Unlike last year the weather was just “perfect” for an outdoor event. Guests arrived and chose their respective tables and then it was time to catch up with all their acquaintances. Before long it was time for the Clam Chowder to be served, and we all knew that this Lobsterfest was well on its way to being a great success. Dear Sisters and Brothers;I hope everyone enjoyed the

hot summer we had, and all tans are still looking good. Well it’s September again and it’s time to get back into the swing of things with meetings and functions for the local lodges and the Grand Lodge. Lodges that have continued to meet during the summer already have their activities scheduled, and it’s time for the rest of us to put our schedules together. Please check with the Grand Lodge when putting your ac-tivities schedules together, so that we don’t have confl icting dates with the Grand Lodge or any surrounding lodges, so we can all enjoy your Filial Lodges events.

Al l those who attended our Grand Lodge Cook-o u t w i l l r e m e m b e r August 8th; it certainly was a great day. There were about 130 members and guests at the Hingham Lodge who enjoyed the great culinary skills of the Hingham chefs. The lobsters were huge and sweet, and the steaks were done just right, and the trimmings were great, clam chowder, corn on the cob, salad, baked potatoes and watermelon.

All enjoyed the beautiful weather and the great camara-derie. Be sure to sign up early next year, I know the tickets will go fast.

On August 12th through the 15th, our OSIA National Ex-ecutive Session was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts and as the Host State, a reception dinner was held by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, a surf

and turf dinner was held at the Watertown Lodge, with 165 brother and sisters for all over the country including many from Massachusetts. I would like to thank the Benefi t Insur-ance Commission, the Wilm-ington Lodge, and the Winthrop Lodge for their support with the reception dinner.

It’s time to see who can knock off the defending state champs of the Sons of Italy Bocce Tournament to be held at the Watertown Lodge on September 19, 2010, you will need to bring you’re A game if you think you can beat the champs.

If you can’t play Bocce, come walk with us at the Breakheart Reservation, Saugus, Mas-sachusetts. On the 26th of September, at our annual C&E walk-a-thon, all proceeds go towards our scholarships.

First Ladies Reception at the Crestview, Woburn, Massa-chusetts, will be held on Octo-ber 3, 2010. Call the Grand Lodge for tickets.

I ask all of our members to show their Italian Pride and march or ride with us in the Columbus Day Parade, on the 10th of October, this year in East Boston. For more info call the Grand Lodge.

The Quincy Lodge will be holding our annual Cribbage Tournament on November 7, 2010, for signup sheets call the Grand Lodge.

Please make your reserva-tions early so you don’t get left out. Last year’s Purple Aster was a huge success and this year’s event on November 13, will be an even greater success. So don’t get left out, this event

will sell out quickly. Call the Grand Lodge for tickets.

October is Italian Heritage Month, and there are many events being held all over the state, we have listed them all so that our members can at-tend the events of their choice. Please help us celebrate and explore, the History, Culture, Language, Genius, Artistry and centuries of discoveries and accomplishments that we Ital-ians have achieved throughout the world, but especially in our communities.

Filial Lodges, should show their great pride during Italian Heritage Month, by displaying our Italian culture at our local libraries, or in our local Town Halls. Please make every effort to participate during the month of October, and enjoy Italian Heritage Month.

I would like to remind all of our members that we least forget what happened to this great country of ours on 9/11/2001.

We ask that all members fl y an American Flag to show our solidarity to the rest of the world.

Kathy and I would like to thank all our brothers and sis-ters for the great support the membership has given us, and the Grand Lodge of Massachu-setts. I’m sure we will see many of you at Grand Lodge Events, or at your Lodge functions.

Continue to visit our web site WWW.OSIAMA.ORG, if you have any suggestions on how to improve it, please contact us.

May God bless you all and God bless the Order Sons of Italy.

Preno-tatevi subito perche’ i biglietti stanno vendendo bene.

