He checks his voice mail every day or two, and will call you to arrange to get together. You can also email him at [email protected]. If your need to speak with Rabbi Steve is of a more urgent nature, please call the office and they will reach him by cell phone.

THE HIGH HOLY DAYS, OR THE DAYS OF AWE The High Holy Days are the second major cycle of festivals in the Jewish year (after the “Pilgrimage” Festivals of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot). In its narrowest sense, the cycle is composed of Rosh HaShanah (the first two days of the lunar month of Tishrei) and Yom Kippur (Tishrei 10). Today this is a time of celebration of

the beginning of the new year (RH) and a striving for atonement of our misdeeds of the past year (YK), to begin the new year with a “clean slate”. The month before Rosh HaShanah, starting on the New Moon of Elul (8/15), Jews begin a month of spiritual preparation for this new beginning. It is a time for taking a personal accounting (cheshbon hanefesh) of our lives. How have we gotten off track of our goals? Where have we made mistakes? Who do we owe an apology to? It is said that we have 40 days from the beginning of Elul until Yom Kippur to make any amends we need to make with other people. Then on Yom Kippur we make amends with God. The ten days from (and including) Rosh HaShanah till Yom Kippur are known as “The Ten Days of Teshuvah” (or Repentance or Turning), or the “Days of Awe,” (Aseret Yemai Teshuvah, and Yamim Noraim in Hebrew.) These names better capture the mood of this time than the common “High Holy Days” or “High Holidays.” It is a very powerful and important time of annual personal and communal transformation. Services include the blowing of the ram’s horn or Shofar, with a total of 100 blasts. There are festive foods and meals on Rosh HaShanah, like apples and honey. Yom Kippur is a 25hr. period of mainly fasting and prayer, the wearing of white, and an intense process of atonement, or “at-one-ment.” Then we come out of the fast with a festive meal after sunset, and look forward to four

days later when we will relax and celebrate and share our abundance on Sukkot. (RH begins this year at sundown on Sunday Sept. 13. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sept. 22. Sukkot begins at sundown on Sept. 27.) Enhanced Kiddush Erev RH The fall Holy Days begin at sundown on Sunday Sept. 13. Since dinner is not served in the dining room on Sundays, candles will be lit in the Shul at the beginning of services, and there will be an ENHANCED kiddush with extra special food served after the service. Candles second night Candle lighting for second night of Rosh Hashanah will be resident led on Monday Sept. 14, 5:15 in the dining hall. Yiskor (yk and shmini) YISKOR/Memorial services happen four times a year, on Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover and Shavuot. Please note that this fall, Yiskor will be said on Yom Kippur, on September 23. Yiskor will also be said near the end of Sukkot, on Monday Oct. 5. (See Schedule).

From the Facilities Department

We have had several incidents where trash is being placed into the trash chutes without being bagged first. As a reminder, all trash going into the trash chutes must be bagged and tied. This is for sanitary reasons as well as to minimize the garbage odor. Recycle items such as newspaper, plastic, cardboard, glass, etc. should be taken down and placed in the recycle bin behind the buildings. Your cooperation is extremely appreciated by staff as well as your neighbors.

SENIORS’ RESOURCE CENTER

*First Ride has been replaced with Seniors’ Resource Center: SRC (Senior Resource Center) Transportation Call Center Phone: 303-235-6972 Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm

Rides may be requested for any purpose allowing riders to travel independently to medical/dental appointments, go grocery shopping, attend congregate noon meals, go to community based care programs, take personal trips such as to the beauty shop, for banking, visiting a friend, etc., (within 10 miles of the resident address). A rider can take three round trips per week with exceptions made for medical reasons. Donations are accepted for this service. A resident must be over the age of 60. Persons under 60 who have a mobility impairment can also request service. Try to make ride requests three business days in advance whenever possible. Shorter notice requests can be made including the day of the request (such as a medical follow-up) but it is a first call/first serve situation. Some trips that occur regularly (i.e. shopping, going to dialysis) can be placed into a subscription service so you don't need to

call each week. Advance notice helps build efficient routing since this is a shared ride system. Always remember to call SRC Transportation if you need to cancel your ride; this opens room for another rider.

Please have the following information ready when you make your call:

• Your name • Pick-up address • Drop off address • Time of the appointment • How long appointment will last • An emergency contact’s phone

number

New riders will receive a "new rider packet," usually within two weeks of a call. This packet includes important information, phone numbers, the latest rider Newsletter titled "Going Your Way" and donation envelopes to get you started with using this wonderful service. ATTENTION RESIDENTS: Are you a patient of Rose Family Medical Center or are you in need of or interested in getting a new doctor? Rose Hospital is our closest hospital and being a member of this practice will allow your doctor to communicate quickly to the hospital doctors. Rose Family Medicine will set aside the third Thursday of the month for our residents, so you should be assured of getting an appointment. They take both Medicare and Medicaid, along with many supplemental plans. And best of all, Kavod will provide transportation to the Thursday afternoon appointments for our residents for $3.00 round trip. Appointments can be set up through our front desk at 303-399-1146. If you have further questions about this new partnership, please call Mary Tolley at 720-382-7816 or Mila Rodionova at 720-382-7815 for information in Russian. Whether you’re new to Rose Family Medicine or already a patient you can sign-up at the front office.

Spotlight on Pets Meet Harley

The first comments about Harley were, “He doesn’t lead an exciting life; he is a couch potato; and he was a mistake.” A dog with many colored fur can be called a “Harlequin dog.” Hence the 10 week old pup of many colors was named Harley. A MISTAKE?!? A Colorado Springs breeder raises Shih Tzu and Pekingese, and never the twain shall meet. Harley’s mom and pop found a way to mate. In the breeders’ eyes: a huge mistake. Nine year old Harley came to Kavod with “person mom” Suzanne Callahan 2 ½ years ago. He was a perfect host for his interview. “Come in. This is my Harley Davidson shirt. I bite it, tug at it, chew it and carry it everywhere. I like walks, I like to fly too. These are my squeaky toys, squirrels are fun outside, I bark at motorcycles. I chew small rocks but don’t swallow them. I like people, kids, cats, dogs, just about everything except the back doors. One day that door caught my paw and hurt me! I don’t do the back doors. I spread-eagle all 4 legs flat on the floor. Thank you for my interview but I have to chew my shirt and check out the moose on T.V.”

Suzanne watches quietly with a look of love. She says, “He is amazing. My best friend in the whole world. He cuddles, keeps me moving, and I don’t know what I would do without him.” Harley, your mom and pop knew you weren’t a mistake. They produced a gift for Suzanne. That adds up to one huge success.

Would you be surprised to find that there is another way without using human donation? Or that the medical community is now in the final testing of an inexpensive tool to detect early Parkinson’s Disease in thirty seconds with 99 % accuracy rate. What about an app that brings diagnostic tools to a patient’s bedside? Or how about a needle free vaccine patch? As parents wouldn’t we all like a gel that stops bleeding instantly? And what about rethinking ways to replace joints? We will see a way to save thousands of lives for as little as $25.00. The rapid advances in medical technology is presented in language the laymen can understand and enjoy. Look forward to seeing you there! No Cost or deadline, just drop in
