The group knits or crochets shawls to give to those who are recovering from surgery, those who are grieving, those who are homebound, and to those who need comfort. The group’s abilities range from novice to expert. You do not know how to knit or crochet? The group welcomes you to join them and receive instruction. You cannot attend the meetings? You can still contribute to the group from home!

Friendship Connection is a fellowship group for retirees that meets on the third Tuesday of each month. The September program will be on September 16 at 11 a.m. in the Sardis House. Our guests will be educators from the North Carolina Zoo. You can look forward to hearing information about how animals around the world adapt to survive. We will have lunch ($8/person) at noon. Join us for “An Evening with Robert Whitlow” on Tuesday, September 30. Our evening will start with punch at 5:45 p.m., then dinner at 6:00 p.m., and our speaker, best selling author, Robert Whitlow will be joining us at 6:45 p.m. The dinner is $10 per person. Sardis Supper and Speakers Series Change is coming to our mid‐week program for adults! Instead of weekly meetings, we are planning to have a dinner and speaker program, one Wednesday evening each month. The dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m.‐6:15 p.m. The speaker will present from 6:30 p.m.– 7 p.m., with a question and answer session until 7:15 p.m. Dinner reservations need to be made by noon on the Monday before each program date. Sardis Gift Options‐ Leave A Legacy

Each of us has different interests, just as the verse from Corinthians indicates. We’ve also been given different kinds of personal gifts. What are yours?

Throughout our lives, we are afforded the opportunity for options. The choices we make—choosing our life partner, where we live, the church we attend, career choices, investment decisions—are endless. Accordingly, each of us has the option of bequeathing money through our wills, insurance policies, trusts or annuities, or making living gifts during our lifetime to Sardis for its capital and other long term needs. It is your choice.

You may desire to increase financial support for an endowment already established in Christian education, mission, youth ministries, or property areas (Sanctuary, playground, cloister and memorial gardens, or cemetery upkeep). In addition, there is a general endowment fund which the Session can utilize for any long‐term need that is not part of our annual budget. What this implies is that Sardis needs our financial support beyond our annual giving.

Remembering Sardis in our wills, through an annuity or trust, or supporting Sardis during our lifetime through an endowment are ways to provide funding for maintaining the Sardis heritage.

Consider sharing your gift through an endowment or through another type of financial support. Leave a legacy.

Habitat for Humanity ‐ Are YOU “In?”

Sardis Church is continuing its tradition of support for Habitat for Humanity as the major sponsor for the next house to be built by Habitat Matthews. This will mark the 104th house built by Habitat Matthews, a remarkable ac‐complishment achieved through countless hours of hard work, sweat equity, and Christian fellowship.

While the dates and times are not quite set, the house will undergo construction starting in the latter part of September and continue for approximately 14 weeks. There will be opportunities for construction labor, providing lunches, and landscape work for adults, youth and children at various stages of the project. Look for the dates and specific tasks to be published in the near future.

In keeping with our Stewardship theme of “I’m In,” consider what you can do to support Habitat individually or collectively as an Mustard Seed Group, Circle, Sunday School Class, or church ministry. No special skills are required, just a willingness to help the least of these in reaching their dream of a home for their family.

Yearlong Stewardship

Most of us like to put stewardship out of our minds for eleven and a half months of the year. Usually about the first of November, before we think seriously about Thanksgiving or Christmas, we operate in stewardship mode, deciding whether or not we can increase our last year’s commitment resulting in this year’s giving.

Back in the day, we thought about our church contribution weekly, or at least monthly, when we wrote the check. Today it’s auto deposited, similar to auto pilot in an aircraft. I’m not saying things were better in the old days—they were not. I am saying we should think of stewardship not as a “reason for the season” but as a reason for yearlong giving! Even better, giving back. Good luck.

• Second Saturday services will continue to be held monthly for the remainder of 2014. Those dates are September 13, October 11, November 8 and December 13.

• Approval was given to change fees charged to Sardis groups for the use of Sardis buses. The current fee of $1.50 per mile for short trips remains the same but trips longer than 100 miles will be charged at $25 per night plus the actual cost of gas. This change will be reviewed in one year.

• Director of Administration, Jennifer Childers, gave a report on the progress of the HVAC project.

August Diaconate Highlights • The Deacons will serve Communion for World Communion Sunday, October 4.

• There will be a defibrillator put in the Sardis House. • A new Hope Team will begin sponsoring a family in September.

• Sardis Under The Stars will be September 27.

• Boy Scouts will be serving their brunswick stew at Sardis Under the Stars.

• Crop Walk will be October 19. • Pumpkinpalooza will be October 25 at 4 p.m.

