul, drop by drop, Hisserenity and peace serenity greater and deeperthan that of the still, dark night that rose nowfrom the plains, and closed slowly over thebeautiful hill-tops.What ineffable exchanges were being accomplished Mary giving Jesus His blood, His life,the beatings of His heart ; Jesus giving Marylight, strength, love, patience, and that peace thatcomes to those who possess God. Thus, conducted by her spouse, led on more surely byProvidence, sitting on the poor weary beast whosehoofs sounded on the stone pathway, as a cryscorned and unheeded, Mary went on her waysilently, hiding Heaven under her downcast eyelids, and shielding with her white veil her heart,which contained her God.

    Anxiously, patiently, diligently Joseph soughtfor shelter, and found none.At length, travel - stained and weary, havingabandoned all hope of hospitality from men, he

    28 CHRIST AMONG MENremembered other shelters which were not closedagainst the poor. Under the hill near the Towerof David were a number of grottos, such as maybe seen in all parts of Palestine, but especially inJudea. Here the shepherds sheltered their sheep,but at this time of the year, as the flocks were atthe pastures on the hill-side, the caves were empty.Joseph, remembering this, directed his stepstowards them.

    It was Providence that was directing their feet,for it was ordained that the Son of God shouldfind shelter where He would not be the Guest ofany but God. Like an ever - watchful mother,Providence has a retreat and shelter for all wholive ; She hollows the caves in the midst of theforests, and forgets not the son of the lioness.When in the beginning She presided over theevolution of matter, and when Her workman, fire,solidified the shapeless globe, She reserved thisgrotto, this little cave of Bethlehem, in anticipationof the hour of God s coming.

    It was not fitting that Divine Immensity shouldbe enclosed in the dwelling of man ; that He, therich Sovereign, Who rules the sun and commandsthe dawn to break, He Who brightens the darkness with stars, arid throws over the night a mantlemore gorgeous than that of kings, should beborn in the midst of vain riches and perishablegrandeurs. He overcame all earthly pomp inscorning it. Of His own choice He showed Him-

Flower of the world, but not flower of thesoil, He would bloom and grow in the midst ofHis own creation, choosing for His place of birtha cave which had had no other architect ordecorator but God His Father, to Whom He wasequal in all things.And was it not meet that He Who became manfor all should from the hour of His birth beaccessible to all, especially those who most resembled Him the poor, the little ones, the scornedof men, but beloved of God ?

    See the shepherds come from the borders ofthe desert of Judea, their heads covered with adark veil, a sheepskin thrown over their shoulders,and clothed in a simple rough tunic, holding astaff with which to guide the straying sheep.These are the men whose Guest Jesus chose to be.They are of no importance in the eyes of men.In the East, more than anywhere else, they areservants of the servants themselves, having nohome but the caves and rocks, even like HimWhom they welcome to earth. It is to them thatJesus offers Himself.They are in the plain guarding their flocks or

    gathered round their fires, and silently Jesusinvites them. Immediately they obey, withoutdoubt, without fear. Be they now shepherds or

    30 CHRIST AMONG MENkings, their rights are equal ; they both can gazeon, love, adore, and, if they dare, may even holdin their arms the Son of God, for they are simpleand clean of heart.Thus Heaven urges the weary travellers to

    enter the cave. There is no earthly temple hereto enclose the Real Presence ; but Nature offersher temple to welcome her God. The dome isformed of rugged rocks. The altar is a crib.Mary and Joseph enter, and the hour for whichHeaven awaits approaches. The poor lodgingwhich Joseph endeavours to make more fittingoffers its lowly resources to the hidden God. Andthe holy spouse, humble and filled with awe,retires into his own nothingness in the vision ofthe Infinite about to come on earth.Bethlehem slumbers ; Nature is still. The

    stars look down and softly twinkle. The Angels,happy and expectant, with hymns of joy upontheir lips, await their Master s signal to breakforth in songs of jubilee.

    All is ready. The mystery may now be accomplished.

