Well, its starting to feel a lot like Fall but several events forConestoga participation remain during Sept. August eventsincluded our casual dinner on the 9th at El Rancho (13 ofenjoyed a great meal!) and 25 of us visited the Clive CusslerCar Collection (talk about eye candy?) followed by a pizza, salad & drink lunch on the 29th. On the 15th our Wash/WaxFund Raiser was somewhat disappointing (too much rain), butCarey Dietz, Frank Nekvasil, Roy Kyle and I had a good timewhile Peggy Dietz proved to be a real trooper while holdingsigns up facing passing traffic! (thanks to all). Several Studesand Dietz’s Packard showed up at the August 1 Golden Cruisewhile several Conestogans were seen at the OCCC SwapMeet on the 22nd. Finally, the annual Glidden Tour had a stopat the Adams Co. Fairgrounds on the 27th where numerousclassics were viewed including a pristine 1912 EMF.

Noteable September events include our casual dinner onthe 9th in Windsor, The Colfax Cruise on the 19th and Meet AtThe Junction show in La Junta (Sept. 18-20). Caring for Wide WhitesBy Pat Dilling

For my white walls I use 400+ grit wet sandpaper. I wash them with

soap and water first and sometimes se a brush to get the dirt off. Then,

if there is a scuff or discoloration, I use the sandpaper. Another alterna-

tive would be the green Scotch-Brite. I do not use the sprays on white-

walls themselves. I spray it on a sponge and apply it to the black part of

the tire. That was guidance I got from Diamond Back Tires. Do not use

any of the products that have bleach in them, like Bleach-White. That

can cause the white walls to develop cracks. Also, make sure you keep proper inflation as low pres-

sure causes the sidewall to flex more and can also cause problems. I have tried a number of meth-

ods and this seems the best. I have had some whitewalls develop cracks and I’m pretty sure I can

attribute it to the bleach products. Follow the advice of the DB Tires folks. You can visit DB Tires on

line @ www.dbtires.com

Messing With a V8 Distributor

Background: One of the challenges with a Studebaker V8 engine, is the location of the hard toreach distributor. Studebaker engineers, in their advanced wisdom, placed the unit at the rear of theengine, behind the intake manifold and the valley pan. The only advantage found with this remoteplacement is the fact that an engine won’t stall out by splashing water when accelerating throughpuddles. That is not the case in Ford and other miscreant V8, where the distributor is placed at thefont of the engine.

Setting or replacing points and condensers is difficult, as in installing the distributor cap and orwires. Adjusting timing can be time consuming. Replacing a distributor is vexing.

The Fix: Recently, I discovered a technique that eliminates the hardship in replacing the distribu-tor. The Distributor is held in place by the lock plate with a 5/16th course threaded, one inch hexa-gon head screw.

Once the distributor has been removed, replace the bolt that was removed with a 5/16 x 18 stud, one inch or longer, in the threaded hole where the lock plate screw resided. After the distributor hasbeen properly installed, place the lock plate over the protruding threaded stud. Secure the lock platewith a 5/16” lock washer and nut. No more grouping to align the old screw through the lock plateand dropping it or misaligning it. Then, tighten the nut on the stud. The distributor is secure.

The Benefit: A realistic estimate places the time saved with innovative technique at three days, six hours and eleven minutes each time the distributor is removed and replaced.

Thanks to Don Dobbins. (source: The Big Sky Bulletin, Bernie Harris, Editor)
