FICS Interview ContInueD FROM PAGE 1...

FICS Interview-Audrey Yargui continued from page 1

What are your best memories of competing with FICS?First, the 2015 Balkan Open, Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the German doctors was residing with us to see how we managed the athletes. He congratulated us for our professionalism and since then they do not hesitate to send us their athletes, or to ask us our opinion on cases.

Second, the World Games, it was an honor to be chosen by so many chiropractors for this event! It was an incredible experience to work on different sports and adapt to the constraints of each to serve the best athletes. Take advantage of colleagues' experiences, make new contacts.

What other positions do you hold and why have you chosen to take on those positions? In 2010 I and a colleague were offered to join the Board of the French Association of Chiropractic. We said yes and have integrated commission communication. In 2011, I stopped the communication to represent the AFC in the institution that manages the fund for the continuing education of self-employed people in France. In the meantime, I became General Secretary of the AFC and since March have been in the role of Vice-President.

In 2016 some chiropractors expressed the desire to revive the chiropractic sports association. I joined the team as Vice-President and since November 2017 have been the President and Fabien Terrier the Vice President. I chose to invest more of my time than just being a member, because I think you have to be in the system to understand how it works in order to make it evolve. The notion of transmission is also important, to receive the knowledge of our elders, then to transmit to others, ensures the durability of the actions that we do for the profession.

What is the most important thing a new chiropractor should know if they want to get involved in sports?

The most important thing for me is to stay humble. It's not just a question of doing your job as a chiropractor. You have to be professional, to behave well, to present yourself well to the representatives of the medical team of the competition, to exchange information with them and the coaches. It all helps to change their opinions on chiropractic. It ensures that we have ambassadors among the athletes and the coaches. People who are going to talk about us, beyond the simple field of sport.

This implies an investment in time, money (travel, seminars, materials ...) which is the case in any field. If it's your thing, it's up to you to give yourself the means to reach your goals.

What’s the biggest challenge for chiropractic in France? What’s the solution to that challenge?

The biggest challenge for chiropractic sports in France, is to get passed the barrier of the medical teams of the sports federations. CFCS has members all over the country, we work from the local (thanks to the direct contacts of patients in the cabinets) to the most global (thanks to direct contacts of former sports chiropractors). For example, the CFCS has been working for 2 years with the French handball federation. In our first event we were there to look after the volunteers and then as we attended more events, the good feedback followed and now they allow us access to the teams. We are now in close contact with the European Women's Handball Cup.

Our rigor and our professionalism allow us to increase our visibility and our credibility in the French sport, from the most local to the most international. None of this is possible without motivated individuals committed to this adventure.

Nat Akmens (AUS), ChairI find it a great honour to serve FICS and the Membership Commission in the position of Chair. We truly have an excellent team from all corners of the world working together to grow sports chiropractic. My own involvement and journey within FICS started in 2014 as a member of the then newly formed Membership Comm-

ission, headed up by Dr Martin Isaksson. I moved into the Vice Chair role in 2015 and eventually became Chair in early 2017 with Martin focussing on his role as the FICS regional representative for Europe. During my time I have seen our commission grow and develop alongside FICS overall. I believe there are even more exciting times ahead for the organisation and for all our members and partners, with many key projects set to roll out soon in the short term.

I also currently serve as Vice Chair of the South Australian branch of Sports Chiropractic Australia (Australia’s NCSC). Our work here in South Australia, centred in/around Adelaide involves pursuing sports chiropractic opportunities with local sporting organisations/teams and partnering with SCA aligned events, which are growing in number year on year.

I graduated from Murdoch University, Perth, Australia in 2010 with a strong clinical interest in sports injury recovery and athletic performance. This has continued over the years, allowing me to take on the role of sports chiropractor for various sporting teams and events. I gained my ICCSP certification in 2017 and aim to volunteer at FICS international events in the not too distant future. Currently I am in private practice in Adelaide, South Australia, working in a multidisciplinary clinic with an emphasis on the sporting community.

FICS Welcomes Allistar TwiggGeneral Counsel - Sports Specialist

FICS is fortunate to have acquired the services of Allistar who comes to the position of part-time General Counsel for FICS with over 35 years’ experience as barrister and solicitor — in private practice, in government, and as in-house counsel in small and large (including listed) companies.