    CHAPTER IIITHE HIDDEN LIFE OF JESUSWHOEVER seeks to penetrate the life of Jesuswill there discover, even in the midst of theagitation and turmoil of His active life, retreatsfull of silence, where His interior life reposes intranquil radiance, and of which His public life isbut the veil. For that which characterizes Histhirty years of obscure, and apparently useless,existence is that its very hiddenness is alone allthat is visible to us.Upon Nazareth the Gospel is dumb; at Nazareth

    all is mystery and silence. As Moses in the cloud,conversing alone with God, so was Jesus in Hishidden life. And perhaps it is bold of us to tryand penetrate that cloud.

    At the time of Christ, Nazareth was a littlehamlet, lost in the mountains of Galilee thatGalilee which was despised by the priests andgreat ones of Israel. Can any good come out ofNazareth ? say they.And, indeed, it was a place of little importance.

    32 CHRIST AMONG MENThree or four thousand souls, a synagogue, towhich, perhaps, was attached a small school, andthat was all. Neither commerce, nor garrison ofRoman soldiers, none of those large houses thatgained a reputation of gaiety, and, one must alsosay of corruption, as in Tiberias and Magdala.Even less could Nazareth pretend to possess oneof those famous schools, which in some placeswere built in the shadow of the Temple, and whichwere the pride and glory of a Jewish city.

    Situated twenty-five leagues from Jerusalem,nine hours journey from Capharnaum, far fromthe frequented way, Nazareth was little knownand seldom noticed. She was like the rose spokenof by S. Jerome, that opens her chalice only forHeaven.To-day the pilgrim who comes from Jerusalem

    will find the little white village hidden, like adove s nest, among the summits of the hills whichrise above the Plain of Jesrael. When, on theother hand, one approaches it from the north,coming from Galilee, it appears in a hollow, forit lies hidden in one of those upper valleys whichare so common among the pasture hills of Palestine.When one arrives there, with the spirit animatedby memories, and the soul filled with the personality of Jesus and His hidden life, which is butsuggested to us in the few words in the Gospel ;when one considers what He was and what Heis, the terrible mysteries locked up in His soul,

    See this village, these houses, with their flatroofs, like blocks of white stones on the greenslope; the narrow street hollowed out of themountain, on either side of which flourish all thelife in the little city this is Nazareth Herewas passed the Hidden Life thirty years of thatlife of which each moment could have saved aworld. O God how small are Thy immensities And the spirit, for a moment stunned, feelssuddenly within it a delight at these happymemories, these familiar images.What was it there that Jesus lived ? therethat the Treasure of the world reposed ? Anddid He pass thirty years, hidden from men, evenas is this little village lost among the mountains,humble among the humble, exposed to rebuffs, tocommon surroundings, and gaining His livelihoodby the labour of His hands ? Yes, my God yes

    Jesus Christ did not come into this world forHimself: He came for our sakes to suffer andhumble Himself for us, to be degraded and diefor us that was His intention in coming. Ourwealth and greatness, our position and our advantages what are they in His sight ? Poor littleflies that strut about, and despise other fliesbecause their wings are a little less bright, ortheir feet a little less dainty what are you worth ?Great or small, in God s eyes your value dependsonly on how far you correspond to the gracessuitable to your condition, and truly to Him themost humble is the most worthy of honour. Thusdoes He signify His indifference to worldly pomp.Ignoring the nothingness of our glories, He showsforth His own glory.

    Looking at Nazareth, how can vain thoughtsarise within us ? The human condition of theSaviour here shines forth with a Divine brilliancy.And this poverty, willingly chosen, draws in itstrain eternal riches ; this annihilation is the pavingto that glorious home of the Infinite beyond thestars.

It is a cavern hollowed out of therock, with a stone structure joined to the entrance.To-day it is a chapel, and devout souls can prayin the dim vault, and priests can call God downto earth, renewing, after two thousand years, theReal Presence.Ah what a flood of thoughts rushes in on us The past rises up before us ; the rough walls speak

    to us, while Heaven seems to bow down, in verylove, to shelter and hide this sacred spot. Theylived here They loved thy shade, O rock They led here, peacefully, the life of those peasantsso often seen in the villages of the East, hidden intheir humble homes, far from our civilization,ignorant of our schemes and our problems, butnear Nature and near God.Mary was here. She went twice each day tothat fountain, the very same where the maidensnow go to draw water, wading in the clear pool.With bare feet, she modestly advanced with hercompanions, carrying her pitcher, and waiting herturn, which perhaps was long in coming. Then,filling her pitcher, she returned carrying it on hershoulder. She did her simple household workwith the Infinite in her heart. She lighted thefire in a hole in the rock, and cooked their frugalfood food for the Lord of the Universe She

Your granddresses, your jewels, your luxury and civilization,your ignorant and arrogant science do youfancy that these things make any impression onGod ? And your dreams of wealth and greatnesswhat are they to Him, Who is the Lord of allthings ?

