Packing My ParachuteThe Air Force has a good idea. It periodically requires the people who pack parachutes to make jumps. There is no quality problem with the way the chutes are packed.

When I first heard this story, it made me laugh out loud. Of course, we would be extra careful if our OWN lives were at risk. If someone else is going to take the leap, we are not quite so worried about the outcome.I’m on the verge of taking a new leap of faith. I have been called to serve as the new lead pastor at First United Church of Oak Park begin-ning October 1.

This is an exciting adventure for me, but it is also risky. I will have to leave the safety of the “mother ship” of Union Church. I have been here for four years, and I have grown to love the congregation and all of its members. This is a good place, and you have been very good to me, so in some ways I would like to stay onboard. I have learned my way around, and it’s been a great ride.

On the other hand, I have felt God tapping me on the shoulder for the

last year, asking me to take a leap into the unknown (okay, I know Oak Park is not ex-actly an exotic mission field). “Use your leadership gifts!” is the message I got. “Put your doctor of ministry degree to work,” I heard. God some-times nudges us, sometimes pushes us, and sometimes hits us over the head until we get the message.

Then the church in Oak Park sent me a letter saying that a colleague had recommended me for the position. Two people who know me well read the Oak Park church profile and said it sounded like the perfect place for me. I prayed and waited. I put the decision in God’s hands. I went through the interview process, try-ing to stay open to God’s leading. “God, is this where you want me to serve?” I kept asking. And the search committee chose me as their final candidate.

It would be easier to stay here. But I have learned that I can trust God to pack a good parachute for me. Every time I have risked following God’s lead, I came to a safe landing.

Before I jump out of the hatch, I need to say goodbye to all of you. Goodbye to the 9 a.m. service, with children leap-ing up to collect the offering and rev-erently waiting to receive communion. Goodbye to the membership committee, spending hours together stuffing and stamping and praying over mailings to new residents in the community. Good-bye to the Union Forums, where we talked about everything from Islamic terrorism to global warming.

Goodbye to small groups, sharing our lives together, and meeting at Ethel’s Chocolate Lounge. Good-bye to baptisms, weddings and me-morial services – laughter and tears and so much love in one sacred place. Goodbye to the Prayer and Healing Service, standing in a circle of blessing in the Chapel. Goodbye to inspiring worship and amazing music and (sob) Resale!

I will miss all of the members and staff of this church. Thank you for everything you have taught me.

I hope you’ll help me pack my para-chute this month. I’ll only jump if I know that God goes with me – and I can carry a little bit of your love tucked in every pocket.

Invitation to Faith: Christian Formation for Children

Fall Sunday School Begins September 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.Children in Kindergarten and up will start in 10:00 Worship

Nursery- Nursery care for infants through age 2 is located in Classroom E on the lower level. Our childcare staff are Pam Cole, a nanny, Beth Lane – a former high school teacher in family sciences, Rachel Harley – a high school senior and Tori Sims – a high school junior.

3s and 4s –Christian Education for children ages 3 and 4 year-olds is located in Classroom C on the lower level. Children will hear the familiar stories of the Old and New Testaments. In these classes children are actively involved in responding to the message of Scripture in various ways, including music, storytelling and art.

Kindergarten through 2nd grades – Sunday School for this group will be in new classrooms that are side by side on the main level, Helen Hall and Classrooms J&K. The classrooms are located right off the Gathering Place for easier access from the sanctuary. Sunday School will begin in the sanctuary at 10:00 worship. Families will worship together for the first ten minutes. The children will leave the sanctuary and proceed to their classrooms to continue with their Sunday School program. This program is designed to provide children with a rewarding and hands-on way to learn about God. Three kinds of stories are used: narrative Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments, Jesus’ parables, and litur-gical stories dealing with worship, sacraments, and rituals of our faith.