He now practices as a sports, commercial and litigation lawyer and understands all the important commercial, governance, regulatory, disciplinary and legal considerations, principles and drivers in sports and associated business, at all levels, from grass-roots to international, and in the allied health fields.

Allistar is familiar with every kind of dispute resolution, from litigation in judicial courts to the intricacies of administrative and private tribunals like the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He understands the complexities of legal and ethical structures and processes, and the regulatory requirements, both in Australia and around the world, regarding professionals and not-for-profit businesses, and how to deal with regulators.

He brings significant practical private sector and business (board, executive and in-house counsel) experience to FICS. Twenty years ago, he founded (along with two others) a successful IT security company 20 years ago, growing it to over 115 employees in just two years.

Allistar played a significant role in its transformation from small Australian start-up to successful US (Delaware) corporation. It was eventually sold to a large US company.

Allistar’s clients include sporting and associated organisations, including Australian state-level (provincial) sporting governing bodies, and Australian and overseas national and continental sporting federations. His individual clients include ordinary and high profile athletes and he advises about dispute resolution in both private tribunals and judicial court litigation.

As well, Allistar has crafted and polished the statutes and constitutions for many sporting organisations.

He is also aware of the differences between the Roman and British legal systems.

Finally, he is familiar with the body of sporting law that has emerged over the last 30 years, which over-arches FICS and its membership and operations.

FICS does not have an exclusive arrangement with Allistar which leaves him available to enter into separate commercial agreements with any federation, commercial business or not for profit that requires the services of a talented General Counsel. He can be reached at the following:

FICS Member Interview - Luke Khoury, Australia

12

Sports Chiropractic Educator, and Mover and ShakerDr. Luke Khoury, Sydney resident, practicing chiropractor and Vice President of Sports Chiropractic Australia.

FICS’ Dr. Jay Greenstein recently interviewed Luke on behalf of FICS on his involvement with the organisation and what the challenges he sees sports chiropractic faces.

Tell us about Sports Chiropractic Australia. “I was recently elected in as Vice President of Sports Chiropractic Australia (SCA). Their structure comprises a President, two Vice Presidents, a Financial Officer and a Secretary, plus all the members.”

“I am really excited to be a part of SCA as where Sports Chiropractic is going is really exciting. I'm pretty sure it would be much the same in the States, but our profession is evolving as it is for literature, and it's quite an exciting time. So, to be a part of it is really fun.”

What are the challenges and biggest opportunities are for Sports Chiropractic Australia?

“The biggest challenges I guess we face is public perception, if I could sum it up. We find that as the science evolves and as the literature evolves we as practitioners we become more educated, but the public is lacking in the education and understanding of what we do. So, we learn at a slow rate according to the literature, and you can imagine how the public perceives it.”

“When we're coming at it from a different perspective and saying, "Do you know what guys, it might not be a hands-on approach we need. We might have to look at a breathing dysfunction, or we might have to look at the neurology around it.” Trying to make that understandable for the general population is what I find is a challenge. Now, the perception in Australia is that chiropractic is still primarily to do with the spine. That's changing a lot, as well now.”

“I think that it is important that we do hang on to that perception, as well. But, as well, I think we should be looking a little bit more multi-model in our approach. We do treat the extremities. We don't only have to treat pain, we can treat performance, as well. We can help people out in many different aspects, as well.”

“I guess to sum it up in a word, perception would be the biggest challenge we're facing. Bringing it back into the profession, trying to combine different techniques and understandings, and understand that we maybe shouldn't be segregating ourselves from other practitioners due to their beliefs. Rather, we should have strength in diversity.”

“Trying to bring everyone back into a pool where we are all working together is a tough ask but it's exciting and presents opportunities.”

What is your view on perceptions and educating clients?

Dr. Greenstein said “the issue of perception is something that chiropractors have dealt with in the States for a really long time. I think a lot of the clinical practice guidelines that have come out recently by the American College of Physicians, in Annals of Internal Medicines and Lancet are helping to move the needle for us. But, I live in a clinical practice guidelines world and the operative term is knowledge translation. So, how do we translate the scientific knowledge to the providers and then, of course, how do we translate it so that patients can understand that many times we are the best and most evidenced based solution for their problems?”

