Two bay-area guys that “grew up with each other” ended up bowling against each other for the $2,500 first place prize. Jeff Frankos (Daly City) worked his way up from earning the third seed to battle top-seeded Tony Reyes (San Bruno). And, bowling on con- ditions that Frankos’ friend, Kevin Harlin, stated were the “hardest he’d ever bowled on”, both Frankos and Reyes started this championship match with a split! Frankos then strung three strikes before Reyes had a chance. Reyes spared, had another split and then a spare and shot his three strikes. Missy Parkin, the first woman to win two PBA Regional Tour titles, and her new husband will reside in Fullerton, California. Belmonte Tops Rash To Win Korea Cup KOREA—Australia’s two- handed star, Jason Belmonte, defeated fellow Lumber Liq- uidators PBA Tour star Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., 210- 191, to win the Korean PBA’s 2010 Korea Cup and a prize of $25,750 (U.S. dollars) on Sept. 18. Rash won three straight stepladder matches to reach the title contest. He eliminated 13- time PBA Tour titlist Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., 239-194, in his first match and then dispatched Koreans, Cho Young Seon, 234-222, and Jung Tae Hwa, 239-223. The Korea Cup drew an international field of 204 play- ers, including 13 past and pres- ent PBA Tour exempt players, including Tim Mack (12th), Bill O’Neill (14th), Mike Fa- gan (16th), Pete Weber (17th), Ronnie Russell (22nd), Rhino Page (26th), Parker Bohn III (27th), Wes Malott (60th), Kelly Kulick (79th) and Mika Koivuniemi (106th). Liz Johnson Becomes First Woman to Win Peterson Classic CHICAGO — Chalk up another milestone for Woman Bowling Power: two-time PBA Women’s Series titlist Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., is the first woman to win the infamous Louis P. Petersen Classic in suburban Chicago. Johnson, the first woman to win a PBA regional title, and the first to appear on a PBA Tour television final, posted an eight-game total of 1,651 pins to win the 100th anniversary edition of what may be the most unusual tournament in bowling by three pins over Jeff Roche of Dearborn, Mich. The Petersen Classic was founded in 1921 at Archer- 35th Recreation on Chicago’s south side, and was one of the sport’s most prominent singles tournaments in its early years when it was often held twice a year (accounting for this year’s 100th edition). It is not- ed for nearly unplayable lane conditions that vary from lane to lane; pinsetters that mysteri- ously break down when a play- er is having a good game, etc. The Petersen Classic moved to AMF Hoffman Lanes in Hoff- man Estates when Archer-35th closed in 1994. Tony Reyes Wins West/Northwest Title in Red Bluff RED BLUFF — Former PBA Tour exempt player Tony Reyes of San Bruno, Calif., defeated Rob Edwards of Vancouver, Wash., 202-177, to win the PBA West/North- west Region Red Bluff Open at Lariat Bowl on Sept. 19. The title was Reyes’ second of the year in the region and the ninth of his career (he has one PBA Tour title). Reyes earned $2,000. ● In Austin, Texas, Tyler Jensen of Fort Worth denied Clint Dacy of Keller, Texas, his first PBA title, defeating Dacy, 257-206, to win the PBA Southwest Region Young and Pratt Austin Open and $2,300 at Dart Bowl on Sunday. The win was Jensen’s first of the year in the PBA Southwest and his seventh career title. Former PBA Tour com- petitor and 1992 U.S. Open champion Robert Lawrence of Del Valle, Texas, lost to Jens- en, 241-194, in the semifinal round. As a result of their top fin- ishes, Jensen and Dacy secured their top five positions on the Southwest Region point list to earn invitations to the year- ending PBA Regional Players Invitational event in Reno. PBA to Help Promote Crave Games’ New “Brunswick Pro Bowling”

Sponsorship agreement includes titled event, demonstrations during PBA World Series of Bowling

SEATTLE, Wash. (Sept. 28, 2010) – The Professional Bowl-ers Association and Crave Games have entered into a sponsor-ship agreement that will result in expanded visibility for the new video game Brunswick Pro Bowling on the PlayStation®3 com-puter entertainment system from Sony.