As summer comes to close with children back to school and off to college, the halls of Sardis ring with construction work in the Education Building and echo with memories of another successful VBS, Camp Holiday, inspirational mission trips for our youth and their advisors, and, many more similar activities. Yet reality sets in when we view the enclosed financial results. Through July we are significantly under budget regarding “Pledged Income” which has resulted in a much lower cash position for the church than expected. So, as Fall sets in and new activities begin, please review your personal pledge position and, if behind, give serious consideration to bringing it up to date. We continue to do a very good job in expense management, but again Fall activities for our ministries will increase our financial needs. As always we do want to thank everyone for their continued support and faithfulness. Sardis always rises to the occasion, and we are confident that God will continue to bless Sardis and our entire church family.

The Church Mouse Program: Ministering to Our College Students

The Church Mouse Project is designed to help college students continue to feel part of the Sardis family while they are away living on college campuses. Collegians interested in having a “mouse” apply; members of the congregation volunteer to be “mice.” The mice then anony‐mouse‐ly send cards and inexpensive items to their collegian several times during the year.

Civic Orchestra at Sardis Mark your calendar for Sunday, October 5 at 3:30 p.m. when Sardis will host the Charlotte Civic Orchestra in our Sanctuary. They will present the opening concert of their 2014‐2015 series. Under the baton of Geoffrey Whitehead, PhD, the Civic Orchestra is made up of accomplished musicians from Charlotte who play for the love of classical music and the gratification of performing in front of a live audience. Mission Trip for the Sardis Tai Chi Class

On July 25, the Sardis Tai Chi Class went on a “mission trip” to the Dove’s Nest, the residential addiction treatment program for women that is offered by the Rescue Mission for Women. On Friday afternoons, outside groups are invited to present programs for the residents. The Dove’s Nest directors are eager to introduce their residents to new activities and life skills. Sardis’ Tai Chi class introduced the residents to the calming and body strengthening benefits of Tai Chi. The class “performed” the Tai Chi routine, led the residents in a time of Christian meditation, and then invited the residents to join them and learn the ten basic exercises that are the foundation for the Tai Chi routine. The residents were very receptive and afterward spoke with the class members individually. They shared their stories and expressed appreciation for the introduction to a new exercise and its calming benefits. The volunteer coordinator reported to Jane Fobel that the residents “loved the class and want them to come back.” The warm reception was appreciated by the Sardis members, yet as is true with participation in most outreach endeavors, the class members felt they had received a greater blessing. It was humbling to see the commitment of the residents to restore their health and make a better life for themselves and for their children.

The Sardis class will continue to meet each Tuesday, beginning September 2, in the Sardis House at 4:15 – 5:15 p.m.

A class for beginners will be offered each Tuesday, at 5:15 – 6:15 p.m., if there are at least 10 participants registered. It will also meet in the Sardis House. The fee for the class is $18 a month. Questions? Contact Jane Fobel at [email protected] or 704.366.1854.

Yoga Classes

Beginning the week of September 2, yoga classes are scheduled to begin meeting two times each week. The classes are held on Tuesday and Friday mornings, from 9:30 a.m.—10:30 a.m. The instructor is Cay Moore, a certified yoga instructor and a licensed physical therapist. The fee is $5 per class. Fall/Winter Youth Basketball—Ages 5‐18 years old

Sardis participates in the Metrolina Ministries Youth Basketball League for boys and girls ages 5—18 years old. We will play teams from any of over 30 Charlotte area churches. The league strives to provide a competitive, team building environment while representing Christ in our actions. The season consists of an eight game schedule with a season ending tournament for all teams. Practice begins November 1 with games scheduled the first Saturday of December through early March. Ten Cents a Meal

The first Sunday of each month we collect “Ten‐Cents‐A‐Meal” donations to provide hunger relief and help at‐risk youth in our community. Watch for changes as we expand the participation of this service opportunity from the Youth to all members of the Sardis family. Beginning this fall, the Christian Education Ministry is the first to rotate over the collection process. Thank you for setting aside ten cents at each meal and donating it on the first Sunday for our neighbors who need help.

Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk Sunday, October 19

One child dies from hunger‐related causes every five seconds. In the U.S., more than 43 million Americans donʹt have enough to eat. This year local hunger agencies are even more in need of our support. Twenty‐five percent of the money raised during the Charlotte Walk remains here to support local food charities. The balance of the money goes overseas to support the efforts of the sponsoring agency, Church World Service, to provide disaster relief and sustainable development in over 50 countries.

