    International Cross-Cultural Day

    Study a different country with the classtoday. Learn how to say a few wordsin the countrys native language.

    National Chicken MonthHave students bring inchicken recipes fromhome. Make a copy ofeach recipe for each chi ld inthe class. Then, have students makeKickin Chicken Recipe Books toshare with their families.

    Native AmericanDayis the fourthFriday in September.Some NativeAmericans usedtotem poles to recordsuperstition, life, andlegends. Have studentscreate totem polesusing long cardboard tubes.

    Mayflowers out of milk cartons. Cutthe tops off milk cartons and staplestraws to the sides. Decorate the boatsand make sails to attach to the straws.

    cleaning or any other job that hasbeen put off for too long.Birthday of the U.S. TreasuryProvide

    students with circles or rectangular paperto design anoriginal bill orcoin of theirchoice.

    National Ethnic Foods MonthHave yourclass pick a country. Then, celebrate thatcountry by having a party and enjoyingits native foods.

    Alikis BirthdayThis childrens author andillustrator was born in 1920. Read a bookwritten by Aliki. Have students draw apicture to illustrate something that

    happened in the story.

    Anna Mary Grandma Moses BirthdayThis American primitive painter was bornin 1860. Find pictures of her paintings andshare them with the children.

    Substitute TeacherAppreciation WeekisSeptember 5-11. Havethe class make cards forsubstitute teachers.When the class has asubstitute teacher for aday, send one to thesubstitute.

    National School Success MonthMakea Schools Cool bulletin board. Cut

    apple shapes from constructionpaper. Have studentswrite two reasons whythey like school on theapples. Post on abulletin board.

    Deaf Awareness Weekis the last week ofSeptember. Teachstudents short phrasesor the alphabet insign language.

    National Piano MonthBring in somemusic featuring this instrument toshare with the class.

    National Student DayPut eachstudents name in a hat. Have eachstudent choose a name (if they picktheir own, have them draw again).Then, ask each student to writesomething good about the studentthey chose to share with the class.

    National Literacy MonthBrainstorm a list of favoritebooks with students. Put someof the books in a learningcenter. Allow students to readthese books during free time,or read one to the class asa reward for good behavior.

    Save the Tiger MonthHavestudents save any tigers they find inmagazines, newspapers, ads,storybooks, etc. Ask students to bringthem in to post on a bulletin board.

    National 5-A-Day Weekis September 12-18. Itis set aside to encouragepeople to eat five or more servings offruits and vegetables each day. Havestudents bring in different fruits andvegetables to sample.
