BORN TO WORSHIP!

“When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples

worshiped him. ‘You really are the Son of God!’ they exclaimed.”

– Matthew 14:32-33 (NLT)

Please read the scripture (above) before you go any further. I want you to notice that it was when the disciples realized who Jesus was … that they truly began to worship him. It was at that point that they truly became worshippers. As we begin a year with a theme of ‘Passionate Worship,’ a question came to my mind that I’d read some time ago. “Are you more interested in leading people in worship … or in developing people into becoming worshippers?” Though I love leading in worship, I knew in seeking to answer that question that the higher priority had to be to develop people into becoming worshippers. Why? ‘Because … that’s a vital part of teaching people how to be disciples of Jesus Christ—the very reason that the church exists. That’s what our new Fall Series is all about: “BORN TO WORSHIP.” And, I might add, it’s also subtitled: “Narcissism is Highly Overrated!” The world, you see, will always push us to ask the question: What’s in it for me? But God will always push us to ask the question—directed at God first: What can I do for you? There’s the Spirit of Worship; there’s the attitude we need to approach worship with.

For God’s word tells us (Psalm 29:2), “Honor the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.” God’s word directs us in this way … because we were born to worship! It’s what we were created for. We were born to place God at the center of our lives! But, the world—unfortunately—has told us a lie. It’s said that we need to place ourselves first—at the center of our world. Unfortunately, too many—including some in the church today—have bought into this lie. It seems that something is now missing—the very thing that we were created to do… Have you ever wondered (regarding your faith), ‘Isn’t there something more? Is this all there is?’ Starting on September 11, we’re going to be talking about the ‘something more.’ What’s missing in many people’s lives is what they were born to do! Come join us, beginning on September 11, as we learn together how to become worshippers (those who know who Jesus truly is)—the very thing we were created to be… See you in the house of worship,

Pastor Rom

If you have any questions, please contact Charlene Mingst at 935-5758.

A NOTE ABOUT CHANGE Change is a necessary part of life. Sometimes change brings up a lot of emotions and misunderstandings. There seems to be a misconception that changing from an old way of doing things to a new way of doing things means that the old way was wrong. The truth is that the “old way” often was the best way of doing things at some time in the past, but the “new way” may be a better way to do things today. When it comes to changes at church, we need to keep our perspective…remembering who church is for and what we are to be about. What we do as a church should be all about Jesus and making disciples for him. This means we need to think about how to reach people outside the church for Jesus. Let’s pray together that God will fill us with his love in the days ahead.

Beth Schlueter, Connections Ministry

CURIOUS ABOUT STEPHEN MINISTRY?

If you’re interested in learning more about what Stephen Ministry is and/or what Stephen Ministers do, please stop by the Café table in September. Along with some refreshments, you will find a Stephen Minister available to answer any questions you may have. For those who may be interested in becoming a Stephen Minister, we will have an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 PM in the church library.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOODIES GONE?

Beginning in August, the drinks and other goodies for fellowship time were moved to the lobby instead of fellowship hall. We have made this move in an effort to make things more accessible to everyone and less intimidating for guests who typically don’t go into fellowship hall alone. You are welcome to enjoy your goodies in the lobby or, if you prefer, to take them into fellowship hall to the tables.

Beth Schlueter, Connections Ministry

Hospitality News Thank you to everyone who is continuing on our hospitality teams! You are a vital part of creating a welcoming atmosphere for our members and guests! Tammy Leiser is joining the Connections Team and will be co-leading the hospitality ministries at Dodgeville UMC. Greeters:

After many years of service as the first service greeter coordinators, Ron & Bobbi Butteris have decided to step down from this position. Ron & Bobbi have done a great job! Please thank them when you see them.

The bulletins for each service will be a little different beginning in September. Please check to make sure you’ve got the correct bulletins.

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY

The Adult Sunday Bible Study will meet in the Library at 10:05 starting Sunday, September 4. Our first Sunday will be used to discuss the format of the class and take care of administrative issues. Please get a cup of coffee and join us in the Library. We will be finished by 10:40. As discussed last

spring, we will continue with Kalas's material and be studying the book of James starting September 11.

