Those who attended the Missouri Master Naturalist Conference in Joplin the weekend of September 23rd had a great time! We had almost perfect weather, really excellent advanced training sessions, and the Chert Glades chapter did an outstanding job hosting the conference! I’ll share a bit about the sessions I attended. One of the pre-conference sessions was held at Prairie State Park. We learned how Native Americans made use of almost all parts of a bison, from the horns to the hoofs. A few of us tried our hand at throwing an atlatl (at-lat-l), a tool they used for extra leverage in throwing a spear. I was riding with Emily Wilson and Meredith Donaldson, and as we left the park, the bison were right up next to the road. Love it when photo opportunities are made easy

Louise Flenner and Emily Wilson trying their hand at throwing a spear with the atlatl.

Saturday I attended an excellent session on Butterflies’ Lives. The presenter sent us home with live Prometheus moth cocoons, and Luna moth caterpillars. Not having walnut leaves to feed the Luna, I gave mine to Suzanne Wright, who was also in the session, to raise. I’m anxiously waiting for the Prometheus to break out of its cocoon, and I’m expecting some great photos from Suzanne of the transformation of the Luna! Sunday morning Joyce Haynes, Chert Glades chapter member, shared her passion for birds with a presentation on feathers, nests, and eggs. She helped the group get into the frame of mind of a bird when it comes to building a nest, by having us try to build one. I decided taking pictures was the easier route, but Suzanne Wright, Sally Swanson, Nancy Bowles, and Louise Flenner accepted the challenge. Suzanne won a prize for her nest Nancy said she needed six hands, so just imagine the effort it takes for a bird with a small beak to build a nest!! At the end of the conference they announced the photo contest winners, and our very own Bobb Swanson won in the Landscape category, and also won the People’s Choice Award with another of his photos! Great job, and congratulations Bobb!! See his winning photos on the next page.

The Pink Planarians are Back! From Roxie Campbell, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park Park Naturalist On September 24th, staff and volunteers conducted a research trip into Devil’s Icebox Cave and found that the numbers of pink planarians has finally rebounded! Their numbers had been low since 2009 when a drastic decline in their prey animals was recorded. The prey animals returned to normal numbers within months, but the pink planarian numbers stayed low. As the park naturalist, I have been quite concerned and was afraid that we’d be discouraged once again on this survey trip. My concern was met with relief! It was fun to find so many and it felt refreshing to spot one when not even looking for one (at Corner Rapids walking by). Here are the results: The total count for the 3 survey plots was 15. This is still well below the average of 29 (from the four fall surveys held 2004-2007), but it is up from a total of 2 or 3 which is what we found in fall 2009, spring 2010, fall 2010 and spring 2011 (we do the survey twice a year). The most exciting news came from timed counts which added another 37 pink planarians! That makes the day’s total 52! Typically, we saw a large pink planarian and near it 2 or 3 small ones, so it appears that they have been reproducing! The drought and low clear water conditions have probably been helpful. We’re just happy for good news for this cave dweller that has been found to live only in the Devil’s Icebox Cave system.