Hometown: Barrington, New HampshireItalian Roots: Bologna, ItalyOccupation: Bookkeeper, Property ManagerJoined OSIA: December 8, 1989Current Lodge: Granite State Lodge #2380, Rochester, New HampshireChief Duties State: State Trustee for District 7. I am responsive to oversee the Filial Lodges in District 7. I communicate all Grand Lodge events and reassure the Lodges that the Grand Lodge is ready to assist them in any way necessary. I am also responsible to audit the accounts of the Grand Lodge along with the other Trustees.Initiatives, Plans, Goals: My goal over the next two years as a State Trustee is to carry out the objectives of the Grand Lodge and to be a viable, supportive member of the Grand Council. I will strive to keep the communication going between the Filial Lodges and the Grand Lodge. Th e Filial Lodges feel isolated at times and my goal is to keep them involved and off er my help and guidance.OSIA’s Greatest Strength: I think our greatest strength is our Membership. Th e members that I have met over the years are very proud and humble of their Italian ancestry. I am very honored to be a part of an organization that has such pride. I joined OSIA because of the people. Th ey are genuinely warm and caring and made me a part of their family. I hope to pass this honor and pride on to my two daughters.OSIA Could Improve: Like any organization, OSIA is experiencing a decline in membership. We need to go back to what made this organization work in the beginning. We need to get all members of the family involved. It is diffi cult to get families together because of all the demands put on us but I feel we must make it work. Our children unfortunately did not grow up visiting with family every Sunday or are not lucky enough to have family living close by. As Liaison to the Junior Division, I would like to see all Filial Lodges strive to get their children and grandchildren involved. Start by bringing them to a meeting or a function. Th e Grand Lodge has sports events in which they can participate. I urge all of you to keep your Italian traditions alive by passing them on to the next generation. How Can Th is Be Done: I feel the Grand Lodge is making signifi cant strides in improving communication and in keeping up with technology. Today’s generation communicates on the internet or by cell phone. Th e Grand Lodge has a web site and is looking into other means of interaction with the Filial Lodges or prospective members. Advice for Lodge Presidents: Th e Filial Lodge Presidents have a pivotal role in the organization. Your members look to you for guidance and support. You need to keep your members informed and involved. Members feel appreciated and needed when they are asked to help or to hold an offi ce. Guide and support them and you will truly have a viable lodge.

More importantly I will communicate to them the direct benefi ts and advantages that they will have in participating in the numerous Grand Lodge programs that we have to off er.OSIA’s Greatest Strength: I believe that our greatest strength lies in the three principals of our Great organization which are Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Our organization instills a fraternal understanding to all of our members the value of making all of our lives more constructive and useful through the many, many charitable endeavors and worthwhile programs we presently have established annually throughout all of our Lodges statewide. We are able to unite together in development of various projects which contribute to the fi nancial, educational, and charitable needs of our respective communities, and of course to the welfare of all of our members. Th e majority of our members, have joined OSIA as members of Italian descent and have followed in the same footsteps of our fathers and grandfathers before them. My greatest inspiration came from my own father who paved a way for me to recognize the signifi cance of my Italian background and heritage and to then pursue my own productive career in the Order.OSIA Could Improve: OSIA may improve primarily in the area of membership increase, and to unite together for the betterment of the Order. How Can Th is Be Done: We have already made great strides in increasing membership by establishing various programs specifi cally to attract the new member. We scheduled monthly organization and educational seminars in every district to assist Lodge members in preparation of ways to conduct more productive meetings, and learn more about OSIA’s goals and plans for the future of the Order. We have also organized highly successful membership drives.Advice to Lodge Presidents: My advice to all of our Lodge President’s is simply to not settle for the way things have been done in the past. In other words we need to expand our horizons by establishing new activities and new programs that will be a catch all to interest new members. We need to travel more into our respective communities and communicate to potential new members the inherent advantages that they will receive by joining our organization. Let’s try to get every current member to bring in at least one new member to the Order. Even more importantly, please let’s not give up in attempting to keep all of our Lodges alive and prospering. I will encourage all of our Lodges to work in conjunction with the Grand Lodge in the development of new programs and fundraisers to help expand each membership exponentially, and make their Lodges bigger and stronger than ever.GRAND LODGE

“I believe there is an enormous need, to help the helpers take the world in the right direction,” he said. Noting that many in the audience are descendents of Italian immigrants, he said “the values embodied by the Sons of Italy will take the country a long way ... we are a better country because we have immigrants. I think we ought to raise the ceil-ing on immigration.”

3 cups unbleached fl our (preferably King Arthur or Gold Medal)1 beaten egg1 tsp. salt1 pound Ricotta whole milk cheese4 quarts boiling salted water

In a bowl mix Ricotta cheese, beaten eggs and salt. Add fl our gradually to the mixture, mixing by hand, until you have soft dough. Remove dough from bowl and place dough on a fl oured pastry board to knead. If dough sticks to your fi ngers or hands add a little fl our and continue kneading until the dough is soft, smooth and pliable.

