New research shows the averageBrit needs a holiday every 56 daysA SURVEY of 2,000 adults by Holiday Hypermarket revealedtiredness and stress take their toll just eight weeks afterreturning to work from a break.

The survey also found that most of us only manage to taketime off twice a year - often months apart, and more than halfsaid holding out for a holiday causes their productivity at workto suffer.

The company’s general manager, Kay Dixon, said: ‘’It’s nosurprise that we lose that ‘refreshed’ feeling so soon afterreturning from holiday. With such pressure to get back into thenormal routine it can feel like our time spent relaxing abroadwas just a dream.  But as the research shows, throwingourselves back into work too hard can mean we feel the needfor another holiday very quickly.

“Taking a day off here and there is sensible, but a regulartrip abroad can be more beneficial for both our mental well-being and our productivity when we return.’’

The research showed that being overtired was the mainculprit for constant getaway dreams, and more than a third ofthose surveyed said the main reason they book a holiday isfeeling they want to ‘live’ instead of existing for work.

A significant 77% believe it is unhealthy to go a whole yearwithout taking time off to go abroad, yet one in five admittedthey don’t stick to this themselves.

And it’s not just energy levels that suffer, as more than halffeel their motivation drops when they need a holiday, admittingtheir work isn’t at its best or they simply can’t be bothered todo things properly.

Tellingly, nearly two thirds rated their productivity at five outof ten or below before taking a holiday, whereas three quartersof adults rated it at eight or above when they return. Theresearch also revealed that a beach holiday is the mostdesirable type of break for more than four in ten adults, whilecity breaks and adventure trips are also popular.

Sense of humoursaves image ofBrits abroadTHE TRADITIONALstereotype of the sunburnt, tipsy British tourist –complete with questionablefootwear – prevailed inTravelzoo’s recent EuropeanTourist Stereotypes Survey. The company polled 2,400people across the UK,France, Germany and Spainto find out what each nationthought of its Europeancousins when they travelabroad.

British tourists weresingled out for their senseof humour and open-mindedness in the survey, but were also perceived asbeing the heaviest drinkerson holiday. Brits are alsoseen as being less generousthan other Europeannations, with almost half ofSpanish respondentsclaiming UK travellers arethe least generous whenabroad. with Eileen...At home

What has homeworker Eileen

been up to this month?

CAN IT really be September already? One minutewe’re looking forward to the summer and before weknow it, autumn is all too soon on the horizon. What

a great summer we’ve had though - it’s been amazing, hasn’t it? What I’ve enjoyed most is the lovely balmy nights- something we get all too rarely in the UK.

Travel Counsellors has been celebrating recently havingbeen awarded the prestigious 2014 Queen’s Award forEnterprise. Last week the official award presentation tookplace at our head office in Bolton and I was fortunate to beinvited along to join the celebrations. The award waspresented by Mr. Warren J Smith, the Lord Lieutenant ofGreater Manchester, who represented Her Majesty theQueen. The official speeches were followed by aChampagne reception; it was a very enjoyable afternoonand a proud day for everyone to receive recognition of thepart each individual has played in the success of thecompany in its 20th anniversary year.

The journey to Bolton entailed a nine-hour round-tripjourney from my home in Essex, so rather than travellingthere and back the same day and risk missing the mainevent due to travel delays, I decided to travel by train andstay over the night before. I stayed at the Midland Hotel inManchester which is a very good hotel in a very convenientcentral location and not far from the station - from there itwas just a short journey on to Bolton. Unfortunately, timedidn’t allow me to see too much of Manchester, but I’ll bereturning there again in November for our annualconference so I hope to see a bit more then.

There’s another award ceremony for me to attend nextweek, Travel Bulletin Star Awards evening at theLandmark Hotel in London. I am really looking forward toit as it’s always a great night with interesting and amusingcompany and excellent entertainment. There’s a bit of achange this year; instead of the usual formal black tiedress code, there is the option to come dressed as a rockor pop star. It should be fun, but I may have to (reluctantly)stick to more conventional attire as I’m not sure my TinaTurner outfit will be suitable to wear on my way up toLondon during the rush hour, do you?

I’LL NEVER forget my dad’s ‘fatherly’ advice as I walked outthe door for my first ever job interview back in the 80s – “Afirst impression can last a lifetime,” he said, before

adding, “Don’t screw it up!”

Nearly 30 years on and the cliché still holds its weight withregards to the digital world where we increasingly findourselves spending so much of our time, interest and money.

For travel agents, websites are often the first insightpotential holidaymakers will have of your business. They actas a shop front to everything you do and can make or breakwhether people stick around and buy your products andservices.

If your website isn’t appealing, isn’t user-friendly and doesn’tdraw the eye, then you’ll be turning people away. Remember, people tend to use search engines to find what they need andthey’ll then go quickly through the most relevant results, making comparisons between the various websites they find. Those comparisons can be based on many factors, but mainlythe design and site structure. Get it right and you’ll be thetoast of the travel agent community and a success in theonline sphere.

Moreover, with 30% of web users now using their mobiledevices, including tablets to browse online, the importance ofhaving not just a website, but a fully responsive mobilewebsite is absolutely critical if your brand is going to stayrelevant. Despite the growing evidence that the smartphonereigns supreme, many agents still find themselves strugglingto develop effective, user-friendly mobile sites. Making sureyour website is mobile enabled, accessible and user-friendlyacross all platforms is a critical first step in presenting astrong digital shop window to the world and ensuring apositive first impression. Once this has been undertaken, you’ll stand yourself in good stead in terms of attracting newclients and potentially increasing your revenue, whether

you’re a homeworker or High Street agent.