Sardis members are encouraged to participate through donations and/or joining our Sardis Team. The 6k (3.8 mile) walk starts at 2:30 p.m. in uptown Charlotte. We encourage Sunday School classes, Mustard Seed Groups, Youth Groups, Choirs, Circles, and families to walk together and maybe even engage in some healthy competition to see who can field the most walkers. We are challenging each of our walkers to raise $150, which is only $10 from 15 people!!

Spaghetti Sauce Sundays

Forty pounds of sauce were collected in July for Loaves and Fishes! Drop off your extra spaghetti sauce any Sunday in the Gathering Place or Narthex. Your donation will help feed a family in need.

Sardis Garden – Green thumb badge!

David Blackley and the boy scouts worked hard in the Sardis Garden this spring. Thanks to their amazing job, the garden is overflowing with squash, tomatoes and flowers which have been delivered to the Matthews Help Center, and soon to our shut‐ins. A great, big thank you for your hard work!

A New Year of Planting Seeds of Hope at Rama Road Elementary School!

Sardis members, your donations of school supplies made our Pool for School Tools drive a resounding success. These supplies will help both the students and teachers at Rama Road.

The Rama Road staff enjoyed their welcome back orientation at the Sardis House on Monday, August 18. They were treated to breakfast and lunch prepared by the Planting Seeds of Hope Committee and given bags filled with school supplies. Their day included getting ready for a successful school year with team building exercises in the Sardis House and a cookie decorating competition, based on the TV program Chopped, in the Fellowship Hall. The day concluded with the entire staff participating in outreach at the Second Harvest Food Bank. Staff members are always so appreciative of the support shown by Sardis members.

Harry Potter Comes to Sardis!

During the first quarter of the year, our elementary students will join on A Faith Journey with Harry Potter. This Sunday School class will meet in the Sardis House for the first few weeks of the class, at 10 a.m.

The Harry Potter books and the movies have had the ability to capture the imaginations of chil‐dren, youth, and adults. While the books are fan‐tasies, they are full of themes that speak to us as Christians. Evident in the stories are service, encouragement, friendship, courage, and family.

To Families of First and Fourth Grade Students:

Due to the special series for all elementary students during Sunday School, your Christian Education Ministry has delayed our Worship program for first graders and Catechism for fourth grade until January. More information will be sent to families later this year. We invite all children to participate in these special programs later into the year.

Thursday Morning Seekers Bible Study

Join us on Thursday mornings, 10 – 11 a.m., Room 211/212, beginning September 4. This class will be led by Jane Fobel. Our Fall Study will be from Deuteronomy and our Spring Study will be from the Gospel of Matthew.

Exploring the Bible Class—Thursday Morning Bible Study

Beginning on September 4, Exploring the Bible Class, led by Renda Brinson, will do a study of the book of Acts. The church is the community of God’s people and Acts looks at the beginning of the Church – the men and women who lead it and the principles that steered it. This class uses questions, discussion and lecture to investigate Scripture together, and meets on Thursday mornings from 10 a.m.—11:30 a.m. in the Sardis House. Beginning in January, we will do a study of Parables.

Tuesday Evening Bible Study

Join us on Tuesdays from 6:30—8:00 p.m. beginning on September 2. We will meet in room 211/212. Bring your supper, if you want, for a weekly study. There are questions to guide your reading assignment for the week, class discussion and some lecture. We will do an overview of three prophets: Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. Each of these men spoke to their nation at a time of internal strife and threats from those surrounding them. Their words can be heard anew in our world. Our study beginning in January will be on the book of Romans. Contact Renda Brinson with any questions.

Join an Adult Sunday School Class This Fall

If it is 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, Sardis adults are engaged in a variety of Sunday School classes.

This fall, Discussing Bible, Books, and Topics will be using the Present Word Curriculum to study the message of the Old Testament Prophets; Reading for Reformed Reflection will be reading Jack Roger’s book, Presbyterian Creeds: A Guide to the Book of Confessions; The Bible Study for Women Class will be studying the book of Genesis; and the Contemporary Christian Issues Class welcomes a variety of speakers from the community to lead reflection on issues in our wider community from the prospective of our faith. September speakers include Tom Kort, Adrian Martin (our new Director of Youth Ministries) and Brandan Pierce from F3 Foundation. Our other adult classes, Crossroads, The Robert Pharr Men’s Class, Open Door and Java, all have exciting offerings as well.

We have large classes, small classes, lecture‐based classes and discussion classes. There is a place for everyone in Sunday school at Sardis. For questions contact Jane Fobel at [email protected] or call 704.366.1854.

The new Sunday school year begins on Sunday, September 7. Look for, and take, the brochure in the pew and the literature racks for a description of the classes.

All classes will return to their regular meeting schedule, though some classes will be in new locations for the first 6 – 8 weeks of the new program year.