    Perhaps, O worldling you would have chosenas Mother of God a distinguished person, insteadof a barefooted virgin ? You would have selectedfor His home a palace, instead of a grotto in therock ? The Creator of Heaven saw no shame inthis. It was all equally great in the eyes of Himbefore Whom all is so small ; and since His heartdesired to stoop to His creatures, it was a joy toHim to stoop as low as was possible to InfiniteLove.How can we describe those thirty years passedin the obscurity of Nazareth ?They were a preparation. Jesus Christ did not

    need any preparation for Himself. The greatproblem of vocation, so difficult to others, andmore or less slowly solved, was anticipated in Hiscase. From the first moment, conscious of Him-

HisDivine authority must have, for visible support,His human authority. Therefore He waitedpatiently while, in man s time, His body according to the flesh was being developed.Must we understand from this that those thirty

    years were devoid of any result with regard toHis Divine work ? No ; we must guard ourselvesemphatically from thinking this.

    Jesus Christ came into this world to give Himself, to speak a word, to show an example, and todie. His death will come. It is not yet time topreach His word ; but there remains the giving ofHimself and the showing of an example theexample of humility, of patience, of submission toGod and to those who represented Him on earth ;And the gift of Himself to whom ? To His Father,in the first place. And we must notice that thisact is truly the * vocation of Christ. Is He not,through His atoning death, the ransom for sin ?Is He not the price of the guilty and the intercession of the just? And that Voice that cries,Behold, I come to do Thy will, O my God is

    it not the expression of all redemption and allthe priesthood in Christ, and, consequently, of allHis work on earth ?The rest is a surplus a wonderful surplus of

    love, of condescension, of justice; but in this

John the Baptist said to those who came toquestion him : I am the voice of one crying inthe wilderness. Jesus Christ is the Voice whichcalls to God. And all that He is, and all that Hecan do all His thoughts, His feelings, His aspirations, His joys and His pains; all the breath ofHis lips and the beatings of His heart all cry outto God ; all supplicate, petition, intercede, makereparation ; all, coming from a Divine Person,possess a Divine value, and the world is saved,because Jesus the Saviour lived and died.And thus in giving Himself to God Jesus Christgave Himself to men. In the quiet Temple ofGalilee, in this humble home, where the atmosphere was silence and speech was used only forthe praise and service of God, Jesus gave to theworld His Real Presence. Like the winter s sun,radiant and tranquil, rising on a world frost-bound and dead, giving no heat, not causing theearth to fructify, but seeming to come only tobrighten and rejoice the heart so was Jesus.When we visit these places where Jesus livedthey are sanctuaries. The hills are the altars ;the trees, the flowers, the rocks, the light cloudsare a sublime decoration for this shrine, whereHeaven stooped to dwell. There is between theseobjects and those entirely profane all the difference

    It is the golden candlestick which held the Lightthat enlightens the world. It is the rock whenceflows the Living Water which floods and purifiesthe earth.What did Jesus do at Nazareth ?The Gospel answers us : He advanced inwisdom and age, and grace with God and men.And later it adds another word : * He was subject

    to them.It cannot be expressed with a more sublime

    simplicity that Jesus did not distinguish Himselfvisibly at Nazareth from those around Him. Hewilled that His deeds should resemble ours, inorder that our merits might be like unto His. Asa child He played with those who later werecalled the * brethren of Jesus that is, Hiscousins and other children of the village. Doubtless the little ones played as we see them playto-day for the East changes little in its customs

    at marriage-feasts and funerals, or at fashioning little birds of clay, a favourite game of theOriental child. These childish games form partof that picture of the glory, full of grace, ofwhich S. John speaks in the beginning of hisGospel.

