• The electronic industry and in particular the users related to the semi-conductor industry were the original target for the EX510 system.

Background

• In addition the EX510 series was also developed to expand sales of SMC’s other serial interface systems, in particular series EX500.

• When EX510 was first released it was only compatible with network protocols that are popular in Japan, such as CC-Link & DeviceNet.• But to expand sales in overseas markets the network

compatibility has been increased to include PROFIBUS-DP, which is especially popular in Europe.

• It is only necessary to set the address for the gateway unit and not the individual I/O units• Therefore to change protocols, only the gateway unit

needs changing, not all the slave units

• It is only necessary to connect the power supply to the gateway unit• This results in wire savings as there is no separate

power supply cable for the input & output units

• Nearly every application and automatic machine where the control structure has a certain degree of complexity is a good opportunity to use field buses.

• With the new EX510, SMC’s product range in terms of serial interfaces is now broader and can cover more possible applications with more optimised solutions. For instance, EX510 is:

• more suitable for applications that don’t require IP65 enclosure protection

• more suitable for mounting in a cabinet due to its compact dimensions

• an entry level field bus system that can also be cheaper due its lower enclosure protection
