First Church is making disciples by inviting people

to Believe, Grow and Impact. Those three words

will focus us in the days ahead. We want people to

Believe in Jesus Christ, to Grow in Christ, and to

Impact the world for Christ. As we design strate-

gies and plans we will also look to see how peo-

ple’s lives are being transformed.

Along with these three words our Bishop is

challenging each church to set five goals for 2012.

The areas of goals will be in *worship attendance,

*small groups, *new Christians (professions of

faith), *mission involvement, and *money for mis-

sion needs.

As we move into the new month we will be focusing on the three words

and the five goals. I pray that your life and faith are being strengthened and re-

newed each Sunday.

I will share more with you in the month ahead to show how we can all take

steps to further the mission at First Church of making disciples.

See you in worship. In Christ’s Love, Ted

Worship Highlights for September!

Rev. Dr. Richard A. Patton

Worship Arts Director

Page 2

The Bell Newsletter

We will gather on Sunday, September 4 at 9:30a.m. for one worship service. We will celebrate

Communion and look at the story of Gideon from Judges 6. There will be a delicious cookout

following the worship service.

On Sunday, September 11 there will be several special things happening in worship. We

will have a Sep 11, 2001 Remembrance moment as we reflect on what happened in our world 10

years ago. We will be receiving new youth members at both services as a part of our Confirma-

tion Sunday. Pastor Allison will be preaching that Sunday. We will also have a ―Ministry Fair‖ in

the Fellowship Hall so you can explore ways to serve in volunteer ministry.

September 18 will feature a Praise Band that will be in worship at both services. Rich-

ard is bringing this band to lead us in worship with an upbeat and joyfilled style. The message

will be entitled, ―Adopted by God: A Gift of Salvation,‖ based on Ephesians 1:1 – 14.

The Adoptions series will finish on September 25 with the theme of ―Adopted by God:

A Gift of Family,‖ based on Romans 8:12 – 17.

All of the musical groups will be in full practice and there will be times in worship when

you will hear Choirs, Bell Choirs, children, youth and special music solo’s. It is going to be a

great month.

It has happened again, and I should not be surprised. Everywhere I go I meet someone who helped me survive my birth. Sunday, a member of the congregation became the latest person to fill that bill. Allow me to explain. You see Richard A. Patton was the last baby born in a Japanese concentration camp at the end of WWII. In 1941 my parents were preparing to go into the mission field in China and were studying Chinese in Peking. The U.S. Government asked the school to move to a safer place in Manila in the Philippines. On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was bombed and so was Clark Field in the Philippines. As a re-sult Marjory Patton, her husband Pat and my brother Robert were interred in a Japanese Concentration camp for 36 months. Fortunately on Feb. 17, 1945 Gen. Douglas McArthur had freed enough of the city of Manila to allow my birth under the skilled hands of a Major Burke, despite the fact that the hospital was still being shelled. I like to say that God sent General McArthur, the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines to see me arrive safely in the world. The war however, was not over and our armed forces were continuing to guard us until we took ship for the states in May. In March of that year Bob Love was stationed at Subic Bay helping to secure the process of freeing the Philippines (6 months before the war ended). In essence he was guarding the flank of the entire Patton family. What more can I say but thank you to Bob and to the many that sacrificed time and in many cases their lives to get us safely home. God bless you Bob and to all your comrades.

The First United Methodist

School of Early Learning is

hosting the Daisy Walk/Run

in honor and memory of chil-

dren. The date of the event is

Saturday, September 17,

2011 at 8:00 a.m. This event

will be open to the congrega-

tion, preschool families, and

the community.

The race will be held in

memory of Daisy Morris, born prematurely, who passed away

Jan. 12 at only 20 days old. She was the daughter of Matt and

Addie (Post) Morris and great-granddaughter of Ginger Post.

We want you to participate or volunteer in this event! Not

only will you meet new preschool families and community

members, you will be helping a preschool student have expe-

riences that Daisy Morris will never have. Many families are

still struggling financially and need our help. Please prayer-

fully consider helping our preschool in this outreach to fami-

lies and the community. Help us remember and honor the

children in our lives and in our church.

The walk/run starts at Rieke Park, with the majority of the

event taking place on the nature trail and finishing in a park

pavilion. We hope to raise funds to offer scholarships to pre-

school families. Last year, with the generous support of the

church and community, 26 families were assisted. Help us

match the number of families we helped last year!

Please feel free to contact Director Kelly Oswalt (925-2570 or

[email protected]) with any questions.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the church congregation for supporting the United Methodist Women’s Red Bird Mission outreach project. Your generosity and response is overwhelming. We are able to take doz-ens of boxes of school supplies, Bibles, copier paper, clinic supplies and quality clothing to Red Bird. The amount of beautiful clothing and shoes in new-like condition donated is amazing. We received many tubs of adorable children’s and infant clothing in perfect condition. What a blessing this will be to many families fac-ing difficult times. What a wonderful, generous and caring congregation we have. This congregation truly believes the words of Matthew 25:35-40. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you some-thing to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Again, thank you for mak-ing this outreach project a huge success. God Bless you all. Susan Steinman and the United Methodist Women

The United Methodist Women are starting to make plans for their annu-al Holiday Bazaar November 11th and 12th. This is their major fund-raiser for the various projects they support. Your help would be greatly appreciated. They are in need of people who do crafts, sew, bake, etc. Also needed are people to make frozen casseroles as well as anyone who can help with the noon and evening meals. Don’t forget to save your jewelry for the ever popular jewelry booth. Again, you help in any of these areas is welcomed.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Dear First Church,

Thank you for sending me to camp. I had a lot of fun. There was a lot of

fun activities like paintball, blob, and the zipline. The pool was awesome.

All the time I was there I got closer to God. It was really fun to learn about

God. I learned from all the activities that I had to trust in God.

Thanks again, Austin Osterhout

Dear Auburn FUMC;

Thank you for sending me to camp Adventure this year! I had a lot of fun

blobbing, swimming, canoeing, zip lining and worshiping. When I left camp,

I felt so much closer to God. We talked about becoming big with our Faith in God. I am now committed

to following through with that wonderful idea. Thanks again, Sara Muckenfuss

Dear Church;

Dear Auburn FUMC;

Thank you for allowing me to go to camp again this year at Epworth Forest. I had an excellent experi-

ence again this year exploring my faith and digging deeper into God’s love. Staying in the new lodge was

excellent! It made the camp experience even better with the comfortable beds & air conditioning!!

Thank you so much, Anna Muckenfuss

Dear Church Family,

Thank you for helping me attend Camp Adventure this summer. My most favorite thing was the high

ropes because they were both fun and challenging. This year’s camp experience helped me continue to

grow in my connection with God. Our theme was CONNECT and we had many discussions on how we

can connect with God through prayer. Thank you again, Ayden Bowers

Dear Church Family;

Thank you so much for helping me go to camp. I had a fun time my first year at Camp Adventure. The

was awesome and added to the worship as we sang about God and the activities were so fun, even if it

was very hot that week. Thanks again, Carolyn Vadney

Dear Church Fmaily;

Thank you so much for the Christian CD and the role you play in my life and relationship with Christ. I

know I will listen to that CD at college and feel uplifted when I am stressed.

We want you to be a part of our new Family Album. Watch for more infor-mation to come soon.