Luke replied, “Definitely, you've nailed it for us. We run our practice a lot on education. A lot of initial consultation is based around how we can educate the client enough to make informed judgment on what's right for them. In a few of the talks I've given in the past, particularly around soft tissue techniques and manual techniques, and again if we go back to what the literature is suggesting at the moment with passive care, maybe passive care isn't as effective as what we once thought. Which is why everyone is going down the active road, which is fantastic for us because that’s how we work?”

“At the same time trying to translate that to the patient can obviously be quite hard because they want to come in and have the fix. How do we explain to them there is no quick fix? How do we explain to them we are actually facilitating change and giving their body the opportunity to make the correct change? Education for us is key and there are some days where we try to drive education more than the hands-on component because unless we get the patient understanding what is actually occurring in their body and even lower their fears around common misbeliefs with their injuries or with their symptoms, then we can start making change, whether it be passive or active care.”

Luke Khoury Interview continued...

Jay summed it up with fear avoidance being a big issue when taking care of patients who are in pain. Especially, chronic pain or especially with the athlete who needs to get back to action as quickly as possible and is concerned about their ability to perform at the highest level.

Chiropractic education and Luke’s involvement.

Luke explained that teaching fell into his lap when he first left university as he was offered a role to teach as a casual member at Macquarie University. He took that on and thoroughly enjoyed it which led him to teach at the university for about six years in orthopaedics, neurology, a little bit of sports medicine and rehab. After that, he started to see there was a trend, particularly in Australia, of an increasing dropout rate of really great young practitioners. He went on to say that “originally, when we spoke about these fears that people are coming out with, the perceptions. I found we were losing young practitioners because of fear of failure, frustrations working at certain practices. So, then I thought of Peter Garbutt, who was a mentor of mine.”

“I vividly remember having a conversation with him at a symposium and only a few words that he said triggered me to think if someone can influence you just by a few words, imagine creating a program for students, particularly up to their third year, to mentor them. So, we started off mentoring students and we started to do it in a larger group. And then what we started to find is everyone's got such individual needs that maybe we should just do more one-on-one. What we do in practice now is we have mentoring appointments for anybody who feels like they've hit a block (over and above our appointments for our population). So, we've got one-on-one courses. We also provide upper/lower extremity workshops. Primarily, around teaching people how to run a practice where you get the patient off the table and onto a gym floor and how to provide active care, as well.”

Luke went on to say “we do find in the education realm there are so many technique-based workshops out there, we try to steer clear of techniques. Yes, we include some of them in our workshops and we always give reference to them, but I am finding more and more, and this is just my personal belief and I've been known to get on a soapbox, but there's so many techniques out there creating such a closed system that it hinders clinical practice. So, in our workshops what we tend to drive is how do we approach a patient and their issue with logic. Our workshops primarily look at pain, trying to get somebody out of pain.”

“Not going down pain science too much but having a look at how we do it in practice. Then how do we implement a program if someone's coming in without pain. Where do we start from a performance aspect? How do we then put

it into a certain category to say we need to look at technique, loading capacity, fundamental movement, etc, that's what our workshops are based around. In the future, people will see more upper/lower extremity workshops. We are going to fine tune it a little bit more for practitioners versus coaches and trainers.”

We do a lot of work with CrossFit coaches in Australia. We do speak a common language; however, it would be more beneficial if we ran workshops for hands-on practitioners and diagnostic practitioners and then coaches/trainers. So, that's what's coming up.”

How can people learn more about these courses? Where can they find this information?

A lot of our information now is now distributed through social media, @kcsportschiro, on Instagram and our Facebook page KC The Sports Chiropractor as well. That's where we generally put a lot of our workshops. And tour website, which is www.kcsportschiro.com.

How do you think the evolution of sports chiropractic will take place in Australia?