To underscore just how important we at The Global TravelGroup believe a sharp looking website is as a digital shopwindow to the world, over the next three months we’re goingto be running a competition for our agent partners to win afull scale website re-design, courtesy of our in housetechnology team, a prize worth upwards of £3,000.Open to all Global Travel Group members watch out for thelaunch....coming soon.

And to ensure each and every travel agent across the UK hasa shot at winning something, whether you’re a Global TravelGroup member or not, we’re also going to be running aseparate competition to encourage agents to re-think theirown physical shop windows and what sort of impression theypresent to the world.

Tweet us a photo of your spruced up or redesigned shopwindow to @GlobalHQ1 using the hashtag #TGTGshopwindow. If your pic receives more retweets or likes than anyone elsebefore the end of October then you’ll find yourself the ownerof the latest iPad.

Luckily for me, that day back in the 80s I heeded my father’sadvice and managed to present a confident andknowledgeable persona, landing my first ever gig in thetravel business. Remember – whether it’s a sloppy suit or asloppy site, first impressions count.

FAMILY THEME park Gulliver's hasjoined the UK's other top touristattractions to challenge governmentplans to shorten the school summerholidays.

Managing director, Julie Dalton, co-signed a letter to the SundayTelegraph opposing the DeregulationBill - in its final stages in the House ofLords - which plans to reduce thesummer break from six weeks to four.

The bill was the brainchild ofMichael Gove, but his successor NickyMorgan plans to uphold his plans.

Julie's signature on behalf ofGulliver's, which operates themeparks and attractions in Warrington,Matlock Bath and Milton Keynes, appeared alongside representativesfrom Blackpool Pleasure Beach,

Thorpe Park, Drayton Manor,Paulton's Park and a number of zoos, safari parks and play attractions.

The letter states: "Tourism is oneof Britain's biggest industries, worth£127billion a year, growing at 3.8% ayear and supporting 9.6% of allBritish jobs. The tourism industryrelies on the summer months for itssuccess. Many in the tourism industrysurvived the recession by the skin oftheir teeth. The economic harmprovided for within the Bill is deeplyworrying. We call on the Governmentto engage with the tourism industry, consult, and properly assess theimpact of this ill-conceivedlegislation."

Dalton said: "It's our understandingthat the bill will allow schools to

choose when they run their holidaysand there's pressure to reduce thelong summer holiday and increaseother breaks.

"A third of our business comes inthe summer holiday, it's our maintrading season and naturally we seeour busiest weeks then. It's familytime, the weather's good and we allwant to keep the kids active bygetting out and about together.

"Reducing the holidays will force usto reduce staff numbers which willhave a huge impact. We employ somany people locally.

“We'll always fight our way throughchallenges like this, but it will beharder for smaller attractions - so it'scrucial we join forces and make ourvoices heard."

A SIGNIFICANT rise in airlift from theUK is set to combine with a surge inhotel development to further fuel thesignificant rise in UK visitor numbersseen in recent years, according to theColombian tourism board, Proexport.

UK arrivals grew by 13.9% year-on-year between 2012 and 2013, from23,801 to 27,101 – double the overallmarket growth of 7%. With Proexportreporting that just under 7,000 hotelrooms will open in the country thisyear, plus the launch of two newflights launching from Heathrow, thecountry looks set for a UK-inspiredtourism boom.

TAP Portugal launched its newindirect service from London toBogotá via Lisbon in July, whileColombia’s national carrier, Avianca, launched its first direct scheduledservice between the two cities in thesame month. Both services operatefour times a week from Heathrow. With Avianca planning to introduce

787 Dreamliner aircraft on the routelater in the year, this represents asignificant increase in airlift.

Juliana Torres, acting director atProexport Colombia’s UK office, said:“With double-digit growth in UK visitornumbers in 2013, and an even biggerincrease forecast for 2014 and 2015,it’s clear that UK visitors are falling inlove with Colombia and ourpromotional campaigns such as‘Colombia is Magical Realism’ arereally starting to bear fruit.

“It’s also heartening to see that UKtravellers are becoming moreadventurous, staying longer andlooking beyond the major tourismcentres such as Cartagena andBogotá. This in turn is helping to fuelgrowth in centres such as Santa Martaand Medellín, as well as natural areassuch as Tayrona National Park and theAmazon region around Leticia."

Commenting on the 6,964 new hotelrooms expected to open in Colombia

this year, Torres noted that, by way ofcomparison, just 15,245 rooms openedover the entire period from 2004-12.The latest growth is being driven bymajor international chains such asStarwood, Hyatt, IHG Group, Radissonand Iberostar, with hotly anticipatedopenings including the W Bogota,InterContinental Cartagena, AutographBogotá and Marriott Medellin.

Recent openings include the 233-room Radisson Cartagena and the 170-room Cali Marriott, which both openedearlier this year.

Thanks in part to growth in marketssuch as the UK, Torres said Proexportwas well on track to surpass its targetof attracting four million visitors toColombia by the end of the year. Earlyindications are positive as the countrywelcomed more than half a millioninternational visitors (589,033) in thefirst quarter, according to the Ministryof Tourism - a 12% increase on thesame period the previous year.

KLM ROYAL Dutch Airlines is to expand its long-haul serviceto South America next year with a new scheduled service toColombia’s capital, Bogota, and Cali, the country’s third-largest city.

Pieter Elbers, the airline's chief operating officer and deputy

The service to Bogota and Cali will expand the number of thecarrier's Latin American destinations to 11.
