September 2013 NEWSLETTER
We are honored to serve as President and Vice President of the 2013-2014 Belle Haven Women’s Club. Our goal for this
program year is to plan events and activities that will not only be of interest to the membership, but will encourage and
foster a sense of community. We want to create opportunities for friends to spend time with one another and for
neighbors, whose paths might not otherwise cross, to meet and become acquainted. This year’s program is a mix of
traditional favorites and a few, new (and hopefully fun and informative) efforts. Highlights include the Welcome New
Member Potluck event this month and the traditional co-ed Blocktail, Holiday, and Wintertini parties this Fall and Winter.
We have planned a “Community Awareness” program for November, as we enter the holiday season and think even more
of others. We look forward to gathering neighbors for a mid-January Winter Tea, where we also will hear from a DC
protocol expert about the protocol of entertaining with flowers, as well as the latest in tabletop trends. Join us next Spring
for a Cooking Demonstration by a local chef and attend our Annual Meeting and Dinner in May. The theme for the May
event will be “Fashion for the Home,” and we look forward to hearing about the latest design trends from a Washington
Design Center Hall of Fame inductee. Not to be missed is the upcoming October monthly meeting, where we kick-off the
next BHWC Cookbook effort with a “Taste of Autumn.”
Take a minute to look at the 2013-2014 Calendar attached to the September BHWC E-Mail Message (the calendar is also
available on the BHWC website). The Calendar provides event and meeting information. All members of the BHWC are
warmly invited to Events, Committee, and Board meetings. Updated versions of the Calendar will be provided in each
month’s Membership E-Mail Message. Details will be added to the Calendar on the BHWC website, as soon as they are
confirmed or become available.
We are trying something new this year in the form of a monthly Newsletter. Much of the success of this monthly
communication will depend upon information provided by you. We are most appreciative of any news, photos, or
suggestions for articles that relate to our Belle Haven Women’s Club community and our members.

Belle Haven Garden Club
“Tip of the Month”
September is the time to switch out your faded annuals with
fall plants flowering in yellow, orange, purple and red.
Try perennials like rudbeckia, hardy salvia or coneflowers
(Echinacea). Or browse the garden centers for
chrysanthemums, asters and pansies.
September is also the month to rejuvenate your lawn: aerate,
reseed and fertilize. Eleni Silverman’s Summer Garden
New to gardening? Want to know the name of that pesky plant? Find answers to all your questions at our Belle Haven
Garden Club Meetings! The BH Garden Club is open to all members of the Belle Haven Women’s Club. Our next
Meeting is on Tuesday, September 17th and will be hosted by Diane Brumbaugh, 1915 Windsor Road. We start with
coffee and conversation at 9:30am. September’s meeting will focus on this year’s successes (and failures) in our gardens,
and suggestions for upcoming speakers and day trips.
Our current President is Eleni Silverman; for more information, you can contact her at [email protected] or 703.960.1261.