Jay asked Luke whether Chiropractors have a working relationship with athletic trainers, and whether that was even a profession in Australia. He explained that in the States the athletic trainers, especially as it relates to sports teams, are the gatekeepers. “So, what’s is it like in Australia and what do you see happening over the next five years?”

Luke said that “generally, what we're finding is it's hard for sports chiropractors or chiropractors to be involved in large national sporting teams. We have had some chiropractors go to the Olympics, which is fantastic. But what I see is happening more and more is that more chiropractors are becoming involved at the local and state level, as well.”

“We do have athletic trainers; we've got a lot of strength and conditioning coaches, as well, at all different levels. And you're right, they are the gatekeepers. A lot of athletes will listen to their coaches and the coaches are the driver for the health practitioner, as well.”

“Whenever we start to treat any type of athlete it's important that we keep communication up with the coach, skills-based coach, athletic trainer, S&C, everyone involved. I think where you'll see sports chiropractic go in Australia is the more we can get involved with the athletic trainers, the more we'll start getting our hands on a lot more patients. We will then see the benefits and athletes will see it as well until it almost can't be argued that there is a benefit to have a sports chiropractor as a part of their team. We've seen similar things in the States. Mike Leahy A.R.T. speaks of a common story with the Broncos. Started to treat one or two and then eventually got into the team and most in the US know how that story goes.”

“I'm optimistic that it will be much the same for us in Australia and everything looks to be moving in the right direction. There are also great opportunities, particularly in specific sports. I'm not sure how it is in the States, but CrossFit in Australia has really taken to chiropractic, particularly sports chiropractic, which is fantastic. We've also created affiliations with a lot of CrossFit competitions, triathlons and other sporting events throughout Australia.”

“This year in Australia, we've got one of the largest events, which is the World Surf Life Saving Championships in Adelaide, where there will be over 5000 participants. The great thing is Sports Chiropractic Australia will be the primary provider for that event. So, that's the way that we are getting in. There's a lot more acceptance in what we're doing and it's because of the change in perception, hopefully, that we're doing at an individual level and then at the association level, as well.

Luke Khoury Interview continued... Kaila Alvarez, Student Interview

FICS Student Liaison-A Personal AccountKaila Alvarez, Minnesota, Northwestern Health Sciences student, FICS Student Liaison, and future Doctor of Chiropractic.

FICS’ Dr. Jay Greenstein recently interviewed Kaila Alvarez on behalf of FICS on her rise from student to FICS Student Liaison so we could get an insider’s view on what makes her tick and why she chose the path she did.

Kaila the StudentAt the time of interview Kaila was on a break between terms at Northwestern University of Health Sciences so was enjoying some well-earned down time. To provide an insight into the drive and enthusiasm behind this astonishing young individual, Kaila started the FICS group on the Northwestern campus about a year ago on top of her studies and off her own back. She is now the American Student representative for FICS.

Kaila also likes to involve herself in extracurricular activities and in her own words “is super excited with the number of sports chiropractic events going on at the moment in the US.” One event in particular that she is excited about is the ACA Sports Council Symposium that is planned to be held in Minneapolis in October.

The Integrative ModelKaila started the Student FICS group at Northwestern about a year ago and explained to Jay that they do a lot more with integrative and international sports. She said “it is exciting that as sports are starting to grow they are starting to get a lot more medical teams involved. Its super cool to do work with the other disciplines on campus, to start getting to be little pieces of a medical team as students.”

When asked about working with other health care providers and her experiences Kaila said “at present at Northwestern Health Sciences they have an acupuncture program, a massage program, as well as a lot of pre-med students doing some course they want to catch up on before they go into med school. So we try to do stuff with each of these different disciplines that are right there on campus.”

15

Kaila explained that they try to have an integrative case breakdown about once a month depending on how things are going. They get as many disciplines as they can come along for a meeting and attack a particular case from different angles. This involves the chiro students explaining how they would treat the specific case, and then having the acupuncture students, for example, explaining what they would do, or this is what they are looking for. They do this for each of the disciplines and then look at how they can work together to give the patient the best care because they deserve it. The objective is to give the best care that they can all possibly give to the patient.

How did you get involved with FICS?

