Trust I’m not sure when there has been a time that we have had such a prolonged fixation with the weather. Not counting hurricane-induced storms, I cannot remember a summer where we have experienced so much rain; and not only in southeastern Pennsylvania but up and down the east coast and even points west. Keeping the grass mowed has been a challenge. For farmers, making hay has been impossible, and fields have had so much rain that corn has started to turn yellow because of too much water. It’s the farmer in me that keeps me fixated on the weather, I just can’t help myself. “Weather can make you or break you,” as the saying goes. There is another saying that proclaims “you can talk about the weather but you can’t do anything about it.” Truer words were never spoken! I will take full responsibility for the bazaar weather. You see, back in May, I installed an irrigation system in my garden. The idea was to relieve Sharon of one less, time consuming task, while I was in Ghana. Needless to say we didn’t need it very often. During this monsoon, the name “Noah” was mentioned quite often and the idea of “ark construction” was on a lot of people’s mind. The story of Noah is perhaps the most well known of all Bible stories. You cannot go into a craft shop without seeing some reference to Noah, a dove, or the rainbow. The one take away for me when I think of the story is “trust.” The story of Noah is about a man doing something totally ridiculous simply because God asked him to. I know I am over simplifying the story, but when you boil the story down to its most minute particle, “trust” is the message. Faith is another word we use to talk about trust. I have faith in God. As New Testament believers we are called to have faith in Jesus, God incarnate. That faith will be tested from time to time; you may be in the midst of that testing this very day, but this is what I believe. God may have created the world but God does not control the world. The planet that we live on is alive and sometimes rain comes and sometimes it does not. Fires will burn out of control and if we are not careful we will get in the way. Volcanoes erupt, sea winds ravage the coast, and the blustery winter winds will blow. And all of the weather-related phenomena can also be used metaphorically to talk about life. But here, my beloved, is the bottom line; the dove will always, always, return with a branch of life in its beak and the rainbow will always, always be a sign of God’s promise. It is where I place my trust. To coin a phrase of my dear friend Ernest Ephriam, The God I worship is not a liar! Amen. I’m not sure when there has been a time that we have had such a prolonged fixation with the weather. Not counting hurricane-induced storms, I cannot remember a summer where we have experienced so much rain; and not only in southeastern Pennsylvania but up and down the east coast and even points west. Welcome Back to School!!! We are excited to have a wonderful start to a new year. We are all excited to return from our summer vacations. We have one/two day and three day classes for 3yr olds, 4 day and 5 day Pre-K classes, 2 year old playgroup, half day and full day Kindergarten, Advanced Pre-k, full day preschool, and extended care. We are thrilled with all the new children attending our school

and are very excited about our upcoming events.

I would like to present our wonderful staff for the year. Mrs. Mengel and Mrs. Walsh teach our 3 year old classes. Our Pre K teachers are Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Strange. Mrs. Keirstead is our Kindergarten and Advanced Pre-k teacher. Mrs. Bieber will be our coordinator for extended care. Our assistants are Mrs. Bieber, Mrs. Grasley, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. York, Mrs. Bungarz, Mrs. Parfet, and Mrs. Hoffman. Mrs. Mengel is our playgroup teacher. Mrs. Colleen Bungarz is our gym teacher. I myself, Ms. Peggy Brown am thrilled to back another year as director of the school. Mrs. Cindy Oesterle is our bookkeeper. We surround the children with love every day and we all look forward to getting to know all of our new students. In September we will be making many new friends and enjoying getting familiar with school. Both the Staff and the students are all excited about getting back to school. We will have a visit from Johnny Appleseed in September, and will enjoy tasting different colors of apples and learning about apples. What is your favorite color of apple……see if you agree with our students. We have a few openings left in our school. We provide Half and Full Day Kindergarten, Pre-K education for 4 and 5 year olds, 1, 2 and 3 day Three Year old Classes and a 2yr old playgroup. We provide all day school for parents or children that would prefer that option. We also offer an Extended Care program, which is for parents that work or have appointments and need care for their child beyond the normal school time. Our school year is starting soon and would love to have your children or grandchildren join our wonderful program. If you know of anyone that might be interested, please have them call the office at 610-944-5808 to get more information. Thank you. Respectfully submitted, Peggy Brown - School Director

Take Control of Your Health: Prevent Falls!

