CHAPTER MEETING - SEPTEMBER 9, 2015
STEWARDSHIP OF SMITHSONIAN
FACILITIES: Unique Conditions and
Extraordinary Measures Description: The program will provide a short overview of the variety of facility types in the Smithsonian’s collection of buildings and grounds, many of which present unique con-ditions that must be addressed during design, construction, renovation, and on-going stewardship. In turn, these unique conditions may generate requirements for extraordinary measures to be taken during construction activities, mainte-nance, and operations. The presentation will discuss in depth several examples of technological and logistical challenges faced in recent Smithsonian capital projects, such as:. • Protection of historic building fabric and/or contents during construction/renovation activities.• Window/Glass Restoration on Historic Landmarks and Iconic. • Site Protection and Security. • Maintenance and Operations challenges.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion, the participants will learn how… • Challenges for collections care and historic preservation efforts impact
decisions on the appearance and performance of replacement glazing. • Early planning establishes criteria for protecting artifacts during con-
struction both in place and off site. • Various methods to protect sites and property perimeters take into
account both intrusion as well as natural disaster mitigation. • The institution uses its technological and human resources to meet
maintenance and operational challenges to iconic buildings.

Dan Cammer, CSI, SET, ICCNFPA was officially founded in 1896. I give credit to Casey Cavanaugh
Grant, P.E., for his wonderful history article published in the NFPA Journal for the NFPA Centennial Celebration in 1996. Grant’s article is an enormous reflection on NFPA’s complicated growth, as well as a big tribute to all the individuals in the core of its existence. You can find it on the NFPA website at http://www.nfpa.org/about-nfpa/nfpa-overview/history-of-nfpa.
It’s simply called, History of NFPA. In the beginning, Casey writes “This is a story that focuses on two essentials of our universe: water and electricity…, and the common thread for these bedfellows is another essential of our universe: fire. I don’t mean the wonderful servant that serves us well, but rather the demonic flames that from time-to-time visit us as the destroyer of our property and assailant of our people.”
Sprinkler technology was coming of age. Electricity was certainly not without turmoil and disagreement either, even though Thomas Edison was one of the earliest pioneers of electrical safety. The story of the birth of the NFPA follows a trail of many individuals through a composite mixture of fire, water, and electricity. How can we ever pay proper homage to all the visionaries that worked to create the NFPA? It's an interesting story.

CSI'S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
EDITOR'S JOURNAL - NEW CSI CERTIFICATION RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS - PART 2
In the last newsletter issue I started to explain the new online process to renew my Construction Specifier Certification (CCS). This year we had to upload all our Professional Development Hours on the new CSI Portal. I had 30 days in which to do it, but after a month's supply of non-stop work deadlines, the last day to submit the information had arrived. The research to dig through my calendar, my notes from the educational sessions, the chapter meeting presentations, the region conference tours, and the webi-nars looked like it needed a week to accomplish before I could start uploading to the CSI Portal.
Fortunately, I am an Associate Member of the AIA, and I do record my member number on the form that is passed around at every educational event. I decided to see what I could find on the AIA website. After signing in to the website, the landing page had a link for viewing my AIA/CES Transcript. It had a filter to select the starting and ending dates of the credits I was looking for. I was surprised to see that I had accumulated 78 credit hours for the previous three years when only 24 credits hours were required. I took the option for printing the transcript as a PDF file. The only problem was that it would be time consuming just to input the minimum 24 credits. On a whim I reported one event of 78 hours and uploaded the PDF file of my AIA/CES Transcript as the certificate. The system accepted the upload and gave me a confirmation. All I had to do was to pay the fee online and get my receipt. Done. So far I haven't received a negative reply. All's well that ends well.--David Lorenzini
Mark Dorsey, FASAE, CAE, has been selected by CSI’s Board as the new Executive Director of CSI. Dorsey will join CSI’s staff at the organization’s headquarters in Alexan-dria, VA, at the beginning of September. Dorsey comes to CSI from the American Snowsports Education Association.
During his tenure as CEO, ASEA saw record membership growth during seven of the past eight years, record revenue, and award-winning communications and outreach programs. Dorsey said. “The only thing that excites me more than solving long-standing, intractable problems is building a commitment to excellence in the people around me. CSI is the perfect opportunity for me to use these skills to make a difference in the commercial construction industry." Welcome to CSI, Mark Dorsey.