    the perfection of His life, but so similar to othersthat even His relations knew not Who He was.This was proved later by their opposition andtheir murmurs. The glory of the midnight houraround His Divine cradle had been so secret inits grandeur that none guessed Who had come.A veil of silence enshrouded the Well-beloved.Faith alone, in the twilight of sweet memories,taught Mary and Joseph the truth about Mary sChild. Doubtless they prayed together. Likeall the Jews, they prayed for the redemption ofIsrael. Who can fathom the sentiments of pietyin that holy group ? What union of hearts What looks of timid, rapturous adoration fromMary and Joseph What loving abandonmenton the part of Jesus He was silent about Himself, and they understood the silence. Ah thosehappy hours were Divine, and they wished theymight never end. But His life when He mustact was waiting, and day followed day in rapidprocession, each passed in prayer, in study, andin labour.Study Strange word to apply to Jesus Andyet we must remember that we have said that

    Jesus, while being truly God, was really man, andhad in consequence an intellect capable of progress, in the sense that knowledge depends onexperience and on the spontaneous labour of the

    In some sense, He learnt nothing from man.He loved to read the Scriptures, where He foundHis Father s name, and His human knowledgeincreased ; but in reality all knowledge came fromHimself.From the age of five all Jewish boys began to

    learn verses from the Bible. At ten they weretaught the rabbinical traditions, written laterunder the title of Mishna.On Sabbath-days and feast-days, during thelong leisure hours passed in their homes, the Jewsoccupied themselves thus. In a number of townsthere was a small school attached to the synagogue. Each master had charge of not more thantwenty-five children, whom he instructed, chieflyby asking and answering questions, as did theDivine Master Himself in His public life. Hetaught them to read from the rolls of parchmenton which the law was written, and to write withthe calam in the beautiful characters of HolyWrit passages of the Bible that it was judgedgood for them to know, such as the history of theCreation, the Canticles of the Feasts, and theLaw of Moses. Finally, this course of educationwas completed by practical lessons on the manner

    a sort of study in politeness and in the customsin vogue among the Jews.Thus did Jesus pass the first twelve years ofHis human life. Having arrived at that age, anew career opened itself before Him, becausethat was the age appointed for entry in the sociallife among the Jews. He was then admittedto the honour of worshipping in the Temple,and He went for the first time to Jerusalem.Jerusalem We may easily guess the emotionwhich vibrated through the soul of Jesus whenpassing through its gates and entering its Templefor the first time.

    This was that famous edifice where, amidstthe confused clamour of idolatry, His praiseshad resounded for centuries. Here were offeredthose sacrifices flowing with the blood of theirvictims, arid accompanied by prayer and incensewhich were the figures of His own great

    Sacrifice ; and His heart was stirred to its infinitedepths that heart so tender and sensitive, soready to embrace all that touched His Father shonour.

    , When the Levites and their sons intoned thePsalms (after the great libation of the Passover),it was, so say historians, like one great voice ofthunder, which shook the very foundations of theTemple, and echoed even to the valley of theCedron. Jesus must have mingled His voice with

Jesus in themidst of the Doctors is a foreshadowing ; Histeaching is an earnest of that wisdom whichlater He will show to men. The bold words ofMary, * Son, why hast Thou done so to us ?are a commentary on those other words of theEvangelist, He was subject to them. And, again,the Saviour s response, Did you not know that Imust be about My Father s business ? was thesumming up of His whole life. Thus in this oneincident do we see Him entirely His life andwork, as it were, epitomized in one bright flashof light, the essence of the ligjit invisible. ButHis hour had not yet come. The Star returnedto the shadows of the night until it was to arisein all its brilliancy and illumine the world.

    Let us return with the Holy Family to Nazareth,and there contemplate a new \vonder Jesusworking for His amp;gt;read. From the days of Hisinfancy to the days of His public life Jesusworked. He had need to work, for Joseph s wasa poor house. This was another burden He tookupon Himself as the Son of Man.An Israelite who did not learn a trade wasdespised. * It is as if he were taught robbery,said the Rabbi. All worked with their hands,

Hillel was an engraver on wood ; Shammai was a carpenter.Some even did not consider it beneath them towork as shoemakers, tailors, smiths, or potters.The practical and laborious spirit was ever acharacteristic of the Jewish nation. Even to-dayin the Eastern cities the contrast between theactivity of the Jew and the resigned indolence ofthe fatalist Mussulman is remarkable.

