This is it...your time to shine! A new PR or BQ, attempting your first marathon or half marathon, it doesn’t matter what has you toeing the start line. You’ve put in the miles, the sweat, the time away from fami- ly and friends. This is what you’ve worked for. This weekend is about you and your goals! We’re glad you decided to come run with us!

As you look at your program, this year’s poster and receive your Finisher’s Medal, you may notice a theme. Walking or running around Corning, it’s easy to see our Little Joe Tower rising above the trees. This beautiful landmark is an important part of the downtown, our glass making history, and the landscape of the City of Corning. When you see the tower on your run, know that the finish line is just a short distance away. You can read more about Little Joe and its history in this year’s program, and we hope it will add extra meaning to your medal.

Making certain that you have a safe and enjoyable weekend experience is our priority. It takes a team of dedicated volunteers and community partners to make Wineglass Weekend a success. We sincerely hope you enjoy what Corning and the Finger Lakes region has to offer and invite you to come back again to visit.

RACE STARTS – 8:00 AMWe again welcome CORELLE® as the Title Sponsor of the annual 5K held Wineglass Weekend. The Corelle 5K is a family-friendly event that gives runners of all ages and skill levels the chance to participate. All finishers will receive a custom medal featuring a CORELLE® Dinnerware pattern. Different CORELLE® designs are highlighted each year.

This year’s participants will receive a long-sleeved tee, and CORELLE® is once again making a special run of their popular 28 ounce bowl for 5K registrants only. Show your 5K bib at the Corningware, CORELLE® & More Store located near the Finish Line at 114 Pine Street in Corning to pick up your commemorative bowl.

The Wineglass Marathon is passionate not only about running, but about giving back to the community. In 2016, the Wineglass Marathon Scholarship Fund was established to give back to the communities that support our race and to foster a love of running in today’s young adults.

This year, six $1,000 scholarships were awarded to runners from three school districts, Bath, Campbell-Savona, and Corning-Painted Post, thanks in part to the generous donations from our registered runners. Recipients must be high school seniors and participate on the track team.

This year’s Wineglass Marathon Scholarship recipients are Bath: Jordan Cash-Rawleigh, Campbell-Savona: Sarah Woolaway, Corning-Painted Post: Marian Copper, Jessica Lawson, Emma Mason, and Emily Niu

After 30 years of working with Runner’s World, Bart Yasso has announced he will retire at the end of 2017. A longtime friend of the Wineglass Marathon, Yasso will join us this year as our Finish Line Announcer. We are thrilled to have him as our guest once again as we help him celebrate his career. Yasso, 60, has served as the magazine’s Chief Running Officer since 2007, traveling the world to inspire and educate runners of all levels. In his career, he has run with two presidents, competed in races on all seven continents, completed the 146-mile Badwater Ultramarathon (before the course was shortened to 135 miles), published a memoir titled My Life on the Run, and appeared at hundreds of races as a featured speaker.

He has been dubbed “The Mayor of Running,” and is credited with inventing the Yasso 800s, a widely used marathon training workout.

6

The Boston Marathon is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathons. We are delighted to have Boston Marathon race director, Dave McGillivray, join us this year as our special guest. Dave is not only a race director, but a philanthropist, motivational speaker, accomplished athlete, and father of five.

He has many notable career highlights:

• McGillivray has run the Boston Marathon each year since 1973. For 16 years he ran it with all the other runners and since he began working with the race in 1988 he has run the course afterward.

• Each year he runs his birthday age in miles. Starting when he was 12, he has not missed one yet. He was born on August 22, 1954 – you can do the math.

• McGillivray has logged more than 150,000 miles, most for charity, raising millions for worthy causes. He’s completed 129 marathons and competed in eight Hawaii Ironman Triathlons.

• McGillivray’s many endurance events for charity are legendary, including running 120 miles in 24 hours through 31 Massachusetts cities; an 86-story, 1,575-step run up the Empire State Building in 13 minutes and 27 seconds; and running, cycling and swimming 1,522 miles through six New England states while raising $55,000 for the Jimmy Fund.

Meet Dave at the Expo, at Saturday’s Pasta Buffet dinner or around town on Sunday.

The Little Joe Tower is the last remaining artifact of what was once a sprawling industrial complex now occupied by Corning Incorporated’s world headquarters. While no one knows exactly how the tower got its name, its place in Corning history is well known. In the late 1800s, Arthur Houghton, grandson of Corning Glass Works’ founder Amory Houghton, returned from a visit to England with an innovative idea to draw glass tubing vertically rather than the traditional horizontal technique. After Houghton was granted a patent for his work in 1897, the Little Joe Tower was built to begin the manufacturing of glass thermometer tubing using an updraw process. A triangular gob of glass with a tiny bubble blown into it was loaded near the bottom of the tower and then stretched up the entire 18-story height of the tower by a motor-controlled

pulley system. Once the glass cooled, it was cut into six-foot lengths and sold to thermometer manufacturers. Corning’s process transformed health care by providing the first mass-produced affordable thermometers for home use. Production ceased in 1973, but the Little Joe Tower still stands as a community monument recognizing an important chapter in Corning’s long history of innovation.