7 MINUTE TIP RECAP

Remember: the first 7 minutes of a guest’s visit to a church for the first time will determine whether or not they ever come back…and all of us together are responsible for helping our guests feel welcome. Here are the tips we talked about in August:

1. No Visitors Allowed! Guests are welcome. How we think about our guests at Dodgeville UMC determines how we treat them.

2. Introduce Yourself: This comes more easily to some than others, but it’s important for all of us to do what we can to welcome others.

3. No Complaining! If you sound like you don’t want to be at church on Sunday morning, guests will probably decide they don’t want to be there either. Talk privately to whomever you’re having trouble with at another time.

4. Be Genuine. Guests will know if you’re whether you’re being sincere of phony. If you’re having a hard time, feel free to find a Stephen Minister, Stephen Leader, and/or Prayer Team Member to pray with you.

So there you have it – 4 simple things each of us can do to help make Dodgeville UMC a more welcoming place for our guests.

GROWTH THROUGH COMMUNITY & LOVING ACCOUNTABILITY

by Pastor Rom This month, after realizing that we need intentional preparation for membership (August 2011), I want to cover a couple of brief items that need to be taken into consideration when looking to have a healthy membership in any given church. The first item comes out of a confession by the Willow Creek Community Church, N. Barrington, Illinois—one of the country’s largest congregations. After a great deal of study, this comment came out of their confession: “…spiritual growth doesn’t happen best by becoming dependent on elaborate church programs but through the age old spiritual practices of prayer, bible reading, and relationships.”

1 Even though their name is Willow Creek

Community Church, what seemed to be lacking in the process of spiritual preparation (which is what the process of membership needs to be) was ‘community.’ And, that’s where spiritual growth through relationships—as well as disciplines like prayer and bible reading—take place. In one sense, community may be what is missing in much of life in the west today. There are many of us who barely know our neighbors. If someone we do not know says ‘hi’ to us on the street, many times we meet that greeting with suspicion. Community does not seem like a natural occurrence as much as it once was. So, in one way, if we are going to work toward real community in the Church—a safe place to explore and to grow in our Christian faith, it will be somewhat of a counter-cultural shift, at least for a majority of our generations. In another sense, however, our culture—especially among our younger people—may be making a move toward community. I can’t help but think of phenomena like Starbucks Coffee. They have been successful, especially among our younger generations, because they did not just set out to be successful on coffee alone. What they created was a community that people could belong to. The same could be said for the approach of the Saturn automobile. You didn’t just buy a car; you bought into a community of Saturn owners.

This innate human need of desiring to have a place to belong is also a wonderful opportunity for the Church to introduce a community or ‘communio’ like the world has never seen. In Christ, we can have ‘communio’—not just a place to belong temporally with those we enjoy hanging out with, but a place to belong eternally as we commune not just with brothers and sisters in Christ, but with the three Persons of God—the Trinity. The small group—a more personal community that many are seeking today—can be a place to introduce and establish true ‘communio’ as those desiring to connect with the Church in a more official way come to us for preparation. Christ at the center is the key to finding ‘communio’ and it is the key to fulfilling the need for relationship and finding a place to belong; what the church can offer, however, is for eternity. Along with the importance of community, I also one to mention one more item essential to a healthy church membership: loving accountability. This was one of the main keys to the success of the growing early Church. And, it can be a key to the success of a growing congregation today, too. It seems that, in a sense, one of the greatest persecutions that the Church today faces is the attitude that says: because we live in a

democracy, the Church should operate under the same guiding principles. What the Church has forgotten in far too many areas of her life is that the Church is a part of the Kingdom of God. It is not a democracy. It is not about ‘my rights.’ It is about following and serving the King. But, this attitude is what has gradually siphoned off the whole idea of accountability for disciples in the Church today. Henry Blackaby concurs in sharing this: “One of the greatest hindrances for Christians is the way so many of us try to cling to our rights and what we think we deserve. The truth is, when you became a Christian, you give over all the rights of your life to the One who has the unquestionable right to be your Lord….”