3rd-5th grades – Sunday School for this age group will be in two classrooms on the upper level, the Grace and the Faith/Hope rooms. Sunday School will begin in the sanctuary at 10:00 worship. Families will worship together for the first ten minutes. The children will leave the sanctuary and proceed to their classrooms to continue with the Sunday School program. The curriculum offers two tracks. The curriculum for year “A,” is a series about the life and ministry of Jesus and the disciples based on the gospel of Mark. The curriculum for year “B,” covers the stories about Jesus’ ministry, parables and early church history.

Confirmation: We continue to strive to present the most meaningful and relevant Confirmation program we can; so we begin a new year with a new vision and a new pedagogy. We have moved from an “informational” model to a “transforma-tional” model; which has many exciting new pos-sibilities.

There are two sections of Confirmation: 6th & 7th Grade Confirmation and 8th Grade Confirmation. The program is designed to augment the church’s total ministry and will meet throughout the year on scheduled days. There are no regular Sunday morning hour-long sessions (that is a vestige of the informational model).

If you have not received an orientation letter in the last two weeks and have an interest/questions about the program, please contact Pastor Thom or Jeremy Hylen at (630) 323.4303 at ext. 6693 and 6656 respectively. If you have an interest in be-ing a mentor, please contact David Knecht at (630) 323.4303 ext. 6655.

Invitation to Faith: Christian Formation for Youth

Summer Work Tour 08: What a Finale, as a Risk Pays Off!

“All Nite City STOMP” Comedy, Cosmic Bowling,

“Feeding the Hungry”, and a Sunrise Swim!

Yes, we are a little crazy when it comes to planning a night with high school students where we stay out ALL NIGHT in Chicago. However, on Friday Aug. 15th we did just that! 16 high school youth, along with a few off-balanced leaders, started the night with comedy for Comedy Sportz, then moved on to Cosmic Bowling, Food Shopping, Breakfast, and a Sunrise swim at Montrose Beach! We we’re back in our beds by 8:30AM Satur-day.

You might ask… What in the world were we doing

food shopping at 4a.m.?

Amid all the fun we thought it would be good to remember all those who were out on the streets all night long, and without homes –not by choice but be-cause that’s what their life had dealt them. We received profiles of poverty based families who were on a bud-get trying to feed their kids. We then went to JEWEL, had a Food Scaven-ger Hunt, and collected and bought over $300 worth of food. When we got home early Saturday morning, [David] took that food (because he wanted the rest of us to go to sleep) and donated it to the food pantry at Hinsdale Community Service. - All in all, it was an incredible night of fun, outreach and care for others! Hope to see you next year!

Almost four years have gone by since I first had the opportunity to go on Work Tour. However, I did not seize that first opportunity due to prior commitments in sports. Not until this summer have I been able to go on a Work Tour. After what happened during those nine days in Swan Quarter, I regret not taking the chance to experience this earlier. I went into this trip only knowing my sis-ter because we both go to a different school. So, I have to admit the first bus ride was a little awkward because I did not really know anyone with the excep-tion of a couple people. Little did I know that these people would become some of my closest friends. I find it amazing how you can spend only nine days with some people and you feel like you know everything about them.

Not only was I affected by the friendships formed within the youth group, but I also formed bonds with members of the community. As far as the people there in Swan Quarter, they were nothing but hospitable and always greeted us with open arms. I remember visiting a nursing home and talking with a woman who was a retired teacher and she had so many stories for me. It was really quite interesting to hear what she had to say and despite the fact that she told me the same story four times. I still found it intriguing. This woman was just glad to have someone listen to what she had to say.

Another time in which I saw the face of the community was at Kids Club. We only met these kids for two days but I already felt a connection to them and I was glad to see smiles on their faces because it seemed like they had been through a lot. One moment in particular that I remember, happened during the last day of Kids Club. We had them participate in a Kids Club Olympics with games, awards, and ceremonies. The thing I remember most is when the kids received their medals. We called each kid up onto a little podium and put a medal around their neck and their smiles just melted your heart. This experi-ence alone completely changed the way that I view life. These kids really do not have that much in their lives and to see them smile like that made my entire trip. So after all this I would just like to thank everyone for making this possible and opening my eyes up to God's creations.

Thanks, Matt Davis
