With the increase in our ageing population, motorized mobility aids (MMA’s) such as three and four-wheel scooters are becoming a popular form of transportation. Fearing serious mishaps after seeing several

close calls, ECOL felt there was a need to protect and inform our elderly citizens. In collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec, we researched and translated all the necessary information to create a bilingual PowerPoint presentation on MMA safety. Community Police Officer Audrey Bastien Gingras of the SQ presented in French and ECOL’s outreach worker Jocelyne McGinty

presented the translated information in English. We were able to render many buggies more visible by the distribution of orange flags and reflector tape. We offer a special thanks to Ste. Anne’s Residence for the use of their hall, and to all the merchants who generously contributed door prizes and materials.

Intergenerational activities: Conrad Popko, a percussionist, led an activity that was much enjoyed by all at the Villa des Chutes Residence. The Grade Six class at Rawdon Elementary School was invited for this special event to close off the school year. Conrad will be back so that even more members of our community can enjoy this interactive activity.

What kinds of special activities would you like us to offer to our senior

community members? A zootherapy session? A High Tea with a 1930’s theme? Give us your suggestions.

Heat Wave ! We all know it has been one hot summer and many lives were lost in Quebec because of the extreme heat. ECOL’s outreach worker took the time to call up many community mem-bers, especially those living alone, to see how they were coping and to remind them to stay well-hydrated. All of our members made it safely through the heat waves.

ECOL’s outreach services are available to English-speaking

seniors in the north of Lanaudière who would like to have a friendly chat, receive information on community resources, find out how to access health and social services, consult health information (paper documents and videos) or who require assistance in figuring out their paperwork. Adult children wishing to discuss difficult subjects with their parents, such as the move to a seniors’ residence or end-of-life decisions, may also request assistance from our outreach worker. Contact us at 450-421-5379.

Navigating the Healthcare System -

Services Offered and How to Access Them

Our healthcare system has many challenges to meet in the upcoming years as more than half of our population enters their senior years. This is why more than ever, we need to take control of our own healthcare and be informed about what services are available and how to access them. CLSC Home Support Assistant, Jessica Van Doran, will be on hand to present the resources that they offer as well as a Community Health Education video that will give you tips to help you be more proactive.

October 2nd Outdoor Social Drumming

Drums have been used in every culture since ancient times and modern research shows positive effects on your health. Join Conrad Popko from Radorbis, as he leads a session by the Ouareau River at Kyte Farm. Confirmation of attendance would be appreciated so we can provide instruments for all participants. In case of rain, the session will be held indoors at the Wellness Center. We will be leaving from there at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Please let Diane know if you are willing to help drive other participants the short distance. 450-421-5929.

Talking About Prostate Cancer

It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and is completely curable when detected at an early stage. Hence the importance of screening, as your risk of developing prostate

cancer rises as you grow older. In Quebec, twelve (12) men are diagnosed daily. Please join us for a video presentation from PROCURE with Dr. Fred Saad, professor and Chief of Urology at the CHUM, as he explains the risk factors, the signs and symptoms, screening, (PSA test) and the latest treatment options.

October 16th Hero in Thirty CPR training

Hero in Thirty teaches the essential actions to take in an emergency situation, to be prepared to respond quickly and effectively. Trained individuals will be surer of themselves

During the training course, participants learn: to recognize signs of obstruction of the airways and of cardiac arrest; the Heimlich Maneuver (technique for clearing airways); hands-only CPR; the use of an AED – an automated external defibrillator, - which could increase the likelihood of survival by 75% or more. Partially funded by ECOL, the minimal cost will be determined by the number of group(s) but will range between $7 and $15. Laugh, Lunch & Learn!

As part of our funding program with McGill University, ECOL will be organizing English language conversation groups for employees of our regional health care institutions. This will help them become more comfortable in their ability to speak English, leading to better services for our commu-nity. Each series will involve six sessions over lunchtime and will take place in a health-care establishment, such as a hospital or CLSC, and will be offered to both the south and the north of the Lanaudière region. Thank you to our volunteers!

Are you an artist or a craftsperson?

Would you be interested in sharing your passion with elementary school students? We are in the planning stages to offer cultural activities in En-glish at Rawdon and Joliette Elementary Schools. Let us know if you would like to get involved!