The latest edition of the Brunswick Pro Bowling video game is one of the most popular bowling games in the electronic en-tertainment industry, and the newest edition takes advantage of the latest advances in technology with the PlayStation®Move motion controller on the PlayStation®3 to make the game even more realistic for dedicated bowling fans.

The sponsorship agreement will include game demonstration booths for fans who attend the PBA World Series of Bowling, Oct. 24-Nov. 6, at South Point Casino, Hotel and Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev., and at five PBA regional tournament locations to be announced, along with titled sponsorship of the Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship which will air Nov. 28 on ESPN. A variety of other signage, on-air and online promotional exposures for the new game are included in the package.

The agreement also will include “competition” between Brunswick Pro Bowling spokesman Sean Rash – a Brunswick Pro Staff member and four-time PBA Tour champion - and PBA fans during the World Series of Bowling.

“Brunswick Pro Bowling brings to life all the fun and excite-ment of live action bowling by delivering a high-quality virtual experience that appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers,” said Crave Games Executive Vice President Betsi Gijanto. “With the addition of the new motion controller technology, this game brings together bowlers, gamers and families of all ages.”

“Brunswick Pro Bowling provides the perfect social activity and quality entertainment experience to audiences of all skill lev-els,” said Brunswick Bowling Director of Product Management Ron Addison. “Crave Games has really captured the authentic nature of Brunswick Bowling lanes and brings those lanes into the homes of the sport’s greatest fans.”

“The ability of Brunswick Pro Bowling players to select from different lane environments, play a variety of different games – such as league or tournament competition – and select cus-tomized equipment is not only fun, but will help educate play-ers about the whole experience PBA Tour players go through in actual competition,” added PBA CEO and Commissioner fred Schreyer. “It’s a great game, a great learning tool and the PBA is proud to partner with Crave Games in reaching out to our legions of fans.”

Pluhowsky & Kulick Claim Doubles Gold at Pabcon

Women’s ChampionshipsHENDERSON—After a frustrating singles performance at

the 2010 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women’s Cham-pionships, Team USA’s Shannon Pluhowsky was able to regroup and join singles bronze medalist kelly kulick in a record doubles effort Tuesday.

The accomplished left-hander shot 1,400 for her six games, while kulick contributed 1,380 to claim the gold medal with a 2,780 total at Sunset Station Hotel and Casino’s Strike Zone Bowling Center in suburban Las Vegas. The previous record was 2,621 by Guatemala’s Zussie de Machon and Sofia Granda at the 2009 PABCON Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Pluhowsky and kulick led by more than 100 pins after three games and battled through a tricky transition and a few ball changes to increase the margin of victory to 215 pins over their teammates, Shannon O’keefe and Tennelle Milligan, who grabbed the silver medal with a 2,565 total. Canada’s Caroline Lagrange and Isabelle Rioux took home the bronze with 2,562. Team USA’s Liz Johnson and Stefanie Nation finished seventh with 2,461.

“I got off to a good start today, and the pairs seemed to play more evenly from pair to pair and lane to lane,” said Pluhowsky, who finished 30th in singles with a 1,183 total Monday. “It was a different day and a different pattern, so I really couldn’t dwell on what happened yesterday. Since we’ll see the patterns again this week, all I can do is learn from each day and hope to get some more pins the next time. The more games you bowl, the more comfortable you get, and I’m happy with how today turned out.”

kulick got off to a slow start with a 182 game Tuesday morn-ing but averaged 239.6 for the remaining five games. Her per-formance also helped her into the all-events lead with 2,747 af-ter 12 games. Team USA’s Johnson is second with 2,678, while O’keefe is third with 2,648.

“It’s taking me a little bit longer to read the lanes in practice, and I’ve been slow out of the gate,” said kulick, who claimed the sixth gold medal of her PABCON Women’s Championships career. “Shannon bowled great today from the start, and having a partner who’s bowling well helps get your swing a little bit looser. Today, it was a new pattern and a new outlook, and I’m pleased with how everything came together for us.”

