Kenya Mission Appeal THANK YOU for your generous response to Fr. Ray’s appeal last weekend to partner with the Vincentians in their mission in Kenya. When final numbers are available, we will share them with you. If you did not have an opportunity to give last weekend, there are still some envelopes in the pews that you can drop in the collection or mail. For more information, fliers about the mission are still available at the entrances of the church or go to www.vincentian.org.

Blest Art Next weekend our parish will welcome Blest Art after all Masses. They will be offering hand-carved olive wood religious art from the Holy Land. Plan to stop after Mass and look at the beautiful nativity sets, crucifixes, statues, and rosaries which will be available for purchase. Each of these items is hand-made by a master carver in the Holy Land. The proceeds of your purchase will go back to support Catholic families in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. For your convenience, Blest Art accepts checks, cash, and credit cards. Visit Blest Art’s website at www.BlestArt.org to preview the art that will be available.

Blessing of Pets October 4th is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most popular saints in Church history. His connection with all of God’s creation has made him

the patron saint of the environment and animals. Traditionally, this has been a day to bless animals, so on Saturday, October 5th we will bless pets. Please bring your dogs, cats, and other pets to the courtyard in front of the office at 10:00 a.m. for a special blessing of pets.

The Worship Commission coordinates training for Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers/Greeters, and Sacristans, and plans the special liturgical celebrations throughout the year.

Currently, training for these ministries is scheduled on a one-on-one basis. If you are interested in learning more about the Worship Commission or in being trained as a minister or lector, please contact Genevieve Yavello at [email protected] or 773-610-6473.

The mission of the Communication Commission of St. Vincent de Paul Parish is to serve the pastor, parishioners, staff, and General Council by producing parish publications (print and online) and serving as a resource for media relations and program promotion.

The Communication Commission is adding to its ranks and looking for contributing writers for Vincent’s People (the parish’s online newsletter), as well as for print graphic designers. If you have experience in these specific fields or in marketing/communications in general, we could use your talents.

The Communication Commission meets the Second Sunday of every month. For further information please contact Amy Choate at [email protected].

The Special Events Commission serves the pastor, parishioners and staff as the focal point for community-building activities. We periodically assess existing and potential events and ensure that each event undertaken is successfully completed. We want these events to foster a vibrant parish community that engages a broad spectrum of parishioners, both to financially support the church and to build strong and deep community ties. For more information, please contact Kathy Bathurst at [email protected].

So I just finished reading Mathew Kelly’s book The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic. A friend loaned me her copy. She said she thought I’d enjoy it. She was right. I’ve read Kelly before, and a favorite Kelly theme — the notion that all of us should strive to become the best possible persons we are called to be — runs throughout this book just as I’ve seen it in some of his other works. In fact, Matthew Kelly is the inspiration behind the small sticky note tacked to my computer monitor at work. All it says is “Point B.” It’s where I’m trying to get to. My best self. I haven’t made it yet, but life’s a journey, you know? Anyway, in Dynamic Catholic, Kelly determines through his research that only a very small percentage (just under 7%) of registered Catholics account for 80% of the volunteer hours in a parish and for 80% of the parish’s financial contributions. Additionally, there’s an 80%+ overlap between these two groups. Who are these people, and what do they have in common? I don’t think I’m spilling too many beans if I give you Kelly’s high-level view. These folks have a daily commitment to prayer, they are continuous learners, they are generous, and they evangelize the love of God to others. The third point — generosity — comes to mind as I consider today’s readings. The message Jesus delivers is familiar to all of us. “No servant can serve two masters,” he says. “He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.” Where our hearts are, there will our treasures be. Or something like that. And I love the first reading about unscrupulous merchants who rob from God and the poor to profit themselves. As Amos tells us, “The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done.” Scripture tells us that God loves a cheerful giver, and giving in Church-talk means being generous with our time, talents, and resources. So…how are we doing? When I was a kid, my mom showed me the logbook of her Sunday contributions. She tracked them. Religiously. In truth, I found it a bit boastful of her, but fifty years later, along comes Matthew Kelly, and after asking his readers to take a self-assessment quiz on the generosity front, he says this about keeping track of our giving-ness: “Measurement creates awareness, awareness leads to intentionality, and intentionality drives behavior.” So maybe Mom wasn’t being boastful after all. Maybe she was keeping track of the dollars to build awareness, which led to her intentionality, which drove her behavior. Or maybe she was just trying to teach her son something about generosity that he couldn’t grasp at the time. “Mammon,” as I understand the term, encompasses money, property, and possessions. How much is enough? How much is too much? In his chapter on generosity, Kelly quotes Leo XIII: “Once necessity and propriety are taken care of, everything else belongs to the poor.” Kelly quotes Fulton Sheen, too: “Never measure your generosity by what you give, but rather by what you have left.” Hmmmm…