September 22 is “Fall Prevention Awareness Day”.

• Did you know that 25% of Americans over the age of 65 all every year?

• Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the Emergency Room for a fall!

Here are a few steps that you can take to prevent a fall:

• Exercise regularly to maintain balance, strength and flexibility.

• Talk to your health care provider about your risk for falls.

• Regularly review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist. Make sure side effects are not increasing your risk of a fall.

• Get your vision and hearing checked every year. Update your eye glasses.

• Keep your home safe. Remove tripping hazards, increase lighting, and install grab bars.

• Talk to your family members. Falls are not just a concern for seniors.

You can get more information at: https://www.ncoa.org/healthy-aging/falls-prevention/ ---Brought to you by the Health & Wellness Committee. Are you interested in participating in a CPR or First Aid class? The Health & Wellness Committee may be organizing classes this fall. If you are interested, please contact Cindy Rothenberger at 610-944-6466 or [email protected] Harvest Home 2018: St. Paul’s will be celebrating Harvest home on September 23, 2018 at 8:55 am and 10:25 am

services. Please send your canned goods with your child to Sunday School to be presented at the altar to the Glory of God and the Thankfulness of our Bounty. All #10 canned goods will be donated to Bethany Children’s Home and smaller canned goods will be donated to the Fleetwood Food Pantry. If you would like to attach a $1, $5 bill or more to your can, this money will be collected and sent to The Greater Berks Food Bank. The Food Bank can buy more with this money than we can. Thank you for your support.

Clean-up Buckets and Hygiene Kits Delivered: On a more serious note, flooding to the north and west of us has been very serious the past few weeks. Tremont, Pine Grove, and Hamburg were some of the hardest hit and unfortunately by more than one storm. In an effort to help with the recovery effort, St. Paul’s Missions Committee organized the assembly of 20 clean-up buckets and 24 hygiene kits. Jim and Leona Wright delivered them to Tower City on Monday, August 23. After their visit, the Wrights reported, “In our area we don't quite grasp the difficulties of having all roads blocked out of a town. We also don't understand the workings of flood waters coming off the mountains and flooding homes on those mountains. It's a whole different understanding of living in such an area. In conversations with folks both within and outside our church, these were the first heavy rains that impacted them since they have lived in their houses for 25+ years. One never knows when you become the victim of a natural disaster. Thus, we need to glorify God by helping each other!” Blessings, Pastor Pat

Gifts to the Church: As we approach the fall of 2018 it is time to begin planning for the Sunday morning gifts to the church for the coming year. These gifts include the Altar flowers, the bulletins, The Upper Room publication and special flower tributes. For 2019 the cost of the bulletins will be $35.00 per week and for The Upper Room booklet $60.00 per month both of which are payable to the church. The cost of the flowers is determined by and payable to the florist. We will continue to utilize the services of Tracey's Flowers in Fleetwood to supply the flowers for church on a Sunday morning. The church secretary, Samantha Wolf, will place the flower order with Tracey unless you, as the sponsor, choose to order the flowers from another florist. If you do choose another florist, please let Sammy know your wishes when she contacts you for the wording to be placed in the bulletins. The schedule of gifts for 2019 does not automatically carry over from the previous year; therefore, we will begin filling in 2019 Sundays in September, 2018. Please stop by the table in the narthex to sign up for the Sunday you wish to sponsor one of the weekly gifts. You may also contact Sharon Dreibelbis at 610-916-4848 to indicate your preference or obtain additional information.
