VOTE  VOTE  VOTE!  It is our greatest weapon.

Let's not think that someone else will take care of preserving our future and is it true that 10% of Islip teachers, in service or retired, are not even registered?

Some of our members have moved recently. Be sure to register in your new location. If you plan to be away on election day you can get an absentee ballot. It is very easy to do and you can vote ahead of time.  We are counting on October's bright blue weather to make it a memorable walk to raise money for breast cancer.  The date is October 16 and the location is Jones Beach. The time to sign in at the RC 21 table is 8:00am.  If you can't attend please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society, which you can forward to me.  RC 21 will hold its' annual welcome brunch on October 25th. Our group usually has very good attendance at this function for several reasons. We enjoy getting together, the meeting is informative, we show our support for NYSUT and, of course, the buffet is FABULOUS! The location is West Lake on Montauk Hwy in Patchogue and the cost is $30.00. Did I mention that there are really terrific door prizes, raffles and free gifts?  You can contact Marie Kanzler ASAP at 204 Piney St. Islip Terrace, 11752.  This summer, I visited Western Virginia for the first time. It is truly beautiful in the mountains and the interstate highways make it easy to travel. If you  went someplace new this year, we'd love to hear from you about your experiences.  Please contact Carolyn Caamano and share your experiences with us.

Enjoy this good weather while it lasts. Be well and happy. Marilyn

Reception & Award Presentations will be on Sunday, October 30th starting at 2:30 p.m. and will include Cash & Meritorious Awards for this year’s outstanding works.

The Carriage House Art Show viewing hours are Tues/Wed/Thur/Fri-12 Noon-4:00 p.m. and Sat/Sun 1:00-4:00 p.m. The Arboretum is closed on Mondays.

Come join us and enjoy a day of Art in beautiful and prestigious surroundings of outdoor plantings and flowers. Have lunch in the Manor House with magnificent fireplaces, woodworkings, stained glass windows and a small natural history display. Taking a quiet walk along the grounds overlooking the lovely Connetquot River should definitely be on your to do list. We are looking forward to seeing you there soon.

DID YOU KNOW? Amazon, the largest bookseller in the country, reported in 2011 it is now selling more books in its electronic format than in the old paper-and-ink format. Does this spell the doom of the physical book? Certainly not immediately, but what it does mean is the book business will go through a transformation in the next decade more profound than any it has seen since Gutenberg introduced printing from moveable type in the 1450s.

Learning to use todays’ newer technology can be very helpful, enjoyable and entertaining.

Your vote counts more now than ever before especially since many of our earned benefits are now under fire by politicians at every level of government. Rather than looking at where continued wasteful policies & entitlements can be curtailed or eliminated politicians unfortunately find it much easier to indulge in a smoke & mirrors strategy by attacking our teaching profession and those benefits we worked so hard for over the years to obtain.

By voting and contacting legislators you are expressing your views and opinions and stating what you think should happen in your future. Who and what you vote for will affect taxes, laws and the educational reforms you believe are so critical to the learning environments necessary in todays’ classrooms.

Who you vote for hopefully will look to see where money can be saved responsibly. When you are passionate about your profession you are ensuring your vote should be going towards those things you deem vital to protect.

We are blessed to be living in a society that encourages freedom of speech and allows us to vote for who we think will do a good job to run our local, state and national governments. Dismissing your right to vote is mocking the efforts that people all over the world for centuries have had to face to finally establish a successful democracy. Politics can be complicated, but it really need not be. If you look to your basic beliefs and how you run your life, you can find a political team that will represent some, if not all, of your core values.

You can look to our educational leaders in NYSUT & RC#21 for additional information on all educational & political issues that are of vital importance to you as a Retiree.

We all complain from time to time about the state of the political scene we live in but what right do we have to say anything about it if we do not take the time to vote?

YOU & YOUR VOTE CAN STILL BE A POWERFUL VOICE IN UPCOMING ELECTIONS

WHY SHOULD I VOTE?Yes, Every Vote Does Count!!!
