LAWN FERTILZER - Due to members asking the Green Keeper about lawn fertilizer the club has FOR SALE 10kg bags for $25.00. Please see John and he will get this for you. NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2016 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT - With September here and the onset of daylight savings just around the corner, isn't it great to say goodbye to winter, and the conditions that it presents. The course will change from the tied winter look to the lush green of the new spring growth. Longer warmer evenings increase our time for golf, why not take this opportunity not only for yourself to play, but bring a friend and introduce them to our beautiful course. The vibrant feel of spring will replace the doom and gloom of winter which will reflect in the mood and happiness of us all. (With the exception of green keeping staff/club house manager who may be far to busy to stop and smile). Stu Beaton MID WEEK MEN - Our midweek program is moving along nicely and the trophy competitions completed on schedule. Two rounds of the Russ Cup Nett competition have been played so far and Peter Pinnock has scored well. There is one round to go. In the August Old Hickory at Waahi Taakaro our boys played well to finish second with a score of (142) to Greenacres (149), the next round is at Totaradale on Sept 1 so good luck men. Great to have both Brian Miller and John Nicholls back playing after their respective operations and both playing well. September is a busy golfing month and we have another Totaradale mixed Vets tournament on Thursday 15, entry form is out so please get your name on the list. Also this time of year trophies must be returned so please get your trophy back so it can be engraved for this year’s winner. Likewise it is time to have your say and nominate suitable members to run the midweek program. A list will be displayed on the notice board so please come forward and have someone nominate/second your willingness to participate. Regards Brian Wislang for the midweek committee.

9 HOLE LADIES - Spring is just around the corner. Yay! Although that dreadful

pollen has arrived early. The course still hasn’t had a chance to dry out due to the wet winter so hopefully we wont get a wet spring! Competitions are well under way and we have a couple of away tournaments coming up. Information on our notice board, ladies. Tasman challenged us last week for the Biddy Smith trophy and I'm pleased to report that we retained it ! well done team. The new floor looks great , thanks to all involved in that as we all benefit from any improvement within our club, Good golfing to all!

This months riddle is: Two fathers and two sons go fishing together. They each catch a fish to take home, they don’t lose any fish but when they get home they only have three! How can this happen?

Answer next month, answer to last months, An Egg!

18 HOLE LADIES - Hello Golfers

August has passed by with a lot of golf being played. Club Champs are well under way now, with finals less than a month away. Pennants: Totaradale Gold Pennants team won our area and made it to Pennants Finals in Westport. Although the girls had some very close games we were 4th by 1 point. Great effort girls. Thanks to all the caddies who gave up their time to support the team for the trip. Acheson Cup: Another fine result against Nelson by all players as we retained the Cup. September will see our last challenge for 2016 from Blenheim. Congratulations to Willie Simpson and Yvonne Burbidge who were Runner Up to a Motueka pair in the Motueka Combined Stableford Tournament recently. We have several players taking part next week in the Greenacres Open Tournament next week. A Big thank you to Clare, Fran and Adrianne who have done a great job at the clubhouse cleaning up after the flooring was installed. They have cleaned windows, cleaned our=t the storage bins and re-housed the wardrobe and library away for our south facing (now picture window). Great job girls. Good golfing Sue Rawson Ladies Captain.

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT - Over the last couple of months golf has been played in heavy

conditions with all the rain that our great course has had and I personally would like to thank John De Jong (the greenkeeper) for all the work he has done in trying conditions. Also to the helpers that has given him a hand to keep the course in playing order. Through this testing time we have played the Strokeplay albeit over three of the stipulated 5 rounds. The Gross winner of the strokeplay was Dennis Beggs with a three round total of 250, his runner-up was Denis Hall with a three round total of 252. With the three scores he posted for the Nett Denis Hall won this with 207 followed by runner-up and first year member Robert Tiare. Congratulations to these three players in doing so well over the three rounds available. Through the year the Totaradale men have been competing in the Sloan Trophy which came to its climax at our course (home course advantage did help a little even though starting off #3 as I had suggested). We qualified for the semi final of the Marty Thompson Shield in 7th place to play Murchison in the morning where they took us to a 3 all draw after the 18 holes, this meant that myself (Hamish) had to play for the second year in a row a playoff to decide who played the final in the afternoon. Thankfully I stayed in the fairway and hit the green and was conceded the putt to win the play off. This then meant that off #7 in the afternoon we played against Nelson who had beaten Greenacres in the morning, through the round the matches switched in favour of us and back to them many times but eventually our team managed the 4 to 2 victory to win the Shield. Not quite the Sloan Trophy as we did last year but pleasing nonetheless. Thanks goes to fellow teammates during the year and Kevin Tippett for selecting the team. We are currently part way through the Club Champs and good luck go to those competing in the main draw of each grade and the flight grades also. We have the Ryder Trophy due to be played mid September and a sheet is on the board for players available to play to put their names on. Over this weekend the 3rd and 4th of September Nick McIntyre will be competing for the Intermediate team in Greymouth against the Marlborough and Buller / Westland teams. Good luck to him down the Coast. Happy Golfing Hamish McWhinnie

