NEWS AND COMMENTOnly a couple of things this month -

REMEMBER COMMITTEE MEETING – Wednesday 25th Septemberat the Six Bells Newdigate 8 pm –All welcome!

Working Party Saturday 12th OctoberThis was planned in at our last Committee Meeting for Northlands –however please give Tim a ring on 01306 712317 if you are thinkingof coming as we may change the venue – or the date – dependingon weather etc – it would just be for the morning to clear areas forsections.

Articles for NewsletterI know Dick has been wishing for some contributions for more yearsthan you can imagine so thanks to our Chairman for sending thefollowing from the South of France… - please remember anycontributions are always welcome and help fill the pages ………

Villas and meetings

As you read this I will be sunning myself in my capacious villa in theSouth of France. Sitting in my shady garden enjoying the fragrance ofthe exotic flowers scattered around our extensive grounds. Soon Dickiethe house hobbit will arrive offering me a refreshing glass of chilledchampers.

The above image is what our beloved Editor would have you believeas he constantly mentions our villa in France. This is also the sort ofplace I expected would become ours having taken the job of Chairmana couple of years ago. The salary and perks offered at the time wouldhave easily supported the purchase and up keep of a villa – sadlydespite constant nagging no salary has been paid, although I anassured that a cheque is in the post.

In reality we have an apartment ( all 40 square meters of it ). It isvery nice and close to the Med but it is not the palace our Hon. Editorwould have you believe!

On a more serious note Dick mentioned the forthcoming committeemeeting. Like most amateur clubs HR’s organisation is done by a few

Page 4: September News

people. There is nothing wrong in that but there is always the problemthat only the ideas of those few will be used to run the club and that,in turn may mean the membership does not get out of the club all thatit could.

The meeting is on Wednesday the 25th of September at the Six BellsNewdigate. If you can come along great – but if you can’t but haveany ideas/suggestions for social events or trials formats do let us know.If you don’t tell us your ideas we can’t consider them.

PS For all you Harry Potter fans J K Rowling based her character Dobbiethe house elf on Dickie the house hobbit.

PPS The first of the Hobbit films is out and is entitled “ An unexpectedjourney “. The title was inspired by our chief hobbit’s approach to trialsriding as this repeatedly lead to “ An unexpected result “ .

ROME SOLIDIFIES Trial – 1st September 2013

For years the wettest, muddiest of reputations was attributed to RomeWoods, many riders have retired there, but not anymore, Sunday’strial was like riding on concrete. The splits in the ground were 18inches deep but riders complaints were hard bumps with ‘no give’ inthe soil resulting in aching arms and shoulders – Sean P was DNF, thetwin shock had not been assisting and he wished for his modern bike!

Team Cossacks Adrian and Adam, John P and Dave A (the originalTeabag had his loyalty day) and Mike stepped in to replace Tim whowas at Silverstone for the GP practice. Mike gave the white riders agood workout (1/2 way score 80), apparently he’d been easing themoff a bit earlier on! Blue riders on the other hand had an easy day, while yellows were about right. Another feature of the hard groundwas the pain when you hit it, Mike crunched his shoulder and GrahamK had some difficulties too, both DNF.

Backward to signing on where arrivals were slow with some rarespecies making an appearance i.e. Dave Renham who was destined

for 1st place on White and John Mitchell 2nd on Blue. Dave said if he’dwanted a good trial he’d have gone to Bagshot, so I’ve come here!

Page 5: September News

The Bray clan had been absent for 3 trials; Nigel explained - one trialTom had been out at night getting happy, the next event Elaine wentcopycat, in both cases the excess of intoxicants did not permit an earlymorning start – as they are part of next months’ team we can onlyhope for improvement.

We only ended up with 33 entries, gone are the days of regular 50and over, even today, out of the 33 at least 16 were from other clubs– where are all our members? According to the chef in my localhostelry “it’s the last weekend of the school holidays – always thequietest” and we only got 1 schoolboy entry, perhaps he was right!

So plenty of time for the social scene to develop, in other words thegossip. Tom H is always an earlybird so he had plenty of time to listento the tale of Mike’s tent/awning that fixed to the side of his van - aspecial purchase for a two day trial. On finishing the trial he finds bothblown away so slept in his van on his airbed. This punctures anddeflates in the night resulting in severe backache and pain killers fora week, he won’t be camping again!

Then there was Silverstone from Fiona, a Range Rover prototype thatwouldn’t start from John P until we reached start time. A little whileafter Rob E arrived – he’d been having problems with his carb andwouldn’t leave home till it started, it went OK for the trial but the riderwas more of a problem!

Finding sections with riders on is difficult, particularly when they’re allspread out. Rachel and Simon riding reds have an easy ride on 10losing few marks overall but by then Elaine had given up as her balancewas not with her. Obviously more liquid refreshment was needed!!Section 10 was the long ditch uphill, plenty of grip but bumps to throwyou off, eventually a gaggle of riders turned up – Sean has a dab butDave R cleans as do Mike H and Craig C. Rich E riding blue tries andcleans, reckons he might start up a class next time. Rob Mc and AdrianH tackle it slowly and clean with ease. On section 9 to my surpriseGordon and Kieran are not losing marks but the big surprise is at thefinish, it’s the first time Kieran has finished a trial and 2 marks in frontof Rob E, bring on the rain! Mick D says he’d lost 4 x 5 on Section 7where I hear there is actually some soft going (mud!) – I think this iswhere Graham K came a cropper. John P marked out Yellows – theonly marks I saw him lose were on section 5 beside where the streamused to be – 2 dabs here, it got wetter later on.

Finishing Touches –Blue Route – Tom H liked the hard stuff and was 9 marks clear ofJohn M with Rob Mc and Rich E close, then 20 marks on is Tim, notenjoying the hard stuff so much, he had a 3 when he rode up section7 ditch with a lot of bounce. Adrian H set up the route and was tryingto make it look hard to help Harry R!

Yellow Route – RRND rider Trevor H was best rider and Mike B who

had entered as an HR Rider was 2nd but 1st HR home. It was another

23 marks before we got to the 2nd HR which was course marker JohnP. Then look at Adam’s good result, level with Mick D, both on 46 –that’s Rossi’s number so they’re on track to be winners! Gordon andNigel were only a mark apart – but Kieran ? – well he finished!

White Route – For Dave R to stay and finish one of our events isunusual; Mike says it was because he was in someone else’s van whowouldn’t stop. Mick M was only a point away and Craig C had a goodday, his riding with Mike Hyden rubbed off a bit but Mike is new toWhites and improving all the time. Tom B was dnf due to clutchproblems, not the drink!

Reds had it easy. Simon and Rachel didn’t tire, when going up toYellows was mentioned Simon reckoned he’s peaked!

The weather had been so kind everyone seemed reluctant to leave –whilst we can’t give the Cossacks a pat on the back for that, they hadprovided us with what was adjudged to be a good trial and they don’toften say that at Rome Woods.

SE Group Trial Ockley, 11.8.13Being local and run by Reigate and Redhill I thought we’d see a largeHR entry but there was only 5 out of an entry of over 50. Looking atthe results it was surprising to see Jim Scott and Derek Cranfield ridingin the wobblers class but they only dropped 3 marks.