“In high school I played three different sports so didn’t give school my full attention. In College I finally focused a little more on school and then when I first started chiropractic school, the sports side really intrigued me. Essentially, I was coming into an environment where I could still be around "my people" so to speak. I actually got involved right away when I started school and I was fortunate enough to work in an integrative clinic that Northwestern actually has on campus. I got to see the flow of that, how that worked. I did a lot of front desk work, making sure that certain patients were getting to see the correct discipline or at the correct time so that other disciplines didn't fall behind.”

Kaila went on to say that “just to see the difference in the patients who came out with just one appointment versus those that came out with the necessary appointments they could have. They could do this as the clinic had acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and nutrition counseling, all in the one place.” She explained that there was just something different about the patients that came out that had a little bit of each discipline. Also seeing the interns chat with each other; this is what I have noticed that this patient had going on; I really nailed this part of them; I think if you do this, that would be really good was a positive experience. Just seeing people bounce ideas of each other made her really excited.

Kaila said “I knew a little bit about FICS at that point, but as a student I didn't really know what was possible for me to do. I knew they had conferences all over the world, and I was like, yeah right, am I going to be able to go and do something like that? So, I started some conversations and found out that FICS had a conference in Australia, Gold Coast. I decided I wanted to go as it fell between our break, so I wouldn't have to worry about taking time off school, taking time off from the clinic, or any of those sort of things, so it just kind of worked really well. I also got lucky enough

that my sister was studying abroad, an hour away from where this conference was.”

“So, for me, there was no reason not to go. I ended up going and meeting some of the docs there and talking with them. That's where I had started some conversations with Andy Strachan and he raised the idea of a student commission. They didn't really have one quite yet, but they were working on it, and if I would be interested in being a part of starting one and coming up with ideas and all that kind of fun stuff. It just kind of fell into place after that. Since then it has been slowly but surely coming along.”

How do people become involved?

Kaila is more than happy for people to get in touch with her via e-mail ([email protected]) or Facebook if they want to get involved as she struggled to try getting involved as a student. This was mainly to there being some aspects of communication that were missing and she doesn’t want other students to have the same struggles that she had trying to get involved.

Yet another quarter comes to a close in the bright world of FICS with so many things still to do to develop a strong sustain-

able base that will support the growth aspirations of FICS.

With the Strategic Plans locked down and presented to our members to inform them of where the organisation is heading and more importantly so they can see where we can work together for mutual benefit. The current activity in this space is creating the operations plans for each element of FICS so individuals have ownership of defined activities to be delivered in the 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 month windows. These are the activities that will bring the strategy into reality and mark FICS as the Thought Leaders in Sports Chiropractic. Once these are completed we can invest time in the Business Plan which will detail FICS future. It will describe what we plan to do and how we plan to do it. Once that is completed we will have the three main documents required to grow the organisation into what everyone desires it to be.

UPDATE FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

iMap, another of our important sponsors and preferred technology provider has been extremely busy migrating our current web site to a new more secure location. This has presented a number of challenges as the aging web site and ELS did not want to play well with the new infrastructure. iMap have been given approval to build the new ELS under contract and once completed we will commence on the new Web Site. The challenge for the organisation is the sourcing of funding for these unbudgeted items and we are working on those.

FICS is currently out to RFP for the renewal of our Administrative Service providers contract as the current providers contract term had expired. This will give FICS a chance to define the services we require for the future and provide clarity to the service provider on their service obligations and performance levels to be achieved. The whole process will be completed and the service provider contract signed by 01 Nov 2018.

The Executive elections were also held during this period and a formal notification of these positions has been made. The Commissions were also recruiting for new members and the Commission Selection committee is wrapping all these recommendations up and a notification will be provided on the organisational structure and incumbents in due course.

So it continues to be a busy time in FICS and I would like to thank all those members that have contributed to the business activities required to make FICS what it is today.

The last quarter also saw me achieve a milestone in that I held my first phone meeting from under the main guns of the USS Alabama. Yep, that is correct still doing FICS work while holidaying in the Southern states of the US while looking at an awesome piece of history. I am starting to see what it means to be a volunteer in FICS, the clock never stops.

