ST. VINCENT de PAUL September 27 is the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Known as the Apostle of Charity, he devoted himself to serving the poor. Here at St. Mary, his work continues in our St. Vincent de Paul Society. Through this important parish aposto-late, we have helped thousands of families and individuals in the Alexandria area over the years, providing nearly $104,000 in assistance in the past fiscal year alone. A flyer in this bulletin includes details on the work of the Society, with information on how you can volunteer or donate. May God bless our SVDP volunteers and you for supporting them!
FATIMA ANNIVERSARY Our Fall Series begins on Thursday, September 28, with a talk on Fatima and the Fall of Communism at 7 p.m. in the parish Lyceum. Our speaker will be well-respected journalist Craig Turner, who will share the unmistakable connection between the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima in 1917 and the fall of communism in Europe more than 70 years later. The talk is sure to provide a greater awareness of the motherly help and protection Mary offers us through her powerful intercession. Looking ahead to next month, the Catholic Daughters will host a parish rosary and movie night on Friday, October 13, with a showing of The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima. Watch the bulletin and our website for details.
FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! Adults and children of all ages are invited to a night of square dancing fun at our school gym on Friday, September 29, hosted by the Catholic Daughters! Doors open at 6 p.m. with a dance lesson beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.stmaryoldtown.org/square-dancing. Food also will be available for purchase at the dance.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE 40 Days for Life begins on September 27, running through November 5, an opportunity to pray and fast for an end to abortion. I encourage you to sign up for the 40-day prayer vigil in front of the abortion clinic at 2839 Duke Street. St. Mary parishioners also will participate in the National Life Chain next Sunday, October 1, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., on Franconia Road near Key Middle School. See page 7 for details.
BOOKMARK OF ST. TERESA OF AVILA In these unsettling times – hurricanes, forest fires, earthquakes, societal divisions and global tensions – we would do well to reflect on the consoling words given to us in the Bookmark of St. Teresa of Avila:
Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing dismay you,
All things pass, God never changes. Patience attains all.
He who has God lacks nothing: God alone suffices.
WE WELCOME THROUGH BAPTISM: Nora Frances Dake, Finn Matthew Meyers
and Declan Michael Ripley