    Then, again, in the labour of Jesus there was aspecial significance, as the calling of Him Whocame, not to be ministered unto, but to minister,and Who would, at one and the same time, obeythe law and sweeten labour, thus showing us adouble example.Work is a virtue, and it also sows the seedsof virtue, for it alienates the suggestions ofevil, inasmuch as it uses our energies, both ofbody and of mind ; it brings us in closer intercourse with our fellow-creatures ; it does morefor the great social question than do thoseempty strings of phrases in which rich and idlemen lament the unhappiness of the present day,while they do not perceive that they are themselves a social wound, an object of envy andscandal to their brethren, a dead spot in thegreat living organism, an obstacle in the race ofhuman life.Thanks be to God, these men are not the

    greater portion of the human race. Work is the

    of man. It is for this reasonthat Jesus, Who came to teach all, gave the worldthis striking example. Christ was a working manduring the greater portion of His life. And whatkind of work did Jesus do ? Tradition is unanimous in telling us He worked as a carpenter.We can picture Him at work, as we look at thelittle joiners shops in the narrow streets of theArab quarter at Nazareth, mere grottos formedby the hollows in the rocks. They worked on thebare ground, half in shadow, half in the light,with arms and legs bare ; sometimes makingyokes for the oxen or ploughs for the fields, holding the wood in place with their foot, or sometimesneatly fashioning little rails and frames with thatprimitive tool they called the drill-bow, underwhich the slender splinters curled and shone likesheaves of pale gold touched and coloured by thesun. We are told that Jesus worked thus, onlyHe was more grave, more modest, more silentthan His companions ; for was not His work ofgreater value than theirs ?The contrast between these humble labours andHim Who deigned to perform them was so stupendous as to cause His work to become a solemnand religious ceremony. We are awed in spite ofourselves, and are hushed in contemplation of thissilent work, and in wonder at the motives whichdirected this humble labour. We forget ourselvesas we pause and gaze upon the Divine Workman

We watch His hands, and then welook up and see His eyes, and there His soulbeams forth with a tranquil radiance, and the littleshop and Nazareth and all the world is floodedwith a glorious, celestial light.We are raised and crushed and utterly overcomewith a delightful sense of peace as these thoughtscome over us, even as a little fly faints and diesin the heat of a flame.The labour of Jesus was not incessant, not

    always heavy; we can conclude this from thecharacter of His people and of the time in whichHe lived on earth. It would be incorrect topicture in a shop in the East the feverish excitement which prevails in our own countries. Thisdifference is in great measure due to the differencein climate ; and also our energies are exerted totheir full extent in an almost frenzied manner tomeet our requirements, real or imaginary ; but itis not so in the East. Even to-day the Orientalsare, above all, tranquil and leisurely. There is,undoubtedly, much labour done, but it is donesimply and without haste.On the Sabbath and feast days all work wassuspended. What did Jesus do then ? We havealready said He prayed, He read the Scriptures,and He meditated on them. He went on to theflat roof of His little home, or on to some neighbouring height and prayed. How often, perhaps,

To the east, the Seaof Galilee, partially veiled by the intervening hills,the future theatre of so many Divine manifestations. To the south, Gilboa, the hills of Endor,of Jezrahel, and, further still, the mountains ofEbal and Gerizim reminded Him, with the Plainof Esdraelon, of the wars and great deeds of Hisancestors. Close to Him, Thabor offered Him athrone for His glory, and at His feet lay the whitetombs of Carmel.We may imagine what passed through the mindof the Master ; and when at evening, the horizonshrinking in the gloom of coming night, He sawaround Him the winnowers with their woodenbuckets casting the grain on the summer wind,the labourers returning from their work, flocks ofsheep rising like white clouds of dust, and thewatchmen taking up their posts of guard; whenthe sweet scent of the almond and the lemon-tree was wafted to Him on the gentle breezeoh, then, how sublime must have been Hisreverie

    His imagination was flooded with those beautiful pictures which His parables have bequeathedto the world. And in all Nature charming, rest-

    48 CHRIST AMONG MENless, and at rest Jesus read the Name of HisFather, discovering in all creation the sublimesymbols which veil, yet show forth, His beautyand His truth.