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT - Sunday 11th of September the Liddle Salver and Mace Cup will be

played 27 Hole Foursome Best Nett and Best Gross. Please find a partner and put your names up. Or just put your name on the sheet if you are interested and a partner may find you! Sunday tournaments are a good day out. Lots of our members enjoy participating in these events, so please enter into these competitions. We have been having problems with members not allowing other members or green fee players through. Please remember that courtesy is required at all times. If a single player can speed through please have some common courtesy and allow them to go. Likewise match players who play their match on another day. You need to ask politely if you are able to move quickly through. We want all our players at Totaradale to have a positive friendly experience when playing on our course. Nichola Cullen

On the Green There’s often a little confusion over what you can and cannot do on the putting green, so let’s take out some of the misconceptions:- Permitted:-

The repair of any ball marks/ pitch marks whether or not your ball lies on the green.

The repair of any old hole plugs [these can be pressed down or lifted as required]

If your ball moves in the act of doing either of the above – no penalty and replace the ball

You can move loose impediments which includes both sand and soil [only on the green] if your ball moves in the act – no penalty and replace the ball. However, sand and soil on the fringe must not be moved or brushed away. ****

Addressing the ball in front of the ball [provided nothing is pressed down]

In measuring to see who plays next or which is nearest the hole.

Lifting and replacing the ball [includes cleaning the ball]

Pressing down a ball marker.

Moving a movable obstruction e.g. a coin or tee Scraping away worms casts [provided nothing is pressed down]

Not Permitted:-

Touching the line of putt is not permitted except for any of the above.

You may not test the surface during your round but may practice putts in between holes on the hole last played or any practice green.

You must not putt standing astride or on the Line of Putt on an extension behind the ball [croquet style]

Any damage on the green other than as above e.g. from spikes, clubs, flagstick must not be repaired until

after holing out. You must not repair a pitch mark on the fringe if it lies on your line of play

Notes:- **** If your ball lies on the fringe and another player plays a stroke from a bunker and deposits sand on and around your ball you are entitled to the lie and line of play you had when your ball came to rest. Accordingly, you are permitted to remove the sand deposited by the other player’s stroke and clean your ball without pen-alty. The same would apply from a fairway bunker where sand is deposited on your ball from another player’s stroke. If the flagstick has been removed and placed on the green and a player’s putt is racing toward it, the flagstick may be lifted by anyone so the ball does not strike it – if it does 2 stroke penalty in stroke play or loss of hole in match play.

OUT AND ABOUT ON YOUR COURSE Spring is trying very hard to make an arrival. And there is some grass growth to prove that. George Paki Paki has been a great helper around the course to do bits and bobs around the place. Like raking cones and needles, cleaning around the markers and picking up branches. All the fairways have been sliced, this is a valuable part of mechanical maintenance of the course. It helps with drainage, improves the soil structure and will let fertiliser go into the soil rather than washing down the slopes. And in the summer the cracks will open up and water will be able to soak in better. It was great to see a lot of people at the Via Tournament. I enjoyed bringing my family around for the hangi and catching up with a few people. Please support the sponsor Wakefield Outdoor Power Equipment, Peter has a lot of experience and knowledge in this field. We will be sanding the greens every month from now on, hopefully starting next week. Greenacres are being kind again to let us use their sanding machine. Happy Golfing John.

Health and Safety September 2016 Recently a person had a heart attack at Tasman Golf Course. He had to be airlifted by Helicopter to Nelson Hospital. I think it would be a grand idea for all of you to refresh your knowledge around CPR and the use of the Defibrillator. I have learned there is still confusion around what action to take when a person is collapsing. So please make some time to get updated. Two excellent U-tube teaching sessions I can highly recommend. Next to that Google allows you to print of the information. St. John CPR/Defibrillator 0r Resuscitation Council NZ Dy Short