1

A part of the problem with the ‘my rights’ attitude is that it also runs contrary to whole idea of community. This is the community that we need to grow in, to be prepared for membership in, and an area of change that we have already talked about. Let me explain with the help of an individual who understands how churches need to be transformed or changed. Speaking of individual rights (which can be a good thing) taken to the extreme, Kevin Ford explains:

The problem is not recognizing the importance of the individual. The problem [today] is the glorification of the individual. When the individual self is glorified over the greater good of the community, rights begin to take precedence over responsibility, isolated pursuits replace the struggle for the common good, desires are twisted to resemble needs, and the imitation is presented as the real thing.

1

The question, regarding this form of persecution or problem in the Church today, is this: Who is at the center? Who is really Lord of our lives? It is perfectly understandable for those who do not know Christ to be self-centered. We are all born that way. And, we are never transformed to a new condition until we meet Christ personally and, instead of being self-centered, we then grow to be God-centered or Christ-centered. If Jesus is Lord, then it is his agenda that should be ‘ahead of every other consideration.’ Even if loving accountability may be the most difficult area of change that needs to be implemented in the Church today, it will be necessary if we are to get back on the road to a healthy membership. And, the process of initiation—the methods we use to prepare those coming into the Church to be members—can incorporate this idea within its preparation. This is the perfect time to introduce the idea of accountability to those new to the faith and new to the Church. United Methodist Church historian Fred Norwood comments in this way: “Perhaps it is time for Methodists to make clear to all concerned that to get in is hard, to stay in is harder, but that the saving grace of Jesus Christ is worth any price and any effort, and that his grace is sufficient

for us all.”

1 Perhaps Longden was right, too. Membership really is

about “…Baptism into communion by means of ‘costly grace,’ redemption from sin, power to live a new life, and a call to radical holiness.”

1 Membership really does come with expectations … and the

need to be held accountable. So, where do we go from here? If a different kind of membership (healthy) is what we are seeking, we need a different approach to membership. And, in typical Wesleyan fashion, we need to begin with scripture being primary. Next month, I will share with you a theology (what God thinks) of membership… 1 Conversations hosted by the editors of Leadership Journal, “Willow Creek

INTRODUCTION OF OUR NEW NURSERY CARE WORKERS Kayla Crook – Kayla is the daughter of Brett & Patti Crook. She

graduated from high school a few years back and is currently employed at St. Joseph’s Daycare here in Dodgeville. Kayla is both CPR and First Aid certified. She is also state certified for in-home daycare. Abby Philipps – Abby is the daughter of Pat & Allison Philipps. She is

a senior at Dodgeville High School this year and has a deep interest in the care of children. We have had the privilege of working with Abby for the past couple of years as a youth leader at Vacation Bible School. Abby is CPR and First Aid certified, as well as being a certified baby sitter. Both Kayla and Abby have strong Christian faiths and are excited about sharing their faith with children enrolled in our nursery ministry. We welcome both of them and thank them for their service to the Dodgeville United Methodist Church! Christian Education Ministry Team

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION UNDER CONSTRUCTION After losing our long-time Christian Education Director at the end of May, Pastor Rom formed and is currently working with a new Christian Education Ministry Team—made up of individuals involved in education. On the Christian Education Ministry Team are: Sarah Godfrey, Julia Harman and Julie Piper (also our Lay Leader). This year begins the second step of our Ministry Plan that focuses on ‘Passionate Worship’ (the first step was ‘Radical Hospitality’—something we’ve been working on for the past year). If worship is to be the focus this year, the first order of business is to help make that successful. The 10:45 AM service is being designed for younger families—many with children. So, getting the nursery ministry restarted (as a part of our Christian Education ministry) has been a priority. Interviews were recently conducted to fill the positions of nursery care workers. (See enclosed article introducing new nursery staff.) The nursery will kick-off for the 10:45 AM service on Sunday, September 11

th.

