ROBERT VAN ALSTINE NAMED COHOES ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR

The Rotary Club of Cohoes named Robert W.

Van Alstine their 2016 Rotarian of the year. Bob served as Assistant Governor for District 7190

from 2013-2016, working closely with the District Governors to help Rotary clubs become more

On the club level, Bob served as President of the Cohoes Rotary from 2012-2013, Secretary in 2008-9 and 2010—11, and currently serves on the Cohoes Rotary Board of Directors. As club President Bob led the Cohoes Board of Directors through a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) to determine club goals and subsequently establish a realistic action plan. Under his leadership the Cohoes Rotary published its first Annual Report.

Now retired, Bob spent his 30-year professional career working for the Office of the New York State Comptroller: Division of Local Government Services (formerly Municipal Affairs). He served as Division Strategic Planning Coordinator, Director and Assistant Director of MIS, as well as served as project manager and working in application development.

Bob is the author of four books: Steadfast, a biography of Reverend Nicholas Van Alstine (1814-

1900); The Dorr and Van Alstine Families in Little Falls; The Dorr Family in the Shaping of America; The Comtois Family in the Shaping of America. Active in the Catholic Church, Bob was commissioned as a Lay Minister by Bishop Edward Scharfenberger in June 2016. SRC’S ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE A SUCCESS AGAIN

The Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club’s

2nd annual “School Supplies Drive” resulted in a multitude of items being collected for children in the Rensselaer City School District.

Initially, SRC members and their families donated a wide range of items ranging from backpacks to notebooks, pens, pencils, scientific calculators, 3-ring binders, dictionaries, flash drives, spiral subject notebooks and much more in July and early August, even though that is a typically difficult period to undertake projects because of the heavy vacation schedule.

Then, project coordinator Bill Dowd asked members to think about adding a “kids helping kids” component. Club member John Sawchuk, principal at Columbia High School in East Greenbush, stepped up to marshal a group of his students who enthusiastically pitched in.

By the close of the drive, more than 500 items were collected overall for high school and lower-elementary level students in the Rensselaer City School District where more than one-third of families live below the federal poverty level. Donations are packaged for individual students and distributed by the family service agency Circles of Mercy, with which the Southern Rensselaer County club frequently collaborates.

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, please contact Bill Dowd at [email protected] or at 238-1950.

Some of the donated items individually packed for students are pictured above.

The New RYLA Year is Almost upon Us!

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is designed to grow leadership skills in students who have untapped

leadership potential. Specifically, we are focusing on juniors in high school. Our program is not for the student who is already utilizing strong leadership skills or students who have no desire to develop such skills. It is for that student who you know would be a great leader if they had a little extra training.

Our program is still unique in the world. We meet one Saturday a month from September to March. Each

session is filled with a little lecture and a lot of activities. Our students are encouraged to try out their new found skills and report back what they’ve experienced. There’s nothing like it.

We need your help. Our first session starts on Saturday, September 17th. We’re looking for students and

sponsorships. The Program Guide and application can be found on our District Website or send a request to Nick George ([email protected]). Sponsorships cost $375 per student and we’re always looking for your help. Make checks to “Rotary District 7190 RYLA” and send to Nick at 416 Dean Road, Hudson Falls, NY 12839.