Cut and roll portions into long 8" or 10" rolls of about one inch thickness. Place in bowl and cover. Taking one roll at the time, fl at-ten roll slightly with your hand or a rolling pin. Cut into one-inch portions. With your index and middle fi ngertips press into each piece of dough and roll fi ngers forward in the dough. This will curl the dough into Gnocchi. Continue until all dough is used.

For cooking Gnocchi, boil about 4 quarts of salted water. After dropping Gnocchi into the boiling water stir and cover. Watch care-fully because water boils over quickly. Gnocchi will fl oat to the top as they cook. They cook rapidly. Check for consistency desired. Drain and place in a bowl. Add your tomato sauce and serve.

Serves four.Note: I love the memories of watching my parents make homemade

macaroni in our home. They didn’t seem to have a written recipe. It was all stored in their minds. Through the years, I decided they should be written out. I watched Mama measure out the fl our, add the water or beaten eggs and all the necessary ingredients. Papa kneaded the dough. Mama always took out her extra long wooden rolling pin when the dough had to be rolled into thin round portions before Papa could fold it and then cut it into Linguine.

For Gnocchi, Papa cut up the dough after kneading it. Mama, with two fi ngers, patiently formed the small portions of cut up dough into Gnocchi. Before my brother Peter and I knew it the homemade macaroni was ready to serve at noontime for Sunday dinner. They always made it seem like it was such a pleasure serving homemade macaroni; and it really was.

LODGE HISTORIESIn this issue we are featuring the Cristoforo Colombo Regina Elena Lodge #169. If you have not as

yet sent in your lodge history, please do and send it to the attention of our Historical Chairman Delia Bartucca at the Grand Lodge Offi ce, 93 Concord Ave., Belmont, Massachusetts 02478.

CRISTOFORO COLOMBO REGINA ELENA LODGE #169

Both lodges merged on November 2, 1970 under the combined name: CRISTOFORO COLOMBO REGINA ELENA LODGE #169, now a Mixed Lodge.

The men’s Cristoforo Colombo Lodge purchased a piece of land from the city of Fitchburg shortly after they were instituted because of a strong desire of the membership to own their own build-ing. The realization of this home fi nally came to fruition, on June 27, 1963, under the leadership of John R. Pacetti who was Venerable during the years 1961-1963, and committee members of the

land committee: William Giadone, Chairman; John D. Oliva, Secretary; John R. Pacetti, Trea-surer; Board of Directors, Frank DiBenedetto, Frank DiPietro, Joseph Pandiscio, and Peter J. Levanti.

The home prospered for many years, and held many functions, until the city of Fitchburg de-cided that fraternal organizations would no longer be tax exempt, and the President, Santo Sciabar-rasi, and offi cers sold the building. Meetings were then held at St. Anthony’s School Hall, at 123 Salem Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420.

Grand Lodge, OSIA, Sponsors“Tutto Italiano,” Italian Car Day

For the last 15 years, the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline has sponsored a lawn event for Italian cars. This event, called “Tutto Italiano,” has in-creased in popularity each year. This year 5,000 people attended and had the opportunity to view hundreds of beautiful Italian cars and motorcycles. This year, the OSIA Grand Lodge of Mas-sachusetts became an offi cial event sponsor, sharing this honor with the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, and Ducati Motor-cycles. The President of Larz Anderson, Michael Iandoli, who is a member of Boston’s Renais-sance Lodge, made it possible for the Grand Lodge to become an event sponsor.

The Larz Anderson Auto Mu-seum is home to “America’s old-est car collection.” For over 75 years, the Larz Anderson Auto Museum has been supporting the collector car community through a variety of educa-tional programs, exhibits, and lectures. Today, the Museum’s primary goal is its continued support of the collector car community through its lawn events and the preservation of a permanent collection of early automobiles. “Tutto Italiano,” with its Italian cars, has become the most popular lawn event for the Museum.

OSIA State President Jim DiStefano, with assistance from the Watertown Lodge’s Lino Rullo and Dr. Dean Saluti from Boston’s Renaissance Lodge, worked for months with the Larz Anderson staff to bring “Tutto Italiano” closer to Bos-ton’s Italian community.