    Later on, as the time drew near for Jesus tomanifest Himself to the world, He retired moreclosely into His solitude. He gave Himself forthe world, but His wisdom fixed the limit and thetime. He showed Himself, acted, spoke, cured,consoled, exhorted, was all things to all men ; butwhen His work was done once more, His interiorlife recalled Him, and He retired alone. Hewent into the mountains alone is told again andagain in the Gospel. For days, and sometimesfor many days, at a time He was sought andcould not be found; the desert or the mountainwere His safe retreat. Behold Him there, in ashady nook beneath the spreading trees, or in alonely grotto open to the sky, His soul wrapt inecstatic union with God.His soul carried always with it a great solitude,even in the midst of work and tumult ; but attimes He sought visible recollection for our edification and instruction, and as an example to Hisdisciples.We must learn to be recollected even as Hewas. Whatever be our solicitudes, we must lead

    within us an interior life, where the distractionsand cares of business cannot enter, or at leastcannot penetrate to the injury of the soul. We

Our labourswhat are they in themselves ? The toil of ourhands, the work of our brains, what are they toGod ? For this is all that counts. And if we orothers reap the fruit of our endeavours, what arethese fruits worth if they do not lead to lifeeternal ? When we and they have passed awayand the balance of life is closed, what will remain ?Only God and our value in His sight.We must, then, love and nourish the soul ; and,to this end, we must seek recollection and solitude. Solitude calls God to us; it opens theheart to higher thoughts, and casts us into thosedepths within ourselves whence our manly resolutions spring forth, and where our best impulsesarise.

    Again, the hidden life is a great example.Thirty years, . . . Three years. Three yearsof action ; thirty years of silence, of labour, ofobscurity, of obedience. The obedience of Godto those He placed over Him, to the circumstances directed by His hand; the detachmentof Himself from the world that is to say,evil and false maxims, false glory, false lovethese were the glories of Christ, and they mustbe ours.Our life is not usually a life of incessant public

    display ; it is in great measure a hidden life. To4

    CHAPTER IVTHE PREACHING OF JESUS

    NAZARETH, we have seen, was a preparation ;that is to say, the great work of redemption wasstill to be accomplished ; but the time now drewnear when Jesus, who came to restore humanity,would work visibly for the realization of thisgreat design. He must first rouse the truth lyingdormant in the souls of men, then teach them ;first conquer the empire of sin, then exhort andlead aright ; draw men to God with the chainsof love, then reveal that same love to men, inorder to make them know their Heavenly Fatherand inspire them with confidence in His goodness.The public life of Jesus had this threefold end.And that is why one day the little cottage ofJoseph was deserted, and the Son of Man showedHimself to the world.The Gospels tell us how Jesus began His public

    life. He went to the bank of the Jordan to bebaptized by John. He, who instituted Baptism,would be the first to give the example in the New

    52 CHRIST AMONG MENLaw. He desired to sanctify by His touch thosewaters which were to serve for the regenerationof His children. He elected to cleanse in Hispure flesh the defiled and sinful flesh of the sonsof Adam.

    Jesus went forth from Nazareth, turning to theeast, and descended to the bottom of that greatvalley where the Jordan rushes down from thenorth, and where, as in a sepulchre, 400 feetbelow the Mediterranean, lies the Dead Sea.There He received the testimony of John and thetestimony of the Eternal Father. He descendedinto the waters of that river which, traversing thegreater part of Palestine, created life as it flowed,even as He Himself created the life of the world.After His Baptism, Jesus once more climbed thesolitary heights which surround Jericho, desiringto remain alone for forty days, thus entering Hisactive life by the avenue of silence.The solitudes chosen by Jesus were those inwhich the prophets of Israel used to fortify theirsouls, where the Precursor, weakened by fasts andvisited by visions of the Messias, rested, andpassed the nights in prayer, after having spentthe day in baptizing and instructing. Jesusretired there in order that He might draw Himself into closer contact with His Father beforecommencing His great work. There He fasted,and subjected Himself to the assaults of theenemy, who did all in his power to thwart our

    THE PREACHING OF JESUS 53Divine Master in the task He had undertaken.And, gazing into the future, He embraced withHis all-seeing eyes the work He was about to do.Like the sun, mentioned in the Psalm, penetrating the earth, He rejoiced as a giant to runthe way, longing to reveal His Soul, rich with theriches of the Infinite, and to pour His graces intothe souls of men.