I was also lucky in that I got to have dinner with Dr. John Downes and lunch with Tom Hyde while in the US. Two people that I hold in high regard for their willingness to provide advice where necessary, and for improving my knowledge on chiropractic and the history of FICS overall.

I hope I get similar opportunities in the future to meet more of the people that have helped shape FICS into what it is today.

This quarter has seen us complete the sponsorship agreement with Snedden Hall & Gallop who will provide FICS with its general counsel requirements. This is an important achievement as it means we have an organisation at our disposal to help us with a lot of the more complex legal issues when required.

Africa Regional Wrap Up

Chirosport South Africa had the opportunity to treat athletes at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships from 28 August to 3 September 2018. Located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, Nelson Mandela Bay first hosted an IRONMAN event in 2004 and has been the site of the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship since 2015. The world championship is the pinnacle event in the global IRONMAN 70.3 calendar.

The IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship event attracted more than 6,000 athletes from over 100 countries globally, who qualified at prior events globally. This event gives each athlete the chance to gauge themselves against the world’s best, at elite and age group levels.

Chirosport had 5 Sports Chiropractors working at the event expo from the 28th – 31st of August 2018 and roadside during the events on the 1st and 2nd of September 2018. This helped getting the athlete’s bodies ready for optimal performance when needed most.

Thank you to all the Doctors involved, you helped fly the flag for sports chiropractic at a global level. The Athletes are all starting to demand sports chiropractic care at events of this calibre.

On Sunday, the 22 July 2018, the University of Johannesburg’s Student Chiropractic Sports Council worked at the 702 Walk the Talk.

The 702 Walk the Talk is a major event that happens in Johannesburg every year. The walk starts and ends at Mark Park Sports Club in Emmarentia and attracts over 50,000 people. The participants walk a distance of 5, 8 or 15km.

702 Walk the Talk is one of the most exciting events in the UJ Sports Council calendar as it allows students to work with other medical professionals and thus giving the students greater exposure. Our team, which consisted of 14 chiropractic students and 2 Chirosport doctors, was stationed at the finish line of the walk. We worked alongside the EMC’s and Physiotherapists.

We treated 92 patients this year compared to 2017 where 87 patients were treated.

We wish the team of 2019 a successful term.

Katherine Barkman won back to back Sliver Medals in what is classically known as the Olympics of Ballet called the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, USA. Fresh from her win in the USA she headed towards Bulgaria for the Varna International Ballet Competition where she bagged another Silver Medal. The back to back competitions and heavy training load leading up to these events made it critical for Katherine to be at her best physically and mentally.

This interview with Katherine describes how Sports Chiropractic help her achieve her goals.

Brief Bio"I was born in New Jersey, USA but spent my childhood in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. I am currently a resident guest principal with Ballet Manila. Coached by Lisa Macuja-Elizalde I have recently won 2 silver medals at two of the world’s biggest International Ballet Competitions —the USA IBC and the Varna IBC. "

" arounD the WI had been based in Manila since 2015 but I am alsoorlD MIDDLE EAST traveling the world, performing in full-length ballets, galas, and festivals as a guest principal for different companies and ballet schools. I am grateful that I am able to share my joy through Dance and hope to positively influence lives through the beauty of movement and by leading a creatively inspired life."

Describe your journey to Ballet"My soul knew what it was born to do and at 2 years old I declared to my parents that I would, in fact, become a ballerina and dance onstage. My dream had never wavered since then. I did recreational ballet lessons until I was 14, which was when I began professional training with a Russian teacher in my hometown. At 16, I pursued dancing full time. Homeschooling myself at night and training all day. Similar to an Olympic athlete. It was difficult but it was my tenacity and dedication that eventually got me to the Philippines. "

How did you end up in the Philippines?"After seeking jobs at companies in Europe and Asia by sending my resume and video audition via email, I received a life changing response from the artistic director of Ballet Manila, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. She invited me to join the company and to dance principal and soloist parts right away. I have grown so much both as a person and as an artist after having worked so closely with Ms. Lisa.

