Public Reminder to Stop for School Buses
Whether on a city street, highway or county road, and regardless of the speed limit and the number of lanes, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing. A flashing stop arm will swing out while passengers are boarding or leaving the bus. (The only exception: on highways separated by a median, traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop). Once all passengers have boarded, the STOP arm will fold away. Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.

Thank you from the Friends of Annapolis Pool Society
The FAPS would like to thank all those individuals and businesses who sponsored swimmers in the 2013 24-hour swimathon which took place at the community pool on August 9th and 10th. Despite the rainy weather, swimmers enjoyed themselves overnight on Friday into Saturday. Thanks to all of you, we raised nearly $2600! The Annapolis Community Pool relies solely on grants and donations for its upkeep and your continuous generous support is very appreciated. A big thanks to all the volunteers for their many hours of work and also to the great lifeguarding staff we had this year. The pool is now closed for the season and we hope to see you all back again for a swim in 2014. Please check out our website at <www.annapolispool.ca> for updates or find us on Facebook.

On behalf of the Annapolis & District Natal Days Princess Committee, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Town of Annapolis Royal, Mrs. Jane Nicholson, the 2013 Royal Party In-Kind Sponsors, the many local businesses and community groups sponsoring the 2013 Natal Days Booklet, and everyone near and far who came out to contribute to and support the 2013 Royal Party in so many ways. All of this year’s young ladies: Princess Annapolis Heritage Society; Caitlin Bridson-Pateman; Princess Annapolis Save Easy, Courtney Campbell; Princess Leo’s Café, Alyssa Huston; Princess Annapolis Foodland, Zara LeBlanc; and Princess Hillsdale House, Hayley McIntyre all brought a great deal of poise and grace to their leadership skills development program and certainly made the judging for our new Queen a challenging process. We do so appreciate the time, care, and commitment of the judges panel; Mrs. Grace Butland, Mrs. Jaye McQuillin, and Mr. Syd Read, in their deliberation process. Congratulations to Miss Friendship, Zara leBlanc; 1st Lady In Waiting, Hayley McIntyre; and 2013 Queen Annapolis Royal, Caitlin Bridson-Pateman. In closing, I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2014 Queen Annapolis Royal Dinner to be held in March 2014. Sincerely, Ann Marie Monk, Annapolis & District Natal Days Princess Committee Chairperson
A HUGE THANK YOU
The Mayor and Town Council would like to thank Ann Marie and Bill Monk, Angela Amero, Jane Nicholson, the Princesses and their
families and all (too many to name) who helped make Natal Days such a success. The hard work and dedication behind the scene requires a lot of
time, a lot of effort, and many emails and phone calls. Thank you all very much.

‘Hawg Wild in the Gardens’! Labour Day Weekend brings the much anticipated annual Wharf Rat Rally, a gathering of motorcyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts in Digby, Nova Scotia. And here at the Historic Gardens, we’re part of it too! From Bike Photo Opps (yes, you heard me right!) in the Gar-dens, to creative motorcycle-inspired displays, to special discounts for Rally participants, Staff and Volunteers at the Gardens are rolling out the red carpet to welcome riders! A few years back, we thought it would be an “off the wall” idea to allow Wharf Rats to roll into the Historic Gardens for the greatest photo opp EVER! The Courtyard area took on a cycle theme, and groups of riders had a ball posing with their bikes amongst the flowers! The event has grown to be a “must do” tradition, so c’mon down and go ‘Hawg Wild in the Gardens’! September 1st and 2nd. www.historicgardens.com 532-7018

Tree News for September 2013 It is September now. I hope everyone has had a good summer season so far. I was very sad that 8 trees on St. Anthony Street were broken. The trees were still attached, so I was able to graft them back together. With help of Karen Achenbach (Historic Gardens), Sally and George, we braced the “broken limbs”, and put long iron bars to support the crown. I pruned the crown back to reduce the weight and reduce the mass of leaves that the trees need to feed. I am hopeful because the trees have not wilted yet. We will know by next summer if the grafts have taken and the trees will continue to be stable and grow. I have been watering the trees regularly to keep them growing and healing. On a different note: It will be apple season soon, so mark your calendar for Oct 19th, 2013, the apple pressing day at the Community Garden behind the legion. Bring your own apples and bottles and press your own cider. (If you want to join the garden team or simply want to ask some questions: come out on Friday mornings 10 am; behind the legion). There are 8 apple trees planted in the garden but they need to mature a bit. Surprisingly though one of them bears a lot of apples. It will be so much fun to start harvest and use those trees in the future. For any question email Angelika at [email protected] See you around.
DID YOU KNOW? Within the Town of Annapolis Royal Dogs By-law, it is an offence not to pick up after your dog; you must pick up after your dog and there are bags available on the side of the garbage bin in front of the Town Hall. It is also an offence to let your dog run at large on any private property without permission of the Owner.
DID YOU KNOW? That Parks Canada mandates pets must be under physical control at all times. When you bring your dog to a national park or national historic site, the animal is to be kept on a leash at all times. In addition to disturbing visitor’s experience, other visitors may be frightened by dogs. Dog owners are responsible to pick up after their dogs. No one visiting a Parks Canada Site wants to see dog mess. Keep our Town and Parks safe for all to enjoy, please leash your pet and pick up after them.