    Again, after forty days, He returned to thebanks of the Jordan, and, mingling with themultitudes who came from all parts to hear thepreaching of John, He preached His word.Three questions rise in our minds in connexionwith the preaching of Jesus :

    1. Where did Jesus preach ?2. In what manner did He preach ?3. What were the chief characteristics of His

    preaching ?

    In the first place, the theatre of the apos-tolate of Jesus was the country bordered on thenorth by Lebanon, on the east by the mountainsof Moab and Galaad, on the south by the DeadSea and the Desert, and on the west by theOcean. It was a country of about the same sizeas Switzerland. According to S. Jerome, it wassixty leagues in length, scarcely twenty leagues inbreadth. So small was it, indeed, that this greatdoctor feared to describe it, lest, he said, heshould lay himself open to the blasphemous

Truly there is something strange, even confounding, in the thoughtthat such an immensity as was the life of Jesuswas confined in so small a space.Two days journey, and we can travel from endto end the country where Jesus lived ; yet it is ofHim that it is written : * Thou art My Servant,to raise up the tribes of Juda, and to gather thelost ones of Israel ; I have established Thee tobe the Light of nations, and to carry My Name tothe ends of the earth.What a contrast between the immensity of thistask and the apparent narrowness of the scope inwhich to accomplish it When we are told thatthe brethren of Jesus, marvelling at His works,said to Him, * If Thou canst do these things,show Thyself to the world, we are tempted tosay they were justified in speaking thus. Howwas it that Jesus, * the Universal Man, couldconsent to confine His whole life to this one smallplace one little portion of the universe.And yet it appears to us that in this circumstance, instead of a scandal, we can discover oneof the most Divine traits, if we may dare to sayso, in the Master s conduct. God delighted inthis prodigy, which consisted in causing immensity to bud forth from obscurity the greattree from the tiny grain. He created all thingsout of nothing, in order that nothingness mightbear testimony to His power ; and as He created

That was why Helived without anxiety and died without fear.Men grow anxious because they are not themasters of time ; they wish to accomplish everything themselves, because they are not the mastersof others, and they cannot rely on others completing their work in their way. Jesus Christ isthe Master of man and time. His earthly lifewas only a flash of light, His native land a smallplace on the universe ; but from this little placethis flash of brightness shone forth and illuminatedthe entire earth.

    In fact, may we not confine the theatre of thepreaching of Jesus to a still smaller space, andsay that the true birthplace of the Gospel wasGalilee, and the lake known as the Sea of Galilee

    places more dear to a Christian soul than evenJerusalem itself, and to which we always turn asto our native land ?When the pilgrim approaches Galilee after theweary journey through the desert, it seems liketurning back the pages of history each step hetakes is a step back into the twenty centuries thatare past, till at last he feels he is living in the daysof Jesus.     In those days about a dozen small townssurrounded the little sea. How often He passedfrom one to another, crossing the waters whichwere sometimes smooth and tranquil, at othertimes agitated by storms to go to Capharnaum,known as His town, or to Bethsaida, Chorazain,and Magdala, wherever He would save a soul orpreach His doctrine.To-day silence reigns over these waters.

    Desolation is spread as a cloak over the land, andit is as though no profane reality dare interruptthe dream the living presence of a Man-God.Hardly a trace of life : a boat, a few fishermenmending their nets, as in the days of Andrew andSimon Peter ; a gipsy tent, and, shrouding all, amelancholy calm. All seem to be but phantoms,living symbols, whose only excuse for being thereis to give colour to a dream.How can our feelings be earthly and commonplace when treading these hallowed spots ?