The 2010 PABCON Women’s Championships features 60 competitors from 13 countries competing for medals in six events - five-player team, trios, doubles, singles, all-events and Masters match play.

The bowlers will return to the lanes for six games of trios Wednesday beginning at noon Eastern.

The United States Bowling Congress will provide wire-to-wire live streaming coverage of the event on BOWL.com.

Morada Wins Match Game $795 at Oak Tree - Tony Morada didn’t bowl well at Oak Tree in game 3 a 117 game, but it was drawn by Teddy Villaroman for a nice $795 pot. Congrats to Tony he is well-deserving. He is congratulated by Gina Velarde ABTA Director.

Bryan Moore Beats the Heat!! Wins1st ABTA Title at Oak Tree (L–R) Greg Velarde 3rd, Gina ABTA Director, Champion Bryan Moore,$1,950 and Ted Villaroman (runner up) $500, and “Smooth Faye” Josefat ABTA Director.

Grieco 290 Award in ABTA - Better late than never as John Grieco finally picks up his Plaque for bowling a 11 in a row 290 game. Nice bowling by a great guy!

DIAMOND BAR—In our re-turn to Oak Tree Lanes we had a turnout of 122 bowlers on a very hot. And steamy day. Due to lower than normal turnout cut scores were a +31 for the men and +16 for the women. The three Super Seniors added to the board this week were John Grieco Sr (+28), Mike Bousquet (+26) for the men and Esther Tambio (+12) for the women. That would give us a total of 45 bowlers making it to the semi-finals this week. We had guaranteed 37 men and 7 women no matter how many bowled.

During our Qualifying squads, the top qualifier for the Men was William Garrett with a +117, and for the women it was Beth Borci with a + 50. Each will get paid entries into a future regular ABTA event. William, being the top seed would draw the Match Series worth $210 this week and he drew a 593, no one bowled that this week, so we will estimate $550 next week at Bowling Square. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this week, Mike Hase was the final person during the roll-off so he would go for the $1,300. He would miss on the first shot, so he gets a $50 consolation this week, and we will add another $100. We will go for $1,400 at Bowling Square Lanes this coming weekend.

In the doubles this week, we had a small turnout again, only 44 groups got into the doubles, with 8 spots paid out. The top prize this week went to Vuong Do and Wil-liam Garrett with a 1328 for $100. In 2nd place were Ginalynn and Greg Velarde at 1325 for $80. The

low to cash was 1278. In the semis we saw Ted Vil-

laroman lead the field with a +91 to sit out and bowl for the title. Behind Ted was Chae Kim at +82 who would sit out the first round. It took a +29 for the men and women combined, as we would take 4 women to make the semi-finals this week.

This week, our top seed Ted Villaroman had the honor of draw-ing the match game worth $795. He would draw a score of 117 and 1 bowler matched the score, and it is Tony Morada who bowled the winning score during our semi-finals. He would get $795 dollars for that 117. This is a new record for the lowest Match Game score and Tony doesn’t mind, he will l take that $795 :)) Congrats to a nice man Next week we will es-timate our pot at $1,500.

This week we had 5 new bowl-ers join us. Let’s welcome these new bowlers to the club, Mariya Toro, Clemente Guajardo, Linda Seto, Scott Miller and Gerry Chen, with Mr Guajardo being the only one to qualify or the semi-finals this week.

This would bring us to our Match Play finals now with 14 bowlers taking the floor in our top 16 finals this week. In the first round, the 7 losers were Beth Bor-ci, Leo Tartamella, Jason Jones, Eugene Haynes, John Armenia, Bennet Lai and Sonia Coronado. They would receive checks of $100 each. In the second round, the losers were Jessica Diso, Wil-son Cheung, Walter White and Scott Vasquez. Each would get

checks of $107.50, this would get us down to the final 4 bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $46 (Greg Velarde) to a high of $80 (Mark Andrews) depending on who would win. In this round we saw Mark Andrews (3rd seed) bowling Bryan Moore (15th seed) on lanes 3 and 4. In this match, Bryan would get the better of Mark in a close match that went down to the 10th frame with a 196 to 192 finish.

