Did You Know. . . .We’ve decided to add a new feature to this year’s Monthly Bulletins- called Did You Know. . . . The JCC is responsible for a host of social service programs from Beacon After Schools and Kosher Meals on Wheels to ChildHealth Plus Insurance. Each month we’ll highlight one ofthe programs to let you know how what the JCC does has real effects on real Staten Islanders’ lives every day. Your support of JCC programsand special events and much appreciated donations help to create a better Staten Island for so many people, including your family, friendsand neighbors.

Social Adult Day ProgramThe JCC’s Social Adult Day Program has been at the JCC for the past 10 years and was recently renamed the Social Adult Group Respite Program. Its mission is to provide respite for caregivers and help to keep the frail and elderly home as long as possible. While this programwas funded by the Department for the Aging for eight years, it was terminated because of budget cuts in 2008. Thanks to the advocacy ofJCC staff and members of the community, funding was reinstated for a short time and these services to this special group of individuals arenow integrated into the Caregiver Program.Services provided include: exercise, piano sing along, music therapy, art therapy, painting, pet therapy, reminiscent games, motor dexteritygames, entertainment and a Kosher nutritious balanced lunch. This supportive and nurturing program led by a trained and caring staff allows senior adults that are in the early stages of Alzheimers Diseaseor struggling with other cognitive disabling issues to gain a sense of accomplishment by providing simple tasks at which they achieve. Therespite program enables Caregivers to remain employed, shop, do errands or simply enjoy some rest or visit a friend while their loved one iscared for, stimulated and supervised here at the JCC Social Adult Group Respite Program.

Some of the comments we’ve received from family members: “We appreciate the care and assistance the Aides give to our Mother. They treat her with dignity and respect. Without this program we wouldnot be able to keep our mother at home with us.”

“This is a wonderful environment!”

“My father thoroughly enjoys coming to this program”

“My mother was wasting away at home until she joined your amazing program. Now she is happy , sleeps well at night, her appetite has improved. In addition, she is excited to bring home her projects at the end of the day and share them with us.”

Homeopathy at the Spa at the Jwith Shawn ValeHomeopathy, or homeopathic medicine, is a medical philosophy andpractice based on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself.Homeopathy was founded in the late 1700s in Germany and has beenwidely practiced throughout Europe. Homeopathic medicine viewssymptoms of illness as normal responses of the body as it attempts toregain health.Homeopathy is based on the idea that "like cures like." That is, if a sub-stance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a verysmall amount of the same substance may cure the illness. In theory, ahomeopathic dose enhances the body's normal healing and self-regu-latory processes.A homeopathic health practitioner (homeopath) uses pills or liquid mix-tures (solutions) containing only a little of an active ingredient (usuallya plant or mineral) for treatment of disease. These are known as highlydiluted or "potentiated" substances. There is some evidence to showthat homeopathic medicines may have helpful effects. Coming soon.

New! We are reviving our tradition of celebrating Jewish music month be-tween Purim and Pesach. Jewish music may have certain character-istics-melodic nuances, rhythmic patterns, and semitic instrumentaltimbres. It expresses certain ethnicity; one does not have to Jewishto compose Jewish music. Jewish music runs the gamut from litur-gical to folk to ethnic flavored music in classical forms. Who can re-sist stomping feet to a Klezmer band? Who can resist clapping handsto a lively hora? We are going to present a variety of Jewish musicalexperiences during this month and we hope you will celebrate withus. Keep tuned! WQatch for dates.

JCC Beacon Teens Race Their Solar Power CarFourteen Tottenville students and six staff mem-bers of the JCC Beacon Program from TottenvilleHigh School, who spent the preceding school yeardesigning and constructing a solar-powered car, took part in the Winston Solar Car Challenge in Dal-las, Texas in July. They entered their vehicle in the four-day event run

on the Dallas track, where temperatures topped morethan 100 degrees. The race is a competition geared toward designing andbuilding safe, road-worthy solar vehicles. Tottenville was the only school inNew York State represented in the race. The team placed in the top 50 per-cent, seventh out of 16 teams, in their first time out at the national race.Their solar car, while quick, was not tested for speed. Rather, its goal wasto log the most laps without killing its batteries. The Tottenville team, comprised of students from the school's green tech-nology program and automotive shop classes, call themselves the "SolarPirates." Their car, which is completely powered by the sun, is nicknamed"The Green Pirate”. Funding for the $15,000 project came from City Council members James

Oddo and Vincent Ignizio, as well as Con Edison and Time-Warner Cable, and of course, the JCC.

Dear Fit Pro’s,I went on a cruise this summer for my honeymoon and completely fellof the wagon with my healthy food choices. I lost track of everything Ilearned and practiced while getting back into shape for my weddingdress. I was surrounded by high fat tasty foods all week long. How can Istay on track next vacation without going overboard?

Signed,“Wedding Waddler”

Dear Waddler, Vacation is often a time to “let down the diet reins”. Kick back, enjoysome R &R, eat and drink! Interestingly enough there’s nothing like va-cation to kick start the “bathing suit” nutrition and training. Here are 3common diet traps while vacationing and what to do about them so youdon’t fall into the trap:• Prepare some of your own meals- vacation doesn’t have to mean eat-ing out breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you’re in a hotel, try a place thatoffers a little kitchenette with a stove and refrigerator. At the very least, prepare breakfast there-fruit, yogurts, oats…the basics! • Avoid having foods lying around the house-if they are there, you’ll eatthem. Keep chips, soda, and snack foods in a cabinet, “hidden” from plainview so every time you walk in the kitchen, you don’t just pick at them,it’s the definition of mindless eating. • Enjoy everything in moderation—yes, it’s just 1 week-but each day andnight of overeating, over drinking, and over snacking gets to be a bitmuch and can make you feel pretty bad.The key is to stick as close to your “normal” routine as much as pos-

sible. Get some exercise before the rest of the day starts, eat clean mostof the time and enjoy your vacation.

Carol’s CornerQuestion: What can we do to get back into shape quickly and effectivelyafter the summer? Answer: You can participate in unlimited group fitness classes at theSouth Shore!