How Chiropractic has helped you?I have been fortunate enough to not have had any major injuries. As a professional I had only suffered a torn calf ligament and a sprained ankle and the occasional bruised rib. My chronic issue however has always been my lower back. Due to the intensity of training and repetitive movements in ballet, I frequently experienced misaligned L4 and L5 area in my back as well as problems with my pelvis and neck. I became used to the pain however I couldn't rehearse and perform at my optimal level, feeling off balance and with certain muscular functions shutting down. Everything changed when I went to Intercare and met Dr. Camara. I started treatment about 3 months before my international ballet competitions. I attest that part of my success at those events was due to Dr. Martin, who kept my body healthy and in top condition throughout the rigorous daily training. I was rehearsing and training every day at full speed, quite literally! This treatment revolutionized my abilities. My balance improved, my speed improved, my turns became more consistent, my jumps were higher, my

I was awarded the silver medal at both events. Now I am able to live my dream of traveling the world as a ballerina while still having my home and coach here in Manila to train me and help me grow. I feel truly blessed at the love and joy that I have received here in the Philippines."

muscles stronger and ultra responsive. My system was at a point were I could feel myself sending signals to muscles to make millisecond corrections while in the peak of a movement. I have Dr. Martin and the Intercare team to thank for that. It was a collaboration of health where my opinions and feelings were always heard. "

AbstractThe World Federation of Chiropractic supports the involvement of chiropractors in public health initiatives, particularly as it relates to musculoskeletal health. Three topics within public health have been identified that call for a renewed professional focus. These include healthy aging; opioid misuse; and women’s, children’s, and adolescents’ health. The World Federation of Chiropractic aims to enable chiropractors to pro-actively participate in health promotion and prevention activities in these areas, through information dissemination and coordinated partnerships. Importantly, this work will align the chiropractic profession with the priorities of the World Health Organization. Successful engagement will support the role of chiropractors as valued partners within the broader healthcare system and contribute to the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve.

From March 30-April 8th the best in the curling world descended upon Las Vegas for the World Curling Championships. Favourites going into it were Canada, Sweden and Scotland and those looking to play spoiler included the United States, South Korea and Russia. Sweden, skipped by Niklas Edin lost to the United States in PyeongChang in February to capture the silver medal and was looking for a little redemption. The gold medal-winning American team was not here to compete, another rink was their representative, however, they made an all-star appearance at The Poolside Patch’ (a beer garden) one afternoon with medals in-tow.

My work involved helping out primarily the Swedish team, in particular the skip, who after years of high-level competitive curling, is dealing with the daily consequences of the grind on his body. Common to most of these curlers was suprapatellar pain on the knee that is flexed during the slide with rock delivery. They wouldn’t have pain with ADLs, but after a few ends of play would start to feel it. My care for this involved myofascial work, both by hand and instrument-assisted (FAKTR concepts).

The hamstring on this side was often more hypertonic than the other as well. Further care involved full-spine assessment and more myofascial work to rotator cuff muscles and wrist extensors on their rock-throwing side.

Perhaps unique to curling is the approachability of the sport’s best to their fans. English-speaking teams made appearances at The Patch for an interview with an MC and then autograph-signing with fans and mingling afterwards. And if there’s one thing curling fans know how to do, it’s party: The Patch was always busy with curling enthusiasts from several countries.

The Scots brought a piper, the Canadian fans always made their presence known and the Scandinavian supporters could be pretty vocal too. Las Vegas itself, while not a hotbed of curling, made for a great championship and an “easy draw” for volunteers.

Students from Palmer West care at the Tri Santa Cruz, 8/2018

It was another beautiful day in Santa Cruz California where participants from all over came to compete in the annual "Tri Santa Cruz." This triathlon caters to athletes of all abilities, from first time triathletes competing in Dip & Dash sprints, to Olympic distance aquathons. As the athletes crossed the finish line, Palmer West’s team was there cheer them on, and provide well-deserved chiropractic care and soft tissue treatments.

It was an extra special day for Palmer West, as we cheered on one of our own, Casey Campbell, who trained hard and competed in her first ever triathlon. She placed first in her age group and 9th overall. Casey is also Palmer West’s Sports Council Treasurer, and we couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments. We had a blast in Santa Cruz, cheering her and the other athletes on and can’t wait to do it again next year!
