Safety By Dennis RobinsonAs spring approaches, Home Improvement Scams tend to rise. Note the tips below from the Baltimore County Police:Scam artists drive through neighborhoods looking for people in their yards. Home improvement scams often involve someone posing as a repairperson offering bargain prices on home repair. The National Association of Bunco Investigators (NABI) says watch for these telltale signs when a repairperson knocks on your door:• They drive an unmarked truck or van with an out-of-state license.• Legitimate home improvement companies seldom solicit door-to-door. They usually distribute fliers or make phone calls since it’s more cost effective.• The worker has no business ID, local address or phone number. Request ID so you can call the company for verification.• You are offered a “special price” if you sign that day. Contractors don’t pressure customers to sign a contract or job order immediately.• Beware of excuses like “We just finished a job around the corner and had extra materials we can offer you at a discount.” Professional companies don’t operate in that manner.• The worker asks for the money upfront or accepts only cash. Reputable contractors don’t ask for all the money up front. Customers pay one third first, another third midway through the job, and the rest when work is completed.• NEVER pay in cash. Using a check keeps a record of the transaction and provides identification of the person cashing the check.• No written estimates or contracts are offered. If you have no contract, you have no recourse if the job is faulty or never completed.• The worker has no references. Ask for references and ask around the neighborhood to see if anyone has contracted with them before.Scam artists also like to intimidate their prey. After a job is finished, usually with inferior materials and shoddy work, the customer is told they owe more money. When the customer objects, they are told the materials used were stolen and the police will be called if the higher price isn’t paid.Materials and workmanship used in scams are usually poor quality. Roof coating, according to NABI, might be whitewash, coating on the

Message to All Overlea Citizens By Carol StoverSpring is almost here, and Overlea has a lot to share that is new and exciting. Check out our beautiful new website at www.overlearocks.org! It has been redesigned thanks to talented board member Brent Ceryes, with organized spaces to house our community resources, social media, and our three annual signature events. Use this website as your source for all neighborhood information. Our next general community meeting happens Tuesday March 13th at 7 pm at the Natural History Society, where we will discuss upcoming board elections in June, updates to our OCA bylaws, and news of our summer events. Please attend and share your ideas and questions with us. Summer will kick off again with the Overlea ArtsFest on June 2nd, and the Overlea Farmers Market beginning its bi-weekly run the following week on June 9th. Come out and lend your support to these wonderful community treasures and enjoy some time with your neighbors. The dog park project in Burdick Park is moving forward and will begin this year. Spring programs are also beginning at Holt Park, Walther Gardens, Herring Run Native Plant Nursery, Rosedale Public Library, our local schools & churches, and our own Natural History Society. Every week there are dozens of fun family activities to enjoy in Overlea and our nearby communities. Find links to their complete schedules on our website and have a beautiful Spring!
