Open Mic Night @ The Inn feat. Just Like the Country

By Susan Spit-Fire Lively

Hey y’all! What’s happening? Hope that life is treating you

well! Come to Open Mic Night @ The Inn on Thursday, Aug.

25th (Doors-8; Show-9) for another amazing show filled

with the best artists in our area! Our main act for the show

will be Independent Folk Rock Band Just Like the Country,

which is composed of Nathan and Ginnifer Brown, a very

talented married couple from Edwardsville, IL. Their music

is moving and distinctly original and they have been

working together since High School. They play a variety of

diverse genres including Folk, Rock, and Pop. Their very

funny FB page states that: “’Nathan's powers include

various guitars, heat-vision, banjo, and electronic

programming. Ginnifer's powers are clarinet, accordion,

keyboards, singing, and of course, baking. Nathan and

Ginnifer have united their powers (heat vision, GPS, and

some musical talent) once again to fight the machinations

of evil. Join them and their quest for a fried pie not cooked

in lard.”’

Just Like the Country’s influences include Shawn

Colvin, Smashing Pumpkins, The Sundays, The Black

Crowes, Nick Drake, Aimee Mann, The Beatles, Rush,

Soundgarden, and Sarah McLachlan. They always gives a

great and memorable live performance, and have

appeared at venues such as The Stone Spiral Coffeehouse,

The Way Out Club, Mokka Kaffeehaus, FOAM, and The

Wine Press. The duo was also featured at Best-Fest 2010 in

Alton, IL. Their debut album Saint of the Open Opera was

just released this year. It is haunting and unique and really

highlights the quality of their music and the beauty of

Ginnifer’s voice. You can purchase it on iTunes or directly

from the artists.

Warming up the stage for the band will be an

exceptional Musician, Songwriter, and Vocalist originally

from Cape Girardeau, Mo. named Chrissy Renick. Chrissy

attended college at Murray State, KY, and currently resides

in St. Louis. She plays piano and guitar and has a gorgeous

singing voice, perfectly suited for the Rhythm and Blues

she so loves. Possessing great range both in her voice and

her songwriting, she plays Pop and Alternative-Soul music

as well. Renick has performed at The Old Rock House, the

Way Out Club, Cicero’s, The Over/Under, Petra Hookah

Lounge, FOAM Coffee & Beer, The Benton Park Café, The

Wood, and many other area venues. Her influences

include, Alicia Keyes, Corinne Bailey Rae, India Arie,

MeShell Ndegeocello, Lauryn Hill, Joss Stone, Fiona Apple,

Aaliyah, Jack Johnson, and Sarah Bareilles. Chrissy is

currently in the studio finishing up her first EP.

Also gracing the stage will be the incredible band

Antique Swing, composed of J. Thomas Crammond, Jim

Drennan, and Terry Muskopf. The band specializes in

classic Swing music, and hearing them live is always a

highly enjoyable experience. Mr. Crammond, known as

Page 17: September 2011 MetroEast NEWS

Tom, is an expert guitar player, and Jim backs him up

perfectly on rhythm guitar, with newest member Terry

jamming on Bass. Peoria native Crammond is a

distinguished Musician, Songwriter, and Educator who has

been performing professionally for well over forty years.

Tom attended Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville,

where he obtained a degree in Music (Jazz Performance –

Guitar). After graduating, he went on to teach Music, Music

Theory, and Guitar to college and grad school students.

Terry Muskopf also has over forty years of playing

and teaching experience and has been in numerous rock

and country bands since the 1970's. Jim Drennan began

playing guitar in 1981 with Tom as his instructor and has

been teaching and playing ever since. In 1988, he was the

recipient of a performance scholarship from Lewis and

Clark Community college. In 2010, Jim approached Tom

about creating a Jazz guitar duo that would recreate a

sound reminiscent of the 1930's and 1940's. Antique Swing

applies the vintage sound of musicians like gypsy Jazz

legend Django Reinhardt to many Jazz, Bossa Nova, and

Blues tunes of the 30's and 40's. Equipped with a

traditional sound and a timeless collection of songs,

Antique Swing plays music that will take you back to a time

when music was simple and elegant.

And Jhirmel Wysinger, a young and multi-talented

artist from East St. Louis, IL, will be with us. He is a Rapper,

Songwriter, and Poet who has been writing poetry and

short stories since the age of eight. He began his musical

career in 2006 with a popular band known as the Eastside

Reziderz. The band consists of Jhirmel, Tres Morrison,

Hakeem Hill and Khristian Greenlee. Never afraid to push

boundaries, their music is an eclectic mix of Electronica,

R&B, Jazz, Rap, Hip-Hop, House, Rock, Pop, and Club.

They’ve performed at venues such as The Creepy Crawl,

The Village Theater, Fubar, and Cicero’s.

On top of all his other gifts, Jhirmel is an

immensely skilled artist, specializing in Manga and Realistic

Art drawings. He is also an avid student of Martial Arts,

including Tae Kwan Do, Judo, and Brazilian Ju-jitsu. Jhirmel

attended high school at Shawnee Mission East in Overland

Park, KS, before returning to Illinois to attend SIUE East St.

Louis Charter School. During his time in high school he won

four NAACP Poetry Awards, one for a powerful poem he

penned entitled “The New Beginnings for Black History”.

Mr. Wysinger is now a student at Southwestern Illinois

College, where he’s pursuing an Associate’s degree in

Applied Sciences and Fine Art. His band, the Eastside

Reziderz, is getting ready to release an album called

Something New. A mix tape entitled The Reckoning, Vol. 1,

is in the works as well. Their music can be found on

MySpace, Youtube, Imeem, and Garageband.

And last but certainly not least is our Special Guest

for the evening, Mr. Tres Morrison. Tres is a brilliant up

and coming Musician, Songwriter, and Vocalist who is

originally from London, UK. His range of musical styles is

impressive, ranging from Alternative Rock, to Heavy Metal,

to Gospel. His influences include Leonard Cohen, U2, Jason

Mraz, Jeff Buckley, The Script, and Mumford and Sons. He

has an authentic musical voice and has been singing since

he was very young. He frequently performs at many local

fundraisers and charity events. His live performances are

captivating, and his range is remarkable. As mentioned

earlier, he is a prominent member of Eastside Reziderz. In

addition to that he is currently working on his first CD and

is in two new bands: Dead by Six and Endless October.

Morrison is forming a third band with his friend Lamone

Waller. Tres also recently auditioned for the hit show

American Idol. He and his family reside in Cahokia, IL.

So as you can see, it’s going to be another exciting

night! We’ll have our always hoppin’ Open Mic session,

fantastic drink specials and finely crafted cigars, and a

warm and welcoming staff to enjoy it all with. So come and

soak up some of the sophisticated ambience of the hottest

club around. I promise you won’t be disappointed! See you

soon. Peace!