In the other match we saw Greg Velarde (12th seed) bowl-ing Chae kim (2nd seed) on lanes 11 and 12. In this match, Greg would get the better of Chae with a 263 to 226 final score. Mark and Chae would finish in 4th and 5th getting checks for $115 each. Our semi-final match was set to be bowled on 9 and 10, we had our 12th and 15th seeds into the top 16 bowling each other.

In our horses this week we would see Bryan paying $73 and Greg paying $46 if they win their match. In this match it started out close, and continued that way go-ing all the way to the 10th frame. Greg would get the first strike in the 10th frame, forcing Bryan to mark in the 10th to win this match. Bryan would and finish with a 245 to Greg’s 240 to win the match. Greg would finish in 3rd place for $200. This week the horse paid out $73 for all of you that bet on Bryan making all the way to the title match.

The title game is set and would be bowled on lanes 7 and 8 this week. There would be no taping of

the title match as our camera man was off this week, he will be back next week at Bowling Square. Ted being the top seed elected to start the match first. In this match, Ted would open with marks in the first 3 frames.

The same would go for Bryan, but in the 4th frame on a double he would throw a gutter ball and open the frame. But Ted would also open in the 4th thru 6th frames and Bryan would pick it back up in the 5th to throw a 3 bagger and pull away in this match. So Bryan would take home his 1st ABTA title, with a 201/240 to 164/203 score. Bryan would get $1,000 for first place, an additional $850 in the cash and carry and $100 bonus for wearing an ABTA Shirt, mak-ing his total $1,950. Ted would take home $500 for his 2nd place finish.

Champion Bryan Moore is from Artesia and used a Roto Grip drilled by Mike Wahl. He is married (30 years) to Marcy with 4 children (Crystal, Melissa, Ashley, Brandon) and 5 grand kids (Cameron, kevin, Landon, Deante and Anastasia). He thanks his wife and family, Bob for hold-ing a great tournament, Oak Tree, ABTA Staff and a special thank you to Debra (who was off this weekend bowling in Laughlin) and his brother Mike.

Ted Villaroman (2nd Place) is from Orange and used a Bruns-wick Siege drilled at Carter Bowl Pro Shop. Ted is married to Ofie and they have 1 daughter Tracy. He would like to thank his family and specially his wife. He would also like to thank his friends and the ABTA and staff.

Greg Velarde (3rd Place) is from West Covina and used a Hammer Plque drilled by Mike Wahl. He is married to Ginalynn (one of our fine directors) and they have 1 daughter keilana. He would like to thank his family, friends for their support, along with the ABTA and staff.

This week, the weekly ball sponsor winner of a 900 Global Ball was William Garrett (again, he must be lucky) and he won a Long Shot. Each time you bowl you get a free ticket for this prize given away by our Sponsor, 900 Global.

This week we were again sell-ing the raffle tickets for a chance at a raffle prizes. Winning a Regular Entry were Samson kong and Rey Josafat Sr, a 3 ball storm bag was Wilson Cheung. Winning a High End ball this week was Ginalynn Velarder. The rest of the results can be seen in the payoff sheet in this paper.

LAS VEGAS

TRAVEL LEAGUEBy Alice

MeglemreGARDEN GROVE- Monday

was the hottest day of the year but the Vegas league was not aware of it until after bowling when we left Valley View and almost melted away. John,GM) and Bob at the control desk welcomed us for our first visit and we enjoyed super air conditioning and free coffee. Also, the snack bar was open for good-ies and cold drinks.

Margo McClain fired 234-610 for the first 600 registered during the first three weeks of the league. She also inspired her team to post games of 638-736-705 for 2079. It’s a little early in the season to list high season marks, however, Margo’s team has three of them. We will wait a few more weeks before listing other season high marks. We can say Valley View #2 team tops standing alone with 8 wins and theres four tied at 6 wins for second.

Dee Phipps continued the indi-vidual high scoring with 207-558, followed by Doris Lewis 209-577, Barbara Robarge 209-545, Hedy Schoner 534, Joy Bennett 210-525, Nancy Soto 207-524, Donna Johnson 523, Teri Hefner 517, kathy Parrish 515, Linda kinney 510 and Roberta McNaught 509.

