September 5, 2010 A Publication of The Union Church of Hinsdale, U.C.C. Volume 42, Issue 16
All summer we have been looking over our shoulder at the legacy of faith “For Which We Stand.” If you missed this brief history of Union Church that was in the bulletin weekly, you can get a copy of the series in the Gathering Place. As we move forward into a new Classic Worship service at 9:00 a.m. and a Fresh, Experiential Worship at 10:30 a.m., we took the time to remember who we have been as we imagine who we will yet become as a church. Those who have been captivated by some of the stories from our history have noted with me that the 150th anniversary of the Union Church of Hinsdale is coming in 2016, just five years away. I hope Executive Council will
appoint a 150th Anniversary Committee to begin preparation for this epic event. My dream is that we begin to interview members of our church about how their life has been changed in faith through this place. I am particularly interested in video taping our most senior members so that their stories can be incorporated into a 150th Anniversary Technology piece about Union Church. As we celebrated our history as a church this past summer, as we plant seeds for all that is yet to come, we enter this fall season in this moment thrilled with the opportunities we share right now. On Labor Day weekend, Thom will lead a service of remembrance and gratitude for our current worship, in preparation for the new program that begins September 12. Please make note that inside this Good News is information about the new fellowship, worship, Sunday School and adult education offerings. There is also more information available on our website: http://UCHinsdale.org Many have asked if what we are doing this fall will be any good?
This question always baffles me. Worship isn’t a show or a performance, it cannot be measured by MTV or iTunes, it won’t be entertaining or comedic although we will certainly laugh and enjoy ourselves. Effective worship is measured by how lives change, how God is praised, and by the open heart and spirit of each one of you in the pews, who seek to know God and serve God in all ways. We will invite one another to listen for the promises of God in our life, and to commit to fresh ways to live God’s promises in daily life. If someone asks you how things are going at Union Church, I hope you’ll respond “We’re Living the Dream.” Faithful worship, Christian Formation, Mission and Outreach become the tools in the hands of faith to equip us to live the dream of God’s intention for our lives. I can’t wait to experience what God has in store for us next. Are you ready to live the dream?

This Is Good News…
Spirit Hall has a beautiful face lift, thanks to a small group of people from the congregation and fathers of children in ECP. When the need for a fresh coat of paint was identified, volunteers stepped forward. Their efforts produced more than patching, painting, and a job accomplished. There was good conversation and connecting. Real community building happened - all with the backdrop of some great tunes. There is a group of preschoolers pretty proud to know that “my dad painted this room.” Now there are Union Church members who know each other a bit better. Now Spirit Hall is freshly ready to welcome preschoolers, Tai Chi classes, Spaghetti Dinner diners, and all who enjoy this space. May the spirit of service and fellowship that brightened this corner of Union Church spread to other corners.
Youth Update St. John UCC Mural Project-Over the past year or so, under the leadership of Bill Grimm the high school, youth through Mission Possible (youth Mission), have been working on restoring the back wall of St. John UCC in Rogers Park and painting a huge (20 foot tall and 80 foot long) mural to help them celebrate their 100th anniversary. Here is a small collage of our latest work. In October we will share the pictures from the entire project. Keep up the good work Bill (and thank you to all who have helped with this project). Celebrate the Fall Kick-Off for TNT (Middle School) and High School youth group on September 12th at Jer’s House (1423 North Taft, Berkeley, IL) with a little get together.