First, the Grand Lodge solic-ited support from the Boston North End’s La Summa Restau-rant. A large tent was erected, where Barbara Summa and her staff served a wonderful home-made pasta lunch that included freshly made cannolis for des-sert. Event attendees ate lunch, sitting under Barbara’s tent on picnic tables with checkered tablecloths surrounded by Ferraris, Maseratis, and Lam-borghinis. It was a wonderful

The new OSIA Grand Lodge recruiting sign is displayed at “Tutto Italiano” by State President Jim DiStefano and Ruby Salter, a “Tutto Italiano” car judge, Saluti Cahn employee, and a big fan of Boston’s Renaissance Lodge.

experience, and people felt like they were in Rome.

Next, Jim DiStefano worked with Lino Rullo to bring in Bocce players and to provide a Bocce demonstration for event attendees. An actual Bocce court was “chalked off” on the lawn behind the Ferraris. Peo-ple who had never seen Bocce played were fascinated. Again with help from Lino Rullo, the Grand Lodge was able to bring in the famous “Roma Band” from Boston’s North End. The “Roma Band” marched through the cars on display and around the Bocce court while playing traditional Italian songs. This music really added to the at-mosphere.

Lastly, an OSIA Grand Lodge tent was erected, and a new

member recruiting sign was printed and on display. State President Jim DiStefano had worked with State Second Vice President, Tony Sestito, and the Grand Lodge Membership Com-mission staffed the tent. New members were recruited all day. As event attendees approached the tent with the Grand Lodge banner displayed, they learned about OSIA from the Member-ship Commission. There were OSIA regalia, polo shirts, etc. for sale, and the regalia was a hit. Boston’s Renaissance Lodge had 50+ members at “Tutto Ital-iano.” Some Renaissance Lodge members had Italian cars that were displayed. There were also some Renaissance Lodge mem-bers who served as car Judges for this event.

He was known for his myriad of accomplishments during his long life, but the unoffi cial title of “Mr. Sons of Italy” was the one of which he was most proud. Peter B. Gay, Esquire passed away on July 8, 2010 at the age of 94, having devoted more than 70 years of his life to the Order Sons of Italy in Amer-ica. Peter served as Supreme Venerable (National President) of the Order from 1973-1975. Peter was also bestowed the title of “Honorary State Past Presi-dent” by a unanimous vote of the delegates assembled at the State Convention of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

In light of Peter’s service and commitment to his Italian heritage and the Order Sons of Italy in America, the members of

Columbia Lodge #540 of TauntonChanges Name to

Peter B. Gay Lodge #540

his lodge unanimously voted to change their name as a lasting tribute to his years of dedicated service to the community, his lodge, the Grand Lodge of Mas-sachusetts and the Supreme Lodge.

In October 1999, then Gov-ernor A. Paul Cellucci signed into law legislation proclaiming October as Italian American Heritage Month in the Com-monwealth of Massachusetts. To help celebrate this year’s 12th anniversary, the Wilming-ton Sons of Italy, in conjunc-tion with the Italian Heritage Committee, is holding its First Annual Italian American Heri-tage Month Golf Classic. This tournament, which will be held at the Hillview Country Club in North Reading, Massachusetts, will take place on Friday, Octo-ber 22, 2010.

Golfers comprised of four men/women teams can play 18 holes with a golf cart at a donation of $125.00 per player. Golfers will enjoy a continental breakfast and a luncheon buf-fet. There will be contests on the course such as longest drive, straightest drive and closest to the pin, a 50/50 raffl e hole, prizes for the top three teams and a gift for each player.

If golfi ng is not your sport, you can still show your support by becoming a course sponsor. Sponsoring a Tee Box or Hole is a donation of $100.00. Golf Cart sponsorships are also available for a donation of $50.00. Spon-sors’ name, business or orga-

nization will be prominently displayed on the golf course, in our public relation write-ups and announced during our luncheon.

Proceeds from this year’s golf tournament will benefit our charitable and scholarship programs as well as assist our committee and our participat-ing organizations in organizing and coordinating Italian cul-tural activities across the Com-monwealth of Massachusetts during the month of October. Most of these programs are free and open to the public. Pro-grams include Italian art, his-tory, language, music, opera, food, dance and fi lm. Our goal is to demonstrate the beautiful creativity of Italian culture and its infl uence on the world.

There will be a raffl e at the luncheon to assist in fundrais-ing. We would be grateful to receive a gift certifi cate or dona-tion to help enhance our raffl e table. Additional luncheon tickets may be purchased for a donation of $30.00 per person. To volunteer at the tournament, or if you require further infor-mation, please contact Kevin Caira at 978-657-7734.

Your generosity and support of our golf tournament is greatly appreciated.