We missed Betty Phillips Monday but Barbara Bishop took care of business and says Betty will be back next week. We are sorry to learn Mary Deford was hospitalized recently but is home now, however, she may not be able to bowl for a few weeks and will require a sub. Hopefully, she will be back next month.

NEXT WEEk: Monday 10 a.m. October 4 at fountain Bowl in fountain Valley.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS by Connie Marchione

BOB JONES’ 244-870 TOPS DEAF TRAVEL AT JEWEL CITY, RIVERSIDE TRIO HITS 626 GLENDALE—After missing several years So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League returned to Jewel

City Bowl and found it changed with new telescores and much modern other changes. The new environment helped some of this league bowlers produce their best scores and only one of the 6 teams failed to crack the 2000 team series..

Bob Jones who last Thursday rolled 268/734 in his league at Canoga Park Bowl, topped a honor roll of more than half of the bowlers with 870 from games of 215-196-244-215. There was no other 800 as his teammate Bob Bergan followed him with one pin short 799 from 178-217-226-178 and league president Ed Abakumoff had a poor start of 150 and finished with a near triplicate 208+207+207 for 772.

Dennis Vigil was at his best closing with 192 for 728, Bob Taylor started with a 200 in his 721 for 4 games and League Vice President Sharon Caldwell had her best with 201-209 middle games for 715. Others on the roll list were Robert Audette with (198)710, Gardy Rodgers with 211-706, Pablo Yoma with 212-703 and Alfonso Ruelas with a 217.

While Jones’ 244 takes over the season high game, Riverside’s trio of Ruelas 217, Caldwell 201 and Abakumoff 208 produced 626 for the season team high game. Caldwell’s 715 got precedence over her 209 for the women’s season high series and Denise Burrows’s 178 took over as women’s season high game.

The League’s new Secretary-Treasurer Bob Taylor says, we want to give sincere thanks to the wonderful staff, namely Erin Guyette and Che Nanarro of Jewel City Bowl of Glendale for making this event enjoyable.

Next travel date is Sunday October 17 at AMF Cerritos Bowl in Cerritos.

GREAT 2009-2010 BOWLING SEASON FOR KEN DEGROFFMISSION HILLS—ken DeGroff emailed this writer that the 2009-10 bowling season was a

great one for him. Looking at his list of accomplishments, I cannot argue with that. ken bowled in three leagues that season, Wednesday Nite NBAC League at Mission Hills Bowl,

friday Nite Linda’s Vegas League at Jewel City Bowl and every other Sunday in the 50th Anni-versary So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League which traveled to 8 different centers. Besides rolling 5 perfectos and four 800s, ken’s other feats were.

In NBAC League he had the highest average for the 5th straight year including the 2009-10 winter season finish of 237 ave. and 2010 summer season of 225 ave. His team won the NBAC Championship for the 4th time including the 2009-10 season.

In Linda’s Vegas League he finished with the highest average twice including the 2009-10 win-ter season finish of 237 ave. and 2010 summer season finish of 236 ave. Ken’s team also won Linda’s Vegas League championship.

In the Deaf Traveling League that is scratch, although he broke the league’s 49 years 4 games series record twice, first with 1003 and later with 1030, Ken ran into problems in a couple strange centers he never bowled before. Nevertheless he finished at the top with 218 ave. but not as team champion in this one.

More satisfying was that during the 2010 year ken teamed with his friend Carl Malucci of Las Vegas in two major deaf tournaments and their teams won champion titles of the So. Nevada-California Deaf Bowling Association held at Cabazon, CA and 10th annual National Deaf Mixed Bowlers Association held at Henderson, NV.

Can anyone match that?

and to date in his adult career has had 14 Regional titles. Bill kamp of Vise Grips, who was at the event all weekend stated that frankos was “probably the best bowler on the west coast!”. On the horizon for frankos is the RPI (Resident Pro Invitational) in Reno coming up in December.

