a what’s on guide to everything we do including: New Classical Season featuring Northern Sinfonia, JUICE Festival, BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking, North East Guitar Festival, Absolute Beginner Workshops
Plainsong, or Paco Peña’s high octane new show, or Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends, or ‘The Dirty Three’ Melbourne trio of Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White - or perhaps the sumptuous spectacle of a Venetian Coronation from 1595 re-created in Durham Cathedral!

Welcome to our latest quarterly diary and the autumn resumption of all your favourite programming strands – wide-ranging performance series, and our learning and participation programmes covering most musical genres, for all kinds of learners of all ages. This diary also includes four of our popular annual festivals – JUICE (the ever more adventurous NewcastleGateshead festival for children and young people), BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking (for the young at heart of all ages!), the NE Guitar Festival (enticingly packed with outstanding guitarists), and the boisterously enjoyable World of Brass weekend.
Meanwhile Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, resume after the summer break with (not inaptly!) ‘Calling All Workers’ (a delicious John Wilson feast of British light music), and later on John returns to conduct Vaughan Williams’ haunting wartime 5th Symphony. Thomas Zehetmair, after

his triumphant cycles of Beethoven and Schubert symphonies, this season pairs all the symphonies of Brahms and Schumann (‘The Romantic Symphony’), and other familiar Sinfonia strands include the eclectic Late Mix (9pm in the focused intimacy of Hall Two), plus Carl Davis leading Northern Sinfonia through A Sci-Fi Odyssey; Ilan Volkov premiering a sackbut concerto from the quirkily distinctive pen of Benedict Mason, and in October Northern Sinfonia launch a six-concert UK tour partnering Copenhagen’s cult band Efterklang.
We launch the new season with one of our richest ever menus of visiting artists (from Dexys to Spiritualized, Joan Armatrading to Don McLean, Grizzly Bear to Lanterns on the Lake and Dweezil Zappa to Levellers Acoustic!), then the many devotees of The Sage Gateshead special events will want to explore the amazing jazz drumming encounter between Jack DeJohnette and Polar Bear, or the farewell tour of the unique intercultural
