LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
With the announcement on Friday, September 21st, that our Holy Father, Pope Bene-dict XVI has appointed Bishop Kevin Vann as the 4th Bishop of Orange, our months of expectation and speculation are over and we now prepare for a new chapter in the rich and vibrant history of our Diocese.
As a priest for 38 years here in Orange County, I feel immeasurably blessed to have wit-nessed the establishment of this Diocese in June of 1976 and the appointment of our founding Bishop, William Johnson. Upon the death of Bishop Johnson, I was involved with planning the installation liturgy for our second bishop, Norman McFarland who subsequently appointed me as Rector of Holy Family Cathedral in 1988. With the retirement of Bishop McFarland, I was Rector of the Cathedral at the time of the appointment of our third bishop, Tod D. Brown. I was blessed to work closely with Bishop Brown as chair of the Council of Priests as well as a member of his college of consul-tors. It was Bishop Brown who appointed me as pastor of Mission San Juan Capistrano in July of 2003. I will always be grateful to Bishop Brown for his many kindnesses to me as he shepherded our local church during some extremely challenging times. The legacy of his episcopal stewardship will certainly be remem-bered in so many wonderful ways.
And now, a new chapter opens for us with the appointment of Bishop Vann. Having served for many years as a priest of Springfield, Illinois, in 2005 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Forth Worth in Texas. With both a sizable Hispanic and Vietnamese population together with a growing and vibrant Catholic Church he is well suited to take on this new chapter in his new diocese of Orange.
At the time of Bishop Vann’s appointment as the 4th Bishop of Orange, Bishop Brown was immediately ap-pointed “Apostolic Administrator” of the Diocese until the Installation of the new Bishop in the early part of December. The date of the Installation is yet to be finalized but will be announced as soon as it is. Since Bishop Brown functions as Apostolic Administrator, his name is retained in the Eucharistic Prayer until the formal installation of Bishop Vann.
During this time of transition let us keep both Bishop Brown in grateful prayer for his many years of faithful service and Bishop Vann as he prepares to take up the challenging and exciting responsibilities of our new Shepherd in Christ.
Beginning our new week in the Lord, let us commend to the loving mercy of our God all those who have recently gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they be at peace.

Wanted: Friendly, warm and welcoming persons to assist our parish deacons during the monthly baptism of infants. Time commitment: Four times a year on the third Sunday of the month from 2:15 to 4 PM (total of 8 hours a year). Pennies From Heaven
Pennies From Heaven Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28, 2012. The "Pennies from Heaven" donations help Respect Life Groups in Orange County including Birth Choice and To-by's House. This year, like last year, we will be using baby bottles to help in the collec-tion of donations. On Saturday and Sunday Octo-ber 20 and 21, a week before Pennies from Heav-en Weekend, we will pass out baby bottles (one baby bottle per family) after all the Saturday and Sunday Masses including the Spanish and Latin Masses. During the week, we are asking parishion-ers to put their donations of coins, cash or checks into the baby bottle and return it after all the Masses on Saturday or Sunday October 27 and 28, Pennies From Heaven Weekend. If you cannot re-turn them at that time, they can be returned to the Parish Office or Sacristy. Please return your bottle, as we will need them for next year’s pro-gram.

Would you be interested in helping to take Holy Communion to the sick and homebound in our parish? In service to the parish, do you have a sin-cere desire to bring Christ to those who cannot attend Mass on Sunday? Qualifications: Mature adult Catholic over the age of 21 who is fully initiat-ed (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) and is a registered member of the parish. You will be asked to be fingerprinted and you must complete training in “safe environment.” You will be required to at-tend training sessions in Eucharistic minis-try. Please prepare a written letter introducing yourself and explaining why you would like to be a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound. Mail your letter by October 1 to Rev. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA
Declaración de la Parroquia de la Misión
MENASJE DE LA SEMANA: Jesús, el Maestro, sigue trabajando a su grupo de seguidores y, además, lo hace manteniendo una actitud abierta, porque el Espíritu de Dios sopla donde quiere y no tiene fronteras. Elige a las personas, otorga sus dones y actúa libremente, siempre obrando el bien para construir el Reino de Dios. Por aquí nos encamina el mensaje de este domingo. Y aunque el exclu-sivismo y el escándalo son dos actitudes reinantes en nuestras relaciones so-ciales (es cuestión de mirar a nuestro entorno más próximo), la Palabra de Dios nos propone otra forma y estilo de vida muy diferentes. Cuando el exclusivismo se hace “en nombre de Dios”, se alcanza la cima del desvarío, porque se consideran los únicos portadores del Espíritu y ponen límites a la acción de Dios. Tanto la primera lectura como el evangelio nos plantea otro camino de actuación que nada tiene que ver con ciertas formas de exclusivismo. Jesús nos va a dejar también una sentencia muy severa para quienes producen y provocan el escán-dalo, y todo ello porque impiden que la vida de Dios llegue a las personas y situaciones concretas. Al con-trario, quien da de “beber un vaso de agua” (algo tan insignificante) no será echado en olvido, sino que la recompensa será segura. ¡Vaya lógica la que nos propone la Palabra de Dios! ¡Dichosos quienes se fían de la propuesta de Dios, porque su felicidad será plena!

