Sometime in the spring semester – spring 2013 - we will start the actual renovation, demolition, work, and move forward,” said Mark Vargas, Director of the Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library. Although several matters are still in the process of being finalized, Vargas explained just what exactly would be put into the new area. “The general thing that will go in there is quiet study space for students. That’s a big request that we have – more quiet study space. The library will have a teaching lab and we will also have media services and a center for instructional design and technology – CIDAT. There will be a recording studio, editing rooms, a student media center, and an instructional design lab as well,” Vargas said. “The look will be completely different, opened-up – it’s going to look spectacular! We planned it very carefully to make sure it comes in on time.” According to Vargas, the money that is being used to fund such a huge project is coming directly from a grant the university received. “This does not cost the university anything. This is all grant money, so, no student tuition money is going into this. Several years ago, the university applied for and won a grant from the state and that’s what’s paid for the previous library renovations; it’ll pay for this as well.” The library has been using several of the rooms in the old art department on a temporary basis. A recording studio and teaching lab are currently in the space. However, both of those facilities will soon be highly upgraded because of the planned renovations. Vargas discussed the importance of students and faculty having up-to-date, high-quality facilities. “A twenty-first century university is high-tech, high-touch Pacelli Hall, one of Saint Xavier’s oldest dormitories, will be closed for the 2012-2013 year. Photo: The Xavierite page 3 PACELLI > page 3 LIBRARY > BY MACY ZAMUDIO NEWS CORRESPONDENT On July 23rd, Saint Xavier University’s resident students received an email stating that there would be changes to university housing for the 2012-13 academic year. Associate Dean of Students & Director of Residence Life Katy Thompson informed residents that Pacelli Hall, which housed both transfer and first-year students, would be closed for the duration of the school year. “During the economic recession of the last few years, we have seen a distinct trend of more full time first year students opting to commute to SXU rather than reside on campus,” said Thompson. Thompson states that while the number of first year students has been stable, the number of first year students opting to live on campus has continued to decline. The number of first year residents has dropped from 56 percent to 35 percent in the last year. In order to be more cost- efficient, the Office of Residence Life in coalition with the Enrollment Management staff reviewed the projected demand for housing and decided that closing Pacelli Hall for the academic year would be the most feasible option. Students that were assigned rooms in Pacelli Hall were reassigned to other buildings. First year students were consolidated into Regina Hall. Thompson said, “This allows us to focus on developing a vibrant first year community of residents in Regina Hall.” Resident Assistant (RA) in Regina Hall and junior biology secondary education major Timothy Strong said, “It’s awesome to have all the first years in one hall. I hope more students decide to live on campus.” Upperclassmen transfer students were placed in rooms throughout the Quad Halls. “I think that putting the transfer students with people in their own age range or level is a good idea,” said Niaya Ellis, junior accounting major and commuter. “I used to live on campus until financial issues got in the way, but I think that this move is smart as a way to build community.” Less than five residents were reassigned to the Quad Halls and the eleven staff members that were originally contracted to live and work in Pacelli Hall were moved to either Regina Hall or the Quad Halls. This change of staffing created a need to divide the Quad Hall staff into two. The RA staff in the Quad has been separated into the McCarthy-Rubloff staff under Rae Joyce Baguilat and the O’Brien- Morris staff under Jason Ortiz. While the bedrooms on the upper levels of the building have been closed, the lounge in the hall is currently being used for classroom space. John Pelrine, vice-president of Student Affairs said, “I don’t think it will have a huge impact.” Pelrine stated that the university will gain some minor savings from the closing of Pacelli from the use of less utilities, but the building will be heated throughout the winter as the lounge area is being used for classroom space. While the university has put Pacelli Hall’s lounge to some use, some students have come up with other ideas to not only make use of the space but to attract more students to live on campus. “I don’t like that Pacelli is closed for the year because I feel like it can be used for some other purpose,” said Bianca Chalokwu, a resident and senior clinical psychology major. “It could be used for classes, storage, or as something like a guesthouse for residents who have guests staying over.” Other students feel that Pacelli Hall could be used as a student center or a recreation center. “Making Pacelli a rec center would keep people on campus or attract people to live on campus,” said Veronica Hill, a resident and junior business administration/ finance major. “This could be an option for residents instead of having to go out and find something to do on our own.” Since a trend of declining demand for on-campus living has been seen, the university is working to find ways to both increase demand as well as to take cost- effective action in the coming year. Considerations for ending leases with one or more of the university apartments (UA) has been brought up. “We will do that [collaborate with Enrollment Management to determine demand for housing]

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London con-cluded back on Aug. 12 after running from July 27. The Olympics featured a lot of memorable events that took place as well as some very exciting con-tests. There were 204 nations featured in this year’s games and there were a total of 10,820 ath-letes who participated in the events.

Swimming was very important for the Unit-ed States These events were highlighted by Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps, who had a great rivalry. Phelps became one of the most decorated Olympians in history after picking up some more hardware to improve his medal count to 22 overall. This looks as if it will be the end of the road for Phelps and what a way to go out for him.

Gabby Douglas became the first African-American gymnast to win the individual all-around champion as well as the first American gymnast to win gold in both of the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympic Games. The participants that also won gold for the US team competitions were: Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney.