The mission of the Outreach Commission of St. Vincent de Paul Parish is to serve those in need in the St. Vincent de Paul Community through programs and services with dignity and respect. It is the vision of the Outreach Commis-sion to be a dynamic, highly visible ministry that models and fosters a fully engaged, so-cially responsible parish known for providing those in need with hope and self-esteem, in a safe, caring environment. The Outreach Commission has many vol-unteer opportunities available. Weekly, we need volunteers at the sandwich window, food pantry, and for sandwich making. Monthly, we need help preparing special meals and making hygiene kits for the homeless. Seasonally, pa-rishioners can participate in the holiday food drives, the Hunger Walk, the school supply drive, and the Christmas gift program. For more information, please contact Matt Doucet at 312-953-6436 or [email protected].

The mission of the Finance Commission of St. Vincent de Paul Parish is to serve the parishioners, pastor, and general council by promoting stewardship through time, talent, and treasure, assessing the financial state and direct-ing the financial progress of the Parish, estab-lishing the Parish budget, and communicating the financial state of the Parish. The vision of the Finance Commission is to be an informed, pro-active body that respon-sibly promotes financial well-being and growth in support of the mission of the parish. The activities of the Finance Commission of St. Vincent de Paul Parish are to establish and monitor the parish budget, and to promote stewardship The Finance Commission is currently looking for new members. Volunteers need to have been registered members of the parish for at least one year. Please contact Pat Unzicker at [email protected] or 312-925-5065 if you are interested.

The Respect Life Commission represents the essence of Catholic teaching that all life is sacred and precious to God at every stage, from conception to natural death. Respect Life Commission

Dear Parishioners, This week I have reflected much about the Good Shepherd, and being a good leader. This has been for many various reasons: I am taking an online leadership class at DePaul; there have been readings from St. Augustine on good pastors in our daily prayer; I have reflected on Pope Francis’ call to priests “to smell like their sheep” and share their lives; and our readings today speak obscurely about stewardship and leadership. Yet another reason is that I received word that Fr. Ray Van Dorpe, my provincial superior who was here last weekend speaking about the Kenyan Mission, recommended me to Cardinal George to be made pastor of St. Vincent’s, and the Cardinal approved. So now, I am a pastor, not an administrator. What does this mean? For the most part, nothing changes in terms of how I go about the day-to-day business of the parish, and most of you will not likely see any difference. But on a deeper level for me, there is a difference: now all of the words of Scripture and the tradition about good pastors and good shepherds apply to me in a different way. All priests at some level are called to be good shepherds, but now I have been entrusted to lead this parish: not just administratively, but spiritually. We have a wonderful faith community here at St. Vincent’s. Our Sunday masses are prayerful and beautiful. Our outreach to the poor and marginalized is a cornerstone of our parish. Our collaboration with DePaul helps us to be engaging and evangelizing in our community. There are many different interpretations of the parable of Jesus in today’s Gospel. However, I hear the call to be a good shepherd, a good leader, a good steward. In the first reading, the prophet Amos criticizes those who “trample upon the needy.” In context, Amos is directing his ire at the leaders of the people, both religious and secular, for ignoring God and justice. And the Gospel with its story of the steward who seeks to save himself is a call as well to be prudent with God’s call in our lives. Perhaps like the story of the Prodigal Son, the twist in the parable is the response of the master, who commends the steward for his prudence, not his dishonesty. Like the father who welcomes back his wayward son, this master is pleased at his servant’s ingenuity. It shows us a God who does not exact punishment, but one who is merciful and patient. In this interpretation, Jesus is the steward who eliminates our “debts” and sins to God. The task of pastor is to be a good steward, to live out the faith and journey with all those who seek to do the same. Like all of you, I am called by Christ to be faithful and loving, to follow his example of generosity and mercy. Yet I have been given the task of being a guide and leader; it is an honor and a privilege to be here and walk with you.