Dios nuestro, que con tu perdón y tu misericordia, nos das la prueba más delicada de tu omnipotencia, apiádate de nosotros, pecadores, para que no desfa-llezcamos en la lucha por obtener el cielo que nos has prometido. Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
Con el anuncio del viernes, 21 de septiembre, donde el Santo Padre, Benedicto XVI nom-brando al Obispo Kevin Vann como el 4to Obispo de Orange, el tiempo de especulación ha terminado y ahora nos preparamos para un nuevo capítulo en la vibrante historia de nuestra Diócesis.
Como sacerdote por 38 años aquí en el condado de Orange, me siento inmensamente bendecido de haber presenciado la fundación de la Diócesis en junio de 1976 y del nom-bramiento de nuestro fundador, el Obispo William Johnson. Tras la muerte del Obispo Johnson, forme parte en la planificación de la instalación de la liturgia para nuestro segundo Obispo, Nor-man McFarland quien con posterioridad me asignó como rector de la Catedral de la Sagrada Familia en 1988. Tras el retiro del Obispo McFarland, siendo yo el rector de la Catedral, en ese tiempo, fue nombra-do el tercer obispo Tod D. Brown. Fui bendecido en trabajar muy de cerca con el Obispo Brown como Presidente del Consejo de Sacerdotes así como miembro de su Colegio de Consultores. Fue el Obispo Brown quien me asignó pastor de la Misión Basílica San Juan Capistrano en julio del 2003. Siempre estaré agradecido con el Obispo Brown por sus numerosas bendiciones conmigo mientras que guiaba nuestra igle-sia local atreves de tiempos extremadamente difíciles. El patrimonio de su administración episcopal, cierta-mente será recordado en formas maravillosas.
Y ahora, un nuevo capitulo se abre ante nosotros con el nombramiento del Obispo Vann. Habiendo presta-do tantos años de servicio como sacerdote en Springfield, Illinois, fue asignado en el 2005 como obispo coadjutor de Forth Worth, Texas. Con la considerable población de Hispanos y Vietnamitas junto con la creciente y vibrante Iglesia Católica él es la persona indicada para asumir este nuevo capitulo en su nueva Diócesis de Orange.
Al momento del nombramiento del Obispo Vann como el cuarto Obispo de Orange, el Obispo Brown fue inmediatamente nombrado “Administrador Apostólico” de la Diócesis hasta la instalación del nuevo Obispo a principios de diciembre. La fecha del nombramiento aún no se dicho sin embargo estaremos informando tan pronto sea efectiva. Como la función del Obispo Brown es de Administrador Apostólico, su nombre es mantenido en la oración Eucarística hasta el nombramiento formal del Obispo Vann.
Durante este periodo de transición mantengamos a ambos; el obispo Brown en oración de agradecimiento por sus numerosos años de fiel servicio y al Obispo Vann en su preparación para tomar la difícil y emocio-nante responsabilidad de nuestro nuevo Pastor en Cristo.
Al inicio de nuestra semana en Cristo, encomendemos a la amorosa misericordia de Dios a todos los que recientemente nos han precedido en la fe. Descansen en paz.

donde sus hijos empiezan a entender lo que significa pertenecer a una comunidad de fieles. La Igle-sia Católica cree que los padres de familia son los primeros educadores en la fe de sus hijos y que el papel de la parroquia es ayudarles y apoyarles.
Por lo tanto, les damos las gracias a todos los padres de familia que han dado prioridad a cultivar la fe en sus hijos por medio de la educación religiosa, además de darles también el ejemplo con sus vidas que es lo que realmente nuestros hijos/hijas ven día a día. Confiamos en Dios y da-mos gracias a nuestros catequistas por ser los instrumentos y apoyo para muchos padres de familia en esta ardua tarea. ¡Trabajemos juntos por el bienestar espiritual de nuestra niñez y juventud!

OCTUBRE ES EL MES DEDICADO AL RESPETO POR LA VIDA El Ministerio Respeto por la Vida tendrá unas mesas para información afuera de la Iglesia el fin de semana del 20 y 21 de octubre después de todas las misas parro-quiales. Ese fin de semana es reconocido como el domingo del Respeto por la Vida. También estarán distribuyendo los “biberones” para las donaciones de “Pennies from Heaven” (Monedas del cielo). Pedimos que cada familia lleve uno a casa, invite a sus hijos a participar ya que les estaremos enseñando a compartir y ser solidarios con la necesidad del prójimo. El fin de semana del 27 y 28 usted y su familia podrán traer las monedas que han guardado durante el año, ¡dónelas!