Although the number of entries was down this year (56), the event was blessed not only with a great prize fund of $8,760, but also with a serious contention of PBA Regional bowlers. Also gracing us with his presence the entire weekend was Len Nichol-son, better known as The Phantom, the originator of the internet radio bowling weekly show and long-time friend of the late Don Glover.

Not to be left out of all the action, former Glover Champions PJ Haggerty and Scott Norton both had their moments at this event. PJ Haggerty was the top qualifier in the “B” squad on Sat-urday with +60. In Sunday’s Finals he ended up second seed, but was eliminated by frankos who started their Step-Ladder match striking the first eight frames. Haggerty lost 192-253. Scott Nor-ton qualified in the “A” squad and returned Saturday night strug-gling at the start of the Semi-finals but worked his way up to -10 to make the Top 10 cut to return Sunday morning. Norton looked strong at the start of Match Play on Sunday morning but at the end of nine games he was barely hanging on to that Top 5 spot and had a bad match for Game 10 which eliminated him from the Top 5 Step-Ladder finals.

Results of the tournament were as follows: 1st – Jeff frankos, Daly City ($2,500); 2nd – Tony Reyes, San Bruno ($1,200); 3rd – PJ Haggerty, Roseville ($900); 4th – Dave Wodka, Chatsworth ($700); 5th – Steve Smith, San Diego ($500); 6th – Rod Tramp, Porterville ($450); 7th – Scott Norton, Costa Mesa ($400); 8th – Will Wilson, Anaheim ($375); 9th – Justin Laughlin, Visalia ($350); 10th -- Eric Grider, Bakersfield ($325); 11th – Jim Zim-merman, Tehachapi ($280); 12th – Rick Meneley, Santa Maria, ($270); 13th – Donald Benner, Palmdale ($260); 14th – Kevin Harlin, Milpitas ($250); 15th – Greg Thompson, Jr., Dublin (free 2011 Glover Masters entry); and 16th – Marvin Hale, San Jose (free 2011 Glover Masters entry).

5th annual Glover Masters Scratch Tournament will take place September 24-25, 2011. for tournament information, go to www.gesubc.org or contact Tom Smith at 661/333-0562.

SEATTLE, Wash. (Sept. 23, 2010) – Track, a member of the Ebonite International family of bowling balls, will team up with pba.com’s Xtra frame video streaming service on Thursday, Oct. 14, for a unique live, online introduc-tion of the newest member of Track’s high-performance bowling ball line.

Coverage of the intro-duction will begin at 8 p.m. (Eastern) and will include a live introduction of the ball, a product explanation by Track Brand Manager Paul figlio-meni, on-lane demonstrations by several bowlers including Track’s Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour staff members, and insight from Xtra frame co-hosts Mike Jakubowski and “The Bowling Doctor,” Jeff Mark. While Xtra frame is a

Track, Xtra Frame to Team Up for Unique New Ball Announcement Newest high performance ball to make

its debut “live” on pba.com video streaming servicesubscription-based service, the Track webcast will be avail-able to the general public at no cost between Oct. 14 and Oct. 17.

The Xtra frame session will feature a number of play-ers bowling with the new ball on a variety of lane conditions to demonstrate its performance capabilities and its versatility.

Track’s research and devel-opment engineers will discuss technical aspects of the ball along with drilling layout op-tions. Questions submitted via PBA’s and Track’s facebook and Twitter pages will be field-ed during the live webcast.

Also during the session, viewers will be encouraged to enter a special drawing for 10 of the new Track balls which will be given away, one per week, by Track following the

worldwide release of the ball on Nov. 10.

“We are very excited about this ball and this ball release,” figliomeni said. “Track bowl-ing has never done anything this extreme and to our knowl-edge nothing like this has ever been done before in our indus-try. This ball is unique, and we needed a unique way to intro-duce it; Xtra frame is a great way to do that.”

Track has also taken some unusual steps to release new balls in the past. In 2008, Track unveiled its “UpRising” ball during a party in the exclusive kingpin Suite at The Palms in Las Vegas, and a year later,

Track introduced a novel naming system for its products that lists a ball’s specifications and performance expectations on the side of each ball.