Ray’s request last weekend to support the Vincentian mission in Kenya. Thus far, we have raised over $3,000. If you have not yet made a contribution, there are still some envelopes in the pews that you can drop in the collection or mail, or you can make a donation online at www.vincentian.org.

Help First Book Distribute Over 400,000 New Books!

You can help bring new books to thousands of children in need! The First Book National Book Bank travels all over the country, from tiny towns in Kentucky to big cities on the west coast. This September/October we’ll be in the Chicago area and we’re looking for volunteers. Come help us distribute over 400,000 new books to programs serving children from low-income families locally and nationwide. Come see how fun, and easy, it is to give books to kids! Much of the help needed is physical labor, such as lifting, carrying and sorting boxes of books. We will also need help with less physical tasks, such as labeling boxes and assisting First Book staff. All volunteers will be on their feet during their shift. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and we encourage comfortable clothing that can get dirty. It’s smart to dress in layers — temperatures are unpredictable in the warehouse. After registering, volunteers will receive more information including location specifics and parking information. (If you’ve got questions, contact information is below.) Available shifts include: Mon., Sep. 30th: 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Tues., Oct. 1st: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and/or 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Wed., Oct. 2nd: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and/or 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Thurs., Oct. 3rd: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and/or 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

You are welcome to join us for one shift or the full day. First Book will provide snacks and water, and lunch for all volunteers serving the full day. We are seeking 20-25 volunteers per shift. Bring your friends, family and co-workers! Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and we ask that student groups come with chaperones. We really want to meet you. Tell us when you’re coming! To register for a shift, please contact Ronni McCoy from the First Book National Book Bank here: [email protected] or call us at 202-470-4261. First Book is a national non-profit organization that provides new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy — access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 100 million free and low-cost books in thousands of communities. For more information, please visit www.firstbook.org.

Did You Know? Did you know that our new sound system includes high quality speakers in

the foyers at each entrance of the church? Sometimes our youngest parishioners get hungry, restless, or simply bored and occasionally share their restlessness with those around them. We are blessed to have areas at each entrance where they can still see and hear what is going on without having to worry about anyone around them.

The Gift of Prayer

Did you know that you can request a weekday mass to be offered on behalf of

your loved ones? Sometimes people will have a mass intention reserved on the anniversary of a death or to support someone during a difficult time. Other times mass is offered in thanksgiving on a birthday or other celebration. If you would like to reserve a mass intention, please contact the Parish Office at 773-325-8610 or simply stop by.

Time Change for Sunday Night Mass New this year: Beginning this weekend on Sunday, September 22nd, the Sunday evening DePaul mass will take place at 8:30 p.m. instead of 9:30 p.m. All are welcome at this mass.

Baptism: All are welcome to inquire about our Baptismal program at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. We do encourage you to register your family as parishioners and become active in our community. Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) at the parish center to register for a Baptism preparation class. The classes are facilitated by our Deacon, Dean Vaeth, and are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born. Following class attendance and after your child is born, please contact Mary Jo to schedule a date for your baby’s Baptism. For baptized Catholics, the proper and valid form of celebrating the sacrament of marriage is within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent’s one needs to be registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. Weddings at St. Vincent’s are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week, or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary Jo Polark at the Office of the Pastor confirms all reservations for weddings.