The remainder of the Christian Education ministry is being organized by age-groups. Two age-group leaders have already been designated. Joining the Staff as ‘unpaid servants’ at this time are: Gail Ray for Adult Ministries and Craig Brown for Youth Ministries. The leadership position that we are still seeking is that of Children’s Ministries Coordinator. It’s been agreed by all, after several weeks of prayer and discussion, that the filling of the Children’s Ministries position will be a process that may extend throughout this school year. Though no traditional Sunday School will be offered currently, plans are being discussed for a possible Children’s Church option in the new year —fitting in perfectly with our emphasis on ‘Passionate Worship.’ The bottom line is that our children and the children of the future being educated in the faith by this congregation deserve our time, prayers, and study. We want to be mindful of what God wants for the future of this ministry. We are seeking and studying appropriate models for the Christian education of our children. When in place, this ministry may look different than it ever has before. We will be structuring the Christian Education ministry of the Dodgeville United Methodist Church for the mission of the Church (Making Disciples for Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World) and God’s vision for this church (Love God, Love People, Serve God by Serving Others). In the interim, we are recommending quarterly family events—focusing on whole families as well as the children. This will continue to be discussed as the Christian Education Ministry Team will be meeting monthly, with regular reports to the Church Council (minutes posted on main bulletin board) during the year. Please do continue to pray for us, as we pray and seek God’s guidance on this future ministry of our church. Christian Education Ministry Team

STEPHEN MINISTRY Q &A

Some of us are still wondering, “What is it? Who’s it for? & What it’s all about anyway? It is rightfully said to be “God’s Love in Action”, or more specifically, “God’s People helping People”. This brings us back to the question, “Who’s it for?’ The logo depicts a care giver (Stephen Minister) helping to carry the burden of a Care-receiver, utilizing the power of the cross. This is something we Christians are called to do (Galatians 6:2) “Carry each others burdens, & in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ,” This simple scriptural admonition reminds us that:

1. The loads we carry are sometimes heavy – we need someone alongside. 2. We Christians have the resources & responsibility to help, encourage, support, pray.

The Stephen Ministry Program provides training in the how, along with the support & encouragement of fellow trainees & Stephen Leaders. If you’ve ever said, “I wish I knew what to say – what to do – how to help, - this program is for you. The Stephen minister training will help each of us become a better listener – more thoughtful & compassionate – more aware of our calling. A real estate developer from West Virginia says Stephen Ministry Training enhances all relationships. Here is what he says: “Stephen Ministry is all about giving to others, but I can tell you, I have received far more than I have given. The benefits go on and on. The skills I learned as a Stephen Minister have helped me at home in my family, at work with my peers, and at church with other Christians. Stephen Ministry has also brought many dear people into my life whom I otherwise would never have met. I thank God for pushing me in this direction and hope I will be able to give something back in return for what I have received.” Recruitment for the next training session is in progress. See Gail Ray, Beth Schleuter, Pastor Rom or Charlene for information.

Adult Fellowship

Membership, Confirmation, Spiritual Enrichment Class

Offered this Fall: Essential Transformation (E.T. for short) is a 13-week class for those desiring to explore the basics of the Christian faith. This class is also for any sophomore (or up) who desires to be confirmed, for those exploring membership at Dodgeville UMC, or for anyone who is simply interested in growing in their knowledge of the Christian faith (long-time members are welcome!).

Classes will be Wednesday evenings from September 14 through December 14, from 6:30-8:00 PM. (Nursery care is possible by prior arrangement.)

For all who have ever felt that the Bible or Bible study is intimidating, this is the class for you! We start at the beginning: We start with how to get around in the Bible itself. Then we start with basic beliefs of our faith - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and how God works in and through our lives in special ways. Along with that, we hope to answer your questions about things like "Why the church?" Won't you pray about joining Pastor Rom and Beth Schlueter as they prepare to lead E.T. this fall?

If interested, please contact the church office at 935-5451 as soon as possible! Also, if you will be bringing children with you during these Wednesday evening classes, please let us know that, too. We hope to see you there!

PASTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND During the month of August, $100 was given to people in our community calling on the church for assistance. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please write PDF in the

memo line of your check or on your offering envelope.
